    Cosmic Logic

Los Angeles, California-based duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis A.K.A.
Peaking Lights are thankfully back and set to release their new album Cosmic
Logic via Weird World Records / Domino Recording Co.

Cosmic Logic is a heady brew of dub, kraut, minimal house, disco and pop
influence all rendered in the inimitable Peaking Lights fashion. Recorded by
the band themselves in a couple of LA studios and then mixed by Matt Thornley of DFA, Cosmic Logic follows the outer space pop explorations of 2012's
critically acclaimed Lucifer and 936 before that. This time around, however,
the band have gone for a more concise, lean approach - abandoning some of
their psychedelic sprawl for a more pure pop experience.

Cosmic Logic opens with the guitar and drum-heavy "Infinite Trips," a song
which Coyes says is "an homage to the opening track 'Der Song von
Mandelay' on The Flying Lizards debut album - we wanted to come in from
left field." The mood of the record takes a sharp turn when the sputtering
drum machines and spacey keyboards kick in on "Telephone Call," a song that
tucks the cosmic into the quotidian. "It was influenced by ideas in the
Carpenters' version of the 1977 cover of Klaatu's 'Calling Occupants of
Interplanetary Craft,'" Coyes said. To which Dunis added: "It's about keeping
an open mind to cosmic messages that can come from anywhere."

The album traces a singular trajectory through Peaking Lights' current sonic
palette, full of coruscating synths and percolating drum machines. "I think
Aaron's rhythms are definitely influenced by whatever is on his mind:
reggae, dancehall, funk, Afrobeat, disco, etc." Dunis said of the beats that
power the album. Cosmic Logic both looks to other musical cultures as well
as up to the stars for inspiration, and is a beacon in dark times, a reminder to
be at once mindful of the terrestrial and the celestial, to be open-eared and
    open-minded.

Or, as Dunis sings on "Telephone Call": "Use your heart and not your ears."

    Nightmare Logic (Awaiting Repress)

The second crushing, soul-mangling, neck bustin' album from Texas hardcore thrashers: Power Trip. Quite possibly the best thrash album you will have heard in the last decade. IMMENSE, MAMMOTH, MASSIVE. Recorded by Arthur Rizik (Inquisition), mastered by Joel Grind (Poison Idea, Toxic Holocaust) and features cover art by Paolo Girard. POWER TRIP is a real band like no other. Their raw energy, musical proficiency, perfect song structure, rich tones, fierce riffs, persecution, and collective attitude have seeded them as one of the most prolific underground staples in the US metal, punk, and hardcore scenes.

A more melancholic take on Brian Eno's "Baby's On Fire",

Bells of Paonia is a lush and pretty fuzz-guitar drone with

With surreal nightmares, glistening pop tempered by sinister
undertones and even unsettling experimentalism, The Fresh & Onlys'
fifth album, House of Spirits is the San Francisco quartet's most
focused and most experimental yet. The material gestated during
vocalist Tim Cohen's isolated stay on an Arizonan horse ranch where
he documented dreams in a bedside notebook. The resultant songs are
by turns pristine, feverish, and bizarre, as The Fresh & Onlys returned
to Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco with Phil Manley (Trans Am)
to recast the textures, leaps of logic and evocative character of
    Cohen's dreams into songs.

Wayne Shorter made a major impact on the Jazz world during 1963-64. He left Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to become a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and he recorded Night Dreamer and Juju as a leader for Blue Note. Speak No Evil is even notable than those two gems, for Shorter had developed into not only one of the most original tenor-saxophonists of the 1960?s but also one of its most vital composers. With superb playing by Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, Shorter introduces six unique compositions including Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, Speak No Evil and Infant Eyes. Hubbard and Hancock consistently raise the temperature with fiery solos. Shorter's playing and writing are both beyond description, utilizing a logic all his own which, over time, has become a major influence in Modern Jazz. Throughout Speak No Evil, Shorter creates brilliant new music like no one else.

    While We're Young - Soundtrack

While We're Young is Noah Baumbach's sparkling follow-up to his 2012 hit Frances Ha. No film has better captured the weird, upended logic of urban sophisticates: the older ones embrace their iPads and
Netflix, the young ones crave vinyl records and vintage VHS tapes.

The film follows Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as Josh and Cornelia, a childless New York married couple in their mid-forties. As their other friends all start having children, the couple gravitates toward a young hipster couple named Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). He's an aspiring documentary filmmaker, avocation Josh already has. Soon the older couple begins enjoying the energy they feel hanging out with the younger generation, but eventually Josh begins to suspect his new best friend might not be as straightforward
    and trustworthy as he thought.

The soundtrack is filled with classics such as Paul McCartney's "1985," Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)," Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger," or David Bowie's "Golden Years" just to name a few. The score to the film comes courtesy of LCD Soundsystem's own James Murphy.

"This may just be Sufjan Stevens' Magnus Opus.
Forget Michigan, Seven Swans, Illinois . . . Enjoy Your
Rabbit is a masterclass in doing everything that logic
tells music not to do." - Sputnik Music

"Sufjan Stevens proves himself adept of both long and

scratches and ambient drones; blips, bleeps and

"The underlying guiding principle is wide-eyed
exploration that fills nearly every track with a sense of
    playfulness." - All Music

Originally released in 2001 before Michigan and Illinois,
Sufjan Steven's Enjoy Your Rabbit foretells his 2010
electronic Age of Adz. Though overlooked by many,
there are fans who regard Enjoy Your Rabbit as
    Sufjan's greatest work.

Departing from the singer-songwriter format of his
debut Asthmatic Kitty Records album, A Sun Came,
Rabbit is a collection of fourteen colorful instrumental
compositions combining Sufjan's noted gift for melody
with electronic sounds to create an unusually playful
and human- not to mention humane- electronic
experience. Great for dancing, driving, writing, cooking,

    Noctilucence

Noctilucence is a new 12 recorded between in 2013 and 2014 between Los Angeles, California,
and Cleveland, Ohio. The term "noctilucence" comes from "noctilucent clouds", the name
given to clouds which, for some reason, emit a brilliant vibrance at night. On this recording
we find our subject diving into the electric waters of the night sky, in long drives across the
vast deserts of America. It's a recording about the discovery and understanding of the shadow,
entrance to the realm not controlled by the light of day, or the logic of reason. It's about
confronting nocturnal terrors and all of those things that go bump in the night.
Understanding that the ancient archetypes which watch over us don't flinch, and stand firm
across the spell of time. On Along The Way we sought the Macrobes for guidance, and on
Noctilucence we see them taking real shape. Opening with a mantra to the perpetual
regeneration of the spirit of love, crying out for new levels of confidence and consciousness to
emerge from the human race, Noctilucence is a deep stare into the infinite eye of the
shimmering night sky of the future, and all it holds in its gaze.

Composer Daniel Pemberton follows up his movie score for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with not one but three different scores for Steve Jobs, the new Danny Boyle film starring Michael Fassbender as Apple's controversial visionary leader.

"There is not one side of music that could reflect Jobs' personality. There is a classical side to him, a rebellious side to him, a technical side to him, a soft side to him, and a cold side to him", Pemberton explains. The movie is therefore divided into three acts, each with a different musical theme.

The first act "Vision" is set in 1984 when Steve Jobs had his vision of what personal computing could bring to the world. Then there is "Revenge" in 1988 when he sets up this company pretty much to get revenge on the people he thought had betrayed him at Apple. Finally, "Wisdom" is the climax with his own personal realization of what his goals in life have been and what has been slightly misguided.

Pemberton wanted to have a sound that captured the times so for the first act he used synthesizers from the early '80s. The third act is performed on a Mac computer using Logic - modern technology which wouldn't be available weren't it for Apple. For Act II, he used "the oldest computer that still exists, which is the orchestra. You give them information which is notation and they interpret that in a way better than any piece of technology has managed to beat.

    Flying Fantasy

By embedding both new age and noise-oriented
electronic themes into his pastoral pieces, Turnquist
unites disparate traditions and ideals, essentially
employing sonic counterweights to construct 57 minutes
that are as surprisingly dynamic as they are perfectly
    beautiful.
    - PITCHFORK (8.2)

New York's Turnquist is masterful. His right hand
technique is as orchestral as Nick Drake's, sending rivulets
of steel sadness out across the water, but applied to a
minimalist logic with the weight of early Philip Glass or
    Steve Reich
    - UNCUT

Turnquist layers his six and twelve string guitar
instrumentals with electronic drones, piano and vibes.
This first widely available release is a filmic beauty, its
chilly pastoralism distinguished by the physicality of his
    playing
    - MOJO

Another bravura outing from Turnquist that is, in its own
    unassuming way, a triumph
    - TEXTURA

As an accomplished 12-string guitarist/composer, Alexander Turnquist was naturally
alarmed when the ulnar nerve in his left hand seized up in 2013, but after a surgical procedure he gratefully started the process of learning to play guitar again. His recovery was
cut short when not long after the surgery he was hospitalized with meningitis. Though his
recovery is ongoing, and he continues to struggle with a weakened immune system and
memory loss, he was inspired to soldier on, rather than being deterred by his physical
    struggles.

Turnquist's latest full-length Flying Fantasy confirms the idea that out of great hardship
can come great art. As he wrote the material for the new album it became clear that his
sensitivity had sharpened, his empathy magnified, and his sense of purpose blossomed.
The unfortunate circumstances he endured ostensibly forced his metamorphosis from a
remarkable guitar player to a truly great composer. Much like the butterflies that adorn
the album cover, he seems to have changed form and taken flight.

The album opens with the sparse harmonics of House of Insomniacs, which are soon
joined by lush swells of vibes, cello, and even wordless vocals. On the tracks that follow,
Turnquist continues to make use of this dynamic sonic pallet, even adding organ, piano,
marimba, steel drums, violin, and french horn to the mix. From Red Carousel, which was
inspired by Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, to the somber lilt of the love
song Wildflower, to the truly arresting title track Flying Fantasy which uses only 4 open
strummed guitars and loops of damaged tape and wire recorders, every note vibrates with
life as Turnquist ushers us though his intoxicatingly colorful worlds of sound.

What I Became (Discontinued) (On Sale)

If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine has released that definitely shouldnt be filed under a group name (Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone. The gout of LPs, cassettes, CDRs, singles and 10-inches emerging from Maximum Arousal Farm has dwarfed the output of everyone cept maybe Sunburned or Thurston. Regardless, there can never be enough MV LPs in the world, and What I Became is a beaut. Most of it is as solo as Satan, apart from percussionist Jeremy Earl (of Woods fame), whose presence is sometimes felt more than heard. Erika EE Elder and Mike Muskox Smith also pop up on a track, but the general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick Slim.

As usual, MVs tunes and procedures beggar easy generification. Elements of deep forest psychedelia brush against Crazy Horse guitar / vocal flourishes that explode to reveal volk-based form mayhem at its hickiest. My particular fave here is PK Dick, a paean to nth dimensional logic in the form of a Swedish psych-folk readymade. My son prefers the haunted-Harvest-vibe (his words) of Ave. B. My wife goes for the Seventh Sons approach offered by Sweet Little Indian Girl (always a fave with the ladies). And my daughter nods in the direction of Continuing the Good Life for reasons she will not explain. I suspect its the hooty vocals, reminding her of teen pop giants like The Shins and Of Montreal, but she aint sayin. All this just goes to show that What I Became is a fun album for the whole family. It will soothe your savage breasts. It will turn your evil mother-in-law into a porpoise. It will wash yr dishes and darn yr socks. Darn them! Motherfucker, who else would do that? Nobody, Jack. Cept MV. This guy has the magic touch. And it has never been displayed better than here. Just get the fucking rec. Or prepare to go sockless. Kind of a no-brainer, eh?

If youve heard Daniel Martin-McCormicks name recently, it would have been either in association with his disco / punk / echo band Mi Ami, or as Sex Worker on the Not Not Fun label, or as Ital on NNFs sister label 100% Silk. Raised in Washington, DC, Martin-McCormick has a history in the citys hardcore scenehe was in Dischord Records band Black Eyes in the early 2000sbut was also making dance-inspired tracks during the same period, coming from a very different angle than the average guy with a copy of Logic Pro and a working knowledge of dance musics history.

Martin-McCormicks music is a stranger thing. Hive Mind, his debut full-length under the Ital moniker, uses houses easygoing 4/4 structure as a kind of camouflage for more out-there sonic explorations, subverting expectations, seeking the links between dubs space- and sound-bending, industrials unsettling sonics and the effects and black holes of minimal at its weirdest. The album has a sculptured feel: sounds twist in space while melodies pitch-shift in an unsettling way, voices fade in and out, nothing is ever allowed to settle comfortably, everything vibrates.

Opener Doesnt Matter (If You Love Him) sounds a bit like Tackhead if they had made house music, using a flickering and confidently repeated phrase over a lumbering drum and bass line, introducing swirling and bombing synths into the mix once the secret comes out. The strange marriage of treated voices and swelling, pitch-bent chords and effects on Floridian Void draws the listener into its strange atmosphere; its an ambient house track of sorts, but the ambience here is a swirling, confusing, watery vortex rather than fuzzy, new age pap. Privacy Settings builds creepy wolf howls over a slow bass line and cold, far-away drums, estranged from their usual disco setting, while Israel picks things up again, with weird, pitch-shifting bells over dubby toms and cold chords. Final Wave restores the album to something resembling normality, with a disco-like swing that recalls Moodymanns beat-down productions slid through brutal dub-like effects that bring out a shade of strangeness in an otherwise happy groove.

Ease My Mind, the fifth full-length by Shout Out Louds, is a welcome return from these Swedish pop masters.

In their 15 years as a band, Shout Out Louds have toured the world many times. The band played a show in the Brazilian rainforest with a freezer box for a dressing room. They once performed in Yokohama,Japan, for an audience of two Austrians. They played in a Sicilian rainstorm so heavy they had to shake out their instruments afterwards, with the soaked backdrop left hung to dry on a hotel façade. Themusic sites will remind you that the band have performed for DavidLetterman and Jay Leno and toured with The Strokes during their heyday, but most importantly, they have released four albums of brilliant pop music.

Ease My Mind was recorded with Fredrik Swahn (from the band The Amazing) who filled the band with such new energy that they were willing to commute to the 'burbs during the darkest months of the year. He was joined by Måns Lundberg who produced the song Souvenirs and Axel Algmark who produced No Logic andAngel. The band recruited Lars Skoglund for drums, known for his work with Lykke Li.

Adam and Bebban in the band write: The world is a different place now than it was in the beginning of the 2000s. We didn't grow up very aware of political messages in music and probably didn't feel much of an urgent need to understand the world around us, in that sense. However, that has changed over the years. The world has seemed extremely dystopic and frail for quite a while now, and having children and getting older forces you to open your eyes to issues more devastating than heartbreak and feeling lost. But in our music, we still allow ourselves to address things the way we always have: through emotions rather than analysis. Music as a means of escape, a need to take a break from feeling petrified with fear. Ease My Mind is a lot about that for us.
