Brecker's fourth album as a leader was recorded at the Power Station in New York City and was originally released in 1996 on CD only.

Michael Brecker, a major influence on today's young saxophonists, shows off his own influences a bit throughout this fine modern straight-ahead set. Brecker sounds surprisingly like Stanley Turrentine on parts of Midnight Voyage, and otherwise displays his roots in Ernie Watts and John Coltrane. With the exception of Don Grolnick's Willie T., the music on the CD is comprised of group originals (five by the leader) and falls into the 1990s mainstream of jazz. While the tenor saxophonist has plenty of blowing space (really letting loose on the exciting closer, Cabin Fever), Pat Metheny is mostly pretty restrained (in a Jim Hall bag) except for his wild solo on guitar synth during Song for Bilbao. Pianist Joey Calderazzo starts out sounding a bit like McCoy Tyner on Slings and Arrows before his own musical personality is revealed. When Tyner himself plays on Song for Bilbao (one of two guest appearances), one can certainly tell the difference between master and pupil. All of Michael Brecker's recordings as a leader (as opposed to his cameos as a sideman on pop records) are easily recommended and show why he is considered a giant by many listeners.

    80/81

Pat Metheny's credibility with the jazz community went way up with the release of this package, a superb two-LP collaboration with a quartet of outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their electric commercial successes. From the disbanded Keith Jarrett American quartet came bassist Charlie Haden and tenor Dewey Redman - who alternates with and occasionally plays alongside tenor Michael Brecker - and Jack DeJohnette provides more combustible drumming than Metheny had ever experienced on record before. Yet Metheny's off-kilter wandering on solo electric guitar is a comfortable fit for the post-bop rhythmic crosscurrents of this music. Indeed, Haden and Metheny are in total sympathy, perhaps celebrating their mutual Missouri roots, and Metheny's difficult Pretty Scattered - which he mockingly described as Guitar Revenge! - nearly manages to stump even Redman and Brecker. The first of the Two Folk Songs is a great example of the Metheny folk-jazz fusion, with furious strummed guitar underpinning Brecker's melodic line and excursions on the outside and DeJohnette's spectacular drums. Another remarkable track is Open, a group improvisation that finds DeJohnette shaping the track's direction with a pushing solo and Metheny and the saxes emerging at the end. The two original LPs were organized so that the more distinctive Metheny fusions were on sides one and four and the overt jazz tracks occupied sides two and three.

The Paris Concert: Edition One (Awaiting Repress)

Numbered, Limited Edition! Pressed at RTI!

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Masters!

Edition One of The Paris Concert by Bill Evans was recorded live in November 1979 at L'espace Cardin in Paris, France. Evans is assisted by bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. This first edition of the two includes Gershwin's I Loves You Porgy, Rodgers & Hart's My Romance and Paul Simon's I Do It For Your Love.

Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, singing melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.

Marc Johnson is an American jazz bass player, composer, and band leader. In 1978, Johnson joined legendary pianist Bill Evans in what would be Evans' last trio. Johnson toured and recorded with Evans until the death of the pianist in 1980. His many recording credits since then include discs with Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Eliane Elias, Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Baron, Philly Joe Jones, and many others.

Joe LaBarbera is an American jazz drummer and composer. He is best known for his recordings and live performances with the trio of pianist Bill Evans in the final years of Evans' career. Prior to joining Evans he worked in the quartet of Chuck Mangione and Joe Farrell. After Evans' death in 1980, Joe joined singer Tony Bennett.

With bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe La Barbera, Evans had one of the strongest trios of his career... -Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Ahh... The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!

    Produced by George Clinton

Following up on their debut Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band [MOVLP1375], Ahh The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! is the second album by American Funk act Bootsy's Rubber Band, originally released in 1977. The album was produced by Parliament Funkadelic's funk meister George Clinton and bass player & front man William Bootsy Collins. With the help of Clinton, the band has released four LPs in the '70s. This particular album reached number One on Billboard magazine's Top R&B/Soul albums chart.

The band features Bootsy's brother Phelps Catfish Collins, Jr on guitar, Frankie Kash on drums, Frederick Flintstone Allen on drums and James Brown regulars Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley on horns. Guest appearances include saxophonist Randy and trumpeter Michael Brecker, and keyboardist Bernie Worrell, amongst others.

Everything on the album is excellent, that is true of up-tempo smokers like The Pinocchio Theory and the title song as well as slow, moody, eerie offerings such as What's a Telephone Bill? and Munchies For Your Love. The lyrics are consistently humorous and clever, the grooves are consistently infectious. Ahh... The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! bears that distinctive P-funk sound, and is essential listening for lovers of hard 1970s Funk.

Herbie Hancock's 40th album was originally released in 1996 on CD only. Hancock reinvents tunes like Don Henley's New York Minute, Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street, Simon & Garfunkel's Scarbrorough Fair and more.

On first glance this record would not seem to have much promise from a jazz standpoint. Herbie Hancock performs a set of tunes which include numbers from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Sade, Paul Simon, Prince, the Beatles (Norwegian Wood) and Kurt Cobain. However by adding vamps, re-harmonizing the chord structures, sometimes quickly discarding the melodies and utilizing an all-star band, Hancock was able to transform the potentially unrewarding music into creative jazz. Hancock, who sticks to acoustic piano, shows that he is still in prime form, taking quite a few fiery solos. With Michael Brecker on tenor and surprisingly effective soprano, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Don Alias (along with an occasional horn or string section that was dubbed in later), the results are often quite hard-swinging and certainly never predictable...

    Life On Mars

Life On Mars, considered Dexter Gilman Wansel's most successful album, was originally released on the Philadelphia International record label in 1976.

This diverse LP is far from predictable; if you bought Life on Mars for its title song (a haunting piece of space funk that employs members of Instant Funk), you quickly learned that the record also includes mellow quiet storm offerings (One Million Miles From the Ground, Together Once Again) as well as Curtis Mayfield-influenced funk (You Can Be What You Wanna Be) and pop-jazz/crossover instrumentals (A Prophet Named K.G., Theme From the Planets). In fact, one of the musicians Wansel employs is saxophonist Bob Malach, a jazzman who is heavily influenced by Michael Brecker but is more Grover Washington-influenced on this album.

John McLaughlin's 1995 album was originally released on CD only on Verve Records. The cover features a Magic-Eye graphic that contains a hidden image. McLaughlin is joined by artists such as Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Michael Brecker and more!

Originally issued in 1996 when he was 54, the Promise offers a summation of all the places John McLaughlin has been in his career, and points directly toward his future. Featuring a wide range of musicians including appearances by the Free Spirits, the Guitar Trio, and an electric version of Shakti, the Promise is easily the most wide-ranging and diverse offering of McLaughlin's long career. Its contents encompass everything from straight post-bop and swinging soul-jazz to fusion to modern takes on East Indian music as it meets the West. As if this weren't enough, there are even moments with spoken word laced throughout, such as a verse of Dante read by Stefania Bombi toward the end of his scorching, funky, soul-jazz number Thelonius Melodius with B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Dennis Chambers. The set kicks off with one of its finest moments, a guitar-to-guitar reading of John Lewis' Django with Jeff Beck (bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Mark Mondesir, and drummer Tony Hymas round it out). Beck's solo is first; it is expansive as it moves from a gorgeous restating of the melody through slinky harmonic extrapolations. McLaughlin's answer is ambitious and intuitive. They then move toward one another and the melody, complementing each other perfectly. El Ciego is a complex, flamenco-tinged jazz number with McLaughlin trading knotty lines and soulful solos with Al di Meola and Paco de Lucia. Jazz Jungle is late 20th century fusion at its blazing best with Michael Brecker, Chambers, Don Alias, James Genus, and Jim Beard beginning almost nebulously before ratcheting the tempo and idea palettes to dizzying heights (Brecker is particularly brilliant). The Wish, with Zakir Hussein, Nishat Khan, and Trilok Gurtu, looks deeply into Indian classical music balanced by a European gaze. McLaughlin's engagement with Khan's sitar creates nearly rapturous expression, all the while contained inside a texture that is as atmospheric as it is exotic. Shin Jin Rui employs the same band as Jazz Jungle, with the exception of the saxophone, played by David Sanborn. His playing is riskier than on his own records, his alto juxtaposed with McLaughlin's guitar, a study in funky, electric jazz modernism. The set closes with a lovely all-acoustic reading of Jimmy Rowles' The Peacocks with guitarist Phillipe Loi and bassist Yan Maresz, and a verse by Lorca read by Susana Beatrix as an end cap. Ultimately, the Promise stands as one of McLaughlin's towering achievements as a guitarist and leader.

    Live In Paris

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's I Love Being Here with You, Bob Dorough's Devil May Care, and Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon, Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat King Cole and Jimmy Rowles.

Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's A Case of You is a great choice for an encore, and the album concludes with Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future. -Eugene Holley Jr.

    Berlin

Ranked 344/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Nowadays acclaimed as Lou Reed's best solo album, 'Berlin' is the follow up to Reed's 'Transformer'.
A tragic rock opera about a drug addicted couple, heavy orchestrated and musically far away from the glam-rock of 'Transformer' and closer to the art-rock of the Velvet Underground (there are 2 tracks here played live by Velvet Underground in 1966, and Caroline Says is of course a redo of Stephanie Says from Velvet Underground's self- titled album).

The album got poor reviews when released in July 1973. Nevertheless, like good wines, 'Berlin' has aged and proved an inspiration for many bands.

Lou Reed got so disillusioned by the harsh critics, he did not include songs form 'Berlin' (recorded in London w/Bob Ezrin) in his live set for years.

In 2007 Lou Reed fulfilled his hopes and toured 'Berlin' with a 30-piece band; this tour was filmed and released on dvd in 2008 (which got rave reviews...).

    Feeling The Space

If you've listened to Feeling the Space, Yoko Ono's personal-is-political 1973 album, it should come as no surprise that the once-reviled artist is inspiring a new generation of activists in 2017.On such songs as the righteous chant "Woman Power," the empathetic ballad "Angry Young Woman," the hilarious proto-grrrl "Potbelly Rocker," and the satirical "Men Men Men," Yoko sings in surprisingly straightforward fashion about the burdens carried by women and the mandate for feminism. Supported by such skilled studio vets as guitarist David Spinozza, sax player Michael Brecker, and drummer Jim Keltner, this is perhaps Yoko's most accessible album, and her most intimate.

Feeling the Space was recorded during the time when the avant-garde visionary artist became estranged from her rock-star husband John Lennon. He plays only briefly on the album (billed as Johnny O'cean); she produced and wrote all the songs. The result is a definitive soundtrack/document of the era of consciousness raising and of radical critique of the family structure. Yoko and company deliver this hard message soft rock style, or as soft as Yoko could get. Yoko was on the front lines of the women's liberation movement. Dedicated "to the sisters who died in pain and sorrow and those who are now in prisons and in mental hospitals for being unable to survive in the male society," it's an emotional exploration of the psychological toll of oppression.

    Live In Paris (Awaiting Repress)

Available for the first time on 180 Gram 45rpm Double Vinyl! One of Diana's most sought after albums!

The first-ever live concert recording from Grammy®-winning vocalist/pianist Diana Krall was Recorded at the Paris Olympia Theatre. Here finally, captured in amazing audio quality, is an album showcasing the magic of Kralls concert performances.

Krall and her band perform some of the tunes from Kralls studio recordings, such as East of the Sun (West of the Moon) and Devil May Care. They are joined by special guests John Pisano (acoustic guitar) and Paulinho DaCosta (percussion) for several tracks, including the Gershwins Swonderful. The Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, conducted by Alan Broadbent with special guest conductor Claus Ogerman, is featured on the upbeat Lets Fall in Love and a haunting interpretation of Ive Got You Under My Skin.

Soundstage Rated 5 out of 5 for Recording Quality!
A favorite of audiophiles because her music and voice lend themselves to purist recording techniques, Diana Krall perpetually sounds in great form on her recordings... The sound, remastered by Bernie Grundman, is clear, spacious and well defined -- outstanding in every way, the backing players as vivid as Krall's voice and piano... - Marc Mickelson, soundstage.com, May 2009

Featured on the album are live renditions of The Look of Love, the title track from Kralls platinum-certified Verve release, her first recorded version of the Joni Mitchell-penned A Case of You, and Fly Me to the Moon, a song not included on the previously-released DVD Diana Krall Live in Paris (Eagle Eye/Pioneer Entertainment).

Also on this recording is a special bonus studio tracka rendition of Billy Joels Just The Way You Are featuring Michael Brecker's beautiful tenor sax solo.

One of Diana Kralls most beloved CDs, Live in Paris, has been given a loving audiophile LP remastering treatment by ace engineer legend, Bernie Grundman and produced by an audiophile label new to us, Original Recordings. The shimmering string arrangements on Lets Fall in Love and Ive Got You Under My Skin, are testament alone to the real life power of vinyl... - Audiophile Audition

Bernie Grundmans remastering for vinyl puts Live in Paris in the gold plated category for the legions of Krall aficionados. This two-LP audiophile edition would make an ideal late night listening experience, or the perfect background soundtrack for a special dinner party. - Audiophile Audition

The recording, engineered by legend Al Schmitt, sounded good on CD. But ORG's stellar two-disc, 180-gram vinyl reissue, remastered by Bernie Grundman, trumps it. Surfaces are dead quiet, and the LP is lighter on its feet, more layered, airier, finer grained, and more transparent. Live in Paris is a great addition to a choice LP collection. - Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, January 2010, Issue 200, reviewing the 180g ORG 33 1/3rpm version

In order to achieve the BEST possible sound ORG has cut The Look Of Love on 4 sides and at 45rpm to allow the maximum cutting level. This gives the record the best signal to noise ratio, better dynamics, less inner groove distortion and better overall sound!

From the luxurious opening chords of the first track, even before Diana Krall has sung a single beautiful note, The Look of Love, will have you hooked. After winning a Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy for 1999's platinum-selling When I Look in Your Eyes, Diana Krall delivers her best album yet - a lush, cinematic collection of ballads and bossa nova tunes. Featuring the London Symphony Orchestra arranged and conducted by the legendary Claus Ogerman, The Look of Love brings to mind such classic Frank Sinatra albums as In the Wee Small Hours and Only The Lonely. These elegant piano solos, the sensual vocals, and the wickedly modern sense of humor are, inimitably, all Diana Krall.

The Look of Love is the fifth album by Diana Krall in a row that Tommy LiPuma, Verve Music Group Chairman, produced. LiPuma is also known for his work with Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Joao Gilberto, Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn. Regarding Claus Ogerman, Diana Krall said that, together with Johnny Mandel, he has been her favorite arranger/composer since she was seventeen. Ogerman had an important role on albums recorded by Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ogerman also had been working for years together with LiPuma, for the first time on George Benson's outstanding album Breezin'. Since Claus Ogerman featuring Michael Brecker in 1990, the two had gone separate ways. But when Diana Krall was on tour in Munich, LiPuma arranged for her to have lunch with Ogerman. That is how the pianist/singer, the arranger/composer and the producer began to work on a common project: The Look of Love.

Diana's songs were arranged by Claus Ogerman who also conducts the London Symphony Orchestra. The Look of Love gives an impression of unity despite the fact that it contains material from a lot of different sources: e.g. Cry Me A River by Julie London, Love Letters by Nat King Cole and jazz-standards such as Dancing in the Dark by Arthur Schwartz (music)/Howard Dietz (text), I Remember You by Victor Scherzinger/John Mercer and 'S Wonderful by George and Ira Gershwin.

The Paris Concert: Edition Two (Pre-Order)

Numbered, Limited Edition! Pressed at RTI!

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Masters!

Edition Two of The Paris Concert by Bill Evans was recorded live in November 1979 at L'espace Cardin in Paris, France. Evans is assisted by bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. This second edition of the two includes Miles Davis' Nardis as well as 34 Skidoo.

The music is sensitive and subtly exciting. Until the release of some later live sessions from 1980, this could be considered Bill Evans' final recording and serves as evidence that, rather than declining, he was showing a renewed vitality and enthusiasm in his last year. -Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Lavish Packaging Includes Opulent Box And Special Foil-Stamped Jackets: Deluxe Audiophile Pressing Strictly Limited To 6000 Numbered Copies

Cinema For The Ears: The Nightly Remains One Of The Best-Sounding Albums Ever Made With Reference Production, Standout Playing, And Jazz-Like Arrangements That Embody Timeless Cool

Donald Fagen's largely autobiographical The Nightfly remains one of the best-sounding albums ever made. Revered by audiophiles, the Steely Dan co-founder's 1982 set immediately became a demonstration disc at hi-fi shows and audio salons the world over. It also quickly emerged as an irreplaceable monitor-evaluating tool for recording-studio engineers and front-of-the-house testing device for concert-venue soundboard engineers who continue to use it today. Painstakingly recorded over eight months by illustrious producer Gary Katz and a Hall of Fame-worthy cast of perfectionist-minded musicians, The Nightfly endures as a rare trifecta of superlative performance, consummate songwriting, and crisp, benchmark production. Mobile Fidelity is honored to give this seminal effort unsurpassed treatment befitting the most serious music connoisseurs.

Fagen's solo debut reaches three-dimensional sonic and emotional heights never before attained by analog recordings on Mobile Fidelity's opulent UD1S (UltraDisc One-Step) box set. Strictly limited to 5,000 numbered copies, this ultra-hi-fi collector's edition literally and figuratively brings you closer to music that picks up where Steely Dan's Gaucho leaves off. You'll enjoy deep-black backgrounds, boundless soundstaging, pointillist details, staggering dynamics, and arguably, the most lifelike tonalities and nuances ever committed to vinyl. Experienced via UD1S, The Nightfly places Fagen and his session pros in your listening room. Every note, breath, and movement is reproduced with exquisite accuracy, wowing clarity, and impeccable balance. Consider this edition your new go-to reference.

The lavish packaging and beautiful presentation of Mobile Fidelity's The Nightfly pressing befit its extremely select status. Housed in a deluxe box, this UD1S version contains special foil-stamped jackets and faithful-to-the-original graphics that illuminate the splendor of the recording. No expense has been spared. Aurally and visually, this reissue of The Nightfly is a curatorial artifact meant to be preserved, poured over, touched, and examined. It is made for discerning listeners that prize sound quality and creativity, and who desire to fully immerse themselves in the art - and everything involved with the album, from the images to the textures and liner notes.

Nominated for seven Grammy Awards, The Nightfly represent[s] certain fantasies that might have been entertained by a young man growing up in the remote suburbs of a northeastern city during the late fifties and early sixties, i.e., one of my general height, weight, and build, pens Fagen in the liner notes, revealing the work's thematic thrust and wistful, nostalgic appeal. At their core, songs look at the world via an optimistic, mindfully innocent lens and through the eyes of an adolescent holed up in his bedroom with his ear to a radio whose exciting transmissions inspire thoughts of futuristic cities, late-night deejays, otherworldly hopes, and Cold War romances. Cinema for the ears, The Nightfly comes on like a film transferred to wax - its stories filled with relatable vulnerability, ambition, and warmth.

It is also timelessly cool, with everything from the iconic album cover - complete with Fagen in the role of a cigarette-smoking disk jockey spinning a Sonny Rollins album on an RCA turntable at 4:09 in the morning - to the flawless playing honoring the laid-back, hip, stylish jazz pedigree of the arrangements. Indeed, The Nightfly's fame owes as much to the stunning contributions by stickler musicians - saxophonist Michael Brecker, trumpeter Randy Brecker, guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and Harmonica Frank Floyd included - as it does the particulars behind its creation, which involved cutting-edge technology, novel microphoning techniques, and pioneering recording methods that gave Fagen exactly what he demanded. His insistence on dialing in exacting drum sounds is by itself the stuff of legend.

The results of the meticulous sessions transcend eras and generations - part of its very design. Virtually every track connects with classic 50s and 60s styles. Green Flower Street doubles as an homage to the jazz standard On Green Dolphin Street. The title track draws imagery from blues pioneer Charley Patton. Ruby Baby references soul greats the Drifters. Maxine nods to harmonies perfected by big-band vocal quartets like the Four Freshmen. The Goodbye Look acknowledges the bossa-nova craze of Fagen's youth. In all respects, The Nightfly rules the airwaves.

More About Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step and Why It Is Superior

Instead of utilizing the industry-standard three-step lacquer process, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's new UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) uses only one step, bypassing two processes of generational loss. While three-step processing is designed for optimum yield and efficiency, UD1S is created for the ultimate in sound quality. Just as Mobile Fidelity pioneered the UHQR (Ultra High-Quality Record) with JVC in the 1980s, UD1S again represents another state-of-the-art advance in the record-manufacturing process. MFSL engineers begin with the original master tapes and meticulously cut a set of lacquers. These lacquers are used to create a very fragile, pristine UD1S stamper called a convert. Delicate converts are then formed into the actual record stampers, producing a final product that literally and figuratively brings you closer to the music. By skipping the additional steps of pulling another positive and an additional negative, as done in the three-step process used in standard pressings, UD1S produces a final LP with the lowest noise floor possible today. The removal of the additional two steps of generational loss in the plating process reveals tremendous amounts of extra musical detail and dynamics, which are otherwise lost due to the standard copying process. The exclusive nature of these very limited pressings guarantees that every UD1S pressing serves as an immaculate replica of the lacquer sourced directly from the original master tape. Every conceivable aspect of vinyl production is optimized to produce the most perfect record album available today.
