    Build (Awaiting Repress)

Built on a foundation of beats evoking vinyl breaks, house and big-beat, the latest album from Lotus is a funky dance party from start to finish. The ten tracks on Build showcase live drums, guitar, organ, and horns that come drenched in classic analog luxuriance, with electronic elements peppered throughout. This is the sound of a band that has spent years rocking live crowds distilled to a strong studio concentrate of body-moving beats and muscular melodies.

"This album was recorded live to analog tape in studios in Philadelphia and St. Louis. We used live drums, guitar, bass, Hammond organ, upright piano, analog synths, live percussion, and live horns from the group Rubblebucket, then peppered in electronic elements. The project was mixed through an analog process to give it a deep richness. These songs were written over the course of the past 2 years and road-tested across the country. I think this our tightest and best sounding album yet. The songs have a largeness that match Lotus move from clubs into premier venues around the country." - Luke Miller

    Lotus (Awaiting Repress)

Lotus' new self-titled album moves in a decidedly more electronic direction than their last two releases (2008's Hammerstrike, 2009's Oil on Glass/Feather on Wood). Analog synthesizers, manipulated sounds, dub effects and heavy bass are balanced by horns and string arrangements in addition to Lotus' standard guitar/bass/drums instrumentation.

Grooves range from slinky funk and gritty half-time on the first half of the album to the beautiful and expansive closing track Orchids. Although bits and pieces of vocals are used throughout, the only song to feature singing is The Surf. And while it may be the closest thing to a pop song the band has ever released, the melodic guitar hooks and ecstatic synth are pure Lotus.

Similar to their music, the recording process for the album looked in multiple directions at once. It began using traditional recording methods tracking live to analog tape, but shifted to modern techniques for editing and mixing to expand into a musical space filled with uniquely crafted sounds. The band road tested and tweaked these tracks for the better part of two years. The result is an album worthy of the self-titled status, the band's singular sound and spirit runs through every track.

    Pattern + Grid World

Pattern + Grid World is the new EP from producer/musician Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus). While his album Cosmogramma was high in concept and wide in musical collaboration, Pattern + Grid World pulls the focus back to Ellison and his machines. These machines are speaking from the go, as Clay introduces itself in a fog of synth and vocoder and gives way to one of the many surprises here, the schizophrenic ping-ponging electro of Kill Your Co-Workers. Drenched in alternating melodies, it's a synthetic counterpart to the grand string and harp arrangements of Cosmogramma, making acclaimed illustrator Theo Ellsworth's subtly psychedelic cover image of vision-through-noise all the more intimate.

The Seal of the Blue Lotus

Originally released on John Fahey's Takoma Records in 1965, The Seal of the Blue Lotus is the debut album from American guitar soli legend Robbie Basho. In college Basho immersed himself in the study of Asian art and culture, even changing his last name to that of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, and his music shows a much greater Eastern influence than contemporaries like John Fahey and Peter Lang. Basho was particularly entranced by the raga form which is apparent in classics like "Dravidian Sunday" from this album. A guitar soli masterwork reissued here on 180 gram vinyl.

    Los Angeles

In the aftermath of the Los Angeles LP, Flying Lotus set out his stall at the vanguard of new bass music, remixed the likes of Stereolab and Radiohead and became a regular fixture in 2008's end of year polls.

Now, with L.A. EP 3 X 3, the third and final piece of the accompanying EP series, FlyLo and a few friends explore the psychedelic ambience and dream-like elegance that brought such a vital depth to the album's soul.

Two new Flying Lotus compositions, Endless White and Spin Cycles display his deft touch and unrivalled eye for beauty. Breakage's Testament turns Gonjasufi's quiet desperation into a tribal battle cry. But it is perhaps the collaboration with harpist Rebecca Raff that is most striking, revisioning Auntie's Harp into a swirling symphony of rolling arpeggios and piercing electronics.

In the past couple of years since his debut album, Los Angeles, Flying Lotus has grown into the position of being far more than a producer, he has helped materialize a far-reaching strain of musical ideology that has encompassed not only a global family of like-minded artists, but also a nearly infinite palate of planetary sonics. No longer simply an outgrowth of Ellison's machines, the music here is also the product of live instrumentalists from the worlds that Cosmogramma engages. There's the constant bass presence of Thundercat, a cornerstone of Sa-Ra Creative; there's Rebekah Raff's harp connecting the dots between the music of Harry Partch and Ghostface Killah (both of which she's performed); there's an appearance by the tenor sax of Steven's cousin and jazz royalty, Ravi Coltrane, and by the voice of one Thom Yorke, an Oxford bloke taking respite from singing in the most influential rock band of the 21st century.

    Until The Quiet Comes

Composed, according to FlyLo, as a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies, Until the Quiet Comes has the distinct feel of this nocturnal trip. From the twitching descent into a subconscious state and the out-of-focus time-ether of the journey that follows, the sound is an unhinged, yet elegant evolution of the melodic and rhythmic interplay that is woven into the DNA of Flying Lotus' aural personae. The album, featuring guests Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington, Niki Randa, Thundercat & Thom Yorke, is set for release on October 2. UTQC is fueled by FlyLo's first ever full US Tour, multiple videos, creative visual assets and massive support from his ever-growing group of press and fans. If indeed you blows who you is, as Louis Armstrong once famously said, then Stephen Bruner's bass is a mainline to the soul of a man whose DNA was transcribed from the stars onto staff paper. His Flying Lotus-produced debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse , offers both stone-cold skill and uncanny astrality, picking up where the pair left off on 2010's Cosmogramma and further distilling the jazz current running through that landmark Lotus release.

Kimbra is a New Zealand recording artist whose unique musical style draws from many different genres, often blending more modern electropop and R&B with classic jazz and soul musical elements. In 2013, Kimbra won 2 Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her song Somebody That I Used To Know with Gotye.

The Golden Echo is the second album by Kimbra. The ultimate modern pop record, The Golden Echo is ambitious, sophisticated, and complex, just like its creator. The New Zealand-born singer and songwriter wrote the songs in her bedroom studio on a farm in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she was surrounded by sheep and lambs owned by her landlady. The album is produced by Rich Costey and features several special guest artists, including Muse's Matt Bellamy, rapper Flying Lotus and singer John Legend.

The debut Brian Haas & Matt Chamberlain album Frames features 11 instrumental compositions that spiral through the tempered scale. A through-composed work for piano and percussion, it was written entirely by Haas, the internationally renowned pianist and founder of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Now based in Santa Fe, Haas wrote Frames as a suite, equally influenced by stride piano masters Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller; the early minimalist works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich; and the lush aesthetic of modernists James Blake, Flying Lotus and Nigel Godrich. The music is pastoral, intensely melodic and tells the story of an imagined human life.

"After several years of non-stop touring with my band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey I felt completely drained," explains Haas. "I was pulled to move to the high desert and mountains of Sante Fe; the space/distance from the road, the unearthly view from my house and the strange hum of my new surroundings inspired this music. What started as an exercise in all 12 keys turned into Frames."

Brian Haas has recorded 21 albums and toured the world for two decades with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, a band he started while a student at The University of Tulsa. Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Chamberlain is one of the most revered musicians of his time having toured and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Tori Amos, Bill Frisell and Frank Ocean among others.

Lapalux knew where and how his sound should change with a second album. As a result, Lustmore feels like a record as compulsively inspired and meticulously crafted as you're likely to hear in 2015. Lustmore is loosely based on the experience of hypnogogia, a transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep. Listeners familiar with his 2011 debut, Nostalchic, will know that Stuart Howard's woozy, infectious rhythms, enveloping textures and unfamiliarly familiar melodies conjure that territory perfectly. Lapalux attracted the direct attention of Brainfeeder label owner and electronic music icon Flying Lotus in 2010, and was quickly snapped up by the imprint. Acclaimed early EPs were followed by a number of remixes including Bonobo, Andreya Triana, Lianne La Havas amongst others, before his debut album Nostalchic arrived in 2011. On its release Mojo asserted that: "Lapalux has joined the ranks of contemporary electronica's finest, like FlyLo himself." The album was a high watermark, and a statement of intent by a young producer who was pushing electronic music forward.

    Every Color Of Darkness

It has been four years since Guillermo S. Herren released
anything significant from his most famous and respected
moniker, Prefuse 73 (though he did keep busy with live
shows, collaborations, and remixes). That's a long time for
virtually any artist, but it's an eternity for Herren, whose first
three Prefuse 73 albums dropped in the span of four years.
As if to make up for lost time, 2015 will see the release of
not one, but three major works from Prefuse 73. After
several albums that saw Herren progressively drift away
from the beatmaking prowess that made him synonymous
with emotionally resonant, damaged hip-hop, he's found
himself reinvigorated - thanks in large part to an emotionally
draining, creatively cashed few years. As Herren puts it, I've
come back to hyper focusing - immersing myself in the
sounds, rhythms, and formations that created Prefuse 73 in
the first place. Recently, I've found a new life in the whole
process of refining what I've created over the years as
"Prefuse". Right now I'm at my most confident and
    comfortable since 05/06.

It shows. The conclusion of a triptych of new recordings,
Every Color of Darkness basks in the darkest corners of
Prefuse 73's world, finding an eerie romanticism in manic
beats and damaged jazz. It's a record that showcases his
uncanny ability to excavate and exploit a source of light
    buried in pitch black.

For an artist who has played an undeniably integral role in
the careers of so many influential artists - from MF Doom
to Battles to Flying Lotus - it's not just refreshing to hear
    him return to top's revelatory.

On their sixth album VOIDS, Minus the Bear started with a blank slate, and inadvertently found themselves applying the same starting-from-scratch strategies that fueled their initial creative process.

Album opener Last Kiss immediately establishes the band's renewed fervor. An appropriately dizzying guitar line plunges into a propulsive groove before the chorus unfolds into a multi-tiered pop chorus. From there the album flows into Give & Take, a tightly wound exercise in syncopation that recalls the celebratory pulse of early Bear classics like Fine + 2 Pts while exploring new textures and timbres. Invisible is arguably the catchiest song of the band's career, with Jake Snider's vocal melodies and Knudson's imaginative guitar work battling for the strongest hooks. What About the Boat? reminds us of the math-rock tag that followed the band in their early years, with understated instrumentation disguising an odd-time beat. Erase, recalls the merging of forlorn indie pop and electronica that the band dabbled with on their early EPs, but demonstrates the Bear's ongoing melodic sophistication and tonal exploration. By the time the band reaches album closer Lighthouse, they've traversed so much sonic territory that the only appropriate tactic left at their disposal is a climactic crescendo, driven at its peak by Cory Murchy's thunderous bass.

Not since Planet of Ice's Lotus has the Bear achieved such an epic finale. All in all, it's an album that reminds us of everything that made us fall in love with Minus the Bear in the first place, and a big part of that appeal is the sense that the band is heading into uncharted territories.

While You Were Sleeping (On Sale)

JosÉ James has announced a his new album, While You Were Sleeping, his fifth studio album and his second album for Blue Note Records. While You Were Sleeping is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed R&B and jazz steeped No Beginning No End, and signals a new creative direction for the versatile singer-songwriter. The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, and was produced by JosÉ and Brian Bender.

That creative shift is heard in the rock edge of tracks like "EveryLittleThing" and "Anywhere U Go" and is evidenced in a change in JosÉ's band which adds guitarist Brad Allen Williams to the stellar line-up of keyboardist Kris Bowers, bassist Solomon Dorsey and drummer Richard Spaven. The influence of Jimi Hendrix can be heard throughout the album as much as R&B forefathers like Al Green. Special guests on While You Were Sleeping include vocalist Becca Stevens who duets with James on her song "Dragon," as well as trumpeter Takuya Kuroda who is featured on the cover of Green's classic "Simply Beautiful" that closes the album.

This album is a synthesis of everything I love about music," says JosÉ, "from contemporary artists like Frank Ocean, James Blake, and Junip to groundbreaking artists I grew up with like Nirvana, Radiohead, and Madlib. It's also a love letter to many late nights spent in East London clubs like Plastic People and Cargo, watching new movements unfold in electronic music. I want people to feel the joy of discovery that I experience night after night onstage, reaching for something new.

NPR Music raved about No Beginning No End, proclaiming "James makes utterly contemporary music," adding that he "skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strong awareness of a lineage that stretches from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls to Maxwell."

Pitchfork noted that "While he's always been one to try stuff out - he successfully collaborated with Flying Lotus on Blackmagic - on No Beginning No End he finds a way to make an eclectic approach feel unified and whole. With previous releases, he's earned his heroic acclaim in the tough, tried-and-trusted lanes of contemporary jazz. With No Beginning No End, he's built his own road out."

    Golden Skies

It speaks volumes for how long we've been waiting for the debut Brainfeeder album from Mono/Poly that when Flying Lotus first got in touch with him about doing something for the label, it was via Myspace. The wait, though, has been worth it. Specializing in a kind of beat-driven cosmic soundscape which he describes as "electronic-classical-alchemy music," Mono/Poly aka Charles Dickerson has drawn on the lessons he's learned from collaborating on last year's Thundercat album as well as the Flash Bang Grenada hip hop project with Busdriver and Nocando, and made a beautifully realized, endlessly expansive record.

From the first orchestral trills of "Winds of Change" you know you're in for something special. As the track builds the listener notices not only the content but also the production chops - this is a record which sounds exactly as big, glossy and up front as its creator wants it to. Rebekah Raff adds scintillating harp work to "Transit to the Gold Planet," but it's the way Dickerson integrates it and builds on it which is really special. "Ra Rise" sounds like sunbathing in space, Niki Randa's abstracted topline vocal warming you right through. Title track, "Golden Skies" uses a looping piano riff reminiscent of Bach, Thelonious Monk and Wu Tang on E, all at once, without sounding like any of them. Add sternum- thrumming bass to that and you know exactly what's what. "Alpha & Omega" does something clever with slowed down d&b licks and tweaked vocal snips. "Empyrean" features Mendee Ichikawa (of the band Free Moral Agents), an ethereal, ghostly presence. "Night Garden" sounds like a drive through the dark streets of an alternate LA. "Euphoria" uses a simple, military-style snare and then twines keyboard lines over it until it's lifted into the sky. Thundercat joins in on last track, "Gamma," and adds some perfectly-judged low-end riffing to anchor Dickerson's keyboard swirls.

Mono/Poly has been a name to watch since his debut, The George Machine, back in 2009. His 2011 EP release for Brainfeeder, Manifestations, was supported by artists as diverse as Radiohead and Erykah Badu and his work on Thundercat's Apocalypse established once and for all the quality of his productions. With Golden Skies he has laid down a marker to any other "beat maker" out there. Because with a genuine producer with this much talent, everyone else needs to aim a little bit higher - up towards the golden skies.

If you've ever desired a Pat Metheny Group greatest hits album, then Travels is for you. Compiled from the group's touring activities in 1982, this double set is a must-have. From the glittering lotus of melody that is "San Lorenzo" to the even more effusive "Phase Dance," the requisite classics are all here. We also get a curtailed, though no less epic, version of "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls," which here draws out like a long cinematic fade and throws the windows open wide to the band's boggling sonic purview. And one can hardly help but swoon from the dizzying heights reached by this live version of "Are You Going With Me?" Here the studio version seems but a memory on the path to glory, and finds exuberant life in what is perhaps Metheny's best solo on record. An absolute affirmation.

Yet the album's true value comes in the handful of songs exclusive to it. Through these we encounter softer sides of the PMG, each burnished like a different shade of leather. "The Fields, The Sky" is an outstanding place to start. Vasconcelos's unmistakable berimbau threads a supremely melodious backdrop, while Metheny is at once distant and nearby, winding a slow and organic retrograde around the fiery center within. Vasconcelos is also the voice of "Goodbye," a forlorn piece of sonic stationery across which Metheny inscribes a most heartbreaking letter toward a ripple of an ending. This pairs nicely with the title track, a laid-back photograph of Americana that is like a rocking chair on the back porch: lulling, and affording an unobstructed vista.

Similar strains await us in "Farmer's Trust," a slow plunge into an ocean of undriven roads gilded by the whispering of baby birds and the rustling of the leaves that hide them, and in the smoothly paved blacktops of the synth-driven "Extradition" and "Song for Bilbao." Each of these creeps along like wispy clouds over badlands, spun by keyboardist Lyle Mays into sunset. But it isn't all drawl, as drummer Dan Gottlieb proves in the invigorating "Straight On Red," throughout which he provides the perfect springboard for the masterful dialogues of Metheny and Mays.

Travels is what the PMG are all about, and this album shows us the collective at its finest hour. Those hearing the PMG for the first time will want to start with the studio sessions, and especially Offramp, from which Travels was in part drawn. That way, one can appreciate the enthusiasm of the crowds, and get at least a taste of what it must have felt like to be there among them. With a depth and cleanliness of sound that no band can match, the PMG were a force to be reckoned with, but also one so welcoming that reckoning need never have applied. Theirs is a space where nature and nurture shared the same pair of lungs. - Tyran Grillo
