    album offers Love fans a rare glimpse into a previously undocumented phase of Arthur Lee's fabled career, while shining a light for new fans to discover the unique genius that is the music of Arthur Lee and Love.



    It's tempting to play what-if with Love's lost labor, Black Beauty, which was recorded in 1973 but shelved for nearly four decades. What if Buffalo Records hadn't gone out of business just prior to the album's release? What if Black Beauty had actually hit stores? What if it hadn't languished in limbo until years after Arthur Lee's death? Would it have stopped Love's slide into obscurity? Would it have signaled a comeback for the man who masterminded Forever Changes, still one of the most complex and compelling artifacts of 1960s Los Angeles? Would his life and career have played out any differently? Would we think of him today as something other than a cult artist, inspired as well as damned by his era?


    It's difficult to imagine any answers to those questions, but it says a lot about Lee that the album even raises these what-ifs and coulda-beens. The very qualities that made him such a fascinating voice-- restlessness, excitability, paranoia, perfectionism, single-mindedness-- may have doomed any commercial prospects more than his notorious fear of travel ever did. After recording Forever Changes, he fired the band and hired new musicians to take their places. Every subsequent album featured a different line-up, although the changes seem based more on personality than on musical direction or ability. Never stagnant, Love was in constant flux, always in a state of development but never quite arriving. So the operative question becomes: Was this the version of Love that Lee had been working toward?


    For Black Beauty-- which is finally seeing release via High Moon Records, although the reissue has been delayed for two years-- Lee assembled guitarist Melvan Whittington, bass player Robert Rozelle, and drummer Joe Blocker. This may be the hardiest and most muscular of Love's post-Changes rosters, with remarkable force and range. With crisp production by Paul Rothchild, best known for his work with the Doors, Love build from a potent blues rock foundation not dissimilar to that of Jimi Hendrix, but without the distracting shamanistic persona and guitar pyrotechnics. "Walk Right In" struts into country rock territory, rewriting Cannon's Jug Stompers 1929 hit into a plea for empathy, and "Beep Beep" attempts a sort of pop reggae, albeit not entirely convincingly.


    On the whole, this particular line-up sounds perfectly rough and unrehearsed, generating a tense energy on "Skid" and "Stay Away" even as they suggest a band still figuring out exactly what they can do together. It's a strong album, but it's not another Forever Changes, whose accomplishments in retrospect were unrepeatable, or even another Four Sail. On the other hand, Lee wasn't aiming to craft something in that vein. Still, especially considering the professional setbacks he had faced in the years leading up to Black Beauty-- which includes being dropped by Elektra and shuffling through a series of independent labels-- Lee sounds engaged and invigorated, forgoing the bitterness that had rankled the band for a slightly more hopeful outlook. On stand-out "Can't Find It", he sings, "Every time I cry my heart out, and every time I play the fool, but there's gotta be something in this lonely world for me." The confession is all the more bittersweet for being capped with the line, "but I can't find it without you." It's ostensibly a love song, but could just as easily be addressed to his audience. His creative satisfaction relies on having a listener to complete the circuit, which makes this album's long shelf life all the sadder.

    Black Beauty, Miles Davis At Fillmore West, was recorded on April 10, 1970 at Fillmore West, San Francisco, when Davis performed as the opening act for the Grateful Dead. The recording took place shortly after the release of Miles' classic album Bitches Brew. The album was released in 1973, originally in Japan only.


    Black Beauty, a true jazz-rock album, captured one of Davis' first performances at a rock venue during the early stages of his electric period. At the concert, he led his band (saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Dave Holland, keyboardist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira) through one continuously performed set list.


    The songs in the band's setlist were as followed: Directions, Miles Runs the Voodoo Down, Willie Nelson, I Fall In Love Too Easily, Sanctuary, It's About That Time, Bitches Brew, Masqualero, Spanish Key, and The Theme. They were performed as one continuous and uninterrupted piece of music, a practice Davis had begun in 1967. He later explained in his autobiography that performing these kinds of long musical suites without breaks allowed more space for improvisations in concert.

    When Black Rebel Motorcycle Club released their self titled-debut album in 2001, they immediately made an impact on the music scene. The self-produced debut album was praised as a group's cohesive, solid production overall. The American rock band from San Francisco is influenced by bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Led Zeppelin, The Verve, The Velvet Underground and The Jesus and Mary Chain.


    From the album opener Love Burns to the ultra-fine space pop of Too Real to the track Spread Your Love, which was used in the film A Man Apart and features in the TV show Skins, B.R.M.C. is a very impressive debut. The re-issue of the album contains 4 bonus tracks, which weren't released on the original vinyl version. The fourth side of the 2 LP set contains a beautiful etch.

    King Tuff's new record is called Black Moon Spell.


    It was produced and recorded by Bobby Harlow at Studio B in Los Angeles, California,
    in the hot winter of 2014.


    No one involved was prepared to make a record, but an invisible hand pushed them
    to do it. Perhaps it was God or that special someone we all know and love called The
    Devil.


    God and The Devil actually have very similar interests. They both love electric guitars
    and they both want you to listen to Black Moon Spell and freak the fuck out.


    There were many strange occurrences during the recording session- Dracula landlords,
    flashes of mysterious light, haunted microphones, songs that mixed themselves,
    demonic vortexes swirling in coffee cups, etc.


    Under the Black Moon Spell you may experience euphoria, demented visions, wet
    dreams, bouts of backwards laughter, and dazed confusion resulting in primordial
    dancing.


    Fire played a very important role in the making of this album. King Tuff loves fire.
    For some reason, no one can really explain how the Black Moon Spell came to be.
    It just appeared one day and demanded heavy rock music and meatball subs.
    Backwards messages may be found on this record.


    Los Angeles, full of its screaming coyotes and creeping helicopters, surely slathered
    its sexy, twisted, hairy, polluted spirit all over Black Moon Spell. The Sunset Strip
    shat itself when it heard all these guitar solos.


    Can you feel the Black Moon Spell creeping up the back of yr neck yet?


    King Tuff would prefer not to tell you the full story of making this record because
    its long and crazy and you wouldn't believe him anyway. Also, I am King Tuff.


    Magic Jake, who played bass and is beautiful like sunshine, would like to take this
    moment to give you a hug and invite you to a tanning party on a beach of your choice.


    Old Gary, who plays drums and has the most glorious cackle, would like to take this
    moment to crack a cold one with you and invite you to watch the old ballgame with
    him.


    Old Gary was out watching the old ballgame, so a wild critter named Ty Segall played
    drums on the song "Black Moon Spell". Ty enjoys speaking in a goblin voice in his
    spare time.


    Night fell on Studio B. A Tarot card leapt from the deck and said, "No human
    judgement is of any value here." King Tuff agreed.


    Sub Pop first discovered King Tuff curled up in his palace in Vermont. It was basically
    a shit hut made of moss, mud, and glimmering stones hidden near the graveyard,
    and it was guarded by beautiful wild bullfrogs with silver fangs and baseball bats.


    Punx, Squares, Skaters, Farmers, Bartenders, Grandparents, Stoners, Carpenters,
    Hobos, Heshers, Babes, Babies, Plumbers, Strippers, Art Teachers, Teenagers, Townies,
    Moms, Dads, Truck Drivers, and Witches will all love this record.


    Every song on Black Moon Spell was written without giving a shining fuck about
    nothing.

    sensibility at work here, one that never muffles the drive or

    Precociousness always catches its observer off guard; we are
    witness to a stubborn incongruity, a disproportionate relationship
    between limited years and elevated levels of skill, insight, or
    vision. It confounds common experience, and we wonder. When
    Ortolan's debut album Time On A String was released in 2010,
    three quarters of the family foursome were yet under drinking
    age. Along with copious kudos given to the quality of the music
    and the maturity of the songwriting, every single review made
    mention of their age. Wonder indeed.


    What may be the greater marvel though, is when a nascent talent
    starts to grow into itself; when prodigious promise begins to
    deliver something beyond spectacle, when it begins to nourish
    those who are witness to it. Such is the case with Ortolan's latest,
    Covered In Black.


    The pulse at the heart of Ortolan's music has always been
    Stephanie Cottingham's voice, a curious combination of
    innocence, wisdom, and wit (all rare commodities in the greater
    landscape of popular music today). These beguiling qualities
    remain, but here her voice is imbued with a greater richness. The
    bandwidth of color, hue, and shade has widened; the reds are
    redder and the blues are bluer. Even more significant though, is
    Cottingham's development as an interpreter of her own songs.
    Her voice remains a thing to behold, but in the tradition of Kitty
    Wells, Etta James, or Emmylou Harris, she is becoming a
    storyteller. Each note is now is its own scene in a greater drama.
    Each vocal push and lilt tells of loss and love, fear and
    friendship.


    As much as Ortolan is about Stephanie Cottingham's voice and
    songwriting, it is about family, and the picture is incomplete
    without the powerful presence of Jill (keys), Briana (bass), and
    Lara (drums). Floor toms drum and drive, strumming guitars
    strum and strum faster, basses rock and keyboards swirl and
    swoop. Their commitment to one another is palpable, and is as
    important to the music as the notes and rhythms they're playing.


    That their voices also join Stephanie's throughout the record is
    not insignificant. There is an excess of animosity in the world: so
    much time is spent competing, resisting, debating, conflicting,
    arguing. There is something so vital and humane in joining voices
    for once, in unison. One of the simplest and most powerful
    activities of human beings is singing together, and this is a
    central ingredient to Ortolan's music and life. Nothing is
    pretended-it's what they do: voices are raised and raised
    together -- to cry, to question, to pray, to laugh, to celebrate.


    The color black is achieved through the mixing of different
    paints and opposing pigments; as such, black represents the
    presence of color, not the absence of it, and Ortolan's latest is
    covered in it.

    In celebration of the ten-year anniversary of this iconic album, Jagjaguwar is proud to present the Black Sheep Boy 10th Anniversary Edition, a three-LP set combining the classic Black Sheep Boy album and its counterpart the Black Sheep Boy Appendix with an all new unreleased album entitled There Swims a Swan: full-band recordings made six months prior to the release of Black Sheep Boy which illuminate the album's roots in the traditional American songbook.


    Featuring beautiful, emotional readings of songs popularized by such artists as Washington Phillips, Lead Belly, the Louvin Brothers, and Roscoe Holcomb, There Swims a Swan takes the listener on a trip through the songs that inspired Sheff while composing Black Sheep Boy and reads like a run-through of that album's themes. Black Sheep Boy is celebrated for its album artwork as well as its music, and the Anniversary Edition collects that artwork in a meticulously reworked package, combining every previous element of William Schaff's imagery with a large new piece by Schaff depicting an updated Black Sheep Boy. The release also includes lengthy liner notes by Will Sheff walking the listener through the circumstances surrounding the album.


    For Okkervil River fans (the most high-profile of whom was recently revealed to be President Barack Obama, who included Down Down the Deep River on his 2015 summer playlist), the Anniversary Edition is a loving, comprehensive, richly expanded presentation of a record many consider to be one of the band's best. For those new to the band, this might be the best place to start, the first step on a long road, the opening to a forest you can get lost in.

    "Loving Vincent" is the upcoming biographical animated film from newcomer directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. The movie follows Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth), the son of an acquaintance of Vincent van Gogh, as he attempts to deliver a letter from the painter following van Gogh's death. Armand soon finds himself retracing the steps taken by Vincent in his final days in an attempt to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. A film unlike any other, "Loving Vincent" is entirely hand painted - each of the movie's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on a canvas created using the same techniques as Vincent van Gogh.


    In addition to being a wonder for the eyes, "Loving Vincent" is a treat for the ears. Scoring duties fell to English composer Clint Mansell (Requiem For A Dream, Black Swan), who has crafted a masterpiece. Somber yet driven, Mansell's compositions are filled the swell of mournful strings pocked with delicate, deliberate notes in countermelodies. A perfect companion to the story of dreadful loss and resigned understanding, "Loving Vincent" demands to be heard. A beautiful rendition of "Starry Starry Night" performed by Lianne La Havas that serves as the film's credit song is also included.

    There are few bands that can or will match Sweden's Opeth. Since forming in the tiny Stockholm suburb of Bandhagen in 1990, the Swedes have eclipsed convention, defiantly crushed the odds, and, most importantly, crafted 12 stunningly beautiful, become one of the best bands on the planet; on album or on stage. Ask any Opeth fan. Enquire with any band that's shared the proverbial pine with the Swedes. Or, get a label representative to talk Opeth. They'll all tell you the same thing: Opeth are peerless. And they're only getting better.


    Opeth's new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band's imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album's opener "Persephone" to "The Wilde Flowers" and "Strange Brew" to the album's counterpart title tracks "Sorceress" and "Sorceress II", Opeth's twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colours mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly. Sorceress is, by definition, moored in Åkerfeldt's impressive record collection-his one true vice-but, as always, there's more invention than appropriation at play.


    "This time around I didn't think about what I wanted to do," Åkerfeldt reveals. "I was forced to write. But once I started, it was easy. This record, like the last record, didn't take long to write. Like five or six months. The thoughts behind this record developed as I was writing. The only thing I was thinking about with this record was to write that songs didn't musically connect. I made sure if I had a song that was new sounding for this record, I'd make the next song completely different. I think the songs are very different from one another. It's very diverse."


    Certainly, every Opeth record has had diversity. In 1995, Orchid reset the rules of death metal. Six years later, Blackwater Park hit the high note for musicality in a genre generally devoid of it. Damnation, in 2003, was the work of a band determined to upend the norm. Five years after that, Watershed closed Opeth's chapter on death metal by visiting its darkest corners and holding its native brutality aloft. And in 2014, Pale Communion officially bridged the progressive music gap by twisting the intrepid sounds of '60s, '70s, and '80s into contemporary brilliance. So, really, what's so different about Sorceress?


    "My music taste got a little wider," grins Åkerfeldt. "I started listening to jazz. I bought a lot of Coltrane records. I never really thought Coltrane would be for me because I like 'dinner jazz.' I like comfortable, soft, nice, and lovely jazz. Like Miles Davis' '50s stuff. Porgy and Bess, for example. I guess Dave Brubeck fits in there, too. So, that's the only new influx of musical inspiration for me. Other than that, I've been buying the same type of records I always have. Prog, symphonic rock, singer/songwriter, metal, hard rock But there wasn't anything that set me off like The Zombies or Scott Walker. Nothing got me going this time."


    Actually, that's not entirely true. Åkerfeldt's always mining for progressive gold. Good, rare music is particularly good at getting his motor running. He found double-gold in one-off Italian outfit Il Paese dei Balocchi and Bobak, Jons, Malone's ultra-obscure Motherlight album. To wit, get Åkerfeldt talking about either and he's all too pleased to discuss the finer points of Il Paese dei Balocchi's string-based darkness or how he fan-boyed Malone via email to get the famed British orchestrator and one-time Iron Maiden producer to contribute to Sorceress.


    "I absolutely love Il Paese dei Balocchi," Åkerfeldt professes. "They did one album. It's insanely good. It has everything I love about progressive rock in it. This album is so orchestrated and epic. It's got lots of string sections. It's very moody, dark, and sad. It's a mystery they didn't do any more. As for Will Malone, he did the strings and stuff for the Sabbath records-Sabotage and Never Say Die! But now he does strings for pop artists like Joss Stone, The Verve, Depeche Mode. I looked him up, mostly because he was the house engineer for Morgan Studios in the '60s. He was also in a few bands. Like Orange Bicycle and played on the Motherlight album. He also had a solo record, which is also amazing and superbly rare. It's orchestral. The bulk of it is strings. It's kind of like Nick Drake."


    Åkerfeldt's quick to point out, however, his newfound progressive music loves didn't directly inspire him to write Sorceress. The majority of the album was penned in Opeth's rehearsal space, where, nestled comfortably in a corner, a computer, a keyboard, and a microphone sit ready for the next Opeth epic. It isn't plush, but it's exactly the type of environment the frontman needs to focus his creative self into song.


    "When I'm in a writing mode, I have tunnel vision," says Åkerfeldt. "I have a really good work ethic. I go down to the studio everyday early in the morning and I work. I absolutely love it. It's so much fun. It's much easier now, too. I write complete demos. I sequence the songs in the order I want them to be on the record. I do mixing. I do overdubs. Once I'm done, I give copies to the guys so they can listen to the album. They practice to it on their own. When it's time to go into the studio, everybody does their own thing. It obviously works."


    For Sorceress, Opeth returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The experience was so positive and historical-the countryside studio was also home to pivotal Budgie, Queen, Rush, Judas Priest, and Mike Oldfield recordings-there really was no other option for Opeth and crew. Rockfield Studios or bust! The studio, with Dalgety yet again in tow, provided the necessary isolation, the right bucolic atmosphere, the best gear, and three square meals a day for Sorceress to come out the other end spitting fire. All in 12 bittersweet days, too.


    "There was a time when I came out of our recordings a wreck," Åkerfeldt bemoans. "But now I come out with a wish. I wish it wouldn't have gone so quickly. There's emptiness after I leave the studio. I love writing and recording in the studio. It's lovely at Rockfield. It's in the sticks. It's got horses and cows. There's lots of sheep in Wales. But the studio is just a studio. It's so beautiful there. So quiet. It's a residential studio as well, so we live there while we're recording. We have chefs for us, too. So, we can just be there, playing, recording, and hanging out."


    If life is like a Peter Max poster, the lyrics to Sorceress aren't. There's color, but they've been treated, corrupted, and befouled. That is to say, they're much darker. Some of bleak lyrical tones stem from Åkerfeldt's personal life-and are thusly contorted beyond recognition-while others touch grimly on topics like love and what happens to people on the other side of it. In fact, some of the lyrical ideas are similar to what was happening on Blackwater Park.


    "I made sure to write good lyrics," Åkerfeldt laughs. "This sounds very old-fashioned black metal to say, but the lyrics are misanthropic. It's not a concept record, so there's no theme running through the record. Most of the record deals with love. The negative aspects of love. The jealously, the bitterness, the paranoia, and the mind games of love. So, it's a love record. Love songs. Love can be like a disease or a spell."


    Luckily, for Åkerfeldt and crew-bassist Martín MÉndez, drummer Martin Axenrot, guitarist Fredrik Åkesson, and keyboardist Joakim Svalberg-the lineup doesn't have to deal with Sorceress' main theme. They've been together since Heritage was completed, and according to Åkerfeldt he's not been in a better band situation before. Not since Orchid. Not since Still Life. Not since Ghost Reveries.


    "It's the best band situation I've ever had. Fans will look at our eras and have their favorite lineup, but this is the best. Even the happiest days of the first and second lineups aren't comparable to what I have now. We never fight. It's like a good work team. We know each other professionally and personally. As much as we're a band, we're also friends. We hang out when we're not doing Opeth."


    A core team is a good thing, when Opeth's credibility is in full view of fans and critics. Åkerfeldt's very aware of what the masses have had to say about Opeth since Watershed. While some disliked the musical shift on Heritage, most have applauded it. They've come to expect something new from Opeth. True to form, Sorceress will give long-time fans and weary critics reason to re-think Opeth and what it takes to be musically fearless.


    "I hope they'll like the record," posits Åkerfeldt. "I can only talk from my perspective and taste here, but we offer diversity that's not really present in the scene today. Whatever genre. We've always been a special band. We've gotten a lot of shit for being different. We still do. Our time will come, I think. It comes down to perseverance. It comes down to not giving up or giving in to public opinion. Music is about doing your own thing or going your own way."

    Imelda May's fifth studio record, entitled Life. Love. Flesh. Blood, is set for release via Verve Records.


    It is clear that one of Ireland's biggest exports has found a new groove, here presenting the most personal and intimately autobiographical album she has ever written. The album is produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, who said of Imelda: "When I first happened onto her music, she was a punky Irish Rockabilly singer with a great band. When I ran across her several years later, she had gone through a change of lives and was writing about it with a wild intensity and singing about it in the most open-hearted way."


    The album marks a new direction for May who, in the time since her 2014 release Tribal, ended her marriage of eighteen years. Imelda May's new sound sits firmly outside of any sharply defined genre box, widely spanning blues, rock, soul, gospel and jazz. Life, Love, Flesh, Blood breathes new life into a classic sound, with Imelda's powerhouse vocal as distinctive as ever, cementing her position as one of the strongest vocalists of her generation. The singer herself describes the record as her most "honest" yet. Imelda's life changed considerably in the run-up to recording, and this is documented in the only way she knew how. Imelda explains, "It's therapy, like keeping a diary that a lot of people read. Some of my favorite songs don't say much, but they reveal everything."


    Recorded over seven days in Los Angeles, the album features musical contributions from guitar hero Jeff Beck ("Black Tears"), piano legend Jools Holland ("When It's My Time") and an accomplished group of backing musicians including the core trio of guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), drummer Jay Bellerose (Elton John & Leon Russell, Ray Lamontagne) and bassist Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets, Mini Mansions), the same band that recorded Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand.


    First single "Black Tears" is a personal and heart-wrenching ballad, it features a distinctive slide guitar part, coupled with a unique picking and guitar tone that could be the handiwork of only one man - the legendary Jeff Beck. Jeff Beck says of Imelda, "I knew it from the start you cannot ignore talent this unique."


    Imelda showcases her raw yet restrained breathtaking lead vocal, complimented by rich backing vocals and a super tight rhythm section. Written with Angelo Petragalia (Kings of Leon), the inspiration for the song's visual and poignant lyrics was inspired by a very personal moment for Imelda: "I wrote Black Tears with Angelo Petraglia after a heart-wrenchingly difficult goodbye. I closed my door and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror with black tears rolling down my face. It's a sight and situation most women have unfortunately seen ourselves in at some point in life. Angelo had a beautiful guitar piece that fit the mood perfectly."


    Imelda May, born and raised in The Liberties area of Dublin, has become one of Ireland's most celebrated female artists in history. Discovered by Jools Holland, who asked Imelda to support him on tour, Imelda has gone on to perform alongside legendary artists including Lou Reed, Bono, and Smokey Robinson.

    When Brand New released Deja Entendu in mid-2003, it caught a lot of their fans off guard. It found the band taking a stylistic leap forward from the clever (albeit cookie-cutter) pop-punk of their 2001 debut, exploring expanded sonic textures and indie rock overtones, their urgent choruses tempered by acoustic musings and softer introspections. It all seemed very deliberate yet completely natural all the same, and the record was an underground smash. Something even more substantial was definitely brewing beneath the band's emo façade, and as a result, Brand New's follow-up was hotly anticipated for the three years it took the band to release it. The resulting The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the completion of their pop-punk molting process and one of the best surprises -- that isn't really a surprise at all -- to come out of 2006. Even when they were playing straightforward pop-punk ditties, Brand New had an edge to them that made them seem smarter than their peers; now they sound even older and stronger (and like they've been listening to a lot of '90s college and indie rock). This record is dark and dense, yet accessible, a shadowy air permeating every crevice where Jesse Lacey's plaintive and often tortured lyrics aren't already residing. He draws listeners in with vulnerable ruminations and questions of love, death, self, and religion, and his vocal inflections bring as much meaning to the table as his carefully chosen words. The opening Sowing Season ebbs and flows steadily, moving along under light guitar before exploding with percussion, Lacey ably switching from a hushed delivery into an anguished cry of emotion before falling back down again effortlessly. With it, Brand New sets up the somber intensity of the record straightaway. Textural and sonic layers unfold at every turn -- punching drums and trembling guitars here, aching vocals and subtle touches of string there -- and the album moves with a directed force that seems so naturally powerful and uncontrived, it's almost ridiculous to think that the band cut its teeth with poppy anthems like Jude Law and a Summer Abroad. The Devil and God is not an album of hooks; the excellent percussive stomp of The Archers Bows Have Broken is the most immediate here, but songs get stuck in the brain nonetheless and demand repeated spins. Old fans especially smitten by Deja's Play Crack the Sky have no excuse not to love everything about this record, as even lengthy tracks (like the near-eight-minute Limousine or the chill-inducing beauty of Jesus) are completely compelling. People who were ready to discount Brand New into the emo/TRL heap of the 2000s better rethink their stance; Brand New seems to know exactly what they're doing and this record is a testament to their ability to stay true to themselves. Whether they want to stay underground or fully break into the mainstream, this album has the potential to do either. Either way it doesn't really matter -- whatever happens, there's no denying how excellent this record is.

    Alternatively sad and beautiful, the album-opening and flamenco-inspired Alone Again Or establishes the mood for what follows. Vocals overlap and soar; tempos rise and fall; surrealism trades places with reality.Forever Changes thrives both because of and in spite of a surfeit of labyrinthine chords and difficult notes that never repeat. Its ambitious construction almost forced the already fractured band to cede responsibilities to session musicians, which appear on two tracks. The quintet's resolve to not only complete the album, but to do so with such poignancy and curiosity, further enhances Forever Changes' standing.


    No wonder that, in the twilight of his troubled career, Lee performed the record in its entirely during concerts met with overwhelming critical acclaim. It was, and will always be, a personal manifesto of timeless relevance and appeal.

    The name is a partial misnomer. Though the band hails from Los Angeles, they do not partake in any sort of witchcraft. Yet their ability to conjure a specific time and place through their sound does suggest a kind of magic. On their eponymous debut album, L.A. Witch's reverb-drenched guitar jangle and sultry vocals conjure the analog sound of a collector's prized 45 from some short-lived footnote cult band. The melodies forgo the bubblegum pop for a druggy haze that straddles the line between seedy glory and ominous balladry; the production can't afford Phil Spector's wall-of-sound, but the instruments' simple beauty provides an economic grace that renders studio trickery unnecessary; the lyrics seem more descendent of Johnny Cash's first-person morality tales than the vacuous empty gestures of pre-fab pop bands. This isn't music for the masses; it's music for miscreants, burnouts, down-and-out dreamers, and obsessive historians.

    Album opener Kill My Baby Tonight is the perfect introduction to the band's marriage of '60s girls-in-the-garage charm and David Lynch's surreal exposÉs of Southern California's underbelly.Sade Sanchez's black velvet vocals disguise the malicious intent of this murder ballad, with the thumping pulse of bassist Irita Pai, the slow-burn build of drummer Ellie English, and Sanchez's Desert guitar twang helping beguile the listener into becoming a willing accomplice to the narrator's crimes. Brian follows the opening track with a similarly graceful, if not somewhat ominous, slow-mo take on a well-worn jukebox 7. It's a vibe that permeates the entire album,from the early psychedelic hue of 13th Floor Elevators on tracks like You Love Nothing, through the motorik beat and fuzzed-out licks of Drive Your Car, to the grittier permutation of Mazzy Star's sleepy beauty on Baby In Blue Jeans.

    Rarely is so much meaning conveyed in the space of six letters. And with regard to Xiu Xiu, its applications are infinite: always relevant, always provocative, always surprising, always evolving, always glittering.


    It's fitting, then, that as the band (now comprised of Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo, Bettina Escauriza, Marc Riordan, and returning member Devin Hoff) marks a decade in existence, such a powerful sentiment would serve as the title of its latest album.


    At its core, Always symbolizes the mutual camaraderie with and deep dedication to each person who has internalized Xiu Xius work, tattooed its name on their skin or soul, and throughout the past ten years made the band a part of their lives. The origin of these intense, everlasting bonds is Stewart. His fearless lyrics have given voice to life's most untouchable and taboo subjects, while his distinctively committed but hushed vocals crystallize and medicate their unsettling impact.


    Those familiar with the band's work will take particular note of the times Stewart re-visits profoundly personal accounts from his own life -- most prominently on Beauty Towne (a not-so-uplifting postscript to the muddle of those depicted in Clowne Towne from 2004's Fabulous Muscles) and Black Drum Machine (which finishes the narrative of incest and molestation begun on Black Keyboard from 2008's Women as Lovers).


    Elsewhere, Stewart's willingness to broach any subject finds him confronting both the topical and the intimate in equally meaningful ways: Gul Mudin seeks to bring comfort to an Afghani teenage boy murdered for sport by American soldiers; Joey's Song strives to do the same for Stewart's brother in the aftermath of a family tragedy.


    Factory Girls chronicles the sexual objectification and desperate existence of Chinese female, migrant workers. I Luv Abortion, featuring perhaps Stewart's most unhinged vocal ever, careens through the resolute heartache of a friend too young to be pregnant and seeks to personalize this most political issue.


    But while such writing is worthy of reverence, Always' most arresting moments lie in its sonic innovation -- transforming avant pop elements from an undertone into a bright black focal point while adding new influences such as choral music, kraut rock and animal field recordings.


    Produced by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier (who also contributes drums and vocals to the album) and mixed by John Congleton (Antony and the Johnsons, Marylin Manson, the Roots) the album is positively vibrant.


    During recording, Stewart saw a Bible verse spray painted on the wall of his gym. He interpreted the verse to mean, Horror and beauty are the same; love and hate are the same, the tireless dread of our own lives and of living can be embraced with the same fervency as what we find beautiful.


    Composed of this essence, the album proves that perhaps the only six letters to carry the same weight as always are these: Xiu Xiu.

    Weather Codes is the second album from Texan songstress Teresa Maldonado. Following the magical debut The Mammoth Sessions, the album is a study in heartbreak and loneliness set amidst the backdrop of the vast landscapes of American Southwest. Drawing influences from her perennial favourites the darkly gothic Bauhaus, as well as Natacha Atlas' exotic Mish Maoul, the black metal of Venom, Leslie Gore's protofeminist You Don't Own Me and the psych folk of early Will Oldham. If you listen really carefully you can also hear the swirling sand and the rustling wind in the baking heat of the Texas summer.


    Teresa recorded most of the songs at night with her blackmouth cur by her side. They were initially composed on her much loved piano which was in need of some tuning. Having not been tuned since around 1992, the piano had been moved from place to place too many times to count but lent a fractured beauty to her creations. From the early versions on the piano, she started to venture into the more electronic side of music mixing styles and sounds to create a marvelously eclectic collection of songs.


    Maldonado began writing Weather Codes during a messy relationship and amassed over forty songs, which she whittled down to fourteen forlorn and haunting tracks. The relationship started during her back and forth travels between Texas and Louisiana, and the album sees her bringing the landscape vividly to life. The little towns and their secrets. With tall tales that can be heard in tracks such as A Long Ride Home and Weather Codes Part 3. Everything else was turned in to a play of sorts with characters and veils; the tiring Texan veils of keeping up a smile when in public, even when leading a sad existence.

    On the surface, the two concepts Grace and Lies couldn't seem more different. One of them restores, the other ruins. One of them forgives, the other deceives. But to hear Kim Krans, frontwoman for Family Band, tell it, the two aren't opposed, they're intertwined. Grace and Lies are two characters I envisioned last summer, she says, by way of explaining the haunting title track on the group's second record. I couldn't get them out of my head. I saw them in a field behind our cabin, singing and slow dancing, like ghosts, sort of. They're the rulers of beauty and false promises. And we all fall for them from time to time."


    And therein lies the beautiful dichotomy of Family Band. A collaboration between visual-artist-turned-singer Kim Krans and her husband, onetime heavy-metal guitarist Jonny Ollsin (Children, S.T.R.E.E.T.S.), the merging of the couple's sensibilities makes for music that's simultaneously elegant and visceral. Their songs are as stark as bare trees in winter, Krans' baleful alto swooping mournfully over Ollsin's glimmering guitar like a black crow against a grey sky.


    As its title implies Grace & Lies is equal parts light and shadow, evoking the mystery and terror of early Cat Power, the ghostly aura of Warpaint, with whom Family Band toured in 2011, and the hushed longing of prime-era Cowboy Junkies. Though they explored similar territory, both sonically and lyrically, on their self-released debut, Miller Path, on Grace their canvas is wider, the greys lusher, the blacks deeper. Assisted by bass and lapsteel player Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger), the couple has made a record that boldly confronts life's darker questions.


    Miller Path was recorded mostly at our cabin upstate, while Jonny was busy with his metal band and I was focused on my visual arts career, Krans explains. It was my first time recording music and I didn't know how to steer the wheel. I didn't even know what the wheel was. But with Grace & Lies, we all decided what the overarching atmosphere and mood of the record should be. I made big drawings of each song in the control room, with all the parts and changes illustrated, and we built those visions with sound.

    That meticulous planning is evident throughout. Night Song revolves around a single, dazzling guitar riff that spirals like stars in the night sky; Ride builds steadily to an ominous, spectacular finale, timpanis booming and guitars gathering like storm clouds in a clear sky; and Again, which boasts production and instrumental work by Dan Rossen of Grizzly Bear, surges forward, a roaring river beneath a sheet of ice. Grace & Lies is a document of a band staring down life's larger riddles: love, death, loss and deceit.

    It's doubtful that Stephen McBean set out to make The Great Rock 'N' Roll Primer when he started conjuring the
    songs that would come to be Pink Mountaintops' Get Back.


    The record's beginnings were reasonably straightforward: McBean had moved to Los Angeles, taken a long hiatus
    from Black Mountain and an even longer one from Pink Mountaintops when he met producer Joe Cardamone, lead
    singer of Icarus Line at Valley Recording Company in Burbank,CA.The two bonded quickly over Flying Nun bands,
    Television Personalities, Roxy Music, Johnny Thunders, and Born Against. Joe was excited to meet someone he
    actually liked. Stephen was excited to work with someone who said Sing it like you would've sung it when you were

    saturation and never comes up for air. Sell Your Soul is a deep sigh and a motorcycle ride, a roll in the grass
    lamenting summertime blues with a little grit and a little harmony. And North Hollywood Microwaves is
    downright obscene. But what better way to start Side B than this? You can listen at hushed volumes so your parents
    don't hear, you can crank it in a dorm room, you can smirk to yourself from the safety of rock 'n'roll's old age.You

    The number of platitudes in music hit critical mass years ago, and among those tropes is that annoying, inescapable

    In the late '80s, Eight-O-Eight State was at the forefront of England's still developing electronic music scene. Don Solaris, the group's first widely available album in more than four years, is something of a return for the group.

    The music on this album is diverse, exploring many formats and styles. This album may upon first listen sound too much like a techno-rock crossover. But it is far from that - this music is foremost moody, deep, and full of risks.

    An ambient piece begins the album, and runs into the industrial and heavy sounds of Bond. Vocals are featured on this track, as well as a string bass and harmonica, bell sounds and chimes.

    Bird and Azura throw the listener into a more bass heavy and danceable space. Vocal samples and somewhat eerie sounds give Bird a very moody feel, while jamming drums assault the mind. Steel drums from the Caribbean soothe the ears, when drum and bass rhythms break in through the serenity, accompanied by the tense and beautiful vocals of Louise Rhodes from Lamb. A bass line ricochets between the steel drums and kick-drum punches, bouncing off the walls and the trees of this far-out hot jungle. 808 State continue their journey into pop dynamics, dance, jazz and electronic breathing with Black Dartangnon and Joyrider.

    Balboa brings in tons of bass, perfect for those who love to feel it coming up from below, or like a wall of sound from speakers. If you love music, you'll enjoy Don Solaris. It was experimental in the right ways and well ahead of its time.
