Smith Westerns consists of Cullen Omori (vocals), Max Kakacek (guitar) and Cameron Omori (bass). All members range from ages 19 to 20. Since forming in 2007, Smith Westerns have managed to tour both the U.S. and Europe while supporting the likes of MGMT, Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastian, Girls and Passion Pit. Their self recorded 'lo-fi' self-titled debut was released in 2009 to critical acclaim for their youthful and glam rock tinged approach to pop music.

In 2010, Smith Westerns teamed up with Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TVOTR, Beach House) and current record label Fat Possum to record their sophomore effort in a proper studio. The result is a cleaner/higher quality recording of lush, layered timeless pop songs with emphasis on the guitar virtuosity of Led Zeppelin and the arena rock anthem's of Oasis.

    Waxing Romantic

"Catchy as hell; it has the mark of someone who knows his way
    around a hook -Stereogum

"'Promises' might be jarringly summery for the time of year, with
flourishes of Balearic guitar and bright, chiming piano, but it has an
easy psychedelic flow that's welcome anytime -NME

"It sounds like pina coladas and an afternoon spent woozily
wandering around, slightly tipsy from said cocktails, hand-in-hand
with a beautiful partner in crime -Noisey

"Contagious' aptly describes Bretzer's work. Each song's
instrumentation glows front to back, and never does he close the
door on his sensibilities. -Consequence of Sound

Waxing Romantic is the debut album from Canadian artist Travis
Bretzer. Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, 24-year-old Bretzer has an
appropriately singular, off-beat take on guitar pop.

On Waxing Romantic, Travis has stepped up the production in a big
way, graduating from the bedroom to a full studio environment.
Recorded at Gary's Electric in Brooklyn and produced by Jorge
Elbrecht (of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Lansing-Dreiden fame)
the new environment has allowed for Travis' songs to be taken to new,
fully-realized heights. The album also features a solid crew of players,
including members of Haunted Graffiti, James Richardson of MGMT
and Regal Degal's Josh da Costa, who was key in shaping drum
    arrangements.

As the title indicates, Waxing Romantic is thematically concerned with
love. For Travis, the album reads like a storybook of the first couple of
years of his current relationship, with each song acting like a totem for
different events and moments. For this reason, the album is very
personal - it navigates the giddy and elated feelings of falling in love,
and the process of looking back and reflecting on it. In keeping with
the album's '70s pop mode, the lyrics are kept simple and sweet, but
    never cloying.

Lead single "Promises" is built around a breezy, cascading guitar riff
and oozes a casual temperament. Warm slide guitars and fuzzy
power-pop riffs color the lofty melodies of "Lonely Heart". Elsewhere,
"Idle By" recalls the glistening guitar lines of Felt, and "Lady Red"
shows Travis doing his best scrubbed up, sophisticated pop song.

Tame Impala are a rainbow sandstorm of stoned riffage, mindbending melody and blissed out adventurism from the most isolated city in the world who echo the lighter side of Cream, Blue Cheer and Kyuss. This is the long-awaited fully distributed release of their debut album, Innerspeaker in North America.

Innerspeaker is Tame Impala's chance to paint a far more extensive picture, and sure enough it redrafts the entire Tame Impala world as we knew it into an explosive, cosmic wonderland of ecstatic harmony and perfectly accessible journeys into inner space.

Recorded and produced by the bands own Kevin Parker with Death In Vegas Tim Holmes on the engineer duties, in an enormous mansion with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. It was then mixed in upstate New York, by renowned sonic maverick Dave Fridmann (MGMT/Flaming Lips).

    Oracular Spectacular

Despite being founded in Connecticut by Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden in 2002, MGMT from the start sounded more Brooklyn than Bedford Avenue. Their productions are hard to describe, but if you mix psychedelic with proto-electro punk, shake it up with art noise and add some indie-pop, you just might have got the picture.

Oracular Spectacular is the first major label studio album by MGMT and ultimately enjoyed both critical approval and commercial success, with the album selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S. and going platinum in Australia, the U.K., and Ireland. Oracular Spectacular features MGMT's signature song Kids, the funky track Electric Feel (famously covered by Weezer) and the smashing opening track Time to Pretend. The tunes sound classic and new all at once, paying homage to Bowie, the Kinks, and the Stones, while updating traditional progressions with flashes of Royal Trux, Ween, and LCD Soundsystem.

Oracular Spectacular was named the best album of 2008 by NME and In 2009, Rolling Stone named it the 18th-best album of the decade.

The successor to 2008's Oracular Spectacular and 2010's Congratulations, MGMT's self titled third album finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music.

Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of "Introspection" by 1960's psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo's encompassing surrealist view of the everyday.

    Hot Thoughts

'Hot Thoughts', Spoon's 9th album, is the bravest, most sonically inventive work of their career, though keep in mind, Britt Daniel's already overseen a number of other reincarnations. With all due respect to earlier efforts that have made the quintet both critically acclaimed and a commercial contender, preconceptions about this band are about to be obliterated. That's not to say 'Hot Thoughts' doesn't have a requisite supply of infectious earworms but there's a lyrical bent that's as carnal as it's crafty, and a newfound sense of sonic exploration that results in the genre-smasher Spoon have flirted with in the past but not fully consummated.

Produced by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, The Flaming Lips, Weezer, MGMT) and back with Matador (third time's the charm) helps position Spoon to mount the highest highs of their already spectacular career.

We are overjoyed to be back in the Spoon business and in time for Daniel's spot in the pantheon of rock's genius songwriters was well established a ways back - with the crackling, incandescent, multi-dimensional backdrop conjured on 'Hot Thoughts', the lines between accessible and experimental become non-factors for once and all. It's pop as high art, delivered with total confidence and focus.

    Exploding Head

Exploding Head is A Place To Bury Strangers' sophomore album and first for Mute. The band had one simple goal during the recording process: The original idea, says vocalist/guitarist Oliver Ackermann, was to create the craziest, most f'ed-up recording ever.

In late 2008, shortly following a support slot on MGMT's U.K. tour, APTBS began tracking new songs at Death By Audio, the rehearsal/recording/living space that Ackermann helped build in 2005. The DIY-or-die building is also an independent venue and the headquarters of Ackermann's Death By Audio company, a customized guitar pedal manufacturer that counts U2, TV on the Radio and My Bloody Valentine among its many happy customers.

During the Exploding Head recording process engineer Andy Smith (Paul Simon, David Bowie) took the band to a whole other level says Ackermann. I love the interplay and contrasts between something that's pretty and something that's scary, he explains. Taking listeners to different places, even in one song, is so important, whether it makes them cry or pissed off. If you listen closely, some of the riffs on this record are actually like Ramones songs or '60s bubblegum pop.

    Jessie Jones

In 2013, Jessie Jones gave up her possessions, vanished into the nothingness of farm country, and found herself on interstellar overdrive - far away from her Disneyfied home in Orange County. For three years, she had fronted Burger Records' Feeding People, OC's answer to Black Sabbath. The teenage byproduct of gloomy acid trips and gospel choirs, Feeding People released two albums, got signed to Innovative Leisure in 2011, and played Low End Theory with Radiohead's Thom Yorke . The 19-year-old Jones, with her bluesy growl and whimsical melodies, was being compared to Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, and Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster. In 2014, her voice returned to her with primal intent - like the caterwauling echoes of coyotes deep in the Hollywood hills. Earlier this year, Jones began singing with paranormal proto-punk outfit Death Valley Girls, which allowed her to release her demons and find salvation during what Jones describes as the most cosmically ordained project of her life. Reveling in the quantum wobble of her own alternative reality, Jones is now releasing her self-titled debut on Burger Records by channeling the voices in her head; not quite the sanitarium blues of Roky Erickson, but a mÉlange of Jim Morrison mysticism; a more stripped-down MGMT meets early-Grouplove; and Syd Barrett reverie. Under the guidance of producer Bobby Harlow (The Go) and Burger's Studio B, Jones' debut this summer will include guest appearances by drummer Duke Mushroom, violinist Hannah Glass, and Studio B regular King Tuff.

How did a Wisconsin chair company, producing records on the cheap and run by men with little knowledge of their audience or the music business, build one of the greatest musical rosters ever assembled under one roof? The answer lies in 'The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records 1917-1932,' an epic, two-volume omnibus of art, words and music housed in a limited-edition, hand-sculpted cabinet-of-wonder, to be jointly released by Jack White's Third Man Records and John Fahey's Revenant Records.

'Volume One,' which covers the label's improbable rise from 1917-1927, will be released exclusively through Third Man on October 29, and worldwide on November 19. The project is co-produced by leading Paramount authority Alex van der Tuuk, and 'Volume 2' will be released in November 2014.

Paramount Records was founded on a modest proposition: produce records as cheaply as possible, recording whatever talent was available. Over its lifetime, the label would become a "race records" powerhouse, its sound and fortunes directly linked to the Great Migration.

By the time Paramount ceased operations in 1932, it had compiled a dizzying array of performers still unrivaled to this day, spanning early jazz titans (Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller), blues masters (Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Skip James), American divas (Ma Rainey, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters), gospel (Norfolk Jubilee Quartette), vaudeville (Papa Charlie Jackson), and the indefinable "other" (Geeshie Wiley, Elvie Thomas). Paramount would also directly influence the style of Robert Crumb and countless other 20th century artists and illustrators, through a series of hand-drawn ads promoting its releases in the pages of the Chicago Defender.

The 'Rise and Fall' wonder-cabinet gives equal status to page-turning narrative and new scholarship; original and newly created graphic art; industrial design; and compelling analog and digital music experiences.

6 LPs feature 87 tracks from the collection.

USB Drive contains 800 digital tracks by 172 artists across the Paramount family of labels, including the earliest recordings of:
King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Blind Blake, Fats Waller, Ma Rainey, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, Alberta Hunter, Papa Charlie Jackson, Ethel Waters, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny and Baby Dodds, Bo Weavil Jackson, Jimmy O'Bryant, Buddy Boy Hawkins, Tiny Parham, Jimmy Blythe, and Jaybird Coleman.

Comprised of frontman Ryan Schaefer, drummer Chris Rusk and guitarist Sam Stratton, Royal Bangs combine catchy hooks with heavy synths to create a sound that SPIN Magazine describes as a mix of LCD Soundsystem's pulsing eletro-punk and the new Wave-y shimmer of the Strokes.

Hailing from Knoxville, TN, Royal Bangs received some local buzz from their self-recorded album We Breed Champions, catching the attention of Patrick Carney (The Black Keys) who then re-released the progressive album on his own record label. The band followed up that effort with Let It Bleep which was released in 2009 to critical acclaim.

Man It Feels Like Space Again (Awaiting Repress)

Australia's Pond was conceived by two members of Tame Impala's touring band. Their new album, Man It Feels Like Space Again lives up to the inherent wonder in its title, a sweeping collection of warm, warped psychedelic gems. It brings to mind the work of The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, mid-'70s Lennon, MGMT, Todd Rundgren, Supergrass and any number of other genre-hopping sonic/space-explorers.

In its 45 minutes, the album covers an extraordinary amount of ground. Opener 'Waiting Around For Grace' sounds like an FM pop hit beamed in from a nearby planet, all wonky propulsion and giddy hooks - the perfect opening blast. Lead single, 'Elvis' Flaming Star' stomps like a '70s glam band coached by Bowie, before collapsing into and out of a mid-tune daydream.

    They Want My Soul

    The music:

    Spoon's most straight-up, direct and concise rock album ever;
    A certain "return to form" as a straight up American rock band, a restoration of Spoon's trademark authority, confidence and swagger;
Music runs a gamut from AC/DC-esque guitar-driven songs like the opener "Rent I Pay" to stunning cosmic space disco tracks like "Outlier" to delicately
    pensive album standout "Inside Out".

    The story:

After 6 years of incessant recording and touring, band took a 4.5 year break between albums. Spoon returns more invigorated and energized than at any
    point in their career;
    Core audience will love the return to Spoon-y form via future greatest hits like Do You, Let Me Be Mine and They Want My Soul;
The addition of new people around the band and recording process, namely multi-instrumentalist Alex Fischel and legendary producer Dave Fridmann
(MGMT, Tame Impala, Flaming Lips), has expanded the band's oeuvre into new and exciting sonic terrain, most notable heard in Inside Out, Knock
    Knock Knock and Outlier.

    Infinite House

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York's Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges' Library of Babel, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album. Recorded by drummer Julian Fader and vocalist/guitar player Carlos Hernandez, and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, MGMT), it is safely their most polished recording to date. But their trademark intensity, mirthful humor, and angularity remain resolutely in place, the burnished surfaces illuminating the stories beneath like never before. By questioning, or maybe just forgetting the rules of the real world, on Infinite House the band has grown beyond the nervous soul descriptor they've been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.

    Constant Future

Constant Future is the career-defining statement from Brooklyn-based noise-pop trio Parts & Labor. The albums 12 tracks deliver the bare essentials that made them sui generis totems of modern art-punk: synthesized keyboard riffs distorted into oblivion, percussion pummeled hypnotically, crackling drones that haunt and soothe, fearless melodies hollered skyward. Their last release, 2008s acclaimed Receivers, saw Parts & Labor blasting off in all directions and creating collage art from hundreds of fan-curated samples. But fifth album Constant Future finds them crashing back to earth, focusing pointedly on what they do best: unique, electronic landscapes melded with buzzing, anthemic hooks. Parts & Labor have distilled the lessons and experiences of nearly 10 years as a band into a catchy, blown-out masterwork.

Maximalist engineer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mogwai, Sleater-Kinney, MGMT) co-produced and mixed the album with P&L at his Tarbox Road Studios in Casadega, NY. A band already known for their dense, futuristic sound was ultimately transformed into something massive, beaming, downright nuclear. The album is the product of two years of vigorous writing and demoing which resulted in more than 40 songs. For the actual recording, Parts & Labor settled in a former boxing ring in Milwaukee to track the record themselves, with drummer Joe Wong leading the charge.

Over Constant Future's 39 minutes, vocalists Dan Friel and BJ Warshaw steadfastly chronicle several whirlwind years of growth, taking lyrical cues from the artful work of their musical heroes (Sonic Youth, Lungfish, Fugazi,Wire). The pair weave tales of teeth-baring city-scapes (Fake Names, Echo Chamber), the anxiety of death (Rest, Never Changer) and the horrifying pitfalls of our nascent century (Outnumbered, Skin And Bones). But, as their sunny refrains would imply, theres always a glimmer of hope, acceptance and love buried just beneath Parts & Labors paranoid surface (Without A Seed, Hurricane, A Thousand Roads).

    This Is The Life

They told me all is fair in love and war, so I killed the one I've been fighting for.

So went the process for Hunter Morris after the dissolution of his prior band Gift Horse. A professional fly fishing guide by trade, he spent a year on the trout streams of north Georgia literally and figuratively far away from the music scene in his home of Athens, GA. This time of reflection produced the songs that would become Blue Blood. But it was the process of reinvention that provided the inspiration for these songs long before there were finished lyrics, structures, and arrangements.

Blue Blood began as a new solo project for Morris, but through the process of making demos in solitude and trying to find a new voice for his songs, what emerged was a collection of songs worthy of full band, psychedelic pop treatment. And Morris knew just the person for the job. He sent some of the songs to Hank Sullivant, who fronts Kuroma, was a founding member of The Whigs, and is currently the guitarist for MGMT, and who had previously produced the Gift Horse LP "Mountain of Youth". After hearing Morris' demos, Sullivant immediately assumed a more involved producer/instrumentalist role and the studio version of Blue Blood became a collaboration between the two. Morris and Sullivant recruited J.J. Bower (Dead Confederate, Battle Tapes) to play the drums, as well as keyboardist Dave Spivey, and they recently completed what will be the debut Blue Blood LP "This Is The Life", which will be released in October of 2014 on This Is American Music.

The album was definitely the foundation upon which Blue Blood was built, as Morris and Sullivant essentially completed recording it before Blue Blood ever played a live show. However, it is the live lineup of Blue Blood that has brought the songs into their own. Morris says that having the songs recorded prior to forming a band to play them made the learning process much more efficient. But it's what each member brings of their own playing style and personality that give the songs an added depth in the live setting.
