    Handcrafted in the USA

The famous Manley Stingray stereo integrated amplifier has been renewed and refreshed. New for 2009 we present to you the Stingray iTube integrated tube amplifier with iPod dock and full featured RF and IR remote control.

The STINGRAY iTube is the next evolution from our acclaimed Stingray Integrated Amplifier, legendary in the hifi world since it swam from our labs in 1997. Originally conceived with particular attention paid to optimal component placement for the purity and symmetry of the signal path layout, the Stingray quickly became one of our best-selling products. The Stingray iTube retains the same basic tube circuitry and marvelous output transformers as the original with some important improvements:

An iPod dock has been integrated into the Stingray iTube as the 4th input source. The Manley iTube has been certified by Apple and officially sanctioned as a Made for iPod product. The Stingray's Remote Control commands the iPod PLAY/PAUSE and TRACK FORWARD/BACK controls.

The iPod's video output is available at the S-Video output jack located on the left side facia.

The high voltage tube energy storage has been increased vastly resulting in even more solid and coherent bass control and impact.

A headphone jack has been added to the right side facia. This jack re-routes the output from the speaker binding posts and mutes the Subwoofer output feed.

The Remote Control works with both Radio Frequency and InfraRed technologies. Using the remote in RF mode gives freedom from having to point and shoot. The RF remote is omnidirectional and works through walls and cabinets. IR capability is included for those with Universal Learning Remote Controls for consolidated integration into existing systems. The volume control, balance adjust, input switching, and iPod interface commands are all on the RF/IR Remote Control. Additionally user can perform the MUTE, DIM, INSERT and STANDBY commands with the Remote Control.

Each INPUT can be individually level trimmed to match and to optimize system gain staging of various input devices.

The fancy blue LED displays surrounding the INPUT and VOLUME encoder knobs can be dimmed down or turned off entirely, after a user-settable time period, or a screen-saver random light sequence can be selected. Speed and intensity of the Starlight mode can be tweaked to taste.

All custom user settings are hard written into memory when the unit is put into STANDBY mode and thus retained if power is later interrupted.

Individual sealed gold contact relays deliver the selected input into the volume control system before hitting the first 12AT7 input tubes. Following the mighty 6414 driver/phase splitter, the trusty EL84 output stage can be switched between either 20 watts of TRIODE power or 40 watts of Ultra Linear mode push-pull operation. Individual bias for each tube is easily adjusted using the trimpots and test points, conveniently located on the top surface of the amplifier. The Stingray's power supply is extra-rugged and stiff, a MANLEY hallmark. It swims with the sharks: fast, agile, fluid, and with consummate authority.

Post-volume SUBWOOFER OUTPUT allows easy hookup of outboard line-level driven active powered subwoofers. This output is after the volume control so that the subwoofer will track the volume level changes of the main speakers. The SUB OUTPUT is a line level and full frequency output that is AFTER the volume control so your powered subwoofer follows the same volume as your main speakers. These are unbalanced RCA jacks, line level. They feed the line inputs of your subwoofer, NOT the speaker jacks. A switchable TAPE LOOP is standard. The TAPE SEND is the output of the selected input before the volume control. The TAPE RETURN can also be used as a 5th line input if needed.

RECORD OUT (aka Tape OUT) is BEFORE the volume control so you can record whatever input you have selected without your listening level affecting the level going to your recorder. These are unbalanced RCA's. It is UNbalanced RCA's and UNbuffered so check out the input Z to your recorder to make sure it won't load down the Stingray main input while it is plugged in. Usually with unbuffered record outs we recommend you only plug in your recorder only when you are actually recording...

Tape LOOP: Also known as an INSERT point, the SEND or Tape Out comes off the selector switch as the Record Out option does going to your outboard EQ or Merlin BAM unit or tape recorder and then the signal returns (RETURN) to the Stingray in front of of the volume control so you can play tunes. A toggle switch selects whether the Tape LOOP (and whatever is plugged into the Tape Loop) is active or the signal goes straight through the Stingray as normal. If you have the Merlin BAM system, order your Stingray with the Tape LOOP option.

Need more than four inputs? Get a SKIPJACK line switcher and run it into this LOOP RETURN: The SKIPJACK is perfect for adding more inputs to anything. So if you use a SKIPJACK's 4 stereo inputs plus the Stingray's 4 stereo inputs you'll get 8 stereo inputs total. The way to do that is to consider the TAPE LOOP: you can bring the SKIPJACK output into the LOOP RETURN, enact the LOOP ACTIVE switch and use the 4 x SKIPJACK inputs feeding the LOOP RETURN with the SKIPJACK controlling source switching for those 4 inputs. Then if you put the Stingray's LOOP switch to BYPASS you will be working with the 4 x Stingray inputs selectable on the Stingray. That gives you 8 total stereo inputs.

Or if you do not want to use the TAPE LOOP feature (because you are using it for other purposes) or if you have an older Stingray without the TAPE LOOP, you can use a SKIPJACK to get up to 7 stereo line inputs by running the SKIPJACK's output into one of the Stingray's inputs.

NOTE: The SUBWOOFER OUT, RECORD OUT, and TAPE LOOP are all passive. So are the BALANCE and VOLUME controls also passive. No active electronics or buffers are used in these circuits. The RECORD OUT comes straight off the input select switch. So whatever source is selected will show up passed through at the TAPE OUT.

    iPod Compatibility:

iPod can play songs with the these sample rates, and with all compatible codecs

    • 8 kHz

    • 11.025 kHz

    • 16 kHz

    • 22.050 kHz

    • 32 kHz

    • 44.1 kHz

Most iPods (except the iPod Shuffle) will play WAV and AIFF files. The iPod will play up to 16 bit/48kHz files.

    iTunes Compatibility:

iTunes is not compatible with FLAC format files without a third party plugin.

iTunes does support 24/96 wav files. iPod won't play them, but iTunes does support them.

iTunes can in fact output 24/96 digitally, so in theory you could actually assemble a hi-rez music server based on iTunes, and use it to drive the DAC of your choice. Thus using your iPod docked on your Stingray iTube you can play WAV files which will yield similar audio quality to CD.

With the Stingray, the MANLEY team has struck a remarkably harmonious balance in design which satisfies the sonic desires of the audiophile and the rocker, the artist and the musician, the student and the master, the yin and the yang.

    Ruby Vroom

Ruby Vroom was Soul Coughing's 1994 debut album. The album's sound is a mixture of sample-based tunes (loops of Raymond Scott's Powerhouse on Bus to Beelzebub, Toots and the Maytals, Howlin' Wolf, The Andrews Sisters, and The Roches on Down to This, and a loop of sampler player Mark De Gli Antoni's orchestral horns on Screenwriter's Blues, among others). It also features guitar-based tunes like Janine, Moon Sammy, and Supra Genius and jazzy, upright-bass-fueled songs that often slyly quoted other material-the theme from Courageous Cat on Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago, Thelonious Monk's Misterioso on Casiotone Nation, and Bobby McFerrin's cover of Joan Armatrading's Opportunity on Uh, Zoom Zip.

    The Deluge

    White Colored Vinyl

Cascade and The Deluge are variations on the latest tape-loop
and delay composition from the inimitable William Basinski.
Cascade is the CD/Digital variant, and The Deluge is the vinyl LP
companion - pressed on exquisite 180 gram white colored vinyl.

In Cascade, a single ancient lilting piano tape loop repeats
endlessly carrying one along in its tessellating current. In The
Deluge, the same loop is processed through a series of feedback
loops of different lengths, creating a spiraling crescendo of
overtones that eventually fades away to silence. In the
denouement, a series of limpid piano loops leads to an urgent
orchestral theme that builds and gradually dies.

William Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer
who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in
NYC and most recently, California. Employing obsolete
technology and analogue tape loops, his haunting and
melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and
resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of
time. His epic 4-disc masterwork, The Disintegration Loops
received international critical acclaim and was one of Pitchfork's
Top Albums of the Decade. Installations and films made in
collaboration with artist-filmmaker, James Elaine have been
presented in festivals and museums internationally, and his
concerts are presented to sold-out crowds around the world.
Basinski was chosen by Music Director, Antony Hegarty to
create music for the Robert Wilson opera, The Life and Death of
Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the
Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe
in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of
The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been
performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queen Elizabeth
Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. Basinski is
currently touring the world in support of his latest works, Cascade
    and The Deluge.

The follow-up to 2011s Looping State of Mind, a press release for the album claims that it's darker and slower than past Field records, and the first from Axel Willner to be hardware only - no computers. Regular fans of The Field will note the change in the artwork - whereas past Field records have always used light backgrounds, this one's dark grey.

"When I started to work on Cupid's Head it was quite awkward", claims Willner. "I felt that I had nothing to put into a new album and I´m not the type to sit down and force something out in the studio. But then, after a few modest attempts, I got a first loop together and running which turned out (in a short time) to be 'No.No '. It was a revelation of sorts as making it felt new to me, and different, and that's when it all came out."

    A Shadow In Time

Pressed Onto Audiophile-Quality 100% Virgin Vinyl

    "Deeply melancholic and subdued,
music to embrace in the deep of a
    sleepless night." - The Quietus

    "Euphoric and transparent."
    - The Wire

    "There is something oddly
    otherworldly and plaintive about the
whole thing." - Drowned In Sound

World-renowned as one of experimental music's most vital and
impressionistic composers of the past few decades, William
Basinski's tape loop works have been especially influential,
particularly on the historic series, The Disintegration Loops,
where distorted, orchestral tape samples burrow deep into the
listener's psyche through meditative repetition. On his new album,
A Shadow In Time, Basinski plunges deeper than ever for the
plaintive, solitary eulogy to David Bowie, aptly titled "For David
Robert Jones." Conversely, the title track, "A Shadow In Time," is
a subtle, celestial escalation of melody and drone. The result is
one of the most truly transcendent pieces of music he has ever
committed to - or wrung from - tape.

    Your Ghost Keeps Finding Me

Levi Weaver's music doesn't fit in a box; you'll be hard pressed to find a genre that is enough to describe him. It's no wonder he's at ease traveling as he does touring. Levi, currently based out of Nashville, is a seasoned road warrior, covering 50k miles in a year. He plays as a one-man band intriguing audiences with his loop pedals, his dual mics, and a violin bow. But more than anything, he is a master story-teller with captivating lyrical integrity and gut-wrenching honesty. This follow-up to 2011's The Letters of Dr. Kurt Godel; his latest album, Your Ghost Keeps Finding Me.

    Anti-Skate Device - JMW-12

    For use with JMW-12

You will see three rubber rings on the straight shaft; these are used to set the anti-skating force.

The two rubber rings on the shaft with the grooves are used to set the height of the monofilament. Set the rubber ring on the lowest groove if it is not there already and slip the loop of monofilament over the grooved shaft. Push the second ring down to lock the loop in place on between the first and second groove. Try to keep the monofilament as level as possible but don't go crazy, it is not audible and causes no problem if it is slightly off level.

You can adjust the settings of the mechanism using the 1/16" Allen wrench provided. Adjust it so the arm can travel to the inner grooves of the record without the mechanism pulling it or causing it to skip grooves.

Minimal anti-skate force is needed do just enough to keep the image stabilized and the cantilever centered in the groove.

    Between The Needles And Nightfall

Between The Needles And Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bend toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.

For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang, Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Illa Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.

    Street Faerie

Produced & Arranged By Lenny Kravitz

Available On Vinyl For The First Time!

Street Faërie is the first full-length album recorded by former Different World actress and Lenny Kravitz musical protÉgÉ, Cree Summer (1999). Summer, who is Neo-Pagan and a political and human rights activist, wove themes of racism, romantic liaisons, and spirituality into the lyrics of guitar-heavy pop and folk songs.

Summer addresses both her Canadian Indian roots and her oneness with earth (covering both the personal and universal obligations of her singer-songwriter role) on her debut album. Producer Kravitz keeps his usual retrogazing to a minimum here, allowing Street Faërie to breathe in its own organic surroundings and to develop a style more reserved than on any of his own recordings.

On this album, Lenny Kravitz is credited with the following impressive list of musical duties: bass, guitar, percussion, arranger, drums, harpsichord, organ, programming, tambourine, vocals, background vocals, clavinet, producer, mellotron, cowbell, horn arrangements, mixing, finger cymbals, drum loop and cabasa.

    Garnier: AF 0490

It started with Chicago. Then, Manchester. For nearly three decades, Laurent Garnier has urged himself to create on the cutting edge of dance music. Beyond the turntables and studio, Garnier moves between genres and performance techniques with the aim of continuously challenging himself. Pick any moment from his musical journey, and it's easy to see this creative momentum: there was the Hacienda in the late '80s, his time spent in America exploring house, the techno of his label F Communications and his entry into the realm of jazz. I never want to be an old artist playing my old tracks just to please the older crowd, he says. I don't think that's healthy. (RA) Laurent Garnier is now an undeniable force that is making the planet dance. Last summer (2013) Laurent Garnier met with Jerome Derradji over dinner before his long awaited return at the decks in Chicago for SmartBar. Longtime friends, Laurent and Jerome talked about the possibility of releasing some of his new productions under the name Garnier. A new venture for the veteran Dj and producer, that will see him release a series of 12"s for labels such as 50 Weapons and more . "AF 0490" is the first release in the series and showcases Garnier at his best. Three tracks that pay their respect to the heroes of Trax, Dancemania and to the Chicago sound they helped create without any misplaced nostalgia. "Bang (The Underground Doesn't Stop)" is a dancefloor anthem, magnificent and pure Chicago circa 1998. "Boom (Chakolak)" takes you way back to the Southside with its gritty "footwork" 909 kicks, snares and vocal loops, massive! "Beat (Da BoxX) is a pure Garnier, Dancemania inspired techno monster. The loop is finally complete, Garnier can now hop on flight AF 0490 direct from Paris to Chicago to Bang The Box once more. Tell your friends, 2014 looks like it's going to be the year of the Garnier.

    Artificial Dance

The story of electronic music pioneer K. Leimer continues with a focus on his auteurist studio project Savant. Compiling the standalone album, 1983's The Neo Realist (At Risk), with Savant's debut 12" and a grip of compilation and unreleased tracks, Artificial Dance documents Leimer's complete collaborative venture into the unpredictable realities of music, exploring the gulf between what is expected by its creators and what is eventually - and eternally - committed to tape. Savant was designed by Leimer to tap into entropic truths, asserting an uncaged counterpart to the loop-based minimalism he produced in isolation (recently surveyed on RVNG Intl.'s A Period of Review (1975-1983)). Aligning himself with the Cage-ean principles of chance operations and musical contingency, Savant was a band sans jam. Allegorically, a blindfolded collaboration whose happenstance source music Leimer would sample, loop and sculpt at will. Leimer was creatively autonomous to the point of being a persona absentia in Seattle's 80s rock scene. Unconcerned by social status, Leimer enlisted musicians from experimental and post-punk groups in the area to come record as Savant at his home studio, Tactical. Among them were ambient composer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine - the experimental music publication), Jim and David Keller of the New Flamingos, and their bandmate Alex Petit. Others, like Roy Finch and Dennis Rea, came from a similar orbit. Even with these musicians at his beck and call, Leimer implemented a disarming musical strategy. Savant would have no fixed line up and often musicians would be asked to play instruments far outside their fortÉ. Leimer would however give loose rhythmic direction for the musicians to develop spontaneously against click-tracks. When the performance locked in with Leimer listening at the controls, he'd capture it to tape. These moments became the soul of Savant and the combustive elements that would variegate its timbres. Savant tonally operates in a space between This Heat's dark primitivism and the found sound collage of Brian Eno & David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. These analogies are simply stylistic, as the narrative behind The Neo-Realist's production makes clear Leimer was concocting via more alchemic means, avoiding genre aspirations by looking for accidental moments of musical intrigue and discovery. Leimer explains this process in the collection's liner notes: "I was looking for flaws, for faults to act as the stand-out features of the music." Far from a provisional stab at avant-garde sensibilities, Savant represents Leimer's repudiation of ambient music's passive side. Artificial Dance embodies a perfectionist's family portrait of outrÉ musicians conforming to Leimer's nonconformist musical ethos. Fitting for its name, Leimer created conditions for asocial brilliance with Savant, materializing an outward offering from an inward studio and a collaboration of audacious invention.

    The Naive Shaman

Richard Youngs has been making music for over two decades. The Naive Shaman, released in dual format (cd and lp), is a deeply personal work. Created on a computer at home, it is a high density digital song cycle driven by heavy, heavy electric bass guitar.

The opening Life On A Beam combines a modal vocal line with throbbing sonics and non-linear percussion. Elsewhere a plaintive voice threads itself through frosted atmospherics and we hear Richard's first recorded kazoo work since 1992's New Angloid Sound. At the core of the album is Sonar In My Soul, a bass loop on to which are collaged strangulated guitar, singing and more singing. The track climaxes in a hollered plea for unity. The second half of the set contrasts Once It Was Autumn, a succintly crafted dub chant, with the epic Summer's Edge II, whose sprawling 16 minutes anchor a floating vocal melody and free-flowing drums with fuzzed bass octaves.

At a time when he has increased his commitment to live performance, Richard has--paradoxically--produced an album that explores recording technology as an instrument, a work where song is modulated by sound. By critics and true music fans everywhere, Youngs has been deemed the king of the progressive minimalists. He has now released seven full-length records in addition to multiple collaborations with other artists such as Makoto Kawabata (of Acid Mothers Temple fame), Simon Wickham-Smith and Neil Campbell.

    I'll Be Lightning

Indie wunderkind Liam Finn has burst onto the musical landscape with the force and presence of an artist twice his age. The 23-year-old New Zealander plays nearly every instrument on his first solo release I'll Be Lightning, a responsibility he doesn't relinquish when performing live. During his raucous yet intimate performances Liam utilizes effects pedals to create, sample and loop bass, guitar, drums, vocals and even Theremin. Liam's sound ranges from foggy and intimate to fuzzed-out garage but melodies are always the order of the day. On I'll Be Lightning, Liam has translated the shambolic energy of his live show onto vintage 2-inch tape, yielding a studio album of frightening power and endless hooks.

The vinyl version of I'll Be Lightning will include 5 bonus tracks not on the actual album, as well as a special edition CD (available only in the vinyl packaging) featuring the album plus the vinyl-only bonus tracks. The LP is sold out, but you may still be able to find it in your local record store.

    Fig. 5

In America, we have monuments instead of mythology: bright obelisks and classical statuary erected as perpetually new in the place of the perpetually old. This is, after all, the New World; we dedicate these talismans against ruin across the landscape almost as if to keep history itself at bay, to keep time from catching up with us. Underfoot are bones and detritus, though, the debris of the little nameless events that are excluded from American history. It's all a rather shallow grave when you think about it.

Jackie-O Motherfucker's unprecedented Fig. 5, the group's first CD release, presents a dim and unsettling archaeology of American music. Released in the wake of the American century, it's the first unapologetically brilliant piece of experimental music I've heard this year. Somehow constructed bereft of any postmodern irony, Fig. 5 transforms a commanding grasp on the celebrated tributaries of American music-- jazz, Appalachian folk, soul, African-American spirituals, West coast surf-rock, Protestant hymns, Louisville post-rock, bluegrass, electronic noise-- into an autochthonous gospel. Jackie-O Motherfucker-- two multi-instrumentalists, Tom Greenwood and Jef Brown and the cadre of eclectic talents with whom they surround themselves-- abandoned the remix loop jazz-fusion of their first two albums (available only as LPs) and literally emerged from the basement and the soil with a masterpiece.
