Give Yourself Goosebumps: Ry Cooder's Cross-Cultural Chicken Skin Music Mixes Hawaiian, Gospel, Conjunto, Folk, and Blues Styles into a Visionary Roots-Music Tapestry

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Natural-Sounding 180g Vinyl LP Features Defined Textures, Intricate Details, Ample Airiness

The title of Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music - Hawaiian slang for goosebumps - serves as a direct, simple description of the album's emotional appeal. But it barely scratches the surface of a 1976 effort that triggered an interest in world music a decade before the term became commonplace and a genre into and of itself. Part of a series of inimitable mid-1970s records on which Cooder ignored traditional boundaries and instigated lasting cross-cultural communication, Chicken Skin Music blends gospel, Hawaiian, folk, blues, and Tex-Mex styles into a brilliant roots stew distinguished with virtuosic playing and inspired contextual surprises.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g vinyl LP of Chicken Skin Music brings the brilliant instrumental textures and lively tonalities to the fore like no prior analog edition. Graced with silent, black backgrounds and generous soundstages, this reissue particularly underscores the depth of Flaco Jimenez's accordion contributions. You'll hear the air flowing through the reeds, pressure resonating from the bellows, and the wide-spanning timbres emanating from the register stops.

Equally transfixing are the lifelike manners in which the rich assortment of guitars come alive, with each note occupying its own space and portraying a character unique to the individual instrument, be it a slack-key, steel, or acoustic guitar. The result is a multi-detailed, organic-sounding musical tapestry that dazzles by way of beautiful interplay, unexpected dialogue, and connective eclecticism that proves music is indeed a common language when executed with a collaborative mindset, innovative exploration, and respectful authenticity - no easy feats, but achievements fully on display on Chicken Skin Music.

Jimenez, now a legend that's performed with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Dr. John, remains one of the keys to Cooder being able to successfully carry out what the latter deemed a mutuality in music vision. Cooder first heard conjunto accordion fare on a Mexican radio station in his car and proceeded to teach himself the instrument while committing himself to embracing the then-local, regionalized style for the set that became Chicken Skin Music. Jimenez graces three tracks, including a ravishing interpretation of Ben E. King's Stand by Me transformed into a spiritual grounded by a norteno structure and a romantic take on Jim Reeves' He'll Have to Go recast with a bolero rhythm and saxophone-accordion duet.

Chicken Skin Music isn't limited to South of the Border geography and tradition. Steel-guitarist and vocalist Gabby Pahinui and slack-key guitar great Atta Isaacs represent the 50th state on stripped-down renditions of Hank Snow's smash Yellow Roses and the wordless Chloe. Elsewhere, gospel singers team with Cooder on the Appalachian-tinted Always Lift Them Up, the midsection of which features the Hawaiian standard Kanaka Wai Wai.

Cooder bookends everything with a pair of Leadbelly numbers - The Bourgeois Blues and Goodnight Irene - chosen after the headliner witnessed Jimenez and his band perform at a local dance. Given their ordering on the album, techniques they employ, and themes, the songs also further tighten the thematic connection the headliner makes with the standout guests. In many ways, Chicken Skin Music is the equivalent of Buena Vista Social Club more than 20 years before the latter emerged. Experience it the way Cooder and company meant it to be heard - in unparalleled fidelity.

    Zaba

Created in Epworth's own studio it is undoubtedly among this year's most striking debuts. The title, lifted from Dave's favorite childhood story, comes from
William Steig's The Zabajaba Jungle. Steig's evocation of childhood adventure, exoticism and discovery is brilliantly fresh. ZABA is one complete beast
and a journey you will get most from if you immerse yourself fully and listen from start to finish. The sound of the record, Dave says, is like a backdrop
    of man-made wilderness...

Influenced by the exploratory, New World scenarios of Apocalypse Now, The Island of Dr Moreau, Heart of Darkness, The African Queen and Mosquito
Coast, ZABA's songs tackle the humanization of nature and human interference with nature. Even now a lot of my favorite books are those books that I
grew up with, he says. Things like Zabajaba, like Roald Dahl, like Wind in the Willows. I suppose all I've been doing is using those little creatures and
animals to cover up what I really meant, to disguise who and what I was really talking about.

Inspired by Kanye West and Charles Darwin, Nina Simone and the Velvet Underground, ZABA is a rich and textured work, a very special record indeed.
With Dave producing and Epworth as A&R and mentor, the studio became their home and the band were free to record, improvise and write at their own
speed, making their sound a bigger, brighter, heavier and more intense experience than ever before.

The first single, Gooey is wobbly and child-like, a hymn to naivety. There's a confidence in the way children act, Dave says. I was trying to push that
confidence into the beat. Walla-Walla goes back to Dave's love of Timbaland and Dr Dre, while Intruxx, initially the introduction to the entire record,
summarizes this entire new world you're entering.

    Every Now & Then

Jagwar Ma returns with their second album Every Now & Then.

The Sydney-formed band came together for sessions across a handful of studios and locations in Australia, the UK, and France to shake up an altogether inspired new offering. Full of spirit and exploding with the energy of new ideas, Every Now & Then is formed from the building blocks of a myriad of sonic touchstones upon which Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield concoct a heady, uplifting brew that very much owns it's own space on the spectrum.

Singer/guitarist Gabriel Winterfield and multi-instrumentalist Jono Ma originally joined forces at the turn of the decade, having reached an impasse with their previous bands. Liberated, they instantly felt their horizons opening up, culminating in the kaleidoscopic dub-pop of Jagwar Ma's 2013 debut album Howlin. Augmented by their old Sydney friend Jack Freeman on bass and backing vocals they set about creating their own infectious groove with their increasingly powerful live show.

After almost three years of touring the world (including tours with Foals, The xx, and Tame Impala) the band returned to Australia to write and begin recording at Sonar studios in Sydney. With the basis of the album written, the band headed back to La Briche near Tours in rural France, where they had recorded their debut in a self-built studio on a friend's partly-renovated farm, before returning to London to record drum sessions with Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa and James Ford and finishing mixing with old friend Ewan Pearson in their new shared Tottenham studio The Bunker II.

Jono is a student of the studio in the Jagwar Ma camp, and on Every Now & Then his production hand constructs the richly singular sonic world each track inhabits. The record is littered with surprising selections yet maintains an ebb and flow that echoes that of a day in coastal Australia. 'Repetition invites participation' and the composition of Every Now & Then is a testament to the turn of phrase, subtly seducing with loose-limbed sinewy grooves on loop.

Entrancing incantations on romantic love, truth and courage come courtesy of co-songwriter and lead vocalist Gabriel. Lush melody from left field, grungey phrasing and pagan shapes, Winterfield flows in tandem with each song's unique sea of sound. "Can we be real?"

Classic bass lines, jangly guitar parts and Paul's Boutique-inspired loops bounce off elements of synth-pop and encounter bass heavy experiments redolent of Blanck Mass and other elements of the Norwegian electronic onslaught together with swelling psychedelic choruses, reminiscent of summer-kissed Ocean Rain-period Bunnymen, exploding into melodic, sun-soaked wig-outs.

At heart, a studio album, designed for lone listening on headphones but as a shared experience is where it will really come to life. Their live appearances for Howlin' were electric and key elements of Every Now & Then took on extra shape while touring Europe with fellow compatriots Tame Impala, successfully working out the structure of tracks in front of arena crowds.

Every Now & Then deftly covers a broad expanse of sound and mood. Say What You Feel gradually envelopes with its tireless drive and shapeshifting form to an ecstatic peak before Loose Ends cools down the pace with dubbed, fractured melodies. Give Me A Reason flips from muted funk pop to percolating, percussive house before seamlessly transitioning into a gyrating, teched up club tool. The glorious dynamism continues with Ordinary's quantum leap chorus, while High Rotation possesses a sinister spirit, a chuggy druggy groove and compelling, cultish chanting. Colour Of Paradise closes out the record, a bittersweet beauty of surf melodies and euphoric synths - 'searching through every grain of sand', lifting off and leaving the earthly territory behind completely for a deeper, more celestial, spacey place.

From underwater liquid rhythm through to joyous, floating in the clouds sky highs, Every Now & Then is Jagwar Ma's cathartic new injection we endeavor you to dose up on.

    Lost In The Dream

Lost In The Dream is the third album by Philadelphia band The War on Drugs, but in many ways,it feels
like the first. Around the release of the 2011 breakthrough Slave Ambient,Adam Granduciel spent the
bulk of two years on the road, touring through progressively larger rock clubs, festival stages and late night television slots. As these dozen songs shifted and grew beyond what they'd been in the studio, The War on Drugs became a bona fide rock 'n'roll band.

That essence drives Lost In The Dream, a 10-song set produced by Granduciel and longtime engineer Jeff
Zeigler. In the past, Granduciel built the core of songs largely by himself. But these tunes were played
and recorded by the group that had solidified so much on the road: Dave Hartley, (his favorite bassist
in the world), who had played a bit on The War on Drugs' 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues, and pianist
Robbie Bennett, a multi-instrumentalist who contributed to Slave Ambient. This unit spent eight
months bouncing between a half-dozen different studios that stretched from the mountains of North
Carolina to the boroughs of New York City. Only then did Granduciel-the proudly self-professed
gearhead, and unrepentant perfectionist-add and subtract, invite guests and retrofit pieces. He
sculpted these songs into a musical rescue mission, through and then beyond personal despair and
anxiety. Lost In The Dream represents the trials of the trip and the triumphs of its destination.

"I wanted there to be a singular voice, but I wanted it to be a project of great friends. Everyone in the
band cares about it so much,"he says."That is the crux of it-growing up,dealing with life, having close
friends, helping each other get by. That is what the record's all about.

As such, these tunes reveal a careful and thrilling reinvention of the sound that's become The War on
Drugs' trademark. The signature meld of long tones and scatter shot layers still stands, with phantom
drum machines and organ lines dotting the musical middle distance all across Lost In The Dream.Note
the way the keys whisper against the guitar's growl as the tempestuous"An Ocean in Between the Waves"
approaches pentecostal heat. Hear how, when a sharp and hard riff cuts into the inescapable chorus of
"Red Eyes," synthetic strings and baritone saxophone shape a soft, infinite bed beneath it. But there's a
new found directness to these tunes, too. Granduciel's voice steps out from behind its typical web of
effects-louder now, with more experiences to share and more steel from having survived them. He
sounds less like a prismatic reflection of a rock bandleader, more like the emboldened actualization of
that idea. With its crisp, unencumbered delivery, "Eyes to the Wind" becomes the album's centerpiece
and the group's new anthem. This is Granduciel's to-date triumph and the exact moment where Lost In
The Dream moves from a tale of confusion to one of resolve. Throughout most of the record, grips
loosen and senses fail, memories are mourned and expectations are abandoned. But after the Rolling
Thunder lift of "Eyes to the Wind," Granduciel finds new contentment and direction. Anguish
sublimates into deliverance. Backed by his bros, Granduciel becomes a preacher in a new pulpit.

"The utter rawness and sincerity of his
    performance is absolutely captivating."
    - Pitchfork

"Montreal's best kept secret (...) sparkles like

    happy pills."
    - NM

bermuda waterfall= invisible action, unconscious fertilization,
    the subconscious master plan continuum

Much of the words to Bermuda (which i feel are the center piece) were written
whilest travelling between one place i loved and another place/people i loved, and
trying to describe my most potent dreams related to my most potent life experiences.
there was a feeling of disappointment in communication with the people that i'm
calling out to connect with through my performances and travels in the last year, a
    feeling of loneliness.

I had to have faith with the meanings of the poetry because more then ever it was
lifted from my life often without being understood, only knowing that they were
events, truths i admired, truthfully complex as anything so haunting can be
interpreted in so many ways, like any dream funny or sexual, or horrifying. not so
much knowing the reasons, but just the experiences as mysterious as they are to me.
i promise that i was as straight forward with the words as possible in describing
    these nuances.

Full of yin and yang, and just sitting back and taking a look at my life, something i'm
happy with, and came naturally in the words of which i intended for the first time
nothing. i'll have to wait a few years before i understand exactly whats going on in
the record, in this time in my life, and i'm alright with that, cos i'm into mystery.

    Silver Kobalt

In between work for Björk, The Cinematic Orchestra and Anoushka Shankar, the prodigious Hang player and percussionist Manu Delago has inked a deal with Tru Thoughts to release his own new album, 'Silver Kobalt'. The ambitious LP draws lines from pop to the avant-garde.

Aged just 30, Manu Delago is the world's leading Hang player (with 5 million YouTube views for his DIY performance video "Mono Desire") and possesses equally virtuosic skills as a percussionist and drummer alongside ever maturing instincts as a songwriter and producer. The accessible yet startlingly original sound of 'Silver Kobalt' draws on the experience and ideas built up by the London based Austrian native across a high-flying and diverse career to date. From overachieving teenaged rock bands, through extensive classical training; from his exploits at the cutting edge of art pop as the lynchpin of Björk's band, to a London Symphony Orchestra commission which saw him playfully subverting their expectations; this endlessly curious artist has been honing his own style rich in melody, wit and invention.

The title, 'Silver Kobalt', plays on the strangely linked themes of magnets, goblins and human behaviour. Throwing a pair of small magnets in the air one day, Delago recorded their frantic, thrumming sound for the track "Plus Minus"; he also experimented with the detuning effect of a magnet on the Hang. Magnet fascination deepening, he read that some rare elements are permanently magnetised, of which one is cobalt. Then, up popped the pleasing story that cobalt was actually named after the German word for 'goblin' ('kobold') by hapless silver miners who suspected little kobolds had taken all the silver and left them with this substance. Further reading revealed also that all humans contain cobalt which we need to survive. "I really enjoyed this string of information", he says. "As well as this fun idea of little goblins within us, it really struck a chord because I had been thinking a lot about attraction and repulsion - what makes people magnetically drawn to some things, away from others - and that is a strong theme in the music. 'Silver Kobalt' tied it all together."

Tying together the many sonic threads is co-producer Matt Robertson (Björk, The Prodigy, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), following his work on Delago's acclaimed 2013 LP 'Bigger Than Home', the record on which he began to truly develop his current sound. This is a sound that revolves around the unique timbre of the Hang, but encompasses much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to multi-layered beats and a variety of synths.

The hypnotic, nursery rhyme-like Hang melody of lead single "Disgustingly Beautiful" feat. Isa Kurz opens the album; the affecting vocals of Kurz (also the pianist and violinist on record and in the live outfit Manu Delago Handmade) ride a bass-heavy undercurrent, with added beats from Grammy nominated producer j.viewz. On the spiky yet melodically catchy "Plus Minus", the aforementioned magnet theme is extended into the composition, with two main lines that are pulled together and pushed apart. "Drumheart feat. Anil Sebastian" is pristine bassy pop lifted onto another plane by the haunting, androgynous vocals of the up-and-coming singer.

Stealthily moving into a fascinating instrumental section, "Down to the Summit" (which, unusually, uses the Indian drone instrument Surpeti for harmony) leads to the punchy, subby Hang sound and four-handed piano tinkering of "Wandering Around" and on to the joyful "Simon is Psychling", which calls to mind a DJ with speakers on a bike, circling a big field, one lap bringing a bassoon solo, another an industrial noise-fest. Restoring calm, "Sun In The North feat. Isa Kurz" is a potent lyrical snapshot from a day on the beach on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, its rhythms inspired by playing with Indian musicians there. Cobalt gets its glory in the shape-shifting "Chemical Reaction feat. Rahel", and the lovelorn "Dearest" was conceived on tour in Australia where Delago captured the fairytale vocals of celebrated Australian folk singer Katie Noonan. "Almost Thirty", in Delago's words, "draws a bow from Eurotrash Dance Music to Austrian folk music, with some brainy immature rhythm ejaculations in between"; a banger that skirts the border between strange-town and club-land, it is a thrilling way to see out both his third decade on Earth and the album.

Having been given his first drum kit aged two, also learning the accordion and piano in childhood, Manu Delago was a professional performer by his teens, but it was in 2003, when he began playing the Hang - an enchanting new sound sculpture from Switzerland - that he discovered his passion for writing music. On graduating from the university Mozarteum in Innsbruck, he moved to London and studied at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity College of Music. With this pedigree, the lessons learned from collaborating with his heroes, and influences from The Prodigy to Bon Iver, Michael Jackson to Stravinsky and Beyonce to Rage against the Machine, his music is as impeccably realised as it is impossible to classify. Delago has featured heavily in the world's media, having toured on six continents and played festivals including Shambala, Green Man, Haldern Pop, Reeperbahn, Eurosonic and Popfest Vienna.

The C100 comes equipped with a diamond-tipped Audio Technica needle to pick up every detail of every cut.

    Perfect Pitch

Adjustable pitch control uses a strobe light beaming onto the platter dots to tame those finicky albums that tweak high or low, giving each note optimum sound.

    No Skate Zone

This curvy s-shaped tonearm is not going to have any of this skating nonsense, preserving your sound, and your precious records.

    Central Flow

More than 18 years since he left the public spotlight, mysterious mad-genius David Baker, legendary frontman of the original incarnation of Mercury Rev, is back with new band Variety Lights. The masterful new album Central Flow, is a collaboration between Baker and fellow vintage synth addict Will MacLean and demonstrates that Baker has lost none of his flair for the extraordinary, the experimental and the exceptional!

As co-founder and vocalist of Mercury Rev, Baker helped to forge their revolutionary sound with their first two (and most critically acclaimed) albums; Yerself Is Steam (1991) and Boces (1993). The band were highly innovative and weren't afraid to experiment but above all they were loud, fun and hugely influential. In the UK, the critics embraced the band enthusiastically, as Chris Roberts in Melody Maker said (in his review of Yerself Is Steam): At last, one of those rare records that revolve along once in a blooming moon and have something new to struggle to say. A daring, brazen, and demented juxtaposition of voice and guitars and timpani flings Mercury Rev, lemming like at your more responsive caches of fear.

Having left the band in 1993, Baker went on to release a solo album World under the moniker Shady, which featured members of the Boo Radleys, Rollerskate Skinny, Swervedriver and Th' Faith Healers. At times soaringly catchy and lightheartedly loony, World is a sonic adventure which Vox described as Awash with fragments of dense noise, stumbling, narcotic-laced tempos and lyrics from outer space that mutate into spiky, bittersweet pop.

Although there has been much speculation about his life during his time away from the public eye, Baker has continued to make recordings and is an avid music fan, working as a producer for various artists. Now he is back, morphed and transmogrified into Variety Lights (a name lifted from Fellini's first film).

When he met MacLean, Baker found a songwriting partner who shared a passion for analogue synths and electronic psychedelia. Their initial live to tape experimentations together revealed just how big, crazy and melodic the two of them could sound, and Variety Lights was born.

Much of Variety Lights' debut was recorded by Baker at his own Over the Trees studio. The sound was created using a mixture of chained around-the-room 80's era midi expanders as well as the duo's collection of vintage keyboards and combining them with an array of drum machines and effected guitars.

In creating Central Flow's sound, Baker says that personal adventure is and always has been the most important thing. Baker and MacLean found themselves using references to colors, pictures and describing film scenes to help them communicate about their music. As in his early work, Baker took a richly layered approach, using multiple vocals in a search to find emotion in noises and sounds.

    PAGAN

    Pressed On Blue Colored Vinyl

Reissued in partnership with Brooklyn's Mixpak Records, "PAGAN" includes two new revisions of tracks highlighted on the LP's original 2016 release, "Sweetness" and the breakthrough single, "Lifted."

PAGAN is already among the most acclaimed dance/electronic releases in recent memory, with Tiny Mix Tapes declaring it minimal pop music to maximal ends... (Palmistry) uses simple synth melodies, antiseptic beats, and a lilting, candid vocal style to craft an emotionally affecting rumination on absence/presence. In stripping these songs back to their essence, he achieves something special, tracing a link to a common musical language and set of experiences...music that is as striking as it is affecting.

    Food

On the one hand, there is Kelis Rogers, who first came to prominence singing the hook of Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1999 hit 'Got Your Money'. This was the visually and sonically compelling 20 year-old whose debut album 'Kaleidoscope' helped usher in the wave of sharp, thrillingly futuristic R&B that dominated the charts in the early Noughties, as exemplified by her global hit, 'Milkshake'.

On the other there is Dave Sitek, guitarist in acclaimed Brooklyn experimentalists TV On The Radio and producer to a certain kind of smart, indie band (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals and Liars to name a few).

'Food' is a startling combination of Kelis' most frank and vulnerable vocals to date, and Sitek's inimitable sonic imprint. Littered with transcendent, Spector-esque lift, warm bottom ends and vast depth, the music is the perfect backdrop for Kelis' unique voice. The latter has only improved with time and experience, and the album candidly explores pain, happiness and everything in between.

Recorded at Sitek's house in LA (and entirely produced by him), Kelis' new album, 'Food,' mints a sound that's rootsy without ever being self-consciously retro, that pitches live horns and gospel organ against electronics, that for all its classic soul and funk influences, couldn't have been made any time but now.
