Living DaylightMichael Rault is a Toronto based singer, guitarist and songwriter fronting his own eponymously named band. A gifted multi-instrumentalist and arranger, his hooky blend of pop rock refracts an evolution of guitar based music through the ages. An era-defying mischievousness defines his synthesis of jukebox R'n'B, and acid psych as refracted through the experience of an adolescence spent idolizing the clever craftsmanship of the Beatles and the wiggy New Orleans textures of Dr. John in equal measure. As a recent transplant from his native Edmonton, the album is a melodically adventurous take on a classic theme - leaving home to make your way in the big city. Produced and recorded in collaboration with Renny Wilson (Mint Records), Living Daylight is a dynamic fusion of the past and future. An inclination for early Rock N' Roll is perverted by a heady production sensibility akin to the warped contemporary psych of Tame Impala. As a document of oddball DIY songwriting Living Daylight fits nicely in the lineage of records created by Ex-Edmontonian contemporaries like Mac Demarco or Sean Nicholas Savage. Future's Past (Awaiting Repress)DAVE MASON--Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and TRAFFIC co-founding member--has announced the release his new album, FUTURE'S PAST (Something Music/MRI) featuring new versions of his classic songs plus new material that he has written and performed on tour over the last few years. Renowned for such Traffic hits as Feelin' Alright (covered by Joe Cocker) and Hole In My Shoe plus his solo signature tracks We Just Disagree and Only You Know and I Know, MASON's acclaimed solo career continues to flourish as he tours the U.S. with his new project billed as DAVE MASON'S TRAFFIC JAM.
The cover art illustration for FUTURE'S PAST was done by none other than Mr. Graham Nash from a photo he made of DAVE while at Nash's place in Hawaii.
Of the new release, MASON says, There is a great version of 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' that is kind of a re-write. There is a version of 'World in Changes' that is absolutely nothing like the original and there is a great live version that is absolutely beautiful of 'Sad and Deep as You.' There are two or three songs that were on a CD called 26 Letters 12 Notes that I did seven years ago, a Robert Johnson song, 'Come On in My Kitchen' and a brand new song called 'That's Freedom.'

On The Impossible PastScranton-raised, Philadelphia-based punk rock outfit The Menzingers drop their Epitaph debut On the Impossible Past, after two acclaimed albums on small indies. The bands fiery early releases and dynamic live performances supporting Anti-Flag and Against Me! have created a serious buzz and landed the group on several best of lists.
The band caught the attention of Epitaph founder and President Brett Gurewitz, who says, These guys play the kind of pure punk rock that I grew up with. They are seriously talented songwriters and Im happy to welcome them to the Epitaph family. I think the band is a great fit here.
Their high energy sound features crashing power chords, rock steady drumming and anthemic sing-along choruses alongside poetic salt of the earth lyrics in the vein of Against Me! and Gaslight Anthem. Cost of LivingIncludes Poster
The United States' myriad inequalities, hatreds and phobias are painfully evident in 2017, offering proof that the age-old dichotomy of political bands versus apolitical bands simply doesn't exist. Either you are comfortable and unfazed by the current reigning power structures, or you use your music as a vehicle for the dismantling of oppression and the creation of something better. No matter what your songs are about, you are choosing a side.
The position of Providence, RI's Downtown Boys has been clear since they started storming through basements and DIY spaces with their radically-minded rock music: they are here to topple the white-cis-het hegemony and draft a new history. Downtown Boys began by combining revolutionary ideals with boundless energy and contagious, inclusive fun, and their resolve has only strengthened as their sound and audience have grown.
Cost of Living is their third full-length, following a self-released 2012 debut and 2015's Full Communism on Don Giovanni Records. They recorded it with Guy Picciotto (Fugazi; producer of Blonde Redhead, The Gossip), one of indie-rock's most mythological figures, in the producer's chair. Picciotto fostered the band's improvisational urges while pulling the root of their music to the forefront: unflinching choruses, fearlessly confrontational vocals, and the sense that each song will incite the room into action, sending bodies into motion that were previously thought to have atrophied.
Downtown Boys are keenly aware of the increased visibility and credibility that comes with signing to a corporate-media conglomerate such as Sub Pop. They're using this platform as a megaphone for their protest music, amplifying and centering Chicana, queer, and Latino voices in the far-too-whitewashed world of rock. In just one example, album-opener A Wall rides the feel-good power that drove so many tunes by The Clash and Wire as it calls out the idea that a wall could ever succeed in snuffing the humanity and spirit of those it's designed to crush.
Compared to previous efforts, Downtown Boys have shifted from a once-meaty brass section to the subtler melodic accompaniment of keyboards and a saxophone, coloring their anthems with warm, bright tones while singer/lyricist Victoria Ruiz spits out her frustrations and passions. Some might say it shows a sense of maturity, as Downtown Boys have undoubtedly smoothed down some of their earlier edges, but there is no compromise to their righteous assault and captivating presence. Like the socially conscious groups of years past, from Public Enemy to Rage Against the Machine, Downtown Boys harness powerful sloganeering, repetitive grooves, and earworm hooks to create one of the most necessary musical statements of the day. We should all do well to take notice!

The Living & The DeadThe Living and the Dead, Jolie Holland's new album, is quite simply a breakthrough, the album her adoring fans have been waiting for. With a vocal style hailed by the Village Voice as sultry and sweet, despairing and lonely, Jolie has experimented in the past with various settings for her unique, jazzâ€inflected voice; this time, working with collaborators like M. Ward and Marc Ribot, Ms. Holland has embraced both the rocking side of her roots and the compositional possibilities of the recording studio, multiâ€tracking her voice extensively for the first time. The results have intensified the evocative moodiness that has always existed in Holland's music, but also brought out a rollicking looseness that serves her tales of love and loss perfectly. An artist who transcends genres and demographics, Jolie Holland offers us an invite into her own warm, welcoming world.1. Mexico City

LiveThirty years ago this lineup stormed across the U.S. like a Blizzard, leaving audiences in complete awe! This live LP showcases the power and intensity of an Ozzy Osbourne performance from 1981, with legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads at his side and the solid rhythm section of Tommy Aldridge (drums) and Rudy Sarzo (bass).
Though many bands have succeeded in earning the hatred of parents and media worldwide throughout the past few decades, arguably only such acts as Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, and Marilyn Manson have tied the controversial record of Ozzy Osbourne.
The former Black Sabbath frontman has been ridiculed over his career, mostly due to rumors denouncing him as a psychopath and Satanist. Despite his outlandish reputation, however, one cannot deny that Osbourne has had an immeasurable effect on heavy metal.1. I Don't Know

The Shaw Tapes: Live In Detroit 5/27/88"The best garage band in America since the '60s. Very primitive they made
people with Les Pauls and Marshall amps look like idiots."
- Jack White
Recorded at a party in a Detroit storefront in 1988, this live recording of the
Gories captures the band at their apex. The ferocity, intensity and grit that come
through this record is a testament to why the Gories oeuvre has been heavily
mined for the past two decades by hundreds of poseurs, pretenders and johnny-come-latelys
The dual-guitar attack of Dan Kroha's smooth Fender Jaguar and
Mick Collins screechy Kent Videocaster, coupled with the snare-less, cymbal-less,
bass drum-less primitive drumming of Peggy O'Neill forms a perfect meld of
40's blues, 50's R&B, 60's garage and 70's punk. Dare we say it, but in terms of

Live With IntronautFor years this was asked on various message boards across the internet. This author posed the same question after a friend from Columbus sent a link saying "this is from a guy around here who gives away his music for free". This was before that was a cool thing to do. This was before Bandcamp. This was before "pay what you like" was a phrase.
Every now and then a new record or EP would appear online. There was no label 'hype machine', no build up, no marketing, just great music and word of mouth. The mystery grew and eventually Cloudkicker was tracked down.
Cloudkicker is Ben Sharp, a one-man project hailing from Columbus, Ohio. He gave short interviews here and there, pieces were put together; he had a day job, music was for fun, he does everything on his own and he'd never tour or never work with a label.
Credit Los Angeles post-prog metallers, Intronaut for helping break one of his statutes. In early 2014 it was announced that Cloudkicker would tour North America with none other than Intronaut as his backing band.
It was either Sacha (Dunable, Intronaut vocalist/guitarist) or Dave (Timnick, Intronaut guitarist) or both who floated the idea of using Intronaut as Cloudkicker's band. I thought it was a nice gesture but didn't really take it seriously since I figured there wouldn't be any way to make a live show happen given the distance between us and my work schedule that has me traveling 3-4 days a week. Fast forward to this past fall when they came through Columbus again and we spent the evening discussing what the realities of a tour like that would be. It was definitely a fun topic to discuss, but moreover I was impressed by their genuine excitement to maybe, one day, have the opportunity to do this. And the fact that they are musicians of such caliber and professionalism made it obvious that there would be no problems handling the music and translating it to a live show with minimal time in the same room rehearsing it, so long as I provided them with appropriate materials with which to prepare.
That he did and at the tail end of March, 2014, Sharp played his first show as Cloudkicker with Intronaut as his backing band in his hometown. A month of shows followed and luckily enough, the guys found time to enter a studio in Texas and record the set live.
With Intronaut being tied to Century Media Records, another one of Cloudkicker's statutes was broken. Cloudkicker's Live With Intronaut will be released on 11/25 through Century Media, marking the first time ever prog's most enigmatic artists will find his records available to retailers and in stores. Partir To LivePartir to Live (2012) is a non-narrative film experience in sensations, in ethical
confusion, and in physical and psychic contusions, directed by Domingo GarciaHuidobro
of Föllakzoid. Dutch minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem's score
for the film consists of appropriated 12-string electric guitar drone, black baroque
lute mirror images, and minimal electronics. For the first time ever, Sacred Bones
Records will release the DVD and soundtrack LP together in a limited one-time
pressing of 1000 copies.
Garcia-Huidobro is an aficionado of paranormal experiences. Partir to Live sees
him attempting to reconstruct the previous moments of what could have been
one of these episodes. High-tension cables, a forest, an abandoned church, a
barefoot woman; past, present and future become confused, and in this dissolved
reality, he is not sure to have found what he was looking for.
Partir to Live was part of the official selection at Valdivia Film Festival and premiered
internationally at ATP Festival in Camber Sands, England. It has screened
at over a dozen more festivals since, including SXSW Film in Austin, Brussels
Film Fest, and the Moscow International Film Festival.1. Rain Insects

Live At The MarqueeThis is a live recording featuring songs from When Dream and Day Unite and Images and Words. There really isn't that much going on here that can't be heard on the studio records. A Fortune in Lies is treated with more aggression than the original and remains one of their gems from the past. Bombay Vindaloo is a jam session that features some creative drumming from Mike Portnoy and some diverse playing from John Petrucci. Especially impressive were the muted, Al DiMeola-style quotes. Another Hand - The Killing Hand is a combination of an instrumental (Another Hand) commonly featured in their live shows and the now-infamous The Killing Hand. The latter is given a great update by singer James LaBrie and probably didn't have too many people missing Charlie Dominici. This is a good live session that will appeal mostly to the diehards of this excellent progressive metal band.1. Metropolis

Live North America 2016Back when music was only available on a vinyl album, the pure excitement captured on a live album was considered the ultimate document coveted by hardcore music fans. Clark continues this tradition by bringing the live album to a younger generation of music fans. Live North America 2016 was recorded absolutely live, with no overdubs. What you hear is how it went down.
The album includes all new and unreleased live recordings from Gary Clark Jr's 2016 tour in support of his internationally acclaimed 2015 album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. It features several songs from that album, including The Healing, Grinder, Our Love, Cold-Blooded, and Shake, featuring Leon Bridges and his saxophonist Jeff Dazey. The set is characterized by raw soul and funk, classic solo and blues performances, and several lengthy, tour de force guitar jams. It includes two previously unreleased covers, Jimmy Reed's Honest I Do and Elmore James' My Baby's Gone as well as You Saved Me and When My Train Pulls In - fan favorites from Clark's Warner Bros. Records critically praised debut Blak and Blu.
Clark's incendiary performances were also beautifully captured on Gary Clark Jr. Live, which was released in September 2014 and met with tremendous critical and commercial acclaim. Both live albums chronicle Clark's evolution on stage as his songs expand and find new life beyond the studio recordings. Much like the great blues, jazz, and soul legends of past, these recordings are lightening in a bottle - historical moments in time for an artist who is ever-morphing and one of the truly great improvisers of his generation and our time.LP 1

We Don't Even Live HereWe Don't Even Live Here is the fourth solo album from Doomtree co-founder, punk philosopher and lyrical bomb-thrower Stefon Alexander, aka P.O.S. It's a tight, bombastic record that builds on the Minneapolis-bred rapper and producer's penchant for grinding beats and radical lyrics. But at the same time, WDELH marks a change -- in sound and in attitude.
Known for welding hip-hop with guitar squalls and screamed vocals, on WDELH P.O.S. steps away from his noisy past in favor of futuristic beats fit for a Berlin nightclub. Though his hip-hop foundation is firm on tracks like the fiery "Fuck Your Stuff" and the funky "Wanted/Wasted," the album brings banging new sounds from dance-oriented collaborators like German DJs Boyz Noise & Housemeister, Gayngs' Ryan Olson, and Innerpartysystem's Patric Russel
Also along for the ride are Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who lends his shapeshifting vocals to the heartfelt bear-hug of an anthem "Where We Land") and P.O.S.' trusted Doomtree co-conspirators Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, and Sims. Bringing it all into focus is all-star producer and mix engineer Andrew Dawson (P.O.S.'s former high school classmate), who has worked on platinum releases from the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Fun.01. Despite having planned his career meticulously over the past 25 years or so, even in the camp of German hard rock master Axel Rudi Pell surprises cannot be ruled out: Before playing in front of a sold-out Cologne crowd on the second leg of his wildly successful Circle Of The Oath tour, the opportunity arose for taping the whole show, with cameras being all over. Well, Axel gave it a try. And that was a good move. Ten years after his last live album Knights Live (2002), you can - again - be a witness of a complete concert from the Bochum-based guitar virtuoso and his German-American all-star band. To round out the Axel Rudi Pell live package, the recording of the co-headlining gig at last year's Rock Of Ages festival was added to Live On Fire, the name of his newest live oeuvre.
Obviously, a live album doesn't have the same importance and significance as a new studio output, but it nevertheless is a perfect snapshot in time, because 2012 was the most successful year in Axel Rudi Pell's solo career by far. Circle Of The Oath, album No. 14, was released on March 23 and rode high on the charts all over Europe: in his homeland Germany, the critically acclaimed disc made it up to No. 16 in the first week, Switzerland welcomed good old Axel on No. 30, Austria on No. 55, Norway on No. 69 and in Sweden he went up to No. 51. And last but not least, he received another gold award for selling out three consecutive nights at the famous Zeche venue in his native Bochum. Apart from that, he rocked the summer crowds at the legendary Sweden Rock and Wacken Open Air festivals, as well as the open-air Rock Of Ages in Germany together with his band.
Even though Axel loves the composing part at home and the recording business in the studio, home is where the heart is and that's being on stage. Being musically socialized in the Golden Age of hard rock (the Seventies) he's probably a bigger fan of live albums than he would admit. As they say: applause is the performer's meat and drink. But without sometimes being anarchistic spontaneously and playing with the audience's emotions, without the sweat coming off the ceiling and the priceless energy being trapped in the middle of an adventure that is called live concert, when the lights go down and every amp is on fire - the life of a true rocker would be incomplete. Speaking of which: besides his success, Axel Rudi Pell has always been that down-to-earth guy and mainly the fan he was turned into when he first heard DEEP PURPLE's Fireball back in the day. With Live On Fire, he accomplishes a long-desired wish and gives his fans what they desperately want for quite some time.
No surprise at all that the main focus is set on the newbies: here's the striking chords of fast and furious opener Ghost In The Black, the hard rocking pounding of Before I Die and without a doubt one of Axel's best songs written in a decade: the brilliant Circle Of The Oath, which would make Jimmy Page cry out loud. But there's more to listen to on Live On Fire: the passion for medleys (The Masquerade Ball/Casbah/Dreaming Dead) combined with some all-time classics here and there (ZEPPELIN's Whole Lotta Love or PURPLE's Mistreated).1. Live At Third Man RecordsUnder the stewardship of Sub Pop and Vagrant records, Oregon's Blitzen Trapper is 8 studio albums deep into the a successful career as a modern folk-rock band, led by Eric Earley, dubbed by Paste as the ''Tom Petty of the Northwest.'' Earley's songs read like stories you could've sworn you've heard before, and his band's straightforward and every-so-slightly anthemic landscapes make for nearly universal likability - a real feat in these days of niche tastes and fragmented genres. Blitzen Trapper brought their (quite welcome!) Pacific Northwestern sensibilities, along with swampy and distinctly Floridian opener Lauris Vidal to whet our collective whistle, to the Blue Room Stage on March 16, 2016. The live record that resulted, was cut direct-to-acetate on Third Man's 1955 Scully lathe.1. Rock And Roll (Was Made For You)

Animals In The Median
Salmon Colored Vinyl
Voted Portland's 2012 Best New Band by Willamette Week
One of NPR's Artists you should've known in 2012
There is a stillness between kissing lips that belies the beating hearts connected to them,
a calm in the simple gesture that holds tumultuous emotions close, keeping their caprice
from pulling you apart. For the past three years, Radiation City has scored the soundtrack
to relationships such as these. Moments where Quiet/Bombast, Future/Past,
Man/Woman, Hope/Fear are conjoined; from their use of modern electronic sounds and
the restraint of classic bossa records, to the urgency and harmony of northern soul, the
band has codified seemingly disparate ideas into a sound and ethos that is at once
refreshing and classic. Their second LP Animals In The Median will be released May 7th.
Founded in 2009 amid the glow of one budding love affair, Radiation City quickly
blossomed into a family, finding itself with a second couple and another multi
instrumentalist besides. If the quintet's early live shows and debut LP The Hands That
Take You quickly earned them a reputation as one of Portland, Oregon's most promising
young acts, the subsequent national tours and 2011's EP Cool Nightmare made good on
that promise. The band's expanding soundscape of new romanticism has drawn
accolades from NPR, Time, and KEXP to name a few.
The new full length features 12 songs recorded over the span of a year in both rural
Washington and urban Portland. You can hear a focused songwriting, lush arrangements,
and gorgeous harmonies. You can hear the celebration and lament of a sea change year
which saw the passing of matriarchs, the betrayals and betrothals of loved ones, the
baring and bruising of hopeful hearts in an increasingly dangerous world. Moreover, you
can hear a band edified, coming into their own in rich and simple gesture.1. Zombies

Out In The StormRecorded With John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth)
LP Housed In A Matte Jacket With Silver Foil Detail
Includes A 12 x 24" Printed Poster Insert
Out in the Storm is the blazing result of a woman reawakened. Her mostautobiographical and honest album to date, Out in the Storm is a self-reflective anchorin the story of both Katie Crutchfield's songwriting and her life. The album tells thestory of taking control of a volatile situation, embracing flaws, and exploring a newsonic freedom.
The album was tracked at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia with John Agnello, known for working with some of the most iconic musicians of the last 25 years, including Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. For Agnello, it was Crutchfield's voice thatdrew him in. "The first demo song I heard was 'Fade'. The melodies, the way she singsit, the way she turns the melody, and the way she goes note to note is literally beautiful.Singers-you either have it or you don't. She has it." Agnello and Crutchfield workedtogether for most of December 2016, along with the band: sister Allison Crutchfieldon keyboards and percussion, Katherine Simonetti on bass, and Ashley Arnwine ondrums; Katie Harkin, touring guitarist with Sleater-Kinney, also contributed lead guitar. At Agnello's suggestion, the group recorded most of the music live to enhance theirunity in a way that gives the album a fuller sound compared to past releases, resultingin one of Waxahatchee's most guitar-driven releases to date. "My experience workingwith John was genuinely life-changing," says Crutchfield. "We had such a greatconnection right off the bat, and I really feel like he was always looking out for me. Hepushed me when I needed it, and gave me space when I needed it."
Crutchfield's voice oscillates between effortless grace and commanding righteousness, taking the listener with her on an explicitly personal journey. Songs like "Hear You"and "No Question" are lyrically unapologetic and musically resolute, while the softeracoustic songs like "A Little More" and "Fade" let fear and melancholy seep through. But it is on the atmospheric "Sparks Fly" where we feel an essential redemption."Sparks Fly" acts as an inner dialogue and marks the first time since the inception ofWaxahatchee that any semblance of self-love has shone through. This moment is aperspective we've yet to see from Crutchfield: it is a rediscovery of herself, and therealization of a full life she is completely worthy of. "It's about self-preservation, self-care,and reclaiming your autonomy," says Crutchfield. "When you find the things thatmake you happy, sometimes it's easier to see things that make you unhappy."1.
