    50 Song Memoir

Nonesuch Records releases the Magnetic Fields' 50 Song Memoir. The five-LP set chronicles the 50 years of songwriter Stephin Merritt's life with one song per year; it was produced by Stephin Merritt with additional production by Thomas Bartlett and Charles Newman. 50 Song Memoir five-LP edition includes an extensive interview by Daniel Handler and facsimile handwritten lyrics by Merritt, and as a standalone bound book.

Merritt began recording on his 50th birthday: February 9, 2015. Unlike his previous work, the lyrics on 50 Song Memoir are nonfiction-in Merritt's words, "a mix of autobiography (bedbugs, Buddhism, buggery) and documentary (hippies, Hollywood, hyperacusis)." As he says in the album's liner note interview with his friend, the author Daniel Handler, "I am the least autobiographical person you are likely to meet. I will probably not write any more true songs after this than I did before, but it's been interesting working on it."

In addition to his vocals on all 50 songs, Merritt plays more than 100 instruments on 50 Song Memoir, ranging from ukulele to piano to drum machine to abacus.

Bob's Burgers premiered on the Fox network January 2011, and quickly became one of the most watched series on television. After enjoying the highest-rated new season premiere of the 2010-11 season, Bob's Burgers quickly settled into an average viewership of over 4 million per episode. The show has won an Emmy award and been nominated five times, including a current nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. It has inspired many popular spinoff items, including a recent, best-selling cookbook. With the seventh season set to premiere this fall, Bob's Burgers' cultural influence only grows.

Now comes The Bob's Burgers Music Album, featuring 107 songs from the first 107 episodes (all six existing seasons), plus five special cover versions of songs from the show. Originally broadcast within the episodes - and often in abbreviated form - these songs appear here in their freestanding glory for the first time.

    • The album features the main cast members - Bob (Jon Benjamin) and Linda (John Roberts) and their children Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman) and Louise (Kristen Schaal) - singing original songs that build on the show's unique sense of humor.

    • Also featured are many of the show's recurring and special guests, from comedians like Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Kline, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Zack Galifianakis, and Fred Armisen, to musical guests Cyndi Lauper and Carly Simon.

    • Includes five never-aired "Bob's Buskers" cover versions of songs from the show performed by St. Vincent, the National, Lapsley, and Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields.

    Holiday

Stephin Merritt has claimed that each of the first four Magnetic Fields albums has a specific and unique musical style. It is telling that Holiday shares its name with Madonna's first major hit single, because the musical style on display here is early-'80s-style synth-dance-pop. Of course, in 1994, at the pinnacle of the post-grunge alternative era, few musics could have been more resolutely unfashionable. There's no doubt that the ever-contrary Merritt had this in mind all along. In keeping with the escapist title and lighthearted music, Merritt's lyrics only occasionally-and then only lightly-touch upon his usual world-weary cynicism, as on the mournful Deep Sea Diving Suit. Merritt pursues a more romantic path for most Holiday, crooning the swooning Take Ecstasy With Me and Strange Powers with an uncharacteristic lightness of spirit. Chances are that it is all deeply ironic and bitter, but at least on the surface, Holiday is sheer delight.

Love At The Bottom Of The Sea

The Magnetic Fields return to the signature mix of synth and acoustic sounds they established in the 90s with Merge releases such as The Charm of the Highway Strip and Get Lost. Stephin Merritt has come back to synths with a fresh approach: Most of the synthesizers on the record didn't exist when we were last using synthesizers, he notes. The songs - none over three minutes long - were recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York with Merritt's usual cast of collaborators: Claudia Gonson, Sam Davol, John Woo, Shirley Simms, Johny Blood and Daniel Handler.

    Field Of Reeds

With their risky third album, These New Puritans abandoned the angular dance-punk of Beat Pyramid and the gloomy electronic beats of Hidden to reinvent themselves once again for Field of Reeds, a record as indebted to classical scores and avant-garde jazz as rock. Taking a hands-off, live approach to the recording process, and allowing open space and emptiness to take precedence over beats, the music has a disturbing, dystopian feel to it, swinging from detached to nightmarish before resolving into something lovingly tranquil. Some of the best songs, like Fragment 2, V (Island Song), and Spiral (which sounds like a fever-dream version of Björk and Thom Yorke's I've Seen It All duet from the Dancer in the Dark soundtrack), thrive in this push and pull between atonal dissonance and sheer beauty. Even These New Puritans' most stark numbers, while often lacking a concrete backbeat or definitive structure, are bursting with details and ideas. Ambient textures, constructed from melancholic horns and eerie analog synthesizer tones, add a wavering undercurrent that is often hair-raising and haunting. The production is equally unconventional. After writing the material in Essex and Amsterdam, Jack Barnett fleshed out the parts with his brother George and Tom Hein before recording in London, Gloucester, and Berlin with new honey-voiced Portuguese singer Elisa Rodrigues, utilizing an unusual magnetic resonator piano and meticulously detailing the songs with field recordings, including breaking glass and the screaming of an actual hawk. This perfectionism, present in the sonics and in the complex arrangements, makes Field of Reeds the most challenging title in their catalog and also the most groundbreaking.

The Wayward Bus / Distant Plastic Trees

The Magnetic Fields' first two albums, The Wayward Bus and Distant Plastic Trees, make their debut appearance here on vinyl, packaged together as a two-LP set.

Distant Plastic Trees was originally released in England and Japan in 1991. The album includes the early-'90s college radio single "100,000 Fireflies" which had earlier appeared as a single on Harriet Records and was later covered by Superchunk.

For its domestic debut, Distant Plastic Trees was paired with the Magnetic Fields' 1992 album The Wayward Bus on a single CD that came out on the band's own PoPuP Records imprint before its re-release on Merge in 1994. While both albums feature singer Susan Anway (formerly of early-'80s Boston punk band V;), the latter introduced several new players who would subsequently make regular appearances on Merritt's various musical projects. "With the 1991 debut album Distant Plastic Trees, the Magnetic Fields' composer and frontman Stephin Merritt introduced the first incarnation of the Magnetic Fields. On this album, deadpan vocalist Susan Anway sings lyrics of heartbreak and surrealism over a bed of inscrutable instruments played and programmed by Merritt," Handler explains. "The second album, The Wayward Bus, adds cellist Sam Davol, tuba player Johny Blood and percussionist Claudia Gonson to create a plinky, orchestral sound in tribute to pop producer Phil Spector and his 'Wall of Sound.'"

The album artwork on both Distant Plastic Trees and The Wayward Bus was created by watercolorist Wendy Smith, who had also painted album covers for the Rough Trade band Weekend (a musical project from members of Young Marble Giants). Her beautiful wrap-around paintings, now printed in a larger format, along with remastered audio make this two-LP set an exciting addition to the Magnetic Fields discography

When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog

Call it a curse: Jens Lekman's world is populated by an endless stream of women. There he is, his hair mussed and glasses off-kilter, sitting in the corner of the cafe with his journal once again - and he's being torn in two. Moments ago he fell in love with the redheaded barista who nailed his order - when she scooted that cappuccino across the counter, it was clear that there was a connection. And now, his eye catches the picture of divinity in the shape of the most finely featured brunette he's ever seen...and she's looking his way. But which way to go? It's tragic having to make such choices. Like Fellini's The Man Who Loved Women, Jens Lekman is a man forever at a crossroads between competing inspirations.

At only 23, Lekman has deservedly been the center of much hype in Scandinavia. Having made a name for himself performing under the name Rocky Dennis, he recently hit #2 on the Swedish National Pop Charts. Most everyone who's heard him believes him to be the next great pop star emerging from the streets of the DIY underground. With an angelic voice and golden ears he seems to be drinking from the same hard waters as The Carpenters, Harry Nilsson, The Magnetic Fields, Runt-era Todd Rundgren, Bill Callahan's Smog, The Modern Lovers, Rufus Wainwright and Belle & Sebastian.

    Policy

Will Butler has been a member of the band Arcade Fire for over 10 years.
This is his first release under his own name.

Policy is American music-in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, The
Breeders, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, The Magnetic
Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts).
Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world.

Policy was recorded in one week in Jimi Hendrix's old living room
(upstairs at Electric Lady Studios). Jeremy Gara played drums; other
musicians contributed woodwinds and backing vocals. Most everything else
    was played by Will.

The song structures are traditional; the arrangements are clean. The music is
experimental only in that it attacks consistency as a requirement for sincerity.
The songs are angry, loving, joking, tired, honest, idiotic. They clash against
each other but also fit and work together-as if a blind watchmaker made a
Frankenstein watch that came alive and told extremely accurate time while
having conflicting feelings about its creator. No, about creation itself. But
then the watch makes friends with a talking rat, and they go on hilarious
adventures until it turns out that the rat was dead the whole time. With a
really good credits song-I mean, the whole soundtrack is excellent. You
    should check it out.

    Yours truly,

    Memphis Slim

    I Blame Society

Third album from New York trio The Ballet. Unashamedly sissy and explicitly queer, The Ballet marry the DIY queer ethos of the Hidden Cameras with the wry poeticism of The Magnetic Fields to create literate, infectious pop gems. Goldberg draws from an array of pop artists and periods, from 60's bubblegum to 80's synthpop and 90's indiepop, fusing these in sophisticated and novel ways . Avoiding autobiographical or confessional modes, Goldberg nonetheless mines his own psychological constitution and intellectual interests to craft songs whose overt musical prettiness is often contrasted by a dark and complex subtext.

    Obscurities

Includes Five Previously Unreleased Tracks by Stephin Merritt

    Limited to 2000 Copies

Obscurities is a collection of Stephin Merritts (The Magnetic Fields) hard-to-find recordings dating back to his time on Merge (19941999) and prior. The 14 tracks on Obscurities, including five previously unreleased songs, were recorded prior to the release of The Magnetic Fields seminal album 69 Love Songs, which established Merritt as one of this generations most talented songwriters. Three of the unreleased tracks hail from The Song from Venus, the unfinished science fiction musical written by Merritt and Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket. Also included are four songs culled from various Merge-era 7 vinyl singles by The Magnetic Fields; two from The 6ths, Merritts guest vocalist-laden side project; one from an audio book; one from the Oh, Merge compilation CD; and a track from a rare K Records cassette-only release.

Among the tracks on Obscurities is The Song from Venus Forever and a Day, a solo-acoustic ukulele-based love song reminiscent of 69 Love Songs The Book of Love. Also included on Obscurities is The Sun and the Sea and the Sky, a previously unreleased 69 Love Songs outtake. Merritt points out: This song didnt go on 69 Love Songs because it wasnt actually about romantic love. The album concludes with You Are Not My Mother and I Want to Go Home, which originally appeared in the audio book version of Neil Gaimans Coraline, for which Merritt composed the soundtrack.

How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL

Gospel Music's debut full-length album, How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL finds Owen Holmes picking up where he left off with his acclaimed 2010 EP Duettes, a five-song collection of charming duets with members of Camera Obscura, Vivian Girls, The Magnetic Fields, Hefner and French singer/songwriter SoKo. Using a musical arsenal of toy piano, banjo, acoustic guitar, organ, ukulele, bass and drums, Holmes casually delivers 11 stories with a conversational baritone reminiscent of David Berman and Adam Green. Jacksonville pal Madeline Long acts as the perfect foil to Holmes here, adding a sweet, girlish counterpoint to his deep register. Recorded in Jacksonville and mixed in New York with engineer Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields).

... demagnetizing an LP definitively removed a high-frequency glaze or glare and seemed to enrich the midband... Demagnetizing LPs works. And do not try one of these devices unless you're prepared to buy it.

    - Michael Fremer, Stereophile

LP Record, DISC and Cable Demagnetizer 110VAC

The Furutech DeMag completely demagnetizes LPs and optical disc media such as CD, CD-R, DVD, MD, Game CD, Photo CD, SACD, and DVD Audio. Plus it's an indispensable accessory for keeping interconnect cables, connectors and power cords demagnetized to prevent magnetic signal distortion. Demagnetization isn't Just For Optical Media Anymore! One year factory Warranty. The deMag works for disc media as well as cables, connectors, and power cords! No part of the playback chain should be disturbed by resolution-sapping magnetic interference. Demagnetizing LPs How can an LP be magnetized? It's plastic! The fact is that pigment added to the plastic during the manufacturing process is the culprit. The minute amount of ferrous material in the pigment causes LPs to become magnetized. Testing at the Tokyo Nanotechnology center with a IHI Gauss meter showed that after an LP was treated with the deMag the magnetic field of the LP was lowered from 620~630 nT to 572~582 nT (nanotesla: a unit of magnetic field strength,1 Tesla = 10,000 gauss) Demagnetizing Cables Electric current generates a magnetic field as it flows through a power cord or conductor. However, magnetic impurities within the materials themselves become magnetized and introduce further magnetic distortion. Just loop your cables and power cords with their connectors on the deMag and begin treatment. No matter how valuable or expensive your system is, the only way to achieve top performance is by demagnetizing your problems away! There are no other demagnetizers on the market that can be used in such a versatile and effective way. The deMag Demagnetizer can even be used on metal-based accessories like CD stabilizers or speaker terminals.

Whine of the Mystic (Awaiting Repress)

Nova Scotia's Nap Eyes is the greatest band you've never heard, and Whine of the Mystic is their first full-length album, a brilliant small-batch brew of crooked, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs, it's equal parts shambling and sophisticated, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth's magnetic field coexist easily with songs about insomnia and drinking too much. Nap Eyes' keen sonic signature cruises briskly and beautifully along the dog-eared axes of jangle-jaded Oceanic pop music (The Clean, The Verlaines, The Go-Betweens), and through the backpages of Peter Perrett (The Only Ones, England's Glory), via all things Lou Reed and Modern Lovers, without ever sounding very much like anything else happening today.

    Breakers

Somerville, Massachusetts' soft-focus pop group Gem Club features Christopher Barnes and his collaborators, cellist Kristen Drymala and vocalist Ieva Berberian. Together, they create cavernous-sounding piano-based ballads that, despite their earthly trappings, feel truly ethereal, as if they're being piped in from another planet bereft of gravity. Gem Club buries vague but revealing lyrics in delicate, sometimes somber, sometimes lighthearted melodies. There is a balance between pain and hope, a sense of growth and catharsis spawned from harder days, all complemented by the breathy vocals and symphonic instrumentation. Following their self-released six-song EP, Acid and Everything, Gem Club have made Breakers, their debut full-length album to be released via Hardly Art. Charisma V2 MM Cartridge

As Clearaudio continue to advance standards in our range of moving coil (MC) cartridges, we felt it was equally time to turn our attention to the moving magnet (MM) range and to make a new statement.

From the concept V2 to the Maestro V2, our MM cartridges have long been at the forefront of the moving magnet field and have proved popular among music lovers for their distinctive high quality.

The Charisma V2 is the new flagship of the Clearaudio MM cartridge range.

Only the finest materials qualified for inclusion, including the same diamond-coated Boron cantilever found in our world-leading Goldfinger Statement MC cartridge.

The use of highly efficient magnets gives the dynamic Charisma V2 an almost record-breaking output, easily enough to amply drive less sensitive phono stages. The double-polished diamond stylus is mounted on the cantilever with matchless precision, ensuring excellent frequency response and the highest channel separation.

The cartridge body is made from the finest ebony wood and is set with a precious metal-bearing inlay.

The result? A quality of sound that, until now, seemed unachievable from MM cartridges. Utterly charismatic.

SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER+/PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER (PSC+/PSC) CONDUCTORS: Aspen uses a carefully finessed combination of high-purity Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC), and extreme high-purity Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) conductors in a Self-Shielding Double Counter-Spiral HyperLitz design. Solid conductors prevent strand interaction, a major source of distortion. Surface quality is critical because a conductor can be considered as a rail-guide for both the electric fields within a conductor, and for the magnetic fields outside the conductor. The astonishingly smooth and pure Perfect-Surface nearly eliminates harshness and greatly increases clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N and other coppers. The superior purity of PSC+ further minimizes distortion caused by grain boundaries, which exist within any metal conductor.

DIELECTRIC-BIAS SYSTEM (DBS, US PAT #S 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1): Insulation is an electrical barrier, and also a "dielectric" because it is inside the conductor's magnetic field. All insulation slows down and smears the signal inside. When insulation is unbiased, it causes different amounts of delay for different frequencies and energy levels, a real problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest's DBS creates a strong, stable electrostatic field which saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. Saturated (full) insulation absorbs less and therefore releases less out-of-phase energy. Minimizing nonlinear time delays results in clearer sound emerging from a "blacker" background. The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

DOUBLE COUNTER-SPIRAL GEOMETRY: Aspen and the other AQ "Tree" Series cables have an inner circular array of positive conductors spiraling in one direction. Around this inner group, the negative conductors spiral in the opposite direction, which makes possible the significant performance advantage of the positive and negative conductors crossing each other instead of being parallel. However, the critical need for positive and negative to have a fixed non-changing relationship is ensured as the negative and positive groups are in fact two tubes with a perfectly consistent relationship. The result is an astonishing clarity, like focusing a camera lens you had no idea was so far out of focus.

CARBON-BASED NOISE-DISSIPATION AND CROSSTALK-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (INSULATION): The negative conductors in Aspen are covered with partially conductive Carbon-Loaded Polyethylene. This remarkable material damps radio-frequency garbage from being fed back into the amplifier. The sonic benefit is exactly the same reduction in "hash" and improved dimensionality that comes whenever RF interference is reduced in an audio circuit. Another carbon layer also damps interaction between positive and negative conductors, and an external 3-layer carbon-based NDS System additionally absorbs external interference.

SPREAD-SPECTRUM TECHNOLOGY (SST): Any single size or shape of conductor has a specific distortion profile. Even though radially symmetrical conductors (solid or tubular) have the fewest discontinuities, any particular size still has a sonic signature. SST is a method for significantly reducing the awareness of these character flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors. The different SST-determined conductor sizes used in Aspen allow an exceptionally clear, clean and dynamic sound.

RIP Gibraltar, long live Castle Rock! Like Gibraltar before it, Castle Rock is designed as an
extremely high-performance cable which provides true Double-BiWire performance in a single
attractive cable. Original Gibraltar's all important basics - superior geometry, magnetic
autonomy of each quad-conductor section, Perfect-Surface metal technology, conductor-size
optimization (AQ's Spread-Spectrum Technology), etc. - are the fundamentals of Castle Rock.
Castle Rock employs AQ's best copper conductor metal (Perfect-Surface Copper+),
AudioQuest's DBS (Dielectric-Bias System) and NDS (Noise-Dissipation System).

A very recent advancement featured in Castle Rock (and all other Tree and Rock Series speaker
cables) is the addition of the sleek new Hanging Silver 1000 Series Multi-Spades and Bananas.
Originally developed for the WEL Signature Series speaker cables, these plugs are made using a
Hanging Silver over pure Red Copper process in which the spades and bananas are submerged
("hung") into a vat of extreme-purity silver, resulting in a very thick direct-silver plate. No
intermediary performance-degrading materials (such as nickel or alloy) are used.

Also new to Castle Rock is a more-neatly-sculpted "breakout" (the covering where the cable
separates into red and black legs), which is now made of a synthetic non-magnetic polymer,
rather than metal. We're making this all-models upgrade because speaker cables and AC power
cables carry large magnetic fields which interact with any metal "collar" around the cable.
Eliminating metal in the breakouts is another significant (and clearly audible) step forward in our
goal of eliminating distortion and making the cable sonically invisible.

Castle Rock represents the culmination of Gibraltar's long-term evolution along with
performance-enhancing new systems and materials. These ingredients add up to important
audible improvements and more pleasurable listening!
