Previously known for feedback-drenched pop songs and gothic surf/blues storms, The Jesus & Mary Chain followed a successful year of touring in 1992 (including a slot on the second Lollapalooza tour) by entering the studio to record an acoustic album. The sessions were the first time that principal members Jim and William Reid had embarked on a recording with a full band since their incendiary debut, but the results could not have been different.
Though the hooks were still there, Stoned & Dethroned emerged with a calmer, almost folk/country-tinged sound. Any feedback appears as hazy atmospherics rather than pain-inducing squeals. The sound of the album nobly approximates the drugged swagger of the classic early-70s Rolling Stones records, but with The Jesus & Mary Chains uniquely foreboding lyrical perspective.
The albums first single, Sometimes Always featuring Mazzy Stars Hope Sandoval, was an MTV and modern rock radio hit. The song updated the Lee & Nancy/Porter & Dolly duet mold with a catchy hook and ringing guitar lead. It became an instant classic. It was also no coincidence that the sonics of Stoned & Dethroned resembled those of Mazzy Stars electric/acoustic psych hybrid. Sandoval and the elder Reid were a couple at the time of its recording and he was obviously feeling the pull of the West Coast vibes. Another guest vocalist, The Pogues Shane MacGowan, provides the anguished lead on the stellar God Help Me.
The Jesus & Mary Chain picked the perfect time to make this record. Their sonic assaults and industrial pop couldve only taken them so far. PyramidsNow, several years since its initial release, Pyramids first collection of songs resounds like a communique from a far off galaxy. It could be the music made by Martian interpreters who somehow intercepted and reconfigured the decaying din emanating from the charred surface of Planet Earth.
The resultant impressions sound like cut up fever dream tape loops containing snippets of Xasthur, Tangerine Dream and Mazzy Star layered over, under and through each other. The aural pictures are at once terrifying and soothing, familiar and wholly alien. What seems like it shouldn't does in fact work: black metal blasting stitched together with patches of gauzy melody and angelic warbling. It's one of the most enveloping and simultaneously disorienting documents to have emerged from the hazy outer territories of the heavy music underground in years.
Despite the numerous musical mutations that have sprung up around it since its initial release, Pyramids debut still sounds far beyond the horizons of anything concocted by modern musical scientists. Perhaps through a process of reversed time flow, Pyramids have brought the sounds of the future into our present moment, speculative fiction in aural form. Dark PlaceSome singers can create a mood far before the first syllables of lyric have been
woven into a full story; a tone, mixed to dissolve perfectly into music, can say it
all. Such is the case with Jessie Baylin, whose ethereal voice shoots the opening
notes of Dark Place, her fourth album, into instant emotive territory - it envelops
in a mysterious gauze, setting the stage for what is her most raw, personal

Baylin's always been adept at capturing the fragile, complex state of
human relationships with a hand that understands the middle ground - things
aren't always what they seem, and she isn't afraid to play in that treacherous territory.

The name is a partial misnomer. Though the band hails from Los Angeles, they do not partake in any sort of witchcraft. Yet their ability to conjure a specific time and place through their sound does suggest a kind of magic. On their eponymous debut album, L.A. Witch's reverb-drenched guitar jangle and sultry vocals conjure the analog sound of a collector's prized 45 from some short-lived footnote cult band. The melodies forgo the bubblegum pop for a druggy haze that straddles the line between seedy glory and ominous balladry; the production can't afford Phil Spector's wall-of-sound, but the instruments' simple beauty provides an economic grace that renders studio trickery unnecessary; the lyrics seem more descendent of Johnny Cash's first-person morality tales than the vacuous empty gestures of pre-fab pop bands. This isn't music for the masses; it's music for miscreants, burnouts, down-and-out dreamers, and obsessive historians.
Album opener Kill My Baby Tonight is the perfect introduction to the band's marriage of '60s girls-in-the-garage charm and David Lynch's surreal exposÉs of Southern California's underbelly.Sade Sanchez's black velvet vocals disguise the malicious intent of this murder ballad, with the thumping pulse of bassist Irita Pai, the slow-burn build of drummer Ellie English, and Sanchez's Desert guitar twang helping beguile the listener into becoming a willing accomplice to the narrator's crimes. Brian follows the opening track with a similarly graceful, if not somewhat ominous, slow-mo take on a well-worn jukebox 7. Only In DreamsOn several levels, Dum Dum Girls second full length Only in Dreams is a great leap forward for a gifted songwriter and an equally gifted band. It's heavy, deeply personal stuff and surely unprecedented for this style of music. The first record was basically the first songs I'd ever written, says band-leader Dee Dee, and I was thinking nostalgically about being a teenager. This record, it was pretty much impossible not to write about very recent, very real things.
Very real things indeed: Dee Dee wrote Hold Your Hand immediately after her mother (the pretty lady on the cover of both the Dum Dum Girls' self-titled 2009 debut EP and their 2010 debut album I Will Be) was diagnosed with what turned out to be a fatal illness, and it's one of several songs on Only in Dreams that unsparingly trace her mom's passing. Other songs spell out the emotional toll of separation from one's lover, something Dee Dee had to deal with while she and her husband (Brandon Welchez of the acclaimed noise-pop band Crocodiles) pursued their own tour schedules.
Only in Dreams more than fulfills the promise of 2011s acclaimed and fast-selling He Gets Me High EP. It retains Dum Dum Girls' signature blend of the girl-gang eyeliner punk of the Shangri-Las, the trashy propulsion of the Cramps, and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star, but for the first time, all four Dum Dum Girls play and sing on the album. Now the harmonies have more depth, Jules plays her own distinctive guitar leads, and the Bambi (bass)/Sandy (drums) rhythm section powers the music like a vintage V-8 engine. Best of all, tons of time on the road, including two massively successful headlining tours, have molded Dum Dum Girls into a very formidable rock & roll band, giving the music an undeniable force.
And now that power and glory is showcased by full-on studio production, while I Will Be was recorded at home and modestly spiffed up in a studio by legendary pop maestro Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's), Only in Dreams was recorded at Josh Homme's Pink Duck Studios, and Gottehrer again produced, this time with Sune Rose Wagner from the Raveonettes.
Only in Dreams represents a musical evolution for Dum Dum Girls and a personal one for Dee Dee, and that's no coincidence. I'm for real, she says. We all are. They just didnt expect it all to happen in such a dramatic fashion. Its this addition that brings a softer, more melodic touch to their fuzzed out sound. If Friends For Now yields comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, In Between lends itself more to the Mazzy Star and Slowdive end of the spectrum, and one need not look any further than lead single Four Hours (Away). Its gentle swing and sullen vocal sweep will melt hearts and help pass those cold and dark hours.
To spotlight how the band has made peace with the past year, check out Runner, which will put a bounce in your step, while Dead Flowers has the Young Prisms stepping on their pedals harder than ever. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Angus Soundtrack, SRCvinyl is bringing it to vinyl for the first time ever! The album has been mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray at Coherent Studios and is pressed on limited edition 180 gram vinyl.
The film's soundtrack accurately reflects the melodic ideas prevalent in the alternative rock scene at the time. Most of the bands perform songs that closely resonate with the themes of the film while keeping a fast yet upbeat tone, a sharp departure from the age of grunge, which had just reached its twilight. (It should be noted that Angus' penchant for flannel and denim, as well as his defeatist persona, are concepts more closely associated with grunge.) However, several key songs are absent in the CD that was released, most notably ''Fade into You'' by Mazzy Star, the song that was played as Angus and Melissa danced, and ''Rubella'' by the Smoking Popes.
Weezer's initial offering, a song entitled ''Wanda (You're My Only Love)'' (or sometimes just ''Wanda''), was written specifically for the movie but rejected for being ''too much of a strict interpretation of the movie'' and for not sounding enough like what was expected of Weezer at the time. The previously written, more uptempo ''You Gave Your Love to Me Softly'' was used instead, and the rejection of the former song was known to have hurt Weezer's singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo at the time. Though Weezer never properly recorded ''Wanda'', Cuomo released his 1994 demo of the song (along with the story of the song's submission and rejection) in 2007 on the albumAlone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo.
The unique version of ''Am I Wrong'' by Love Spit Love, mixing marching band horns into the original version of the song which interplay well with Richard Butler's raw vocals.
Green Day contributed ''J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)'', a song written by bassist Mike Dirnt about his friend who died in a car accident when he was 19. This song peaked at number one on the Modern Rock Billboard charts of 1995. This song was later released on their 2001 greatest hits album, International Superhits. Meanwhile, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong co-produced ''Back to You'' by the Riverdales with producer Mass Giorgini, which was featured during the dance sequence at the high prom in the film.
The music supervisors for Angus were Elliot Cahn and Jeff Saltzman, who, at the time, also managed two of the soundtrack's artists: Green Day and The Muffs.

Though never commercially successful, Paisley Underground darlings the Dream Syndicate were critically acclaimed and held up their version of neo-psychedelic rock n' roll through the vapid MTV-dominated synth years of the 1980s. Influenced by the Velvet Underground, Neil Young and Television, the Syndicate led by vocalist, guitarist and band leader, Steve Wynn, formed the original version of the band with guitarist Karl Precoda in 1982 after moving back to Los Angeles. Drummer Dennis Duck, who played in the Pasadena band, Human Hands, joined the Syndicate and suggested the band's name in reference to Tony Conrad's early 1960s NY experimental ensemble that included John Cale.
The band performed their first live show at Club Lingerie in Hollywood on Feb 23, 1982, and later signed to Slash Records' subsidiary, Ruby Records,releasing their enigmatic and best-known album, The Days of Wine and Roses. After a brief hiatus in the latter 1980s, Wynn, Duck and bassist Mark Walton joined with guitarist Paul Cutler who had produced the band's very first EP. By 1988, the band was on Enigma Records and began a relationship with producer Elliott Mazer, who produced Neil Young's Time Fades Away. Mazer produced Live at Raji's which showcased the band's long, feedback soaked improvisations and even though it was released AFTER the Mazer-produced studio album, Ghost Stories, it was recorded prior to that on Jan 31, 1988, at Raji's in Hollywood; not 1989 as originally listed on the album upon release.

It's AliveSeattle's La Luz recorded their debut EP, Damp Face, in a small trailer on a hot August day. But barring the inevitable "no-AC-in-the-van" summer tour calamity, La Luz runs cool. Their brand of coolness isn't about distance or affect; it's a mood, and-sue me, but I'm about to totally rip off Zelda Fitzgerald: Something about this music vibrates to the dusky, dreamy smell of dying moons and shadows. So yeah, that kind of cool.
Still, La Luz's live shows, more than most these days, are about connection. It's evident that the four ridiculously talented ladies on stage are not only playing music with each other, but for each other. And they engage their audience as well. Like a proper punk band-which they are not- they give you shit for not dancing. They convey a gritty self-possession, a sense that they've been there and back again. And, like the expert, but seemingly effortless, surf licks and meandering bass lines that rise and fall throughout their songs, their mocking is playful and dreamy and disarming enough to get most of the crowd (and sometimes the keyboard player) dancing down the center line of a soul train.
But as any half-assed Freudian will tell you, there can be no meaningful connection without first weathering some dark and lonely times. Here comes the chilly part: What makes La Luz stand out-and stand out fast-the band has only been playing together for a year and people took notice almost immediately-is that this is a band that embodies that most elusive slant on the human condition: longing, and the fleeting relief that tags alongside deep desire.
In Spanish, La Luz means "light" and that's the perfect thing to evoke when your songs give the illusion of veering in the opposite direction. But lift out most any lyric-which is a good excuse to give a closer listen to the delicate, four-part harmonies that are fast becoming the band's signature-and you'll find that the aches and pains of love and loss, of living in a world where no foothold is ever a promise-all this is delivered with a nuanced dose of perfectly timed exhilaration, like the whole thing might just be worth it in the end.
Last spring, La Luz returned to that steamy trailer park to record It's Alive - the much-anticipated follow up to Damp Face - with their friend and engineer Johnny Goss. From the first get-psyched drum roll and eerie chords of "Sure As Spring", the dinged-up pop gem that opens the album, the rest moves like a slow drive on a dangerous road, slinking and bending as the terrain shifts. On "What Good Am I?", the lead vocals, and the swirl of harmonies that surround it, recall the Spartan haze of Mazzy Star's misty-eyed super hit. Smack in the middle is the title track. "It's Alive" is a jangly rocker with a spooky refrain, oodles of ooohs, and a marauding narrative that nails down the misty logic of the rest of the album. Two instrumentals, "Sunstroke" and "Phantom Feelings", showcase the band's beach jam surf chops, and fall perfectly between the chilled out heartache that surrounds them.
Imagine all of the Shangri-La's trying, precariously, to balance on top of Link Wray's surfboard.
The kind of sweet surf rock with a touch of melancholy that should be the soundtrack to the slow-dancing-at-prom scene in every teen movie.
