    Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited edition 180g LP opens up the soundstages, clears previously muddled midrange frequencies, and places the imaging of the various country-tuned instruments into clear focus. For the first time, listeners can hear just how much of himself Costello invests in the vocal performances, while the Attractions dont miss a beat, particularly pianist Steve Nieve and guest musician John McFee. Moreover, the strings (when employed) take on new life, and the records cover art, a take-off on Kenny Burrells Midnight Blue, is faithfully reproduced.


    At the time of the albums recording in 1981, Costello was admittedly emotionally shattered. The title of the effort isnt merely coincidental. Feeling dejected and disenchanted, the vocalist had been put through the ringer: His pop stardom yielded one incredible record after another, but Costellos marriage was in tatters, his behavior deplorable, and his reputation tarnished by a famous drunken incident that shamed him for decades. In addition, he chose to follow his string of original LPs up with the soul- and R&B-minded Get Happy, a creative masterwork that nonetheless caused some of his mainstream fans to believe hed abandon his hit-making pedigree.


    So he did what any self-respecting, astute musician would want to do: Cut a country and western record steeped in heartbreak, fragility, sadness, despair, and beer-glass-raising spirit. Largely informed by the stacks of country LPs he bought in used shops during U.S. tours, and in the ideal frame of mind, Costello sought out not to make standards such as Sweet Dreams, Too Far Gone, Honey Hush, and Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down his own but to put a unique spin on the darkness, surprise, soulfulness, foreboding, and authenticity that they contain within.


    With each note, Costello succeeds and exceeds expectations, turning in versions that sound both old and new. Such timelessness, and the confluence of contemporary and traditional, distinguishes Almost Blue from nearly every other country tribute album made by pop/rock artists before and since. Costello and the Attractions embody the deep sentiments attached to these weeping ballads, tear-jerking lullabies, honky-tonk rave-ups, and playful shuffles in an incredibly convincing manner. Producer George Sherrill, famous for working with the likes of Tammy Wynette, George Jones, and Marty Robbins, and brought on board specifically for the project, frames the music with the perfect blend of grit and professionalism.

    In the course of several months, Run River North went from playing a handful of hometown shows in Los Angeles to
    performing to an audience of millions on late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! It was an explosive trajectory for the sextet,

    The Sacred Heart Sessions

    The Lowest Pair features the duel banjo picking of Kendl Winter and
    Palmer T. Lee. Draped in Kendl's high lonesome harmonies and Palmer's
    Midwest croon, their debut release, 36¢, (Team Love Records) was
    hailed by many outlets and American Songwriter praised their earnest,
    earthy songcraft. Team Love will release their
    sophomore album, The Sacred Heart Sessions.


    Arkansas-born and now homesteading in Olympia, Washington, Kendl
    Winter sprouts alfalfa beans in mason jars in the back of the tour van and
    spreads her songs across the country Johnny Appleseed style. Kendl
    brings to The Lowest Pair her wonderfully weaving poetry of song, old
    and new, and a voice somewhere between Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent
    with a little Olympia twist. Palmer T. Lee who hails from Minneapolis was
    nineteen years old when he inherited a couple of banjos and discovered
    he could reassemble them into his dream instrument. Former front man
    for the much loved high energy bluegrass band The Boys n' the
    Barrels, Palmer's songs are distilled into the warm sweet sounds of his
    percussive wordplay and the melodic interludes of his own unique style
    played on a pieced together banjo.


    After nearly a year of traveling the country playing clubs, hotels, house
    shows, back yards and street corners, they found their way back up to
    Minnesota, this time to Duluth where they sat down to record the followup
    to 36¢.   Linking up with Tom Fabjance at an old church seemed like
    the perfect way to expand on their sound without diluting their original
    magical formula. The Sacred Heart Sessions is an album that allows the
    listening to enter the space that surrounds its creation. One can virtually
    feel the walls and vaulted ceiling of the old wooden church rising up,
    creating a natural reverb and warming the air.


    Be it Kendl's punk roots, her admiration for the traditional American
    songbook, or the gravitational pull she sensed drawing her to Olympia,
    it's her combining these talents and creative impulses with Palmer's
    Midwestern charm, the long winters spent listening to a steady diet of
    Townes Van Zandt and John Hartford and the strange moment of fate
    that left him with two inherited banjos as a young man; this combination
    has resulted in a uniquely original sound that is The Lowest Pair.

    Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early-'50s, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known. The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single "Heartbreak Hotel" forever etched "The King Of Rock And Roll" trademark to his name.


    Over the next three decades, Elvis Presley would release dozens of hit albums and tons of smash singles, spend time in the Army, star in over 35 top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all time. In 1968, his career ignited even further thanks to his Elvis TV Special on NBC and another series of hit singles and career making albums like his country soul smash From Elvis In Memphis.


    As the '70s began, Elvis was selling out shows all around the country and began to plan out a series of groundbreaking performances in Hawaii. His show on January 14, 1973 was broadcast live via satellite across over forty countries and would become the most watched televised event by a solo artist in history. It's been said that over one billion viewers enjoyed his incredible concert! The show was choreographed and staged like nothing ever before and featured a multitude of musicians, the Hawaiian Islands, the appreciative and excited audience, and of course, The King Of Rock And Roll himself Elvis Presley.


    The multi-platinum Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite set also was a blockbuster as it hit the top #1 spot on the charts in 1973, making this one of the biggest albums of his career as well as one of the most revered live concert albums of all time proving once again Elvis Presley's career was unlike any other in music history. This live masterpiece takes off with the Memphis blues rocker "See See Rider" and his huge '70 hit "Burning Love." He follows these up with his tip of the hat to his friends The Beatles with the soulful balladry of "Something." More of Elvis' own favorites follow with the Hank Williams' ballad "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and his rockin' interpretation of Chuck Berry's classic "Johnny B. Goode."


    The album also features a nice helping of solid Elvis top chart hits like "Blue Suede Shoes," "Hound Dog," "A Big Hunk Of Love" and his smash single interpretation of James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues." As a tribute to his Hawaii audience, the ever thoughtful King Of Rock And Roll closed the show with his masterpiece "Can't Help Falling In Love" from his film Blue Hawaii. In total, the album showcases a very historic Elvis Presley performance which has truly gone onto become the definitive live concert album in his amazing catalog of hit gold and platinum recordings.

    Beulah. It's a small, complicated word with a tangle of meanings.


    It's the title of John Paul White's new album, his first in nearly a decade, a remarkably and assuredly diverse collection spanning plaintive folk balladry, swampy southern rock, lonesome campfire songs, and dark acoustic pop. Gothic and ambitious, with a rustic, lived-in sound, it's a meditation on love curdling into its opposite, on recrimination defining relationships, on hope finally filtering through doubt.


    Beulah is also a White family nickname. "It's a term of endearment around our house," White explains, "like you would call someone 'Honey.' My dad used to call my little sister Beulah, and I call my daughter Beulah. It's something I've always been around."


    Beulah is also something much loftier. For the poet and painter William Blake, Beulah was a place deep in the collective spiritual unconscious. "I won't pretend to be the smartest guy in the world," says White, "but I dig a lot of what he's written. Beulah was a place you could go in your dreams. N D yourself. It wasn't a place you could stay, but you came back to the world in a better state."


    And perhaps the music on this album originated in that "pleasant lovely Shadow where no dispute can come." According to White, the songs came to him unbidden-and not entirely welcome. "When these songs started popping into my head, I had been home for a while and I was perfectly happy. I wasn't looking for songs. I didn't know whether any would pop back in my head again, and I was honestly okay with that. I'm a very happy father and husband, and I love where I live. I love working with artists for a label that I think is doing good work."


    Far from the grind and glamour of Nashville-where he worked for years as a working songwriter before stepping into the spotlight himself-White settled in his hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a wellspring of gritty Southern rock and soul since the 1960s. Together with Alabama Shakes keyboard player Ben Tanner and Shoals native Will Trapp, he founded and runs Single Lock Records, a local indie label that has released records by some of the Yellowhammer State's finest, including Dylan LeBlanc, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and legendary songwriter and keyboard player Donnie Fritts. The label is based in a small ranch house a stone's throw from White's own home, which would come in handy when those songs started invading his head.


    "Honestly, I tried to avoid them, but then I realized the only way I was going to get rid of them was if I wrote them down. I got my phone out and I'd sing these little bits of melody, then put it away and move on. But eventually I got to a place where it was a roar in my head, and that pissed me off." Due to his experiences as a gun-for-hire in Nashville, White was reluctant to romanticize the creative process, to turn it into a spiritual pursuit. "Then one day I told my wife I think I'm going to go write a song. She was as surprised as I was. I went and wrote probably eight songs in three days. It was like turning on a faucet."


    Most artists would kill for such a downpour, but White was wary of the consequences. He knew that writing songs would lead to recording them, which would result in releasing them, and that means touring and leaving home for weeks at a time. "As soon as I write a song, I start thinking what other people might think of it. I've talked to friends about this: What is it about us that makes us do that? Why can't I just sit on my back porch and sing these songs out into the ether? I don't have an answer for it yet, but I think it's just part of who I am. I need that reaction. I need to feel like I'm moving someone in a good way or in a bad way. I need to feel like there's a connection."


    White threw himself into the project, no longer the reluctant songwriter but a craftsman determined to make the best album possible-to do these songs justice. He cut several songs at the renowned FAME Studios in his hometown, where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, the Allmans, the Osmonds, Bobbie Gentry, Arthur Conley, and Clarence Carter recorded some of their most popular hits.


    One product of those sessions is "What's So," which introduces itself by way of a fire-andbrimstone riff, as heavy as a guilty conscience-the kind of riff you wouldn't be surprised to hear on a Sabbath album. But White's vocals are gritty and soulful, a product of the Shoals, almost preacherly as he sings about earthly and eternal damnation: "Sell your damn soul or get 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com SACKS A CO. N D right with the man, keep treading water as long as you can," he exhorts the listener. "But before you do, you must understand that you don't get above your raisin'." It's the heaviest moment on the record, perhaps the darkest in White's career.


    At the other end of the spectrum is "The Martyr," one of the catchiest tunes White has ever penned. The spryness of the melody imagines Elliott Smith wandering the banks of the Tennessee River, yet the song is shot through with a pervasive melancholy as White wrestles with his own demons. "Keep falling on your sword, sink down a little more," he sings over a dexterous acoustic guitar theme. This is not, however, a song about some unnamed person, but rather a pained self-diagnosis: "These are the wounds that I will not let heal, the ones that I deserve and seem so real." White knows he's playing the martyr, but he leaves the song hauntingly open-ended, as though he isn't sure what to do with this epiphany beyond putting it in a song.


    The rest of Beulah was recorded in the Single Lock offices/studio near White's home. "I can be more relaxed about the process. We can all just sit there and talk about records or baseball without feeling like someone's standing over our shoulders. That's a big deal to me, not to feel pressured. And I'm only about twenty yards away from home, so I can walk over and throw a baseball with my kids or make dinner with my wife."


    Some of the quieter-but no less intense-songs on Beulah were created in that environment, including the ominously erotic opener "Black Leaf" and the Southern gothic love song "Make You Cry." As he worked, a distinctive and intriguing aesthetic began to grow clearer and clearer, one based in austere arrangements and plaintive moods. These are songs with empty spaces in them, dark corners that could hold ghosts or worse. "There were certain moments when Ben and I would finish up a song, listen back to it, and think how in the world did we get here. But that's just what the songs ask for. These are the sounds in my head. This is the sound of me thinking and living and breathing and doing."


    Once White had everything assembled and sequenced, it was time to give the album a title, to wrap everything up for the listener. Beulah stuck-not only because of family history or Blake, but because White realized that making music was his own trip to Beulah. "If you had to sum up what music is for most people in this world, it's that. It's that escape. It's that refuge. You go there and you come back and you use that to help you with your life. You always have that as a place to go."

    The standard route for popular music, songwriter to publisher to label to artist, survived the '60s only to be overrun by a generation of folkies agog at giants strumming in the rearview. They were inspired by iconoclasts from Charley Patton to Woody Guthrie, artists entirely reliant on one guitar, one voice, and ones own words. But our heroes were not the agrarian luddites of yesterfolk. They cheered when Dylan plugged in and were rapt when Lennon and McCartney modernized songcraft, making the studio process justas important to song creation as setting the chords and words down.


    The resultant work wasnt as readily reduced to words on paper as the Broadside pages that preceded them, success relied heavily on the way these songs were captured and transmitted: the sound of the room, the turn of a phrase, the odd way a piano got miced, or the way a guitar fell perfectly out of tune. As long as the end result was somber, dark, and meditative, it didnt matter if it was a conscious choice or a happily unhappy accident.


    Each of our lonesome heroes began his journey from a wildly divergent place. Some of the stops may been similar, but each was made in different ways at different times for different reasons. All these travelers somehow found their ultimate destination on this disc. From artists who never played one professional gig to those that never stopped playing professionally, whose only shared experience is a journey set upon with no known end, sharing their thoughts, emotions and dreams with a lonely few along the way.
