Never TwiceBrisk, self-contained, a little mysterious, and catchy enough to revisit again and again
His style is all his own
The second coming of soul, infusing a distinctly California surf-rock spin to the genre
Many moons ago Primo Pitino, the DJ of San Francisco's legendary Oldies Night, passed me a copy of his friend Nick Waterhouse's "Some Place." Nick was a local vinyl DJ and the kid working at our Shangri-la, Rooky Ricardo's Records. Though he didn't have a band at the time, Waterhouse assembled some local musicians to cut a one-off 45 in the vein of the electrifying mid-century modern rhythm and blues he loved. I threw "Some Place" on the Technics during sound check a few cities down the line and was blown away from the howling falsetto all the way to the end! I gave it a whirl every night from Texas to Tennessee and all the way back home to New York. Not only were the dancers' feet responding, but they were also asking about the track on a nightly basis. The Nashville Scene was so blown away that they printed a piece on Nick after a single listen. DJs and collectors everywhere wanted it so bad that the little record with the big sound started fetching upwards of $300 on Ebay.
The immediate and unprecedented underground dance party success of Nick's DIY record resulted in a full band, gigs, and, after a number of obstacles, the widely acclaimed 2012 LP Time's All Gone. Nick's music, vision, and fully formed aesthetic caught on globally and he was instantly a fixture at nearly every major nightclub and festival on both sides of the Atlantic, Australia, Japan, and Russia - hitting stages everywhere from Primavera to Montreux Jazz Festival and charting on college, public, and commercial radio.
Only a year after self-releasing his first single, Nick Waterhouse was thrust into the chaos of leading a band, touring, and recording in the big leagues! Pummeling high speed down a bumpy hill of lineup changes, economic problems, and general chaos without any breaks, Nick made it through and the challenges made him more focused. 2014's Holly captured a more experienced artist upping the ante in writing, performance, recording, and production, inspiring a new level of critical and commercial success.
In addition to a jam-packed five years on the road, in the studio, and in the practice space, Waterhouse also produced septuagenarian soul legend Ural Thomas, Los Angeles Latin stars the Boogaloo Assassins, and garage rockers the Allah-las. He's currently collaborating with the likes of young Grammy-nominee Leon Bridges and Steven Colbert bandleader Jon Batiste. The Rolling Stones blast Nick's version of "I Can Only Give You Everything" at stadiums before they go onstage. Vogue hired him to pose with Kendall Jenner. He hipped her to Little Willie John while Anna Wintour complimented his shoes. While a lesser artist would get lost in these distractions, Nick Waterhouse's acclaim only seems to energize him and make him work harder and push his music to the next level.
Nick's latest Never Twice is a culmination, intensification, and realization of everything he's been developing throughout this prolific frenzy. Catchier and loaded with more hits than its predecessors, Nick's new LP is at the same time harder hitting, more rhythmic, more harmonic, more diverse, and more adventurous than any of the excellent work that already separated him from the pack. A cool and elegant post-post-modern cocktail of 1950s r&b and club jazz, mixed with 1960s soul and boogaloo, and shaken with a minimal contemporary sensibility, Never Twice finds the artist taking his time, refining his vision, and speaking with new authority. In five short years Nick Waterhouse has come a long way and it looks like he may have just painted his masterpiece.

Live AliveLive Alive, originally released in 1986, is an essential Blues double album compiled from four live performances by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The performances were recorded in 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival (July 16), the Austin Opera House (July 17 + 18) and at Dallas Starfest (July 19). The amazing live record is filled with gems from SRV's first three albums, plus a great rendition of Willie The Wimp featuring his brother Jimmy (who also makes a guest appearance on Love Struck Baby, Look At Little Sister and Change It).

Live At Montreux 1996Deep Purple need no introduction as one of the all-time great British rock bands. Their association with Montreux goes back to the early seventies, when their attempt to record their album Machine Head at the Montreux Casino was thwarted when it promptly burnt down, forcing them to make the album in the rooms and corridors of the Grand Hotel instead. The story was, of course, immortalized in their classic song Smoke On The Water which is the climax of this 1996 concert from the Montreux festival.LP 1

This was all before his silk kimonos and black sombreros became trademarks, before his incendiary Montreux Jazz Festival appearance & before his recording contract. Garden RuinCalexico is a band from Tucson, Arizona that shares a sun-bleached border with many performers and musical styles. Comprised of two core members, Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the Spoke LP. Although that record marked the band's first official output, Joey and John had already been playing together as collaborating members of Arizona mainstays Giant Sand. A wide variety of tours, performances (including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Richard Buckner), as well as their continuing relationship with Giant Sand, allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of musicians and instruments, and the band's sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases.TRACK LISTING:

Lift Your SpiritAloe Blacc's affecting voice, perceptive lyrics, and dapper sartorial flair are already familiar to music lovers around the world. The soulful singer-songwriter
co-wrote and provided vocals for Swedish DJ Avicii's international hit single "Wake Me Up," which hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on
Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs charts, as well as in over 100 countries around the world, including the U.K., where it
became the fastest-selling single of 2013.
It is the latest global hit that Blacc has been involved with. In 2010, his international Top 10, platinum-selling single "I Need A Dollar" surged across the
world, ringing out from the streets of Paris to the soul clubs of London, combining social consciousness with irresistible pop. Throughout 2011, Blacc and
his touring band, The Grand Scheme, hit the road in support of Blacc's second solo album and international breakthrough Good Things; turning in
memorable sets at iconic festivals like Montreux Jazz in Switzerland and Glastonbury in the UK. Blacc performed "I Need A Dollar" on the French TV
programs Taratata and Le Grand Journal, as well as the influential British music show Later with Jools Holland; spurring the track to become the de
facto anthem to the post-Great Recession recovery. Blacc has cast an eye toward expanding his phenomenal European success to America. It's where
the California native was born and raised, and where he has been a voice on the indie hip-hop scene since high school. It's also where most people know
"I Need A Dollar" as the theme to the HBO series How To Make it In America.
This year Blacc made his first major-label debut via XIX Recordings/Interscope Records in September with the release of his EP, entitled "Wake Me Up".
Blacc has also been in the studio working on his upcoming album, Lift Your Spirit, with such songwriters and producers as Pharrell, DJ Khalil and Harold

Forever (Box Set)
Limited Edition 4 LP Box Set
Includes Additional Bonus 12" Single Of William Orbit Mix Of "Let Me In Your Heart Again"
Having in the three months since its original release already provided Queen with their twenty fifth top ten album and twenty sixth UK gold album, Queen's current best selling compilation package Queen Forever is to receive a special limited edition vinyl release coming this spring.
The original 36 track 2 CD Queen Forever release will now be made available as a strictly limited 4 LP vinyl box set which includes an additional 12" single bonus disc exclusive to the set featuring a special William Orbit mix of the only recently heard Freddie Mercury track "Let Me In Your Heart Again".
The Orbit mix was held back from the Forever CD release and only surfaced for a limited period to support the Coca-Cola (RED) AIDS awareness campaign mounted at the tail end of last year.
The B side of the 12" single has a further bonus feature exclusive to this box set - a laser etching of the box set cover illustration.
Distinguishing itself as the first Queen album to feature new Freddie Mercury led tracks since the band's 1995 Made In Heaven album, Queen Forever brings out into the light the long anticipated track from Queen and Michael Jackson, 'There Must Be More to Life Than This', an unfinished Mercury-Queen track 'Let Me In Your Heart Again' originating from the band's The Works album recording sessions (featured on this vinyl package in a newly available William Orbit mix) and a new ballad version of Mercury's first solo hit, his Giorgio Moroder collaboration, 'Love Kills', which is currently being heavily played at UK and European radio.
The rest of the package mixes Queen hits, classic tracks and celebrates the extraordinary musical path of one of the world's greatest rock bands. Reaching back as far as 1974 with fan favourite Nevermore, a Freddie Mercury song originally included on Queen II, Queen Forever progresses to feature songs that spotlight the band's songwriting prowess, studio experimentation and remarkable development, and is completed with latter-day Queen hits, including '91's no. 1 These Are The Days Of Our Lives and '95's Too Much Love Will Kill You, together with the poignant A Winter's Tale, recorded during Freddie Mercury's final Queen recording sessions in Montreux in 1991.
Queen Forever is a thrilling showcase for exclusive new Queen recordings but equally as much a paean to the extraordinary musical achievements of John Deacon, Brian May, Roger Taylor and the late Freddie Mercury, whose singular talent we again get to marvel at through this meticulously presented 36 track collection.LP 1

Royal Albert HallIn May 2014 EELS embarked on an ambitious fifty-three show world tour. Starting in Phoenix, Arizona and crossing The United States and Canada before rolling through mainland Europe and Great Britain, the band performed spine-tingling shows at New York's Apollo, Chicago's Vic Theater, Los Angeles' Orpheum Theater, The Montreux Jazz Festival and The Amsterdam Concert Hall among many others. On the night of June 30th EELS returned to London's legendary Royal Albert Hall for the first time in nine years to play a stunning show that was filmed and recorded.
In sharp contrast to the previous EELS tour that found the band in track suits playing high octane electric rock & roll, this EELS show was a gentlemen's EELS concert, as EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, puts it. Filmed by nine cameras in the gorgeously-lit Royal Albert Hall, the new film and album find the EELS dapperly dressed in suits and ties, and all five band members stretching their musical capabilities past new boundaries, playing songs from 2014's critically-acclaimed THE CAUTIONARY TALES OF MARK OLIVER EVERETT for the first time along with songs spanning the EELS' 19 year career. When they played Royal Albert Hall in 2005 they were accompanied by a string section. This time there are only the five core members of the band on stage throughout the concert, splitting their time between guitar, piano, pedal steel guitar, trumpet, upright and bowed bass, melodica, vibraphone, timpani, drums, concert chimes and glockenspiel. And the results are stunning.
The film features the band backstage preparing for the big night and captures the entire show from start to finish, as it happened, including Everett kissing the spot where John Lennon once stood on the stage, making his way to hug fans all the way around Albert Hall's massive floor, returning for several encores, as well as a surprise phantom encore where Everett's dream of playing the massive Albert Hall pipe organ for some spooky EELS classics finally comes true.
Perhaps as a result of this fantastic show, EELS were quickly invited back for a second 2014 London show and Everett, once heavily-bearded and mistakenly suspected by London police to be a terrorist (while taking a break from press interviews in Hyde Park), was made an honorary citizen of London in a ceremony granting him Freedom of the City.1. UNIM-ATO-0010xKing Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Nonagon InfinityPressed On Splattered Vinyl (Dark Vinyl With Light Splatters)
"Nonagon infinity opens the door," sings Stu Mackenzie, frontman of Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. It turns out, though, that once the door's open, it never closes. That's because the Melbourne septet has ingeniously crafted what may be the world's first infinitely looping LP. Each of the nine, complex, blistering tracks on 'Nonagon Infinity' seamlessly flows into the next, with the final song linking straight back into the top of the opener like a sonic mobius strip. It's exactly the kind of ambitious vision that prompted Rolling Stone to dub the band "one of the most compelling collectives of art-rock experimentalists in recent years." But far from a simple conceptual experiment, the album is both an exhilarating shot of adrenaline and a remarkable feat of craftsmanship, the result of painstaking planning and an eye for detail years in the making.
The roots of 'Nonagon Infinity' stretch back to 2014, when King Gizzard recorded their critically acclaimed album "I'm In Your Mind Fuzz," which was hailed by Pitchfork as "dense, intricately crafted, and most importantly, powerful."
"We actually wanted to do this with 'Mind Fuzz,' but it just didn't work," explains Mackenzie. "We ended up writing songs that needed to be on that record but didn't connect to the others, so we had to abandon the idea, but the seeds were sown."
To an outsider, it may have seemed like the band had completely given up on the concept, as the ever-prolific group quickly followed 'Mind Fuzz' with two more records in 2015, 'Quarters'-described by The Guardian as "the neon intersection of DIY psych and 1960s beach pop"-and the stripped-down 'Paper Mache Dream Balloon,' which earned praise from NPR to Stereogum. The truth, though, was that King Gizzard was honing in on the 'Nonagon Infinity' material the whole time, test-driving various tracks in their explosive live shows to prep for the monumental task of stitching them all together into one searing, multi-movement epic.
"We really wanted to focus on things that felt good live," says Mackenzie. "We'd grab a little riff here or a little groove there, and we'd jam on them and form songs out of them, which was the opposite of 'Paper Mache,' where we were making songs in an acoustic, classic-songwriting kind of way. I wanted to have an album where all these riffs and grooves just kept coming in and out the whole time, so a song wasn't just a song, it was part of a loop, part of this whole experience where it feels like it doesn't end and doesn't need to end."
Recorded at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn, the final result is an intricate and immersive listening experience. Lyrical refrains and musical motifs establish themselves and then submerge beneath the chaos, only to resurface unexpectedly later like familiar companions on a labyrinthine journey. Motorhead-grade riffs give way to King Crimson and Yes-levels of prog complexity, as songs churn through unusual time signatures and shifting rhythms with blunt force, laying waste to everything in their path.
"I wanted it to feel like a horror or sci-fi movie," explains Mackenzie of the album's dark overtones. "The lyrics came as a stream of consciousness, all of these elements just falling out of my head as it was happening."
"Big Fig Wasp" references a particularly macabre insect that must kill itself in order to perpetuate the species, while "Gamma Knife," with its 11/8-time drum solo, is named for a surgical tool that burns cuts into the skin, and "People-Vultures" plays like a sinister film soundtrack. Album opener "Robot Stop" pulls more directly from the band's recent experiences, inspired in part by their relentless work ethic and tour schedule, which has included festival performances at Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz & Roskilde as well as countless sold out dates in rooms across the USA, UK, Europe and Australia.
"That song's about feeling overworked, like a bit of a robot that's just going to crash and die or something," he says with a laugh. "But you get yourself up and do it again and you robot on and you're alright. It was one of the early ones we wrote for the record, and I think when that song came together, everybody started to feel like were going to actually be able to pull off this never-ending album idea."
To say they pulled it off would be an understatement. The record is a force to be reckoned with on par with the road trains Mackenzie references in the album's final track.
"In the Australian desert, in the outback, there are what's called road trains, which are these massive trucks pulling heaps of carriages that can end up being 50 meters long," he explains. "They drive on the road really, really fast, and they're deadly, with these bars in the front to kill kangaroos and anything else in their path."
'Nonagon Infinity' has opened the door for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and they're barreling ahead with more momentum than ever before now. Much like those road trains, with a band this good, the safest place to be is onboard.1. Robot Stop

Document & Eyewitness 1979-1980For those unfamiliar with Document and Eyewitness, it really doesn't do it justice to describe it simply as a collection of live recordings from three turn-of-the-80s Wire gigs. What makes it more than that is the unorthodox nature of the main performance and the way it was presented on record. The centrepiece of the original vinyl release was a recording of the final gig of Wire's 70s phase. Wire's set was composed of largely new (and often under-rehearsed) work, accompanied by a series of artistic actions and interventions.
The evening was memorable for the unusually hostile reaction from sections of the audience, which has perhaps elevated it beyond a simple passing moment. If the crowd was expecting a standard gig, the level of outrage, expressed in vociferous abuse suggested that the band's intentions were lost on those in attendance, who were instead confounded by the apparent artistic pretensions on display. The approach was to couple selected live tracks with a spoken commentary on the proceedings by long-term Wire fans Adrian Garston and Russell Mills. Hence the title, Document and Eyewitness. For the album, the Electric Ballroom material was supplemented with recordings from a July 1979 show at the Notre Dame Hall (a straightforward band performance), along with one track from a 1979 gig in Montreux.1. 5/10 (Electric Ballroom Version)
