    The Manfred Mann Album

Manfred Mann's 1964 U.S. debut The Manfred Mann Album is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the British Invasion, and it's easy to hear why. With the catchy smash single Do Wah Diddy Diddy alongside powerful readings of classics by Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Ike and Tina Turner, it's a transcendent meeting of pop infectiousness and R&B grit that sets the stage for the musical achievements that the band would soon begin to rack up.

My Little Red Book Of Winners

1965's punningly titled My Little Red Book of Winners is one of Manfred Mann's most eclectic efforts, with the band stretching out into more sophisticated musical territory on My Little Red Book, their historic collaboration with Burt Bacharach. They also deliver memorable original compositions like the autobiographical The One in the Middle, and indelible readings of classic tunes by Bob Dylan, the Coasters and Maxine Brown.

    Nightingales & Bombers (Awaiting Repress)

The album that was Manfred Mann's commercial breakthrough was a departure from the previous albums made with the Earth Band. Though the personnel are the same and the musicianship is as mind-blowing as ever, the songs are shorter and punchier, in some cases more poppy. This is not to say that the band had sacrificed a bit of ingenuity or complexity, but the long jams are gone in favor of briefer sound portraits. Nightingales and Bombers included Manfred Mann's first cover of a Bruce Springsteen song, the album-opening Spirits in the Night, a single that charted, and became one of the only pieces written in 10/4 time ever to do so. It would prove to be an important move in their recording career, as 1976's Roaring Silence earned them a big hit with Springsteen's Blinded by the Light. Another foreshadowing of that tune can be detected in the track Fat Nelly, which includes a synthesizer part almost identical to the intro of the aforementioned hit. Also featured in Nightingales and Bombers are such synth-driven rockers as Crossfade, Countdown, and the title track, in which Manfred Mann appear to be trying to capture the prog rock crown. Nightingales and Bombers featured in almost every Best of the Year list for 1975.

    The Good Earth

Another piece of topical hard rock from Manfred Mann's Earth Band and, as before, listenable even to those without a serious bone in their bodies, by virtue of the playing. Moving between hard rock and British blues influences (with a special debt to Cream on the opening cut, Give Me the Good Earth) and progressive rock, the quartet cuts a mean swathe across the sonic landscape, between Mick Rogers' soaring guitar solos and Manfred Mann's inimitable synthesizer work. When these guys start reaching, as on Earth Hymn, that's when their best musical instincts take hold, and the results are always worth hearing. There's stuff here that King Crimson or Be Bop Deluxe wouldn't have been ashamed to have had on any of their albums; indeed, the instrumental Sky High is worth the price of admission by itself as a showcase for the talents of all four players as both hard rock musicians and an art rock ensemble. They even manage to work in elements of folk-rock, and its attendant lyricism, on the album, by way of the Christopher Logue-based Be Not Too Hard (which was also recorded, in a different adaptation, by Joan Baez about seven years earlier). And Earth Hymn, Pt. 2 closes out the album in grand style, once again pushing the band to the edge of their unique brand of progressive/hard rock.

While 2 Live Crew are certainly associated with a moment in time, Luke and company's body of work is surprisingly deep. More a re-examination of their entire career than a bookend to its first part, GREATEST HITS Volume 2 contains both the Miami bass troupe's top 40 hits, the signature track Me So Horny, and the biography of its aftermath Banned in the U.S. A. This collection digs further into the 2 Live Crew catalog, which includes minor hits such as the Manfred Mann sampling Do Wah Diddy and the Clinton Scandal reworking of the act's biggest hit, Bill So Horny, a true timepiece.

Late in 1976, Manfred Mann's Earth Band toured the States with a new line-up that had Chris Thompson (Guitar/Vocals) and Dave Flett (Lead Guitar) replacing Mick Rogers. The album that followed the tour was a worldwide hit with large thanks due to the success of their version of the Springsteen song, Blinded By The Light. Solar Fire (Awaiting Repress)

After riding the worldwide pop music charts for over a decade, Manfred Mann created an even larger chapter in rock music history with his Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Created at the height of album rock radio, Manfred Mann's Earth Band landed their first three albums on the charts as they increased their loyal following throughout concert halls in the United States. 1974 proved to be a pivotal year for the band as they released their biggest selling album at that time with Solar Fire.

Aside from the thematic approach of rocking tracks like the title song Solar Fire and In The Beginning, Darkness, this album really gained a whole new audience with the epic Bob Dylan remake of Father Of Day, Father Of Night. This ten-minute anthem would go on to be one of Mann's most respected and most articulate works of this era. The fans dug it and have gone on to make this album one of their most enduring of the Manfred Mann's Earth Band diverse catalog.

    Chance

Manfred Mann's 1980 album is a strange mix of topical songwriting, progressive rock, and power pop -- from its opening seconds, the Earth Band is pressing serious messages and social commentary on their listenership amid swirling prog rock keyboards and catchy guitar hooks and choruses. The whole package is challenging in ways that should have put them on the cutting edge of rock music at the outset of that decade, but one suspects that Mann and company were too musically adept and sophisticated for their own good -- a little dumbing down and maybe a little less musicianship on display would have made them more accessible to the coming MTV generation. As it is, the album has held up remarkably well across a quarter century, however, even if it now seems an uncomfortably accurate warning of the way the world would go, in terms of politics and society, in the decades to come. It would also be three years before another Earth Band album was forthcoming, and that one would be steeped in world music sounds.

Kieran Hebden's contribution to our renowned series of compilations redefines the word eclectic". Fresh Cream is the first album by Cream, released in 1966. Laid down at the height of the UK blues boom, Fresh Cream covers the kind of territory you might expect from three of the most respected players on the scene at the time. With Clapton fresh just from his time with John Mayall, Ginger Baker leaving behind the R'n'B backwaters of Graham Bond Organisation, and a woefully under-employed Jack Bruce hightailing it from the increasingly pop-leaning Manfred Mann, the electric blues was their natural turf.

Highlights include the racing harmonica work-out, and the call and response excitements on Muddy Waters' "Rollin' and Tumblin'", a spine-tingled vocal on the Willie Dixon classic, "Spoonful", as well as the self-penned "Sleepy Time Time" which gives Clapton a free hand to wake up all and sundry. The traditional standard, Cat's Squirrel is given a rousing treatment, showing how well these players meshed.

    Self Portrait

One of the most controversial albums in Bob Dylan's remarkable catalog, the 1970 double-LP Self Portrait continues to exercise considerable fascination amongst Dylan devotees. Released on the heels of the artist's game changing Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait offered a quirky assortment of studio and live tracks, encompassing Dylan originals as well as covers of familiar pop and folk numbers, recorded with an all-star musical cast.

At the time of its original release, the sprawling, unconventional Self Portrait generated an immense amount of discussion and disagreement amonst Dylan admirers. The ongoing controversy surrounding the album has been fueled over the years by Dylan himself. At various times, Dylan has defended Self Portrait as a heartfelt artistic statement, dismissed it as a joke and described it as a concerted effort to escape the pressures of his unwanted status as the voice of a generation. Whatever the artist's actual intentions, Self Portrait retains a unique niche in the hearts of Dylan fans, and is often cited as an early landmark in the birth of alternative country.

Self Portrait's highlights include the Dylan originals Wigwam, later featured in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums; Living the Blues, subsequently covered by artists ranging from Leon Redbone to Antony Hegarty; and The Mighty Quinn, which Manfred Mann had turned into a British Invasion hit in 1968. The latter song is one of a quartet of live tracks drawn from Dylan's legendary performances with The Band at the historic Isle of Wight festival, along with memorable versions of the Dylan standards Like a Rolling Stone, Minstrel Boy and She Belongs to Me. Also featured are Dylan's readings of a variety of outside material, ranging from his iconic interpretation of the rural folk song Copper Kettle to his distinctive takes on such familiar tunes as Paul Simon's The Boxer, Gordon Lightfoot's Early Mornin' Rain and the vintage Every Brothers hits Let It Be Me and Take a Message to Mary.

Sundazed has restored this one-of-a-kind release to its original double-LP format. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, the album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, with meticulously reproduced original gatefold cover art.
