Maggot Brain is the third studio album by the American funk band Funkadelic, released in 1971 on Westbound Records. It was the last album that featured the original Funkadelic lineup; shortly after Maggot Brain was recorded, Tawl Ross, Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood left the band for various reasons. The album incorporates musical elements of psychedelia, rock, gospel, and soul music, with significant variation between each track. Pitchfork Media named it the seventeenth best album of the 1970s.

Limited Edition Of 1,000 Chocofunkalatte Colored Vinyl In A Deluxe Classic Style Gatefold Sleeve

1971's Maggot Brain is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, or vision, to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are book ended by two of the heaviest tracks (Maggot Brain and Wars Of Armageddon) ever committed to tape. The title track, and album opener, is nothing short of mind-blowing, Eddie Hazel's guitar is a revolution brought on by Clinton asking him to play "as if your mother just died". An essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic camp.

Maggot Brain, released in 1971, is Funkadelic's all-out masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, vision and, let's be honest, sheer lunacy to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Cosmic Slop

    Import

UK only vinyl pressing! With each successive release, Funkadelic was streamlining its sound, a process culminating in such early '70s classics as Cosmic Slop. The group's acid rock-heavy early work had metamorphosed into straight-up, party hearty funk, with lyrics that alternate between the serious (the title track) and the humorous 'No Compute'. It may not be as awe-inspiring as their masterpiece, Maggot Brain, but, more than any other Funkadelic album, Cosmic Slop stresses the importance of the almighty groove. The album opens with one of Funkadelic's funkiest tracks ever, the largely instrumental 'Nappy Dugout'. It's clear from the start that Funkadelic, despite a revolving cast of characters, is one of the tightest bands around.

No 2: Abyss In B Minor (Discontinued) (On Sale)

In this age, given the ease of bedroom recording, records like this one arenÆt made very often. But this is no distended double-album; it may open with the eight-minute groove of Ayisha Abyss, which sounds like a caffeinated Can or something from FunkadelicÆs Maggot Brain, but the whole album is so concise, so perfectly realised that itÆs all over in 38 minutes and 45 seconds.

No 2: Abyss In B Minor follows the Norwegian bandÆs self-titled debut on which they toured with everyone from the Dandy Warhols to Nine Inch Nails. S-M mastermind Emile Nikolaisen spent over a year ôin different locations with different people, capturing and gathering moments, failures, sounds.ö Then, with the assistance of the likes of Nick Terry, who has worked with Klaxons and Primal Scream, and Can associate Ren? Tinner, he set about mixing the results.

I Just Want To See Your Face has a terrifying opening section reminiscent of XTRMNTR-era Primal Scream, before turning into an insanely twisted pop song. There are some incredible, memorable melodies in songs such as D.I.W.S.W.T.T.D, but the squalling menace of Reprobate! and Blow Yr Brains In The Morning Rain, the ethereal majesty of Melody For Jaana and the slow-motion nightmare of Honeyjinx are something else entirely.

Jams From The Heart (Out Of Stock)

Eddie Hazel rose to fame in the early '70s as part of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic troupe. An extremely talented and underappreciated guitarist/songwriter, Hazel had no problem nailing down Hendrix-like guitar freakouts (Maggot Brain) or nasty, straight-up funk (Loose Booty, Red Hot Mama). Although drug abuse would hinder his talents (he went to prison in the late '70s and eventually died in 1993 because of it), Hazel still came through when inspired and focused. Although he did release one official solo album in 1977 (Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs), there wasn't much material left behind where the listener could hear Hazel cut loose on guitar due to the Clinton-generated pressure to write a hit single. All of this is solved by the Jams From the Heart EP, which features some of Hazel's greatest playing ever committed to tape. The tracks are from a 1975 studio session, when he was laying down demos for his upcoming solo debut. Quite simply, Hazel rips on guitar. Smedley Smorganoff opens up with Hazel getting the feel for the other musicians, while the near 12-minute Lampoc Boogie is the near-ultimate guitar showcase for him (the above-mentioned Maggot Brain gets top honors). The gut-wrenching ballad From the Bottom of My Heart is another long track, and is the only song on the album to contain vocals. The final selection, the short Unkut Funk, features some great band interplay on a fat groove, which wraps up the EP nicely.
