    The Moon And Antarctica

2000's The Moon & Antarctica is Modest Mouse's third full-length album and first on a major label. The album was praised by critics and fans alike for its in-depth discussion of dense subject matter, as well as for frontman Isaac Brocks clever and introspective lyrics. The Moon & Antarctica was also marked an expansion of the bands unique sound.

Good News For People Who Love Bad News

Following indie stardom and critical praise, Modest Mouse was poised to make big waves in the music world. And in 2004, with the release of Good News For People Who Love Bad News, the band took their first steps toward commercial success. Sad Sappy Sucker

After stepping up to the major-label plate with The Moon and Antarctica, Modest Mouse reach back to their roots with Sad Sappy Sucker. Sucker is actually the band's first recording, released in 2001 but created back in 1994. It was shelved in favor of Lonesome Crowded West as their debut, but Sucker is still a fine piece of the Modest Mouse lineage.

Although parts of Sucker are experimental compared to the band's current polish, this isn't some rarity to be enjoyed only by collectors. Breezy melodies build into jagged choruses as singer Isaac Brock shows he can be both tender and playfully aggressive. Most of the songs clock in between two and three minutes, leaving room for numerous gems in the course of the 24-track album. While 12 of the songs come from a recording session with K Records' Calvin Johnson, a chunk of Sucker material comes from Brock's Dial-a-Song phase, during which callers heard new songs by dialing into his answering machine. These experiments range from lo-fi combos of distorted instruments and whiny vocals to complete songs, like the bluesy rock jam on Secret Agent X-9. The Dial-a-Songs--and a message left by Murder City Devils front man Spencer Moody (Call to Dial-a-Song)--are both comic relief and proof that Modest Mouse didn't gain their indie-rock cult status by accident. The talent's been there from the beginning. --Jennifer Maerz

The Lonesome Crowded West (Awaiting Repress)

Subject to its own Pitchfork documentary, listed
in numerous prestigious Best Albums of the 90s
lists, and destined to be re-discovered by continuous
generations, The Lonesome Crowded West stands as the defacto
Northwest indie-rock record. Originally released in 1997, it not only
helped shape the sound that came to be associated with the American
Pacific Northwest, but across these sprawling, wide-open 15 songs,
Modest Mouse helped redefine what was possible for guitar music.
As such, The Lonesome Crowded West has often been mimicked, but
it's awesome open-hearted existentialism and manic ambition has
rarely been matched. A modern classic that demands reappraisal.

This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About

Modest Mouse's 1996 debut album expands upon the
themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in
the band's early recordings, and finds the band mixing slow, brooding
numbers with thrashing guitar workouts. The general mood here is
one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through
both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. Modest
Mouse made their first significant mark with songs whose meanings
are simultaneously universal and painfully personal.

    Building Nothing Out Of Something

Loneliness, boredom, and random observations have been at the heart of Modest Mouse's skewered musical universe through all their releases. The Issaquah, Washington-born trio has also been able to spin very-long-playing albums that catered to the group's core obsessions, with both its full-length Up Records releases--This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and The Lonesome Crowded West clocking in at more than 70 minutes in length. So it's refreshing to hear this supremely odd rock band at its most economical. Building Nothing Out of Something catches singles, compilation tunes, and more--none of which were ever intended to be sequenced as an album. As a narrative whole, the singles take on a visionary quality, discerning worldly, bent revelations in the everyday world. The swervy vocals that Isaac Brock has made his trademark sound as languidly distressed as ever, stricken by marvel and ghastly awakenings in equal measures. The music serves Brock well, sounding wobbly and sturdy at once, as if it barely teeters on chaos's brink at a variety of mostly midtempo paces. Never Ending Math Equation, A Life of Arctic Sounds, and Other People's Lives play the most stoutly, with the tonally clean guitars breaking across all the angular phrasings and rhythms Modest Mouse thrive on while Brock's voice goes from warpy drollery to exasperated wail in the face of his task as a singer and writer.

    180° South (Original Soundtrack Recording)

The 180° South soundtrack features new music from James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells w/Danger Mouse), Mason Jennings, and Ugly Casanova (Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse with various collaborators), all of whom participated significantly in the overall film project. Songs by Jack Johnson and Love as Laughter also appear, as well as James Mercer's cover of Neil Young's Journey Through The Past. The compilation was assembled by the film's producer, Emmett Malloy, who recently directed The White Stripes' Under Great White Northern Lights.

Director Chris Malloy's film strikes deeply into the heart of Patagonia's wilderness, it was there, during the making of the film that the soundtrack was conceived. Mason Jennings and James Mercer visited Patagonia during the shooting of the film. Deeply impacted, they spent the following weeks, months and years that followed, writing music and enlisting friends such as Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock and Jack Johnson to help get the soundtrack made.

    Who's Feeling Young Now?

Punch Brothers release their new album, Whos Feeling Young Now?, on vinyl March 20. Completed over three weeks at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, the record was produced by Grammy Award winner Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse). Whos Feeling Young Now? is the follow-up to 2010s Grammy-nominated Antifogmatic, about which the New York Times said: Punch Brothers have the unplugged lineup of an old-fashioned string band But their music is as radical as new acoustic music can be.

Ten songs from Whos Feeling Young Now? were written by Punch Brothers, with the bands friend Josh Ritter co-writing lyrics on two tunes (Hundred Dollars and New York City). Additionally, the album contains the bands interpretations of Radioheads Kid A and the Swedish group VÄsens Flippen. The vinyl album was pressed on two discs of 140-gram, audiophile-quality vinyl and includes four additional Punch Brotherspenned tunes. Pre-orders include an instant download of the album track Movement and Location and an exclusive set of five custom Punch Brothers paper coasters illustrated by New Yorker cartoonist Matthew Diffee, signed by the band.

Punch Brothers was formed in 2006 by mandolinist/singer Chris Thile with four other virtuosic musicians: fiddler Gabe Witcher, banjo player Noam Pikelny, bassist Paul Kowert, and guitarist Chris Critter Eldridge. Their first Nonesuch record, Punch, was released in 2008 and combined elements of the bands many musical interests, including indie rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass, and classical music. In 2009 they all moved to New York City and began a regular, standing-room-only, residency at the Living Room, trying out new songs as well as inspired covers; these shows ultimately spawned Antifogmatic.

Whos Feeling Young Now? is less evasive than Antifogmatic and Punch, said Thile. And I feel like part of that is us becoming more comfortable with who we are as a band, and me becoming more comfortable with who I am as a singer.

    Delivery Man

In celebration of their 10-year Anniversary, Lost Highway Records is re-releasing twenty of their most acclaimed albums including Elvis Costello's The Delivery Man on limited edition clear vinyl.

With 2004's The Delivery Man, Elvis Costello & the Imposters' first release for Lost Highway, one of modern music's most admired and prolific talents delivered a remarkable album that draws on deep American musical roots more than any of his releases since King of America in 1986.

Recorded in Oxford, MS and produced by Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Counting Crows, Buddy Guy & Cracker) and Elvis Costello, it is a collection that ranges from the ferocious, bass-driven opening track, Button My Lip, which speaks in the voice of a desperate man on the verge of committing a terrible crime, to a tender and timely closing rendition of, The Scarlet Tide, referred to by Costello's co-composer and fellow Oscar Nominee, T Bone Burnett as an anti-fear song.

Like a lot of great things in music history, The Delivery Man can be said to have started with the late great Johnny Cash. The Delivery Man is actually a character imported from a song I wrote in about 1986 for Johnny Cash, Costello explains. He's based on a real character. I read this story in the paper about a man who confessed to murdering his childhood friend thirty years later, having been in prison for a number of other things. I thought this story was very interesting because he'd carried this burden of guilt of this childhood crime. I wrote a fictional version of that story in a song called 'Hidden Shame,' which John recorded.

Beyond the Imposters, longtime Attractions Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve, and more recent revelation Faragher, The Delivery Man also features winning turns from two of Costello's own favorite artists, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams.

    Fleet Foxes

Seattle's five piece band, Fleet Foxes traffic in baroque harmonic pop on this, their self titled full length debut. They draw influences from the traditions of folk, pop, choral, gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores and their peers from the Northwest. The subject matter ranges from the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold graves. Fleet Foxes is a supremely crafted and confident affair produced by the famous Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, The Shins).

    Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band

At first blush, this album recalls Wolf Parade with the band's frayed melodic sensibilities and urgent, driven vocals in particular. Of course, Wolf Parade borrowed a few ideas from Modest Mouse, whose beginnings were indebted to the Pixies. This is the sort of musical lineage that creates the foundation for this group's debut. But dig a little deeper and strains of Queen's epic rock peer through, while exhilarating guitar work that nods towards Thin Lizzy appears in more than a few songs.
