Two years after the split of Bauhaus, former members Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins came together to form Love and Rockets. Released in 1987, the band's third studio album Earth, Sun, Moon strayed slightly from the more gothic and psychedelic style of their previous album (also available from DPR) and embraced a more acoustic, folkier sound. It also scored a college radio hit with "No New Tale to Tell."

Paint It Black: 1985 Debut Is Penultimate Goth-Rock Album

Andrew Eldritch's Ghostly Vocals, Static Beats, Melodic Guitar Jangle Create Hauntingly Atmospheric Soundscapes

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI (Best Record Plant in America): First Time Any Sisters of Mercy Record Given Audiophile Treatment on LP

The template for all goth-rock records that followed, Sisters of Mercy's First And Last And Always stands as one of the-if not the most-influential albums of its kind ever released. Distinguished by Andrew Eldritch's ghostly singing, which gives the impression of hearing a forlorn ghoul croon from a foggy English graveyard, the 1985 set is drenched in gloom, claustrophobia, black humor, and dance-ready beats that provide exhilarating contrasts. Fans of the Cure, Depeche Mode, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, mid-period Nick Cave, and Joy Division will find it to be a new favorite record.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI (the best record plant in North America), Silver Label numbered limited edition LP presents First And Last And Always with a fuller, richer sound that positively obliterates the thin, feeble sonic perspectives that have limited the music until now. Every aspect from Eldritch's haunting singing to the group's jangling guitars and prancing bass lines finally gain genuine definition. Yet what's most improved is the sense of atmosphere: Sisters of Mercy revel in painting tone poems, where the feel and effect are as essential as the notes that are played. This is now an atmospheric tour de force.

Ever since it's release, First And Last And Always has been aptly shrouded in mythology. Eldritch pushed the envelope during the recording sessions, literally walking into walls and repeatedly unable to maintain his focus. Strung out on amphetamines, dazed by days of no sleep, upset by a recent breakup, and eating little, the vocalist channeled his discord into somber lyrics and brooding singing. He's framed by pulsing albeit lean, spare rhythms, patient tempos, and the clatter of a programmed drum machine that, in spite of its mechanical operation, sounds strangely organic. The songs evoke wet dungeons, walls-closing-in paranoia, and late-night strolls amidst the U.K.'s mysterious underground.

Despite its overall dark character, the record's arrangements value spaciousness, putting a premium on room and minimalism that makes each note count. As a result, twinkling pianos and keyboards parallel steel-cutting guitars and low-tuned bass lines that, in combination with Eldrtich's baritone, suggest glimmers of hope among the decay. Songs such as the shaking Possession, dramatic Some Kind of Stranger, and desperate Marian remain models of the gothic and post-punk disciplines more than 25 years after their debut. It's no surprise that, given all of the tension and personality that infuse the album, Sisters of Mercy disbanded just months after its release.

It's unlikely that any goth-rock album has ever sounded this good. This MoFi Silver Label LP will turn your room into rainy, dreary England, circa 1985, and expose you to one of the most harrowing vocal performances on record.

English Band's 1981 Sophomore Record A Superbly Articulate Expression of Post-Punk Gloom, Despair, and Melancholy That's Shot Through With Hope

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI (America's Best Record Plant): LP Illuminates Myriad Textures, Atmospherics

How strong and looming of an influence is Echo and the Bunnymen? Strong enough to be the one band name-dropped in a great piece of dialogue from the music-loving film High Fidelity, whereupon Jack Black's quipping record store clerk character cites the band as legitimate taste makers for much of the cutting-edge music that happened in the late 80's and beyond.

And on no record is the English quintet's greatness more apparent than on 1981's sophomore Heaven Up Here, the group's first effort to chart in the U.S. and a Top 10 smash in its native U.K. The record's merits are legion-and timeless: vocalist Ian McCulloch's cavernous croon; dream-weaving guitar lines pushed through ominous, melodic soundscapes; neopsychedelic dirges and self-aware lyrics; glamorous drama and tortuous tension. These characteristics and more turn the music restrained euphoria and what the band called black magic.

Rife with thick atmospherics and brooding dreamscapes, the harrowing songs clatter amidst arrangements infused with requisite air, space, and chamber echoes. Silhouetted guitar leads help convey moody dampness, despair, dread, and disgust, the themes directly connected to narratives that tackle distrust, dishonesty, betrayal, and arrested dreams. Cloudy and jagged for certain, but the majesty of Heaven Up Here relates to how, in spite of the haunted arrangements and claustrophobic feel, ribbons of light and hope illuminate its shadowy corners and nocturnal glow.

Sharing much in common with Joy Division's period output and a precursor to later work by The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, Love and Rockets, Ride, and countless other U.K. artists, Heaven Up Here soars on Will Seargant's angular six-string blues, McCulloch's vampiric grayness, and etched, stair-stepping bass movements.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI (America's best record plant), Silver Label numbered limited edition LP presents Echo and the Bunnymen's breakthrough in an involving fidelity that blows away what's on the original pressings and annihilates Rhino's CD remaster. Listeners will revel in the opened-up reverb, sound effects, complex tonalities, swimmy textures, and crafty overdubs that are so essential to the music. This is an 80's landmark, and if you like early U2, you need this album.

    Rocket

Rocket is Philadelphia-based artist Alex G's eighth full-length release-an assured
statement that follows a slate of humble masterpieces, many of them self-recorded and
self-released, stretching from 2010's RACE to his 2015 Domino debut, Beach Music.

Amid the Rocket recording process, Alex made headlines for catching the attention of
Frank Ocean, who asked him to play guitar on his two 2016 albums, Endless and Blonde.
More than any stylistic cues, what Alex took from the experience was a newfound
confidence in collaboration. Rocket wears this collaborative spirit proudly, and in its
numerous contributors presents a restless sense of musical experimentation - effortlessly
jumping from distorted sound collage to dreamy folk music to bouncing Americana.

Rocket illustrates a cohesive vision of contemporary American experience; the cast of
characters that Alex G inhabits have fun, fall in love, develop obsessions, get in trouble,
and-much like rockets themselves-ultimately they burn out. Alex, though, in a collection
of songs that's both his tightest and most adventurous, is poised only for the ascent.

    All Harm Ends Here

The Early Day Miners Good Time Band is back with another platter of Midwest post-goth. Having already introduced their new rhythm section (Matt Griffin on drums and Jonathan Richardson on bass) to the world over the course of their last two tours, with All Harm Ends Here Early Day Miners have combined the lushness of their second album Let Us Garlands Bring with the conciseness of their last full-length Jefferson At Rest. Moreso than on any of their previous efforts, EDM take both musical and tonal cues from the principal architects of the 80's sad-as-hell dark underground - Echo & the Bunnymen, the Church, early-the Cure, and most notably the Bauhaus/Tones On Tail/Love And Rockets axis. While contemporaries like Bedhead and Interpol have mined primarily the darkest aspects of these long shadows, there lies in Early Day Miners' method an innate sense of hope that transcends even their darkest themes (decay, suicide, desertion). Perhaps this is most evident in the guitar interplay of long-time collaborators Dan Burton (Ativin) and Joseph Brumley. Arpeggios abound, the works of Roger McGuinn and The Edge come to mind in that there is a sense of hopefulness and sublimation which drives the songs to a better place. While the album is filled with death and ghosts of all sorts, its unifying theme is the individual's ability to escape the death and ghosts. Even the making of the album (which was done just outside of the band's hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, on the outskirts of Hoosier National Forest) was plagued by ghosts and phantoms. Recorded at the Old Mt. Gilead Church - recently revamped into a recording studio and still immediately surrounded on three sides by a dozen acres of 150-year old cemetery - principal tracking for All Harm Ends Here was halted for days at a time on multiple occasions when inexplicable flutter infected the reels of tape, almost requiring EDM to relocate its principal tracking altogether. Mixing and overdubbing was done at Burton's own Grotto Home Studio in an effort to evade those ghosts in the machine which possessed Old Mt. Gilead. While the Early Day Miners don't make flashy music, their layered music rewards the repeat listener. If you listen closely enough, in fact, you can hear ghosts in the distance.

    Voyage

Wowowwowow! That was my reaction the first time I heard
De Lux. It's got a tropical post punk flavor reminiscent of
    the Talking Heads."
    - KCRW

They have some resemblance to Talking Heads and The Rapture
and my prediction is that they are the next revelation in the Los
    Angeles scene."
    - POOLSIDE

L.A.'s De Lux are a post-disco dance-punk DIY duo that sound like they could
have come out of 1979 or 1982 just as easily as 2013. Founders and multi-instrumentalists Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco didn't meet so much as simply appear to
each other, sometime before high school ended and after learning to correctly fall
off skateboards began. Even at age 18, however, it was the kind of connection that
had been years in the making.

Sean had been writing songs since he was 15 and had spent recent years recording
and re-recording his own songs. And Isaac had been on a strict diet of classic and
obscure disco and boogie music since he too was 15, figuring out the original source
of hip-hop's greatest samples thanks to an older brother with a DJ sideline and an
enviable collection. They both were after the same thing in music-the groove, they
say, where the bass and the beat align in a perfect way that makes you want a song to
go on forever. They were even in a band together, but it wasn't De Lux. But you can
hear the exact moment De Lux became a band when you listen to "Better At Making
Time," the song they built from Isaac's out-of-nowhere bassline just before practice
for that other band was supposed to start: "Sean was like, 'You should record that!'"
says Isaac, "and I was like, 'What, really?'"

From lead track "Better At Making Time," De Lux roars through Psychedelic Furs
or Duran Duran-style pop ("Love Is A Phase"), delivers shouts and whispers like
James Murphy at his most frantic ("Make Space"), sinks into Eno-esque moments
of bliss ("On The Day") and rockets through the agit-funk David Byrne-style rave-up finale "Sometimes Your Friends Are Not Your Friends." And this is all from the
first-take-they never re-record, says Sean. If they don't perfectly catch that beat as
it happens, they let it go. That's probably why Voyage sounds as wild and alive as it
does. Just like on that surprise recording "Better Making Time," you're not hearing
a band come together. And just like how they met, you're hearing a band appear.

    Alive II

    180g Audiophile Vinyl Reissue

Remastered To High Definition 192kHz/24-bit Audio For Maximum Fidelity

Celebrating four decades of decibels, KISS, Mercury Records and UMe proudly announce reissuing the legendary KISS albums on 180g audiophile vinyl. Remastered to high definition 192kHz/24-bit audio for maximum fidelity, these albums have never sounded so amazing and now
vinyl collectors will get what they've been demanding. All posters, sleeve art, stickers, etc that appeared in the original LP release where applicable have
been faithfully reproduced for the KISS Army.

For Kiss' breakthrough 1975 release Alive!, the band had a total of three studio albums from which to select their in-concert repertoire. By mid-1977, Kiss had released another three studio recordings (Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, and Love Gun), and with a new Kiss album needed for the holiday season, a second live album, Alive II, was assembled. Three sides were recorded live in concert at the Los Angeles Forum (with a few tracks recorded in Japan), while the fourth side featured five new studio recordings. Like its predecessor, there's been quite a lot of speculation concerning extensive overdubbing (the proof being that you can often hear several Paul Stanley voices singing backup simultaneously!), but Alive II shows that Kiss was still an exciting live band despite all the hype. Adrenaline-charged versions of Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, Calling Dr. Love, Shock Me, God of Thunder, I Want You, and Shout It Out Loud are all highlights. On the fourth side, Ace Frehley only plays on a single song (his self-penned classic Rocket Ride) for reasons unknown, while session guitarist Bob Kulick filled in for the AWOL Frehley. Among the studio tracks is the made-for-the-stage anthem Larger Than Life, which the band surprisingly never performed live.

    The Electric Lady

As she began the audacious task of following up on her acclaimed debut LP The ArchAndroid - an album that topped critic's lists in 2010 all over the world - she took along some trusty, brave companions: the original music producers of The ArchAndroid, Nate Rocket Wonder and Chuck Lightning of Wondaland Productions. And together they crafted a new strain of jamming music they called ish. In the hip hop community, ish is a euphemism for the profane four-letter word for excrement, but as Monáe explains, they set out, like proverbial alchemists, to turn lesser substances into gold.

This entire project was produced by Wonder & Lightning. We set out to make a soundtrack for the Obama era, something that spoke to the beautiful, majestic and revolutionary times that we're living in. The musical language we're speaking now is called ish. In the African-American community, we've been turning left-overs (like chitlins) and social depredation (like poverty) into delicacies and fine art for years. So we just set out to turn the rubbish all around us into something beautiful. Ish is the bowtie on the funk.

From the sound of The Electric Lady, ish is an urgent and dangerous form of dance music, rebel music that forces one to fight, jam, and fall in love. Like on The ArchAndroid, the sonic textures of the album are varied, and the past and present come together to explode and create a mind-blowing future for pop and soul music. For example, wondrous strings reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield and Bernard Herrmann orchestrations abound, Hendrixian guitar solos soar, Outkast-like raps float over punk rock riffs; defiant socially-conscious lyrics extol the virtues of soul-searching and fighting for change, while the funk simply melts your speakers: 808s boom and Prince-like synthesizers squiggle in your earhole, making it veritably impossible to just sit still.

    Adrian Younge Presents: The Delfonics

The Delfonics is the quintessential sweet-soul group. Hailing from Philadelphia, the crew formed in the mid-'60s, with the definitive original lineup as lead
vocalist and songwriter William Hart, his brother Wilbert Hart, and mutual high-school friend Randy Cain (later replaced by Major Harris). With the help of
producer/arranger Thom Bell-and with William's signature falsetto-the Delfonics set the tone for all other sweet-soul groups that would follow.

Between 1968 and 1974, the Delfonics had twenty charting singles and won a Grammy for their massive hit Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time). Out of
their twenty hits, William Hart wrote or co-wrote eighteen of them, thirteen with collaborator Thom Bell, like La-La Means I Love You, He Don't Really
Love You, and Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love). After five albums, the Delfonics would break up for good in 1975. Brothers William and
Wilbert parted ways and over the years often toured separately with different forms of the group. But over forty years after writing his first hit, lead singer
and songwriter William Hart has put his unmistakable falsetto back on analog tape and reinvented the Delfonics brand for a new generation.

Los Angeles producer/composer Adrian Younge envisioned a modern-day Delfonics album and pitched the idea to William Hart, who hopped a plane from
Philly to L.A. and began work on a new album. Younge helped to reshape the Delfonics by bringing on board two excellent young vocalists, Loren Oden
and Saudia Mills-as well as Om'Mas Keith on the single Stop and Look (And You Have Found Love)-to work alongside William. Adrian Younge is a
self-taught multi-instrumentalist who traded in his MPC sampler for a carefully curated studio of authentic gear. Younge rocketed to international
recognition after composing the original score for the film Black Dynamite and has since release ground-breaking projects including The Souls of
Mischief's "There Is Only Now" and Ghostface Killah's "Twelve Reasons to Die" concept albums.

Younge brings a unique perspective on modern rhythm and blues. I was studying Delfonics stuff for years, Younge reveals. I studied Delfonics to do the
Black Dynamite stuff. I've been a fan, and I've just studied their music for so long that when I got the opportunity to do this, it just really blew my mind.
From the very beginning, it was Younge's intention to create an old-school Delfonics vibe but offer a very hip-hop-informed perspective. There are
distinguishing musical elements that Delfonics fans will recognize, like the electric sitar guitar, the French horn, string arrangements, and the tympani. I
want people to expect something classic but not expect to hear the same thing rehashed, Younge says. I want to push it forward. William and I strived to
    push this forward.

Younge now makes this breath-taking musical outing available once again on his own Linear Labs imprint.

Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles (Box Set)

Box Set Features 13 x 7" Singles On Colored Vinyl

Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.

He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who reveled in his own contradictions.

All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. Fittingly released on Mercury Records for the world outside North America, and on Hollywood Records in North America, this box set brings together all 13 of Freddie's solo singles on individually coloured vinyl.

From his debut solo single I Can Hear Music, released under the name Larry Lurex, through the dance floor-influenced solo anthems of the 80s and up to his collaborations with legendary Spanish opera singer Montserrat CaballÉ including the timeless Barcelona, this is a journey through the career of a unique talent.

Born Farrokh Bulsara on the East African island of Zanzibar on September 5, 1946, the rechristened Freddie Mercury was already a star in his own mind by the time he formed Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor in 1970. Where his band mates had studied astrophysics, dentistry and electronics at college, Freddie majored in stardom.

His first solo single actually emerged a week before Queen's own debut 7". Released in 1973 and credited to Larry Lurex in a nod to the fashionably flamboyant noms de rock of the glam era, the Beach Boys cover I Can Hear Music and its B-side, Goin' Back, were recorded as a favour towards a musical project by Trident Studios' house engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable, in 1972.

As Queen's career rocketed towards the heavens, Freddie poured his energies into the band. It would be more than a decade before he released his second solo single, the pulsating, electronic Love Kills. Originally released in 1984, Love Kills was a collaboration with famed Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder for the soundtrack to Moroder's update of the groundbreaking 1927 silent movie Metropolis. A Top 10 UK hit, it found Freddie moving away from Queen's traditional sound, paving the way for what he would do next.

Released in 1985, Freddie's debut solo album, Mr Bad Guy, fully explored the music he had fallen in love with in the dance clubs of Munich and New York. The four hit singles released from that album - I Was Born To Love You, Made In Heaven, Living On My Own and Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow, all of which are included in the Messenger Of The Gods box set - crackled with playfully hedonistic energy, but they also hid a more serious side to Freddie. Here was a man who craved the good times but wanted something deeper as well.

Within two years, he had abandoned the sound of the clubs for the music of the opera house - though not before releasing both the epic single Time, the theme to the lavish stage musical of the same name produced by Dave Clark, and his outrageous (and strangely revealing) Top 5 cover of The Platters' 1965 hit, The Great Pretender.

In 1987, he dived headlong into the world of opera and classical music with the towering single, Barcelona. A duet with legendary Spanish soprano Montserrat CaballÉ, an idol of Freddie's, it came about after the opera star asked him to write a song about her home town.

Barcelona remains one of the most momentous hit singles not just of Freddie's career but in pop history. Not only did it lead to an album of collaborations between these two huge talents, but the title track was also chosen as the official anthem of the 1992 Olympics. That song, together with the two other singles taken from the album, The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On, are all included as part of Messenger Of The Gods with their original B-sides.

In October 1988 Freddie and Montserrat were invited by the King and Queen of Spain to perform Barcelona on the steps of Barcelona's National Palace of Montjuic at the open air La Nit festival which was staged to mark the arrival of the Olympic Flag from Seoul.

But sadly, Freddie would not live to see the fruits of his collaboration with Montserrat CaballÉ showcased at the Barcelona Olympics. He passed away on November 24, 1991, just seven months before the Games took place. The grand opening ceremony was a fitting tribute to a man who thrived on spectacle.

Messenger Of The Gods is completed by two posthumous singles, In My Defence and Living On My Own (No More Brothers Radio Mix), the latter of which became Freddie's first solo number 1 and was the biggest selling European single of the year in 1993.

Had he lived, it is anyone's guess where this most restless and protean of singer's muses would have taken him. But Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles is a towering legacy, a collection of songs which will never lose their stature of classics and will live on forever.

    Arab Strap (Pre-Order)

Reflecting on a 10-year career that was as influential as it was controversial, Arab Strap's self-titled compilation highlights an extraordinary output that staunchly refused to conform to expectation. From the string-led sashay of Shy Retirer to the piano-driven noir of Love Detective; the lo-fi crunch of The Clearing to the spartan electronica of Rocket, Take Your Turn, Arab Strap were a fearless and resolutely original proposition from the minute Aidan regaled us with tales of their First Big Weekend back in 1996.

Here's Aidan on the tracklisting for Arab Strap:

We chose 20 songs - one for each year since we started - and decided to split them into two lots of 10. The first disc's a kind of best-of, but we just stuck to the more electronic stuff for this - there's so many different sounds going on in Arab Strap albums, so we wanted to make it a more coherent whole.

The second disc's filled with rarities from EPs and b-sides and outtakes and stuff, so there's some louder rock stuff on there. I think all of these songs could've been on the albums they were recorded for, but sometimes you're trying to tell a story and they just don't fit. This disc is more live drums and rock-y too, so anyone looking for the noise should hopefully be satisfied.

    Good Luck (Out of Stock)

For the past eight years, Boston's rising stars Girls Guns and Glory have been making a name
for themselves through relentless touring (about 200 gigs a year worldwide), the release of four critically acclaimed records, a slew of local awards, including being the Boston Music Awards first act of its genre to win Act of the Year, and international awards (Independent Artist of the Year at the French Country Music Awards). And, now, the hard-working band is refining their focus to the roots of rock 'n' roll with a twist of country on
their fifth album, "Good Luck," due on February 4, 2014 on Lonesome Day Records.

The foursome (Ward Hayden on vocals/guitar, Paul Dilley on electric and upright bass/piano, Josh Kiggans on
drums/percussion, and Chris Hersch on lead guitar/banjo) found inspiration for this record from early '50s rock
'n' roll icons such as Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly, as well as country greats like Hank Williams
    and Johnny Cash.

"Good Luck" looks back to that era of music for a more rock 'n' roll-focused record that kicks off with the heartfelt, feel-good rocker "All the Way Up To Heaven," which sets the tone for the album thematically. "It's about finally winning in love and feeling that thrill of getting something good and having a true appreciation of it," says the singer.

Co-written with Jimmy Ryan (Blood Oranges), "All the Way Up To Heaven," is one of the three songs that Hayden did not singularly craft. He notes, "Jimmy Ryan has long been one of my favorite songwriters. He's got a gold tooth, a taste for whiskey and is possibly the best left-handed mandolin player on the planet. Which is part of what makes his songwriting so special. He doesn't try to get fancy or get flashy with technical intricacies. As a
songwriter he exemplifies three chords and the truth. Like Hemingway with a mandolin. He boils a song down to its bare bones, to where you can see and feel the grit. I think that makes him great. He serves the song from its inception."

The other songs were written over the past two years with the exception of two, "Shake Like Jello" and "UUU," which have been in the band's repertoire for about four years. "We never really had a place for those songs because we were viewing ourselves more of a country band than a rock 'n' roll band and those two songs are definitely more rocking. They fit perfectly on this album," he notes.

Another song close to GGG's heart and the band's Northeast roots is the ballad "Centralia, PA." "Chris and Paul are originally from Eastern Pennsylvania and we tour a lot in that area. We found out about this coal-mining town there called Centralia that was destroyed by a coal fire over 50
years ago. It's a ghost town now because it's unfit to live in. I became fascinated by the tragic story of the town and we kind of wanted to put Centralia back on the map with this song," he says.

Produced by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (Nils Lofgren, Steve Earle, The Bottle Rockets), "Good Luck" was mixed by Ambel and recorded by Mario Viele at Cowboy Technical Services Recording Rig in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and will be available on CD, vinyl and iTunes on February 4, 2014 via Lonesome Day Records. The band is up for Americana Artist of the Year the 2013 Boston Music Awards and Ward Hayden is up for Male Vocalist of the Year. And, Girls Guns and
