Everything's BeautifulEverything's Beautiful brings Miles Davis' sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles' incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. I didn't want to do just a remix record, Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art.
Knowing that Miles didn't have one audience, Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula; hip-hop producer Rashad Smith; Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J; jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis; and the legendary Stevie Wonder.1. Beautiful SongsFire Records brings you a vinyl featuring over 100 of the best songs spanning the career of the legendary Jad Fair and his band Half Japanese. This comprehensive 'Best Of' compilation also includes liner notes written by Everett True.
Jad Fair is the godfather of minimalist monster art rock - a gentleman and a beast. Edwin Pouncey, The Wire.
Fitting, as this album includes every type of song that Jad has ever dreamed, other than the 'Monster songs and love songs', I do have other songs that aren't monster songs or love songs explains Jad, but for the most part they are monster songs.. I wanted to have something from each of the albums - so it's not like a dozen songs from one album, and 10 from another. It's supposed to be an overview of everything I've done. So this selection of songs pretty much fits that bill. Everett True tells us I love him for his boundless enthusiasm and shy genius...maybe it's wrong to call Jad naive because he knows what he's doing, but he has a child-like wonderment that to me is at the core of most great music I can name. The Shaggs, Leadbelly, Jonathan Richman. He makes my feet want to move, and there's no higher compliment, I've seen Jad play concerts with a rolled-up newspaper and upturned wastebasket for rhythm, with just his voice for colour. I've also seen Jad play stadiums in precisely the same fashion - with a band behind him, sure, but with the spirit intact - in front of crowds of over 15,000, in support to Nirvana on their fi¬nal tour.

All Things Bright And BeautifulOwl City's self-produced new album, All Things Bright and Beautiful, finds Adam Young expanding his sonic palette as he takes his listeners into a verdant musical dreamland on such tracks as first single Alligator Sky, The Real World and Dreams Don't Turn To Dust.
Throughout the album, Young retains his trademark optimism, letting the listener know that no matter how tough times get, there's always light at the end of the tunnel. I would feel weird if I were to communicate anything other than optimism, because it's just who I am, Young says. It's always been in me to make Owl City a vehicle that sends a hopeful message. As a listener, I'm drawn to things that are really uplifting. When a certain melody grabs my ear, it makes me feel like I could be a better person.1. The Real World

What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful WorldWhat a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World is The Decemberists' 7th studio album. Produced by the band and long-time collaborator Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Neko Case), it is The Decemberists' first full-length studio album since 2011's The King Is Dead, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in Jan of 2011. The Decemberists have sold more than 1.6 million albums to date in the US. From the soaring first single 'Make You Better'to the acoustic ruminations of the Nick Drake influenced 'Lake Song' and triumphant closer 'A Beginning Song', What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, is the band's most varied and dynamic work, both musically and emotionally. Since their earliest recordings more than a decade ago, the
Decemberists have always been known for their sense of scope and daring-from "The Tain," an eighteen-and-a-half minute 2004 single based on an Irish myth to their last two ambitious, thematic albums, The Hazards of Love and The King is Dead. Black Beauty, the never-before-released masterpiece by Arthur Lee's legendary psychedelic rock band Love, is available on 180-gram vinyl LP. Recorded in 1973 for the ambitious new label Buffalo Records,
the album remained unreleased when the company folded. Finally, after 39 years High Moon Records is honored to fulfill Arthur Lee's wish that Black Beauty be heard by music fans worldwide. Black Beauty is making its first-ever official release
in any format, anywhere! With unparalelled sound and state-of-the-art packaging, critics are hailing Black Beauty as an instant classic. Black Beauty is that rarest of rock artifacts: an unreleased,
full-length studio album, from an undisputed musical
genius. Black Beauty is the missing link in a catalog that includes Forever Changes, the classic 1967 Love album the New York Times called "one of the most affecting and beguiling albums of all time. With Black Beauty, Arthur Lee manages to combine searing 70's-rock with gorgeous melodies and stellar songwriting - topped off by his most distinctive, snarling, soulful vocals ever. With its wonderfully eclectic collection of songs, the
album offers Love fans a rare glimpse into a previously undocumented phase of Arthur Lee's fabled career, while shining a light for new fans to discover the unique genius that is the music of Arthur Lee and Love.
It's tempting to play what-if with Love's lost labor, Black Beauty, which was recorded in 1973 but shelved for nearly four decades. What if Buffalo Records hadn't gone out of business just prior to the album's release? What if Black Beauty had actually hit stores? What if it hadn't languished in limbo until years after Arthur Lee's death? Would it have stopped Love's slide into obscurity? Would it have signaled a comeback for the man who masterminded Forever Changes, still one of the most complex and compelling artifacts of 1960s Los Angeles? Would his life and career have played out any differently? Would we think of him today as something other than a cult artist, inspired as well as damned by his era?
It's difficult to imagine any answers to those questions, but it says a lot about Lee that the album even raises these what-ifs and coulda-beens. The very qualities that made him such a fascinating voice-- restlessness, excitability, paranoia, perfectionism, single-mindedness-- may have doomed any commercial prospects more than his notorious fear of travel ever did. After recording Forever Changes, he fired the band and hired new musicians to take their places. Every subsequent album featured a different line-up, although the changes seem based more on personality than on musical direction or ability. Never stagnant, Love was in constant flux, always in a state of development but never quite arriving. So the operative question becomes: Was this the version of Love that Lee had been working toward?
For Black Beauty-- which is finally seeing release via High Moon Records, although the reissue has been delayed for two years-- Lee assembled guitarist Melvan Whittington, bass player Robert Rozelle, and drummer Joe Blocker. This may be the hardiest and most muscular of Love's post-Changes rosters, with remarkable force and range. With crisp production by Paul Rothchild, best known for his work with the Doors, Love build from a potent blues rock foundation not dissimilar to that of Jimi Hendrix, but without the distracting shamanistic persona and guitar pyrotechnics. "Walk Right In" struts into country rock territory, rewriting Cannon's Jug Stompers 1929 hit into a plea for empathy, and "Beep Beep" attempts a sort of pop reggae, albeit not entirely convincingly.
On the whole, this particular line-up sounds perfectly rough and unrehearsed, generating a tense energy on "Skid" and "Stay Away" even as they suggest a band still figuring out exactly what they can do together. It's a strong album, but it's not another Forever Changes, whose accomplishments in retrospect were unrepeatable, or even another Four Sail. On the other hand, Lee wasn't aiming to craft something in that vein. Still, especially considering the professional setbacks he had faced in the years leading up to Black Beauty-- which includes being dropped by Elektra and shuffling through a series of independent labels-- Lee sounds engaged and invigorated, forgoing the bitterness that had rankled the band for a slightly more hopeful outlook. On stand-out "Can't Find It", he sings, "Every time I cry my heart out, and every time I play the fool, but there's gotta be something in this lonely world for me." The confession is all the more bittersweet for being capped with the line, "but I can't find it without you." It's ostensibly a love song, but could just as easily be addressed to his audience. His creative satisfaction relies on having a listener to complete the circuit, which makes this album's long shelf life all the sadder.

Three years after releasing her debut Immortal (1996), Beth Hart released Screaming For My Supper to great critical acclaim. Beth produced the album herself with help from longtime collaborator and bass player Tal Herzberg, resulting in a mature, fully formed record. LA Song made it to a single. Four years later, Beth Hart would release Leave The Light On, of which Music On Vinyl released the only vinyl issue as well.

Colour My Heart (Pre-Order)Charlotte OC's new track 'Colour My Heart' is an intoxicating mix of emotional lyrics and heady, thick vocals. The 22 year old, Blackburn born singer has spread her wings over to LA and recorded and produced a supernatural title track and video.
There is a spooky and bewitching sound to the song that is powered along by underlying beats and earthy melodies pulsating throughout. Charlotte drew on an influence that through the darkness there is beauty; an idea that dawned upon her in a nightclub and the video perfectly compliments the track in light of this.
With a definite overtone of mystical beauty, her musical feels spiritual and almost occultist. So when we found out that the singer's initial musical inspiration came in the form of dressing up as a witch when she was younger, we were less than surprised. This look has more or less been carried over to the video and we were almost expecting her to whip out a crystal ball and some tarot cards.1. Colour My Heart

My Human Wears Acedia ShredsLimited Edition 10 paste-on sleeve
Exclusive artwork by Dimlite
If Dimlites recent Prismic Tops EP served as a stunning
reintroduction to one of electronic musics most underrated talents,
then My Human Wears Acedia Shreds is a warning to listeners and
peers alike: keep up or be left behind. This quartet of songs finds the
Swiss producer creating wide-eyed and progressive music that
synthesises free jazz, prog- and kraut-rock, and much more. There is
no one else quite on his level, no one who inhabits a world so
complete and unique.
While he built his reputation with a string of pioneering releases on
Germanys Sonar Kollectiv label that took hip-hop as their starting
point, these days Dimlite is more Soft Machine than drum machine, a
kindred spirit of purveyors of avant-pop such as Panda Bear, and the
playful prog giants of the past. This quartet of songs contains a
richness that makes these his most satisfying compositions yet. Just
check Metal Snake Rider, an expansive opus packed into just over
three minutes of non-stop invention.
At times its even pretty, though Dimlite seems uneasy about the
beauty he creates, never allowing anything too perfect to take shape
before clipping its wings or trampling it back into the dirt. Its this
tension in his music that makes it so captivating: a constant tussle of
wills between the dreamer and the cynic, the traveller and the
trapped. Just check Loins, in which long-time collaborator
Misel Quitnos drums thump out a brutish ode to Can while
Dimlites celebratory harmonies are taunted by the anxious
squall that lurks beneath. Though ask its creator and hell tell you
simply, its about loins and using them properly.
By the time you have adjusted to the dream-world of My Human
Wears Acedia Shreds Dimlite will pull the plug, dropping you
back into your monochromatic doldrums. Its OK though. As you

My Favorite Picture Of YouAs one of the most revered songwriters of his generation, Clark embodies the term "songwriter's songwriter." The simplicity of the recording shines brightly while capturing Clark's beautifully understated and road worn vocals. Clark co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on My Favorite Picture Of You and dug very deep for each performance on this truly inspired collection.
The album's heartfelt title track was written for Susanna Clark, Guy's wife of 40 years, and a successful songwriter in her own right, who passed away in 2012. If a picture says a thousand words, then the cover photo of My Favorite Picture Of You declares an entire life. The cover depicts Clark, slightly blurred in the background, holding up an old photo of his beloved from the 1970s. According to Clark, Susanna walked in and found he and friend, the late Townes Van Zandt drunk, again. She stormed out of the house, which is when the Polaroid was taken.
The song is a loving tribute that melts your heart while making you smile. As a master songwriter, Guy Clark has always made us smile by infusing his wry wit into thoughtful storytelling.
Clark's vocals on My Favorite Picture Of You exude truth, wisdom and warmth, only touching on the insight he has gained from an extraordinary life. From the delicate sweetness of "Cornmeal Waltz" to the poignant story of the veteran returned a changed man in "Heroes" to the determined "Hell Bent On A Heartache," Clark delivers a standout album in a four-decade career overflowing with high points.
In 2004, Guy Clark was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He received the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and in 2013, he received the Academy of Country Music's Poet's Award, along with Hank Williams. However, Clark's multiple Grammy Award nominations and accolades merely hint at the immeasurable impact his songs and recordings have had. He has been a mentor to artists such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell and his songs have been covered by a multitude of artists, including Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, David Allen Coe, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffet, Asleep At The Wheel and many others. After 40 years of songwriting, Guy Clark continues to be lauded and admired by his peers, critics and artists young and old from different genres...and he is not done yet.1. Cornmeal Waltz

Beauty & Ruin"It's a song cycle. A narrative. It's nobody's story but my own I ran so
fast from my past that I caught up with myself. This album is
acknowledging that and dealing with every year getting a little tougher."
Bob Mould's new album Beauty & Ruin is a twelve-track journey of loss,
reflection, conciliation, and coming through the other side. It may very well
be the most epic emotional roller coaster ever pressed into 36 minutes.
Well into his fourth decade as a singer-songwriter, Mould is as relevant,
ferocious, and poignant as he has ever been. Much of Beauty & Ruin deals
with the passing of Mould's father in October 2012, Bob's struggle to come
to terms with it, himself, and his own identity and legacy, and repercussions
of all of the above on his ongoing relationships in the land of the living.
Beauty & Ruin is a challenging work of raw beauty-and may well be Bob
Mould's finest work since his 1989 solo debut, Workbook.
Bob Mould's journey as singer-songwriter, guitarist, author, DJ, and all-around
MVP began in 1979 with the formation of HÜsker DÜ. In 1988, Mould began
the first part of a solo career producing the aforementioned Workbook and the
heavy Black Sheets of Rain. In 1992, Bob gave the world Sugar, a reimagined
power trio that toured the globe and produced two albums and an EP: Copper
Blue, Beaster, and File Under: Easy Listening. From these releases came a cache
of songs-"Helpless," "Hoover Dam," "If I Can't Change Your Mind,"
"Your Favorite Thing"-that remain staples of Bob's live shows to this day.
In fall 2012, Bob gave the world Silver Age, his debut album for Merge
Records and the first to feature current bandmates Jason Narducy and Jon
Wurster. The subsequent touring covered four continents, ending in October
2013 in South America. Beauty & Ruin is in large part the sound of this band,
on the road relentlessly, congealing into the tightest unit to surround Bob
in his storied career. Two days after returning from South America, the trio
reconvened in Chicago to begin the recording of Beauty & Ruin. The
October 2013 session at Steve Albini's famed studio complex Electrical Audio
consisted of nine days of band tracking and five days of layering guitars. The
following month, Bob returned to Different Fur Studios in his hometown of
San Francisco to finish lyrics for six songs, add vocals, and mix the album.
Beauty & Ruin is a product of a survivor who refuses to give up, thrives
through his work, and subsequently embraces the many changes around and
within himself. Bob smartly declares the album as "yet another bonus round,
and I am very grateful."1. Low Season

A beautiful addition to the Davis canon. Recorded over the course of three days in April 1961, Someday My Prince Will Come showcases Miles' second great rhythm section, here at the absolute peak of their telepathic interplay. Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb were as tight a unit as any ever formed, grooving so successfully that they went on to leave Miles and form the Wynton Kelly trio. Someday My Prince Will Come also includes some positively blistering solos from guest John Coltrane in his final recording with Miles. And Hank Mobley offers up some beautiful bluesy solos.

My Funny Valentine (Awaiting Repress) (On Sale)Numbered, Limited Edition
Historic Recording Captures Elegant Ballads Performed at February 1964 Concert
Audiophile Reference-Standard Sound: Album Boasts Lifelike Tones, Balances, Images, and Ambience
Davis Taps Divine Inspiration: Compositions Marked by Deep Emotions, Spontaneous Brilliance, Sensitive Beauty, and Sublime Poignancy
Miles Davis' My Funny Valentine marks several historic turning points. For Davis, the live album represents the final time on record he'd perform standards rather than original compositions. It also stands as one of the last documents made by the same band that created Seven Steps of Heaven. As such, the work teems with bebop melodicism yet steers clear of Davis' oft-controversial avant-garde leanings. Most significantly, however, the set captures the ballads performed at a benefit concert from New York's then-new Philharmonic Hall just months after President Kennedy's assassination. Tapping into a seemingly divine inspiration, Davis never sounded so elegant or poetic.
Boasting gorgeous sound and pressed on 180g LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's choice reissue of the trumpeter's scintillating work bookends the label's release of Four & More from the same show and features similar enhancements relating to depth, presence, dynamics, clarity, and ambience. Presented in reference-standard fidelity, the record boasts balances, tonalities, and airiness that duplicate the experience of witnessing live jazz in an acoustically ideal hall. The images of each individual instrument, the decay of the notes, the inner reaches of the piano, and symmetry of the horns-all are rendered with palpable detail. This is the very definition of reach-out-and-touch-it realism.
Staged as a benefit to support voter registration in the South, the February concert came amidst the height of the Civil Rights movement, a cause dear to Davis' heart. Yet unforeseen circumstances raised the stakes. Having professed his admiration for Kennedy years prior, Davis appears to approach the compositions on My Funny Valentine (and, in particular, the title track) as homage to the fallen leader, a collective soliloquy comprised of pieces shot through with deeply emotional passages, spontaneous brilliance, sensitive beauty, and sublime poignancy. Elegiac moods permeate the performances; Davis and his Harmon mute paint with intricate brushstrokes.
Pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams are their leader's equal, and would continue with Davis until later in the decade, helping form what's now known as the "second great quintet." But the secret weapon on both My Funny Valentine and its sister Four & More arrives in the form of tenor saxophonist George Coleman, whom jazz experts Brian Morton and Richard Cook deem "one of the unsung heroes of modern jazz." His lines are subtle and sophisticated, straight ahead but capable of unanticipated direction, and here, he comes into his own. As does the entire band.
Indeed, the combination of introspective chemistry, lyrical reach, and telepathic communication demonstrated by the quintet on My Funny Valentine arguably exceeds that on any of Davis' myriad other live efforts. One listen confirms something special transpiring, and on this Mobile Fidelity reissue, those properties are rendered in a manner that's as transparent to the source as humanly possible. Do not miss this.

Original Ultra-Rare Cover
Remastered By Sound-Mastermind Gary Hobish
These recordings, made in 1963-64, showcase Fred McDowell in his prime. As recorded by Peter Welding, My Home Is In The Delta finds Fred and his wife, basking in the blues and gospel. Unlike Amazing Grace, which was also originally released by Testament and reissued by Sutro Park, this album is barer...a little more raw and personal....as if Fred was in a room right next to you playing the blues with his slide style that set the pace for everyone who came after. Fred McDowell is the king of the hill country blues, and My Home Is In The Delta is the crown. Includes classics such as Going Down South and Waiting For My Baby.
A true treasure, remastered for this release by sound-mastermind Gary Hobish and it is pressed on 180 gram vinyl with a beautiful tip on jacket. Note: this is the original ultra-rare cover.1. Waiting For My Baby

There's A Blue Bird In My HeartAnders Parker has a recording of new music coming out June 17th, and it is called There's a Blue Bird in my Heart. Released by his new record label, Recorded & Freed, the album of nine distinct tracks was created in Burlington, Vermont. The initial tracks were all cut live with his band Cloud Badge, before the process relocated to Athens, Georgia for additional recording and mixing by the legendary David Barbe (Bob Mould, Drive-by Truckers, Son Volt), and guest appearances by local Athens talent. This is the first release of new Parker material in over four years. A.P. did not sit idle during the interim, having recorded and released more than twenty-three tracks with the Woody Guthrie-inspired New Multitudes supergroup that also included Jay Farrar, Jim James, and Will Johnson. He also released a beautifully lyrical album of music with longtime ally Kendall Meade called Wild Chorus under the band name, Anders & Kendall. All of these efforts add to the continued entries in the ledger of his life's body of work that include his work with Space Needle, Gob Iron (also with Jay Farrar), five albums recorded under the anonymity of the name Varnaline, five albums recorded under his name, and a live "field recording" from a Portland, Oregon tour stop in 2005.1. Let No Man Write My EpitaphMastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound
...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen! Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011
Considered one of Ella's greatest recordings, she's backed on this 1960 release by pianist Paul Smith. Let No Man Write My Epitaph was a 1960 Hollywood movie featuring Fitzgerald. The album hits at a depth of emotional understanding that critics often complained was missing in Ella's reading of jazz lyrics, and once again establishes her as one of the supreme interpreters of the Great American Songbook.

OVSE-MOV-1241xBranford Marsalis Quartet
In My Solitude: Live In Concert At Grace CathedralBranford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. The three-time Grammy Award® winner has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music, the label he founded in 2002 that has allowed him to produce both his own projects and those of the Jazz world's most promising new and established artists.
Branford Marsalis is one of the few illustrious Jazz artists who have performed at Grace Cathedral since Duke Ellington helped consecrate the cathedral in 1965 with his Concert of Sacred Music. Marsalis gave a performance of both composed and improvised music. He played a solo work written for oboe by C.P.E. Bach, solo saxophone pieces by Steve Lacy and Ryo Noda, and a beautiful version of Hoagy Carmichaels 'Stardust'. All of these pieces are connected by improvisations from Branford, which keep the music of various genres flowing and hold the album together.
Leader of one of the finest jazz Quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with orchestras around the world.1. Stardust

All The Beauty In This Whole LifePressed On Translucent Clear 3-Color Splatter Vinyl
Over the past 17 years, Brother Ali has earned wide critical acclaim for his
deeply personal, socially conscious, and inspiring brand of hip-hop. Under
Rhymesayers Entertainment, he's unleashed a series of lauded projects,
establishing himself as one of the most respected independent voices in music.
The latest chapter in that celebrated journey is All the Beauty in This Whole Life,
a 15-track collection produced entirely by Atmosphere's Anthony "Ant" Davis.
This entire album is based on the reality that beauty is the splendor of truth
says the Minneapolis MC. Beauty in all of its forms is the outward manifestation
of love and virtue. It soothes the soul and pulls it gently toward the truth it
communicates. Every word and note of this album is intended to either reflect
beauty, or expose the ugliness that blocks us from living lives of meaning.
All the Beauty in This Whole Life is Ali's first official release in five years and
represents the newest and most refined chapter of his life's journey. Each of
my albums are the result of the pain, growth and eventual healing that I experience.
Articulating the pain and navigating the healing allows the people who
really feel my music to travel with me. It's not only that we hurt together, we heal
together as well.
Contrasting intensely heavy moments with joyous and grateful ones, All the
Beauty in This Whole Life arrives right on time, to help heal a divided nation
through the power of music. Ali wouldn't have it any other way. In times of great
suffering in the outside world, the most important battles start from within.LP 1
