    As the most prolific guitarist on Blue Note's roster, Grant Green was very busy during 1960-65, appearing in all types of settings with his fellow all-stars. However Green Street is quite unique for it showcases Green in a trio with bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey. Because Green rarely played chords, instead concentrating on single-note lines, hearing him in this sparse setting is similar to hearing a brilliant tenor-saxophonist such as Sonny Rollins in a piano less trio. Recorded April 1, 1961, Green Street features the guitarist stretching out on three originals, Round Midnight and Alone Together. With Tucker and Bailey hanging on every Green phrase and reacting immediately to his musical thoughts, the focus is almost entirely on the guitarist. Grant Green comes up with consistently surprising and rewarding ideas, taking these songs on unexpected trips and creating music for the ages. Few other guitarists or saxophonists of the time could have excelled in this setting on the level of Green. Heard in brilliant sound, Green Street is one of the most essential recordings of Grant Green.

    In 1963, the year when Our Man In Paris was recorded, Dexter Gordon turned 40 and moved to Europe for what would be a dozen-year stay. Gordon had been the first important bebop tenor-saxophonist and a giant of Jazz since 1945. After some time off the scene in the ?50s, he was signed to Blue Note. He returned with full force, playing with power, wit and his trademark huge sound, creating one masterpiece after another. On Our Man In Paris, he is clearly inspired by the playing of the innovative bebop pianist Bud Powell, himself at the peak of his powers, bassist Pierre Michelot and the pioneering bop drummer Kenny Clarke. Gordon plays chorus after chorus of fresh, swinging ideas on such tunes as Scrapple From The Apple, Broadway and A Night In Tunisia,? making these Jazz standards sound as if they were written for him. This blazing bebop date is a constant joy.

    In a word association game, the name "Hank Mobley" will often generate "Blue Note" and vice versa. While Mobley had a musical life beyond the Blue Note label including associations with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis (the 1961 Quintet), it is for his Blue Note recordings that he rightfully most remembered. Mobley led 25 albums for Blue Note and appeared on over 30 others as a sideman. His consistency resulted in all of those recordings being recommended to hard bop collectors. Mobley's mastery of the style, his attractive tone, and his skill at writing songs that inspire memorable solos made him a perfect representative of the Blue Note sound.     Kenny Drew was an unsung master of bebop. A brilliant pianist who started with the example of Bud Powell and then developed his own sound within the style, in the '50s Drew worked with some of the most important innovators of all time including Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington and Art Blakey. By 1960 when he recorded Undercurrent, Drew had already led ten albums of his own, mostly with duos and trios. Oddly enough he only had the opportunity to lead two albums in his life for Blue Note, an early effort from 1953 and the classic Undercurrent. Joined in a quintet by the young firebrand trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the always-stimulating tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, the 32-year old pianist shows that he was ready to truly make his mark on the jazz world. All six compositions are his, and in his accompaniment of the passionate horn men and also in his soulful solos, Drew shows that he was one of the major hard bop stylists. This high energy album, which finds Hubbard, Mobley and Drew consistently inspiring each other to come up with heated statements, has many of the pianist's finest compositions including the roaring "Undercurrent," the bluesy "Funk-Cosity," the gospellish "The Pot's On," the well titled "Groovin' The Blues" and the beautiful "Ballade." Kenny Drew, who would move permanently to Europe in 1964 and would not lead another album until 1973, is heard throughout at the peak of his powers, creating his finest recording.

    Blue Hour has such a logical match up that it is very surprising that it did not happen again. Stanley Turrentine, the most soulful of all tenor-saxophonists, teams up with Gene Harris and the Three Sounds, one of the most swinging soul jazz trios, a group that was at the height of its popularity. The results are magical and timeless. At the time of this Dec. 16, 1960 recording, Stanley Turrentine was 26 and on the verge of stardom in the jazz world and beyond. In the 1950s he had worked with Lowell Fulson, Earl Bostic and other r&b bands. Most significant were his 1959-60 stint with Max Roach and his recordings with Jimmy Smith which helped lead to his signing with Blue Note. From the start, Turrentine's fat tone, soulful style and ability to put a maximum amount of emotion into every single note made him instantly recognizable. Gene Harris was Turrentine's equivalent on piano. His gutsy and bluesy style mixed together Oscar Peterson with Junior Mance. He formed the Three Sounds with bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy in 1956 and the group was such a hit that they recorded 12 albums for Blue Note during 1958-62 including four in 1960 alone. Blue Hour features the original "Blue Riff" plus four of the most beloved songs in blues and jazz history. No matter how many times one has heard such songs as "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You," "Willow Weep For Me" and "Since I Fell For You," these versions are still very special. Turrentine and Harris have similar approaches, being jazz masters who loved to play the blues. They constantly echo each other's ideas and put such feeling into these vintage songs that they make every moment count. Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris may have only teamed up this one time but Blue Hour is a classic that will be loved by anyone who is lucky enough to hear it.

    Grant Green was, along with Wes Montgomery, the top new jazz guitarist to become prominent in the early 1960s. Due to his single-note style (Green rarely every played a chord) and his ability to create fast lines on the spot, Green was in some ways the Charlie Parker of the guitar. He gained experience playing in St. Louis in the 1950s including with Jimmy Forrest, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Lou Donaldson, moved to New York, and immediately became Blue Note's house guitarist. When it came to playing soul jazz with organ combos, jamming bebop with a quartet, caressing ballads or coming up with fresh approaches to Latin jazz and spirituals, the versatile Green was at the top of his field. But among his many recordings, Grant Green's most vital and adventurous was Idle Moments. With such inspiring sidemen as Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and Duke Pearson, Green is heard at the absolute apex of his creativity throughout this stunning set. He builds up statements like a masterful speaker, sounds both passionate and thoughtful at every tempo, and never runs out of brilliant and personal ideas to express. Every phrase leads to the next one yet all of his solos are spontaneous.     Page One is one of the most brilliant recording debuts in jazz history. While most first efforts feature a promising jazz musician in their early stages when they sound a bit like their musical heroes since they are in the process of developing their own original voices. Page One is much different. Joe Henderson, who was 26 at the time, was already fully formed. His sound was immediately recognizable and his ability to play both inside (hard bop) and outside (explorative jazz) at the same time made him unique from the beginning of his career.Henderson began his career playing locally in Detroit. After serving in the military and having a brief stint with organist Jack McDuff, he joined trumpeter Kenny Dorham's group in 1962. Dorham championed Henderson and helped get him signed to Blue Note. For Page One, Henderson utilized Dorham, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Pete La Roca for a remarkable set of forward-looking and passionate jazz. Page One includes the earliest recordings of Dorham's "Blue Bossa" (which has been a standard ever since), "La Mesha" and four Henderson originals including "Recorda Me." Henderson and Dorham make for a perfect team as they show on such numbers as the swinging "Jinrikisha," the explosive "Homestretch" and the blues "Out Of The Night." Dorham, a veteran from the bebop era, effectively passed the torch to Joe Henderson who from this point on would make a superb series of timeless recordings. Page One was a giant first step in a very significant career.

    Point Of Departure is not only one of the greatest jazz recordings of 1964, but of all time. The stellar lineup (Eric Dolphy, Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and a teen aged Tony Williams) was given a set of challenging compositions by the brilliant pianist and composer Andrew Hill. This group created the album known as Point of Departure, an acknowledged modern day classic and one of Blue Notes most extraordinary recordings. Andrew Hill was a quiet revolutionary, but he was every bit as original in his conception as Thelonious Monk. Hill extended, twisted and turned hard bop into his own very fresh and personal music. Like Eric Dolphy, Hill spawned few imitators.     Ike Quebec was perhaps the least likely musician to be leading albums for Blue Note in the early 1960s for he was a big-toned swing stylist rather than a hard bop or soul jazz player. But Quebec, a superb musician who was making a major comeback, was one of the most important figures in the entire history of Blue Note. He was the one who introduced Alfred Lion to bebop in the mid-1940s (including Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell) which entirely changed the course of Blue Note. Quebec, who gained some fame as a member of the Cab Calloway Orchestra, was a member of the Blue Note family back in the mid-1940s, having a hit with his recording of "Blue Harlem." After Quebec introduced Alfred Lion to the new music, he worked as an A&R man for Blue Note. Inactive during much of the 1950s, Quebec emerged in 1960 in prime form, recording several gems for Blue Note including Blue and Sentimental, his definitive album. Equally skilled on intimate ballads and uptempo romps, Quebec displays his mastery of the tenor and his huge sound throughout this set. Joined by a pianoless quartet that includes Grant Green, Quebec makes every breath and sound count, playing seductive lines on the ballads and swinging forcefully on the hotter numbers. He only lived until 1963 (passing away when he was just 44), but, as Blue And Sentimental shows, Ike Quebec saved the very best for his later period, creating a masterpiece.

    Jackie McLean always had an intense sound, playing a little bit sharp and putting passion into every sound that came out of his alto-saxophone. While he was initially inspired by Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Bud Powell, by 1951 he was already a true original. McLean added a great deal of fire to the music of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. A giant of hard bop during the second half of the 1950s, McLean was one of the very few musicians of his generation to explore freer forms of jazz in the 1960s. Avant-garde jazz perfectly fit his adventurous style which was already very emotional. 1965's Right Now, which matches him with a trio that includes pianist Larry Willis, is one of his most exciting albums of the 1960s. McLean stretches out at length on Willis' beautiful ballad "Poor Eric" and three originals, often playing with such ferocity that it will cause one's hair to stand up. The music (other than the ballad) is hard-charging, intense and often free with McLean heard at his most innovative. Even a half-century later, Right Now! sounds contemporary, vital and thrilling.

    After his early avant-garde years with Blue Note Records, Herbie Hancock achieved much success with pop music fans by gradually turning towards a mixture of Afro-American styles in which he combined soul, jazz and funk. Having composed the soundtrack to Bill Cosby's animated children's show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and released a popular family-orientated album entitled Fat Albert Rotunda, Hancock stated that instead of looking for jazz musicians who could play funky music, he had searched for funk musicians with a feeling for jazz. That this concept functions only too well is demonstrated in the funky album Man-Child, which features such brilliant jazz musicians as Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin and Ernie Watts. But wait! There's no narcissistic showing off here as in a jam session. The whole band performs as one, playing concentrated grooves around Hancock's carefully intertwined electronic sounds. The result is a fast-paced funky style, due to the collective efforts of the band, although each member is given ample opportunity to show off his prowess in short solo interludes and thus delight the listener with his unique style.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Art Blakey was one of the greatest of all jazz drummers, a masterful talent scout and the inspiring leader of the Jazz Messengers. For 35 years (1955-90), the Jazz Messengers featured brilliant young talent who were pushed by Blakey to write new music and play at their very best. One certainly could not coast with Blakey's explosive drumming constantly egging on the players. The who's who of jazz passed through Blakey's band for several generations, with everyone from Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis to Benny Golson and Horace Silver benefiting from the hard-swinging experience. But few lineups could compete with the 1960 edition of the Jazz Messengers featured on The Big Beat. Blakey, the old man of the band at 30, is joined by bassist Jymie Merritt and three brilliant stylists who were not only exciting soloists but very skilled songwriters: trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons.     Wayne Shorter made a major impact on the Jazz world during 1963-64. He left Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to become a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and he recorded Night Dreamer and Juju as a leader for Blue Note.     This is one of the rarest of all Blue Note albums, and one that is a must for record collectors. The Francy Boland/Kenny Clarke big band was one of the most exciting orchestras of the 1960s and '70s. Much less known but also brilliant was a unique octet co-led by Boland and Clarke just prior to the big band. Called The Golden Eight, the group, in addition to pianist Boland and drummer Clarke, includes the dazzling hard bop trumpeter Duscko Gojkovic, alto sax, tenor sax, string bass and top musicians on both alto horn and baritone horn. The latter two horns were hardly ever featured in a jazz setting and they really add a great deal to the sound of the ensembles. The debut recording by the Golden Eight from 1961 is up to the level of the best Blue Note albums of the time even if few know about it. Mixing together inventive versions of standards with Boland's memorable originals, this obscure classic will amaze today's listeners.

    Us Three, featuring pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood, is one of Blue Note's greatest trio albums. The piano-bass-drums trio has long been the most compact of all jazz combos, a complete orchestra with just three pieces. Some trios have been completely dominated by its pianist including the Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum Trios. The trio on Us Three is a bit different for it features three superior jazz men who constantly play off of each other, communicating immediately and telepathically in sensitive yet funky interactions. Horace Parlan, already well known at 29 and a member of the Lou Donaldson Quartet, was perfect for the trio format in 1960. His soulful chordal style matches very well with the subtle contributions of George Tucker and Al Harewood. There are some very memorable originals and the trio makes some superior standards sound as if they were written for them. The members of Us Three seem to think as one and the resulting music, which has sonics never before realized, is fantastic.

    It came about purely by accident. At the end of a Lee Morgan record date in 1963, one more song was needed. The trumpeter quickly put together a catchy ditty with a boogaloo rhythm that he called "The Sidewinder." While it was born as an afterthought, "The Sidewinder" became Morgan's biggest hit and launched a boogaloo craze, even being used on a nationally televised commercial. The irresistible playing by Morgan, Joe Henderson and a rhythm section propelled by Billy Higgins made this into one of Blue Note's biggest selling records. Lee Morgan, who was 25 at the time, had already been a household name in jazz for seven years. He began recording for Blue Note as a leader in 1956 when he was just 18, had been a featured member of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band while still a teenager, and had been the star of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers during 1958-61. After a bit of time off the scene, in 1963 he launched his comeback with The Sidewinder. Beyond the classic title cut, The Sidewinder is also notable for four other Morgan hard bop originals including "Totem Pole" and "Gary's Notebook." Morgan is in brilliant form throughout, playing with the brashness, confidence and soulfulness that had made him famous as a child prodigy in jazz. Joe Henderson was rapidly emerging as one of the top young tenor-saxophonists of the time, and the quintet, which had never played together as a unit before, sounded like a well-oiled jazz machine that was on high gear. Reissued in superb sound, The Sidewinder is not only one of the major musical highpoints of Lee Morgan's life but music for the ages.

    Bud Powell was one of those very few special innovators who permanently changed the way that his instrument is played in jazz. Prior to Powell's arrival on the scene, pianists kept time with their left hand, stating the beat by striding back and forth between bass notes and chords while their right played melodic variations. When Powell rose to prominence in 1945, his style was a revelation. He stated chords with his left-hand on an irregular basis as if he were a drummer hitting the bass drum while his right played rapid single-note lines like a horn player. This became the way to play jazz piano. While Bud Powell's recordings of the 1950s could be erratic due to his personal problems, his greatest work was on Blue Note. The Scene Changes, recorded in 1958 with Paul Chambers and Art Taylor, is one of his finest recordings, featuring Powell at the peak of his powers. Powell is heard in prime form, playing one brilliant solo after another. He introduces such originals as "Cleopatra's Dream," "Danceland" and "Crossin' The Channel," showing that he was also a masterful composer.     Considered one of the great young pianists of the mid-to-late 1950s, Sonny Clark was practically the house pianist at Blue Note during 1957-62 before his tragically early death in 1963 when he was just 31. He began his career playing and recording with Teddy Charles and Wardell Gray in the early 1950s. Inspired by Bud Powell, he made a particularly strong impression during his period with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco's group. He also worked with Dinah Washington, Serge Chaloff and Sonny Criss in addition to leading his own trio. But he is most famous for his work for Blue Note In addition to leading seven albums for the label, Clark was on many sessions as a sidemen, uplifting every date with his adventurous and swinging playing. His playing was full of joyful discoveries, constant swing, and an optimistic creativity that was indescribable and quite infectious. Cool Struttin,' the pianist's most famous and rewarding album, features Sonny Clark in a quintet with altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. On this 1958 gem, Clark is featured on four lengthy performances, including Miles Davis "Sippin' At Bells" and the exotic "Deep Night." The music is filled with magical moments where the five musicians seem to think and create like one. The greatest jazz performances include moments like those heard on "Cool Struttin'" where the music has a life of its own beyond the individual players. The more one plays this superb album, the more it is obvious that this is one of the truly essential Blue Note recordings.

    In 1962, when the 39-year old Dexter Gordon recorded Go, he had already lived a lifetime in jazz. After gaining experience playing with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong, in 1945, Gordon became the first tenor-saxophonist to not only master bebop but to develop his own distinctive sound in the new style. He recorded with Dizzy Gillespie and as a leader, and starred in late night jam sessions in Los Angeles with fellow tenors Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards. After a largely uneventful decade in the 1950s, Gordon made a major comeback in 1961 when he emerged in prime form on Blue Note, recording Dexter Calling. Its follow-up album Go! Was even better. Joined in his quartet by the great pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins, Gordon really digs into the colorful program. On such numbers as "Three O'Clock In The Morning" (a standard that was extinct after the early 1920s), "Love For Sale," his own "Cheesecake," and "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry," Gordon plays chorus after chorus of outstanding ideas in his huge tone. He caresses the melodies, creates solos that are full of swing, wit, and inspiration, and makes every phrase sound personal, fresh and original. There was no mistaking Dexter Gordon for anyone else, and he always gave one the impression that he could play for hours without running out of inventive ideas or personality. Go! Is an album that grows in interest and power with each listen. It is Dexter Gordon at the height of his powers.

    Trumpeter Johnny Coles, a distinctive and passionate player best known for his associations with Gil Evans, the remarkable Charles Mingus Quintet of 1964, and Herbie Hancock's late 60's Sextet, led relatively few albums of his own, and only two before 1982. Recorded in 1963, Little Johnny C is universally recognized as Johnny Coles' finest recording. Coles' soulful trumpet is heard in superb form as he pushes the hard bop mainstream forward.
