    1969 Live

1969: Velvet Underground Live, is without question the best (legally-released) document of this band's considerable strengths as a live act. While they were a somewhat more sedate band with Doug Yule on bass rather than Cale, they still had plenty of life left in them at this stage of the game; there are few voyages into the sonic unknown here, but Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison had matured into one of rock's most potent guitar combinations, Maureen Tucker was as distinctive a drummer as even picked up a pair of mallets, and with Doug Yule at her side they comprised a truly superb rhythm section. Sounding tight, confident, and passionate on every cut, this set finds the band visiting highlights from all four of their studio albums, as well as a handful of previously unreleased numbers. From the delicacy of New Age and I'll Be Your Mirror to the rave-up energy of What Goes On and White Light/White Heat, 1969: Velvet Underground Live captures the many sides of their musical personality with commendable skill, and while it isn't their best album, it's one of the best places for a beginner to explore their body of work.

    Transformer (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 194/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

It is well known that comparisons seldom get to the root of the matter, but in the case of Lou Reed, for example, they certainly reveal the unassuredness of those people who made them. Is he or isn't he the Chuck Berry or Sergeant Pepper of the Seventies, or is he deliberately building up an image of himself as an ultra-sensitive Frankenstein, who lived out his neuroses and drug trips in horrific sound? Some records are so unbelievably repulsive, raged the magazine Rolling Stone, that one would best like to take physical revenge on the artists who commit such offences.

The album Transformer, however, can by no means be classified as a case of 'acoustic bodily harm'. It appeared just a few months after the somewhat unsuccessful appearance of Lou Reed's fairly underground first release and rocketed straight into the charts. This production had two British guardian angels to help it on its way, namely David Bowie and Mick Ronson, both of whom obviously knew how to steer Reed's songwriting qualities into safe waters, without watering down his biting sarcasm and humorous provocation.
And that's why grating guitar rock (Vicious) is found alongside a bittersweet, tender ballad (Perfect Day) and even an old-time jazz parody (Goodnight Ladies) which is sung with a tongue a heavy as lead. Why then compare this highly original music mix with others, when it's so much easier to hear this record for what it is - a truly cult album?

    Musicians:

    • Lou Reed (vocal, guitar, arranger)

    • Mick Ronson (vocal, guitar, piano, arranger)

    • David Bowie (vocal, arranger)

    • Ronnie Ross (saxophone)

    • Klaus Voorman (bass)

    • Herbie Flowers (tuba, bass)

    • John Halzey, Barry Desouza; Ritchie Dharma (drums)

    Recording: 1972 by Arun Chakranerty

Production: David Bowie and Mick Ronson

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Winter At The Roxy

Previously Unreleased 1976 Radio Broadcast Featuring Sublime Live Versions Of Velvet Underground And Solo Classics

Broadcast live in early 1976 from L.A.s legendary Roxy Theatre by that city's KMET FM Radio, this dynamic set captures the former Velvet Underground front-man, Lou Reed, working through an eight song selection of some of his finest work he had released up to that juncture. Featuring a sublime Im Waiting For The Man dating back to the first VU album, Lisa Says, a song written at a similar time and indeed demoed by the Velvets but not released until it's inclusion on Lou's first, eponymous solo LP in 1972, and two cuts apiece from October '75's Coney Island Baby (Kicks & the title track) and his then yet to be released Rock and Roll Heart (I Believe In Love & You Wear It So Well) a record not issued until October '76. He was never going to get out alive however without performing ...Wild Side, thus a 10 minute rendition of this classic tune provides the penultimate number of this energetic performance.

    Road From Memphis

The Road from Memphis starts with a young Booker T. Jones hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn's front yard where, while folding them for his after]school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. It ends with Booker and The Roots roaring through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (and propulsive covers of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and Lauren Hill's Everything Is Everything.

Along for the ride are vocalists Matt Berninger of the National, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, and Booker himself, telling the story of how the funk/soul sound that Booker helped invent spiraled out from Memphis, touching The Roots' hometown of Philadelphia, New York (where engineer Gabe Roth has been recreating classic soul sonics for everyone from Sharon Jones to Amy Winehouse), and Detroit.

Detroit as in Dennis Coffey, legendary Motown session guitarist who introduced driving rock]funk rhythm to hits like Cloud Nine and Ball of Confusion by the Temptations, and brings his Detroit grit to these tracks. The Road from Memphis is classic Memphis soul, and classic Booker in the tradition of Green Onions, but beyond that it is the story of a sound, and how Booker, working with the inheritors of his sound, is keeping a tradition alive.

The Weather Report/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series Continues!

The Original #1 1977 Jazz Rock Fusion Classic Heavy Weather

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl & Gatefold Cover Presentation

Mastered By Joe Reagoso And Manufactured At R.T.I.

The legendary Weather Report set the music world on fire back in the early seventies with their hypnotic blend
of progressive-fused jazz with funk, prog-rock and soul, augmented with the brilliant and skillful musicianship of their
superstar founders Wayne Shorter on saxophone and various electronic reeds and the late great Joe Zawinul on a
stunning array of keyboards and electronic instruments. Both of these legendary musicians/composers worked with
Miles Davis on his classics like Bitches Brew, plus solid tenures with legends like Cannonball Adderley (Zawinul) and
Art Blakey (Shorter) all of which would prove to become the huge catalyst for things to come.

Throughout the remainder of the late seventies and beyond, Weather Report's fine arsenal of recordings would
take the band to the top of all the popular music charts. The 1977 fusion classic Heavy Weather would go on to yield
one of the biggest albums of their career as it hit the top rungs of the jazz charts, plus major showings in the pop and
R&B charts thanks to the top charting hit single Birdland.

No stone is left unturned, as this masterpiece is loaded with smashes like Joe Zawinul's brilliant ballad A Remark
You Made, the powerful Palladíum by Wayne Shorter and of course the funk assault of Jaco's Pastorius on Teen Town
all which made this a top charting album in 1977.

As one of the most enduring albums in their massive career catalog, Heavy Weather also features the all-star
lineup of Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius (bass), Manolo Badrena (drums) and Alex Acuna (percussion).
All in all, Heavy Weather took the fans by storm, forever retaining the title superstars to the Weather Report franchise.

Friday Music is pleased to announce for the very first time here on audiophile vinyl Heavy Weather by Weather
Report. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios, this amazing classic truly shines in the
audiophile vinyl domain. Pressed at R.T.I., this brilliant masterwork truly resonates as you remember from years ago.

To enhance your limited anniversary edition album experience, this first time audiophile vinyl release is also for
a very short time being offered in a first time gatefold cover presentation, featuring the original album cover design
    by Lou Beach.

    The Quine Tapes

The Velvet Underground's revolutionary mix of boundary-breaking sonic extremism and transgressive lyrical content changed the face of rock 'n' roll forever. It was on stage that the band's unprecedented vision truly came to life. But the band never made any official live recordings, leaving fans with the small handful of live Velvets tapes that have emerged over the years. Undeniably, the most comprehensive and compelling embodiment of the Velvet Underground's live brilliance is the bountiful cache of 1969 tapes recorded by Velvets fan and future alt-rock guitar icon Robert Quine (who would go on to play with the Velvet Underground's leader Lou Reed more than a decade later).

The Velvet Underground - The Quine Tapes is a definitive document of the live Velvet Underground. Captured on tape by Quine in San Francisco and St. Louis between May and December of 1969, the recordings feature the Velvet Underground's final lineup of Reed, guitarist Sterling Morrison, drummer Moe Tucker and bassist Doug Yule. The material includes incendiary performances of such seminal Velvets standards as I'm Waiting for the Man, What Goes On, Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, White Light/White Heat, Venus in Furs, Heroin, New Age, The Black Angel's Death Song and Rock and Roll. Also included is a rare performance of the Follow the Leader, an original song which the band never officially released, as well as stunningly different versions of the epic Sister Ray.

These historic Velvet Underground performances are now available on vinyl for the first time ever. To commemorate the occasion, Sundazed Music has designed a lavish six-LP box set, with the discs packaged in three separate gatefold jackets and contained in a deluxe slipcase. The package features incredible new cover art commissioned especially for this vinyl release, plus rare photos, Verve label repro's, poster/handbill inserts, and detailed liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke. In keeping with Sundazed's usual exacting standards, this set has been newly mastered by Bob Irwin from the original source material and is perfectly pressed on high-definition virgin vinyl.

    Singles 1966-1969

Sundazed is proud to release The Velvet Underground Singles 196669, a 7 x 7 single box set honoring the legendary New York combo's 7 vinyl output in their rare mono versions. The set features exact reproductions of Velvet Underground singles, two of them with their original picture sleeves. The singles are packaged in a distinctively designed box, along with rare vintage photos and new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke (who also penned the acclaimed notes for the historic 1995 Velvets CD box set Peel Slowly and See).

The Velvet Underground whose membership included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, Doug Yule and Nico introduced numerous sonic and thematic innovations that laid much of the groundwork for punk and alternative rock. Although they're now acknowledged as one of the most influential bands in rock history, during their existence the Velvets barely registered on mainstream radar, and were often reviled by mainstream observers as well as hippie-era arbiters of cool. But, as Fricke writes in the new set's liner notes, Somewhere, in another rock & roll universe, the Velvet Underground are more than a legendary band. They are stars, with hit singles, the original seven-inch masterpieces inside this box.

Although they never came close to scoring a hit, the Velvet Underground was ideally suited to the 7 single format. The Velvet Underground were a great singles band, David Fricke notes, adding that the Velvets invented modern rock with searing guitar distortion, throbbing improvisation and brutally realistic tales of life on the wild side. But they did it all in these classic pop songscompact miracles of raw drive, intimate beauty and Top 40 ecstasy, heard again in the original, thrilling mono single mixes.

The seven singles included in The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 comprise the four Velvets singles originally released in the U.S. on the Verve and MGM labels, plus an additional pair of singles that were prepared for release but never made it to the marketplace and a special radio-only promotional single. The singles feature alternate mono versions that differ in significant ways from the songs' better-known stereo album versions. For instance, the band's 1966 debut single All Tomorrow's Parties appears here in a special mono edit that amplifies the song's melodic beauty and sonic tension, and a mono mix of their sophomore single Sunday Morning emphasizes the song's haunting quality. Meanwhile, the mono single version of White Light/White Heat exemplifies the vintage Velvets' stark, distortion-laden fury, while a mono edit of What Goes On accentuates that song's inherent pop jangle.

The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 also includes two unissued singles, one with a never-released pairing of White Light/White Heat backed by I Heard Her Call My Name, and the other with Temptation Inside Your Heart and Stephanie Says, recorded in the waning days of the band's classic Reed/Cale/Morrison/Tucker lineup and unheard by the public for nearly two decades thereafter. The set's seventh single is a reproduction of a vintage promotional disc, a two-and-a-half minute radio spot promoting the band's eponymous third album and featuring legendary disc jockey Bill Rosko Mercer, with excerpts from Im Set Free, What Goes On and Beginning to See the Light, as well as a picture sleeve with an un-airbrushed variation on the album's iconic cover art.

By presenting the Velvets as a singles band, The Velvet Underground Singles 196669 shows, in David Fricke's words, rock history the way it should have been: the Velvet Underground as the New York Beatles, guaranteed to blow up your radio and your mind.

    Velvet Underground (3rd LP)

Ranked 314/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Velvet Underground's self-titled third album was in many ways the debut of a new band as John Cale had departed by this time and was replaced by Doug Yule. Cale's more experimental style was replaced by Sterling Morrison's eloquent guitar accompaniment which allowed the human side of Lou Reed's songwriting to emerge like never before. Unobstructed by walls of sonic noise, Reed's insight and genius really shines here.

    Rock 'N Roll Animal

Specially remastered audio on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, includes live versions of Sweet Jane, Heroin and more!

Following his somber 1973 concept album Berlin, Lou Reed switched gears once again with 1974's Rock 'n' Roll Animal, a searing live set recorded at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York in December of 1973 with his road band at the time which featured the twin guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. The 5-song set primarily consists of extended arrangements of former Velvet Underground classics including a 13-minute plus version of Heroin, and a 10-minute Rock 'n' Roll to go along with more concise takes on Sweet Jane and White Light/White Heat. Rock 'n' Roll Animal amplifies the music of the Velvet Underground as never before or since and it finds Lou Reed doing what he does best, challenging the status quo with artistic ambition and restless abandon.

    New York In LA 1989

    Limited Edition 140 Gram Vinyl

Lou Reed's 15th solo album, New York, released early in 1989, was universally praised by critics and fans alike and became Reed's must successful album since 1974's Sally Can't Dance, reaching No. 40 on Billboard and No. 14 in the UK. On 22nd April Lou played the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, a performance which was the subject of a live FM broadcast by local radio - the results of which can now be heard on this release. Featuring 10 of New York's 14 cuts, plus a smattering of oldies and a somewhat unusual choice of cover in Ol' Blue Eyes' 'One For My Baby' - this recording is a delightful artefact for fans of the late Lou Reed and a nice reminder of what this often misrepresented albeit legendary artist was capable of.

Ranked 292/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

For their second release and first out of the shadow of Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground stripped production values down to a minimum and turned out a primitive rock & roll masterpiece. Under its distorted and abrasive sound are some of Lou Reed's greatest songs including the title track and Here She Comes Now and the album went on to become a major influence on punk and experimental rock.

    Berlin

Ranked 344/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Nowadays acclaimed as Lou Reed's best solo album, 'Berlin' is the follow up to Reed's 'Transformer'.
A tragic rock opera about a drug addicted couple, heavy orchestrated and musically far away from the glam-rock of 'Transformer' and closer to the art-rock of the Velvet Underground (there are 2 tracks here played live by Velvet Underground in 1966, and Caroline Says is of course a redo of Stephanie Says from Velvet Underground's self- titled album).

The album got poor reviews when released in July 1973. Nevertheless, like good wines, 'Berlin' has aged and proved an inspiration for many bands.

Lou Reed got so disillusioned by the harsh critics, he did not include songs form 'Berlin' (recorded in London w/Bob Ezrin) in his live set for years.

In 2007 Lou Reed fulfilled his hopes and toured 'Berlin' with a 30-piece band; this tour was filmed and released on dvd in 2008 (which got rave reviews...).

Musicians on LP: Lou Reed (vocals & acoustic guitar), Bob Ezrin, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jack Bruce, Ansley Dunbar, Tony Levin, Steve Winwood, Steve Hunter, Dick Wagner a.o.

    Leonard Cohen Greatest Hits

'No-one ever listens to me anyway, I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record', Neil once said during an episode of the notorious 'Young Ones'. This has changed dramatically. Cohen's 'Hallelujah' has reached the charts several times performed by various vocalists. Massive sold out concerts and well-known artists like Lou Reed, Bono, Nick Cave, Antony and Rufus Wainwright paying homage resulted in a huge re-appreciation which led to a whole new generation getting in touch with Cohen's impressive repertoire. This album is the perfect anthology of this legend's career.

    Live At Max's Kansas City

There's a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or not
this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder on
August 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed's final appearance with the VU. Historical merit seems to be more
    the issue than high fidelity.

At The End Of Cole Ave - 1st Night

The Velvet Underground were arguably at their live peak in late 1969. Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, and Doug Yule (who'd replaced John Cale a full year previously) had developed into a sensationally tight and adventurous quartet, and this show - the first of two recorded on consecutive nights before a tiny audience in Dallas, Texas - is unquestionably one of the finest surviving documents of them in performance.

    Rock Action

Iggy Pop's various musical style changes throughout his career are detailed in this collection of rare and unreleased tracks. The awesome power of the Stooges is on display as well as Iggy Pop's now dated experiments in new wave. Riddled with cover tunes, the album does not betray Iggy Pop's roots in garage rock. Pulled from live dates throughout the '80s the cover tunes range from Family Affair by Sly and the Family Stone to the Batman Theme. These cover tunes are simply points of interest rather than the powerful rock & roll that Iggy Pop shows himself to be capable of. Louie Louie slurs into Hang on Sloopy. No Fun gives the nod to Lou Reed and becomes Waiting for the Man, but the strongest points of the album are the ad-libbed tracks. Rock Action and Modern Guy display Iggy Pop's ability to make up lyrics off the top of his head. They appear to be just studio jams that have been brought to the stage with powerful results. In Rock Action, it sounds as though Iggy Pop was just musing on his former bandmate's self-proclaimed title, creating a song that puts a voice to his demand for action. Only two other tracks on the collection reach the same level as the jam tracks. I Got a Right and Gimme Some Skin are two of the Stooges' greatest songs that never made it onto their studio albums. The heavy rhythms of Gimme Some Skin are the Stooges at their best with Iggy Pop again putting voice to his need for action. --Matt Whalley

Originally released in 1988, Only Life is the third album by the Feelies and their first with major label support. The album includes classic originals like "Deep Fascination" and "The Undertow". A cover of the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On" made Lou Reed take notice at the time. Choosing them as an opening act, sometimes performing with them for encores.
