    4th Street Feeling

    What's the 4th Street Feeling?

"4th Street is in Leavenworth," says Melissa Etheridge.

That's her home town in Kansas, pop. 35,000, known mostly for its prison and Army base.

And it's the place evoked in the title, and title song, of 4th Street Feeling, the 12th studio album of her singular, 25-year recording career.

"It's kind of the main drag, starting in the old downtown," she says of her old stomping grounds. "I remember the first McDonald's in town there. The town's pretty small. That's where we would hang out, the Burger King parking lot, the football games. Everything was on Fourth Street. That's where we would cruise. And then it turns into Highway 7 that goes out of town to Kansas City."

That's exactly where the album opens, with the bluesy, harmonica-spiced "Kansas City." The scene is set with Etheridge driving in "my old man's Delta 88," reliving road-trips fueled on "Lucky Charms, Tic Tacs and Mom's amphetamines." Only this time, the woman who left Leavenworth for Hollywood years ago is taking herself - and us - home. It's a trip to where she's from. But also a trip to where she's headed.

There are "all the untold lies of my misspent youth," as she sings in the funky coming-of-age tale "The Shadow of the Black Crow," a song in the storytelling tradition of such cherished artists as the Eagles and Bob Seger. There is the demand to "Be Real" ("You can't manufacture me, because I like it naturally"), a song in which she says she nods lovingly to the sultry, sexy soul of Rufus with Chaka Khan and Sly and the Family Stone. And she voyages into new territories of folky rock with the first single, "Falling Up," a joyful, upbeat track featuring her spirited recording debut on the banjitar, a hybrid banjo-guitar.

The fuel for this trek is her inner strength and confidence. In part it comes from recognition - 2011 has seen her awarded with a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, and in the Fall of 2012 she will be honored by the National Women's Museum of Art in Washington, DC. But more so, if it comes from within.

"There's a certain confidence and assurance I get from all this, knowing that I can keep my day job," she laughs. "That shows on this album. I am fearless on this. I'm going to have fun. I had to love every note on this album."

    MEmphis Rock And Soul

Melissa Etheridge has announced the release of her new album MEmphis Rock and Soul, a tribute to Stax Records and the rich history of classic Southern soul, scheduled for release via Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group. The album is a collection of deep soul covers associated with the original Stax label, including songs recorded by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, William Bell and more. The album also features new, original verses written by Melissa on two of the tracks.

While the original Stax studio is long gone, Etheridge took to another hallowed local spot, Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios (home to Al Green, Ann Peebles and others), to channel the classic Memphis sounds found on these soulful standards. MEmphis Rock and Soul was produced by Willie's son Boo Mitchell, and features a backing band comprised of Hodges Brothers and other top Memphis musicians who are legends in their own right. Etheridge even recorded with Al Green's famed RCA 77DX ribbon microphone (No. 9"). MEmphis Rock and Soul also spotlights the empowering role Stax played in the Civil Rights Movement, a fitting theme for Melissa, who has become a pivotal voice of the modern LGBT rights movement.

Brand New Compilation, Vinyl Only Release!

Californian Pop Rock group Venice started in the town by the same name in 1977 by cousins Michael and Kipp Lennon. Members of Venice have performed alongside, or recorded with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Phil Collins, Sting, Melissa Etheridge, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol, and the list goes on and on.

To date, Venice has found their biggest success in The Netherlands. In 2003, the band won an Edison Award (the Dutch version of the Grammy) for Best International Artist, beating out superstars U2 and Coldplay. In The Netherlands Venice's singles are a mainstay on radio, their tours sell out consistently, and they've been guests on countless television programs.

Venetian Vinyl is a brand new vinyl-only Best Of compilation of this long standing band. As the band themselves put it: ''The band sat together for days, choosing our favorite acoustic based tracks from previous albums...then we sequenced them in an order that we think really flows...giving you a compilation album you can put on, then kick back on the couch, kick your shoes off, grab your favorite beverage and relax while we massage your ear drums with what we feel is the best of our vocal harmonies and vibey tracks we've created to date.'' Echoes

Wally Badarou is a French-born synthesizer specialist, and long-time associate of the British band Level 42, known for its blend of funk, pop, soul and rock. He has co-written and performed on a number of the band's tracks since their recording d√Čbut in 1980, later co-producing them. Though not an official member, he has long been considered an informal fifth member.

Badarou was one of the Compass Point All Stars (with Sly and Robbie, Barry Reynolds, Mikey Chung and Uziah Sticky Thompson), the in-house recording team of Compass Point Studios responsible for a long series of albums of the 1980s recorded by Grace Jones, Tom Tom Club, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Black Uhuru, Gwen Guthrie, Jimmy Cliff and Gregory Isaacs. His keyboard playing can also be heard on albums by Robert Palmer, Marianne Faithfull, Herbie Hancock, Talking Heads, Foreigner, Melissa Etheridge, Manu Dibango and Miriam Makeba.

Echoes (1983) is his second solo album, which included Chief Inspector, Hi-Life and Mambo, which was sampled for Massive Attack's Daydreaming of the Blue Lines album. You can actually feel Caribbean sunshine with this music. Badarou breathes real life into his synthesizers on this album of happy, upbeat, and danceable instrumentals.
