    The Blue Room Sessions

Back in January 2015, we had the pleasure of hosting Coupler in our Blue Room. The event came to life when these local acousticians and purveyors of deliberate ambience took the stage. It was twenty minutes of captivating and unhurried techno that sounded bucolic at first, then violent, then crumbling, but always with a deft momentum. You could feel it in your gut and in your skull. Coupler's set was a twenty-minutes mega-moment of song, and we decided the live album needed an accompanying piece. We invited them back to record Side B in October with a full orchestra of nine friends and musicians, and it turned out to be a very special piece exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic. However, this wasn't our typical TMR show. We kept it a relatively intimate affair, with the stage in the center of the room, and only sold a handful of tickets to those interested in seeing a recording process become a performance, making this our first installment in The Blue Room Sessions series.

If you're new to the magic of Coupler, you can think of them as an ''organization'' rather than a band. Ryan Norris' objectives go beyond leading a band - he aims to use Coupler as a vehicle for writing, photography, installation art, film-scoring, etc, and above all this, he aims to collaborate with the creative people around him that inspire him. In the case of this particular performance, the organization core live members, Rodrigo Avendaño, Rollum Haas and Norris, plus a group of auxiliary players: Adam Bednarik, Mark Bond, Matt Glassmeyer, Mia Krout and Ben Marcantel. The icing on the cake was Kelli Shay Hix and her light installation. The performance was tackled from an oblique angle, using group improvisation to reinvent the trajectory as they played. The end result? The birth of a new series, and one of our favorite musical creations to which the Blue Room has ever played host.

    Closer To Home

Produced by Terry Knight, Closer To Home is Grand Funk Railroad's third studio album, and was released in 1970. The album reached Gold record status the same year, making it the group's third Gold record in one year. The album's inside artwork shows a live photo of the band performing at Madison Square Garden in February 1970.

Closer To Home was the record that really broke them through to the commercially successful level of Metal masters such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Rather than rushing headlong into their typical hard, heavy, and overamplified approach, Grand Funk Railroad began expanding their production values.

Most evident is the inclusion of strings, the acoustic opening on the disc's leadoff cut, Sins a Good Man's Brother, as well as the comparatively mellow Mean Mistreater. But the boys had far from gone soft. The majority of Closer To Home is filled with the same straight-ahead rock & roll that had composed their previous efforts.

No Direction Home (200 Gram) (On Sale)

The seventh volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series doubles as the soundtrack to No Direction Home, Martin Scorseses's feature-length documentary covering Dylan's career from its beginnings to 1966 (it was aired in two parts on PBS in September 2005 and released in expanded form on DVD that same month). Unlike the previous three installments of The Bootleg Series, which focused exclusively on live concerts, No Direction Home is assembled from a variety of sources, including home recordings, publishing demos, alternate studio takes, and live recordings, with the first disc devoted to early acoustic recordings and the second to electric music. In fact, No Direction Home proceeds chronologically, filling in gaps between the proper albums or, more often, providing a parallel history of the most productive era of Dylan's career. All of this material -- with the exception of Song to Woody, taken from his debut, and a cataclysmic version of Like a Rolling Stone taken from the Royal Albert Hall show that was released as Bob Dylan Live '66 -- is previously unreleased, and much of it has not been widely bootlegged (and the cuts that have been bootlegged, such as Dink's Song, have never been heard in such crystal-clear fidelity). Where the inaugural edition of The Bootleg Series had many previously unreleased Dylan originals, there is only one here, the tentative opener, When I Got Troubles, a sweet, simple 1959 song that finds Dylanin his formative stage. In place of unheard songs are a slew of alternate versions of familiar tunes. On the first two LP's, these are largely live versions of such warhorses as Blowin' in the Wind, Masters of War, and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall, recorded when the songs were still fresh. These live performances have an immediacy and intimacy that not only illustrate what a powerful folksinger Dylan was, but also suggest how the songs might have sounded when they were new tunes. Toward the end of the second LP, alternate versions that are significantly different from the final versions begin to surface with an early take on Mr. Tambourine Man recorded at the Another Side of Bob Dylan sessions with Ramblin' Jack Elliott on second guitar and backing vocals. The third and fourth LP's contain several alternates that are similarly notably different, highlighted by a lively, careening It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry with a different final verse, a Desolation Row with electric guitar, Highway 61 Revisited without the siren whistle, a slower, heavier, blusier take on Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat, a relaxed version of Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again that lacks the carnivalesque swirl of sound from the Blonde on Blonde version, and a lean, insistent Visions of Johanna.

Everything here is uniformly excellent and worth hearing well more than once. That alone, of course, would make this yet another worthwhile addition to any serious Dylan collection, but what makes No Direction Home noteworthy as an album is that it is the first Dylan record to offer an aural biography of Dylan. This does a superb job of tracing the development of Dylan as a musician, taking him from a young folkie singing standards, through the rush of his early standards, and to the visionary music he made once he went electric. Put in this context, the electric music on the third and fourth LP's sounds as bracing and brilliant and surprising as it did in the '60s, while the acoustic folk on LP's one and two sounds vibrant, pure, and alive. After all these years, that's a hard accomplishment to pull off, and to the credit of everybody involved in this terrific release, they've been able to make even the most familiar Dylan tunes feel new again.

As usual, this deluxe edition comes from the original mix down masters and was transferred by Bernie Grundman to lacquer on on Classic's all tube analog cutting system. This deluxe 4-LP set includes two alternate cover art gatefold jackets (Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all Back Home), a 60+ page 12 x12 booklet all housed in an a special outer box.

As we trudge through the final moments of Winter, we present to you this live album born out of the sweaty and oppressive Tennessee Summer... DIVINE FITS, comprised of Spoon's Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner, Gaunt/New Bomb Turks' Sam Brown and Alex Fischel, recorded an epic set in July of 2013, ending the performance by bringing a fan up on stage to destroy a piñata and litter the blue room with Snickers and Twix... Live At Third Man Records

Under the stewardship of Sub Pop and Vagrant records, Oregon's Blitzen Trapper is 8 studio albums deep into the a successful career as a modern folk-rock band, led by Eric Earley, dubbed by Paste as the ''Tom Petty of the Northwest.'' Earley's songs read like stories you could've sworn you've heard before, and his band's straightforward and every-so-slightly anthemic landscapes make for nearly universal likability - a real feat in these days of niche tastes and fragmented genres. Blitzen Trapper brought their (quite welcome!) Pacific Northwestern sensibilities, along with swampy and distinctly Floridian opener Lauris Vidal to whet our collective whistle, to the Blue Room Stage on March 16, 2016. The live record that resulted, was cut direct-to-acetate on Third Man's 1955 Scully lathe.

    Live At Third Man Records

Recorded on July 18th, 2014 as the opening set for Peter Walker's psychedelic guitar experience, William Tyler's Live at Third Man Records LP was buried for far too long in our backlog of masters. To release it too soon would have been to unleash the secrets of the transcendent and acclaimed new record Modern Country (Merge, 2016) before they had a chance to manifest. Too wait any longer would have been torture for us. Originally planned to be a live single, the full, 5-song performance was too truthy, too seamless, and too perfectly whole to be whittled down to two tracks. So, surprise! A live LP is born.

For those unfamiliar with William Tyler, his story is Nashville legend... born into a songwriting family, Tyler was tapped by Kurt Wagner to become a member of Lambchop at age 19 (two decades younger than the other members), and quickly became the ''architect of the band's sound.'' From there, Tyler went on to back up the Silver Jews, Bonnie ''Prince'' Billy, Charlie Louvin, and others... all the while writing songs for his configuration of choice: fingerpicking solo guitar. The acoustic simplicity of his first two albums remains in his most recent effort (which he describes as ''a love letter to what we're losing in America. To what we've already lost''), and on this live LP, but Tyler is bringing more depth and more experimentation to his compositions of late. ''Gone Clear'' (known as ''Going Clear'' at the time of our recording) which appears on both records, is a melting pot of ideas: a drone reminiscent of Hindustani classical music, a central melody that sounds distinctly Appalachian, a devolution into a kaleidoscope of colors and ideas that it's hard to believe is being produced by a single musician. This layering of textures is Tyler's trademark, and even more awe-inspiring live.

We like to think that with the purposeful lack of smart phones, bars to saddle up to, and, of course, corners, concert-goers in the Blue Room tend to be more in-the-moment than in most performance venues. But it's a rare artist who can take the already focused atmosphere in the room and quiet every last busy mind - Tyler did just that. This immortalization of the performance in all its transmundane glory will entrance you from first note.

    Live At Third Man Records

There are certain bands in this supersaturated, hyper-fragmented, temperamental internet era that rise above ephemeral popularity not because they perpetually reinvent themselves or stay ahead of trends or make headlines with crazy antics or write a mega hit or have a super dreamy frontperson... there are certain bands that rise above because of one characteristic that trumps all others: consistency.

Woods is one of those bands, and their wheelhouse is a decidedly mellow blend of folk, psych, soul, and funk that's wise beyond its years in timbre and lyric. It's a comforting kind of music Woods makes. It doesn't take you anywhere you don't want to go, even if they world they depict is less and less hospitable with every passing day. It's a soundscape reflective of the world it was created in, and its lack of call-it-action and angst makes it endlessly listenable for those of us with regrettably overactive minds.

With over ten years and nine studio records under their belt, this Brooklyn band also runs their own label and 2-day festival at Big Sur, and has carved out a loyal legion of appreciators who extol their steadfast artistry and work ethic. We got to see the Nashville Chapter of this legion, as well as a whole slew of new members, at their live taping in our Nashville Blue room, Monday May 2nd. All captured on their Live at Third Man Records LP.

    Live At Third Man Records

Performance Recorded Direct-To-Acetate On March 26, 2016, At Third Man Nashville's Blue Room Venue

It's no stretch to say that Carla Azar is one of America's greatest living drummers. Intuitive, skilled, and perched quite comfortably on the extremely thin line between high energy and total entropy. All too often the title is heaped upon some goofball doing blast beats, rambling about breakdowns and power violence, all can easily be mistaken for the sounds of a scratched CD. Lucky for us and lucky for every pair of ears the whole world over, Third Man doesn't buy into that nonsense. And CDs? Scratched or brand spankin' new, they're not our preferred medium.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Autolux is comprised of singer/bassist Eugene Goreshter, drummer Azar, and guitarist/keyboardist Greg Edwards. The band formed in 2000 and has released two EPs and three LPs, including Pussy's Dead in 2016, shortly before this epic live show was recorded in the Third Man Blue Room. Their sound is peculiar and unmistakable, a collision of post-punk, noise, pop and electronica (Organica? Maybe!). Think cyborg whistling glitch-hop mash-ups. You get it? Haha! Nice!

Live records speak for themselves. This record speaks for itself. If you need us to say anything further, we're gonna need you to set this sheet down, free up both hands, use one to call your mom, keep her on the line, and use the other to hold her hand while she walks you toward the record bin housing something ''on your level,'' because apparently live music ain't your thing. But if you're still reading, it's because you clearly get it. Now go grip this record and see what the fuss is all about.

Parquet Courts brought a sweltering performance to the hallowed grounds of Third Man's Blue Room on June 5th of last year--and very fortunately, TMR was able to lovingly capture it with their one-of-a-kind, direct-to-acetate recording process. Last May, two of the funniest guys we know decided to stop in the Blue Room while on the road promoting their definitive and comprehensive 16-CD Box Set (yes, you read that right) The Best of The Best Show. What was comprehensive became immediately not so after Tom Scharpling (#31 on Rolling Stone's Fifty Funniest People List), and Jon Wurster (#51 on said list, plus esteemed indie-rock pioneer, comedy writer, and actor in his own right) recorded an episode of The Best Show here at Third Man Records. But, fear not, completists! As with nearly every event to grace our famous cornerless room, we recorded it, and it's almost as hilarious on wax as it was in person.

Needle to vinyl is the only way to hear this comedy gold, and we're proud to be the ones to bring an LP of this caliber into existence. Backed by friends-of-Third-Man-and-anyone-with-ears ''Willy and the Mason Jars'' (William Tyler, Ryan Norris, Jem Cohen, and Jacob Edwards), Scharpling & Wurster not only witty repartee your face off over and over again on this seminal offering, they also sing their asses off, and interview a very special guest.

Fucked Up is a rare band. They're a mutant strain of post-hardcore, arena punk super-talents capable of reworking the strange and the beautiful into something cohesive, but never at the expense of their signature, addictive, furious entropy. They are truly a blitzkrieg of song and lyric.

Is it work-shy and lazy to call a live record whose songs flow seamlessly into one another ''epic?'' What if every track is a battering ram of rabid guitar, fugitive vox, death match bass and roaring drums? No matter how you dice it one word won't ever be enough to explain a band like Fucked Up. All substitutions will pale in comparison to the experience itself. That goes for every blurb and every pixelated cell phone video out there. But our record does the show justice.

Fucked Up got their start as many often do, making the rounds on punk and DIY circuits in Toronto, around Canada and later into the USA. Punk is a genre known for its velocity, brevity, and politics, although here we have an almost complete inversion of those core traits: songs don't race the clock, mythology and storytelling weaving fully realized narratives, and a bipartisan set with a 100% approval rating.

You don't need to be from the South to understand Billy Wayne Davis' particular brand of humor, but being the Nashvillians we are (both transplanted and native), this up-and-comer is one of our favorite used-to-be local (and soon-to-go-global) stand-up comedians. Davis has gone from surprising crowds at the comedy club down the road with his ''like-hillbill-ity,'' to winning over the alt comedy scene of Seattle, to hangin' with Marc Maron and working with the likes of Lisa Lampanelli, Louis CK, and Mitch Hedberg since his most recent move to Los Angeles. Third Man Records was thrilled to have Tennessee's much-missed ''thinking man's hillbilly'' to our stage for a little Southern hospitality and to record another addition to what is becoming a pretty formidable series of live comedy records. Some of our absolute favorite releases over the past seven years have been made without the use of a single guitar, and we expect Billy Wayne Davis Live at Third Man Records to join those very ranks.

This record captures a show we had been wanting to see at Third Man since day Numero Uno. Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart are two of the most talented and creative people we know and we couldn't be more pleased that they rocked our stage and committed it to wax so we can finally have a release on the label by the one and only KILLS. These 8 songs were recorded direct-to-acetate on October 10, 2012.

Three very special live records - The Shins, The Kills, and Seasick Steve - all recorded in the Third Man Blue Room last October, and the first three releases recorded live using their one-of-a-kind direct-to-acetate recording process. Without overdubs or editing, these three records were mixed in real time on a Rupert Neve 5008 console by Grammy Award winning engineer Vance Powell, and instantly cut to vinyl by master cutter George Ingram using a 1953 Scully Lathe that previously churned out masters for Cincinnati's legendary King Records (the story goes that James Brown's It's A Man's World was cut on this lathe among many more great sides...)

Live At Third Man Records 10-6-2012

What can we say about The Shins that hasn't already been said in miles of press? They're one of the best bands out there today and we are still honored thinking back to the night James Mercer and his band here to play live and record a live LP for us. This show holds a particularly special place in our hearts, as it was the inaugural groove-carving voyage of our 1953 Scully Lathe that previously churned out masters for Cincinnati's legendary King Records. The 8 tracks on this live recording mark our first ever cut live direct-to-acetate, and we couldn't be more pleased with the way they turned out.

The dog Hisself joined us at Third Man for a rare Stateside live appearance on October 26th, 2012. Nobody, but nobody, rocks a Diddley Bow like Seasick Steve, and we captured the every nuance in this direct-to-acetate recording. No edits. No overdubs. Just Seasick Steve in all his glory that fateful night in October.

Mudhoney: Live At Third Man Records

As we trudge through the final moments of Winter, we present to you this live album born out of the sweaty and oppressive Tennessee Summer... all-American grunge pioneers MUDHONEY joined us later in the Summer while touring in support of their ninth (ninth!) studio album, bringing a little piece of Seattle to our lathe room, and now to your turntables and earholes.

Recorded Direct-To-Acetate by the double-drummer quartet on May 30th, 2013 in our Blue Room, this show shook pictures off the walls of Third Man headquarters and had the crowd begging for two things: earplugs, and for the night to never end.

Shabazz Palaces: Live at Third Man Records

Live Record, Recorded Direct-To-cetate In January Of 2015

Shabazz Palaces is Ishmael Butler (Digible Planets) and Tendai Maraire, and their Lese Majesty was easily the most spun record on the Third Man office turntable in 2014. Our admiration reached new heights when we had the honor of hosting the Seattle-based duo for a live performance and direct-to-acetate recording in our Nashville Blue Room last year. In Third Man consigliere Ben Swank's own words, ''Shabazz Palaces' obstinately original oeuvre emanates from a fully formed higher conscious, they plant their flag in the outermost realms of the hip hop global soundscape where vibrations throb into beat-heavy explorations, chrome covered constellations of higher reveries each offering its own sonic boom.''

Ishmael and Tendai announced recently that they will be supporting Radiohead on their upcoming LA dates, and the group released a new video featuring footage from the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA's Johnson Space Center, and the Hubble and Cassini space missions for their track ''Dawn In Luxor'' just last week, We agree... you'd better go ahead and watch here.

Man With The Movie Camera: Live At Third Man Records

    Direct-To-Acetate

The Alloy Orchestra double Live LP was recorded Direct-To-Acetate October, 12th in the Third Man Blue Room as the soundtrack to The Man With The Movie Camera Screening, cohosted by the Belcourt Theatre as part of the 2013 iNDie Festival.

It was only a lucky few iNDie Festival attendees who witnessed Alloy Orchestra's performance of their soundtrack to the 1929 silent film ''The Man with the Movie Camera'' in our Blue Room last Fall, so we are pleased to bring the recording to you in the form of a double LP. Alloy Orchestra is a 3-man musical ensemble - Roger C. Miller, Ken Winokur, & Terry Donahue - who use ''racks of junk,'' synthesizers, and all sorts of other unusual instruments, found objects, and unlikely noisemakers to aurally accompany silent films. Roger Ebert has called them ''the best in the world at accompanying silent films,'' and we can't disagree. ''The Man with the Movie Camera,'' directed by Dziga Vertov and edited by his wife Elizaveta Svilova, is a documentary with no specific cast or narrative. In the film, a man carries out his day in the city as a member of the proud proletariat, capturing invention and the relationship between man and machine in Lenin's Soviet Union.
