    Minimalists

In the 1960s, something happened to classical music. A bold new American voice emerged, pushing away the intricate, atonal forms of the European avant-garde and drawing on the music that most people were actually listening to. The scene led to composers having bona fide hits (Reich's Music For 18 Musicians), and aiming to do so: Philip Glass's album 'Glassworks', which featured Façades, was created with the chief aim of appealing to a much wider audience. Glass added lyricism, power and brooding emotion to the minimalist sound, though he prefers to call his work 'repetitive structures.' You can trace a line from the pulsating, stripped-down sounds of Reich, Glass and Adams to the clarity and repetition of Kraftwerk, and on through just about every type of electronic music you could ever dance to.

This limited-edition LP celebrates the state of minimalism 50 years after the movement broke down barriers in classical music.

    Brought To You By Nebraskafish

This debut is as much an homage to basement shows and house parties as it is to the indie pop tradition. Nebraskafish is a nice snapshot of the group's evolution from early minimal folk to darker, more atmospheric pieces. Music meant to be heard in a close setting with friends.

This duo has been playing together for many years as part of Black Mountain. With an abundance of creative energy to spare, they decided to start this separate project. On their self-titled debut, minimal and spacious arrangements and a moody, theatrical vocal style aptly expose the demons, creating songs that creep into your bones with a haunting chill.

    Disciples Of California

A mix of pop melodies, minimal country truisms, jingle-jangling Californianism, and angular folk. Lyrically and conceptually, the duo continue down their twisted path after five full-lengths and an EP in their five year history. The ghosts of girl-beauties, whispering trees, swimming-hole cousins, crippled horses, and human-faced animal-saints all join the dizzying parade.

    Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

This record starts with Don't Make Me A Target, a song that builds on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier hits like Small Stakes or The Way We Get By. The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric The Ghost Of You Lingers and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb to the wall-of-sound horns of radio single The Underdog. Their most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's Girls Can Tell.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have officially signed to Fat Possum for this, their self-titled debut LP. UMO was initially conceived by New Zealand native, Ruban, to release some tracks via a Bandcamp page to promote his limited edition vinyl in 2010. He pieced a band together, with skilled producer, Jake on bass and a brilliant teenage drummer named Julian to fill out the band. Based in Portland, Oregon, their debut brings break-beats together with '70s harmonies and a minimal Krautrock rhythm section.

With this fourth album for the label, simply and aptly titled Guitar & Voice, Eric Chenaux has made what in a literal sense can be called his first solo album, in that the recording features only his playing and singing; no guest or supporting musicians, minimal overdubs, and a rigorous structure that alternates back and forth between longform, mostly vocal-based tunes and shorter, cacophonously harmonious bowed-guitar instrumentals.

For Drawing Down the Moon, we focused on revisiting the very first Azure Ray record. That approach facilitated Orenda (Fink) and I bringing our sound together stylistically and emotionally after working so many years apart, explains vocalist Maria Taylor. For As Above So Below, we wanted it to be more like Azure Ray in an alternate universe. Sonically As Above is a sparser, more minimal and more electronic experience than past albums.

    Live At Third Man

    Direct-to-Acetate

The Dutchess and the Duke have made two previous albums of wonderfully sincere, heartfelt and true songs. Their self-described ''campfire punk'' is equal parts beautiful boy/girl harmonies, subdued finger-picked acoustic guitar pairings and minimal percussive accoutrements. In short... it's sublimely compelling. After a hiatus of a few years, they're slowly creeping back into live performances and Third Man could was thrilled to host one of the first, recording the set direct-to-acetate in the relaxed, intimate setting of the Blue Room.

    Philip Glass: Piano Works

Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson pays tribute to the master of minimal music, Philip Glass. Ólafsson was one of a handful of young pianists selected by Glass to perform all of his Etudes together in London, and the reviews were ecstatic. The Financial Times claimed, "Best of all was Ólafsson in the supersensitive stillness of Etude 5." In addition to the Etudes for solo piano, the album includes reworks of the originals for piano and string quartet. This recording is now available on vinyl.

    Cerulean Salt

On her second full-length record as Waxahatchee, former P.S. Eliot singer Katie Crutchfield's compelling hyper-personal poetry is continuously crushing. Cerulean Salt follows last January's American Weekend -- a collection of minimal acoustic-guitar pop written and recorded in a week at her family's Birmingham home.

On this new record, Crutchfield's songs continue to be marked by her sharp, hooky songwriting; her striking voice and lyrics that simultaneously seem hyper-personal yet relentlessly relatable, teetering between endearingly nostaglic and depressingly dark. But whereas before the thematic focus of her songcraft was on break ups and passive-aggressive crushing, this record reflects on her family and Alabama upbringing. And whereas American Weekend was mostly just Crutchfield and her guitar, Cerulean Salt is occasionally amped up, with a full band and higher-fi production.

At times, Cerulean Salt creeps closer to the sound of PS Eliot: moody, 90s-inspired rock backed by Keith Spencer and Swearin' guitarist Kyle Gilbride on drums and bass. The full band means fleshed-out fuzzy lead guitars on "Coast to Coast", its poppy hook almost masking its dark lyrics. Big distorted guitars and deep steady drums mark songs like "Misery over Dispute" and "Waiting".

There's plenty of American Weekend's instrospection and minimalism to be found, though. "Blue Pt. II" is stripped down, Crutchfield and her sister Alison (of Swearin') singing in harmony with deadpan vox. She's still an open booking, musing on self-doubt versus self-reliance, transience versus permanence. "Peace and Quiet" ebbs and flows from moody, minimal verses to a sing-song chorus. "Swan Dive" tackles nostalgia, transience, indifference, regret - over the a minimal strum of an electric-guitar, the picking at a chirpy riff and the double-time tapping of a muted drum. The album closes with a haunting acoustic-guitar reflection on "You're Damaged," possibly the best Waxahatchee song to date.

Soft and gentle songs featuring pump organs, acoustic guitars, banjos, singing saws, minimal drums, xylophones, sounds of nature, and delicate, childlike vocals, etc. It was recorded from October 27th, 1906 to January 8th, 1907 in Old Bennington, Vermont, except Aurora Borealis which was recorded around Easter 1907 on an island in Maine. Gallons used an 8 track tape recorder, tube preamps, tube compressors, and a lot of RCA ribbon microphones. He recorded and produced the album, singing most of the vocals through a phonograph flower.

Her calm, oh-so-cool and yet fragile vocals are reinforced by the minimal arrangements, so we are able to focus on her engaging lyrics filled with love, heartbreak and compassion.

    At Bay

Debut from the London based three-piece. The Wharves combine gracefully minimal psyche-rock with fuzzed out folk. Their songwriting remains consistently rich throughout 'At Bay' largely due to the startling harmonies of Gemma Fleet (bass) and Dearhla Minogue (guitar) bonding each of the albums 13 tracks. The glorious production courtesy of Rory Attwell (The Vaccines, Veronica Falls) makes for a unique debut. They invoke the spook of 60s girl groups, the mid-fi guitar crunch of The Amps, the vocal flavours of The Roches and the narrative of 70's progressive folk. Marion Andrau's thunderous drumming drives through these compositions, ensuring the wealth of disparate influences remain focused and celebratory.
