    TFCF

TFCF, the 8th album from Liars, is another unexpected chapter in the saga of the group. The album's reinvention of the Liars paradigm - blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility - is evidence that Liars' creative energies remain as healthy as ever.

    Soma Records Story: Vol. 3 - A Man's Gotta Be A Man!

The record world was a completely different place in 1965.
Kids wanting to take home a piece of the rock 'n' roll action they frugged to at the Armory dance last weekend or a wild tune they heard the local bossjocks spin on the way home from school, inevitably had to deal with seven-inchers made by independent record labels. The single was the thing in the mid-60's, not the album. In even the hippest big city record emporiums, you could thumb through the entire recorded canon of British Invasion-influenced LPs - no more than a hundred or so - in about five minutes. But, ahhh, those singles. And nobody did them better than the shoebox companies sprouting up like bread mold all over the country, labels who could tap into the best local talent and get their show-stopping songs into the local record shops.

Just about every sector of the US had its own scene, red hot local chart entries that kids three hundred miles away were destined to never hear. And that's why the legendary indie labels - from International Artists in Houston or Autumn in San Francisco to Dunwich in Chicago or Etiquette in Tacoma - and hundreds more just as groovy, are revered today more than ever.

The Soma Record Company of Minneapolis caught the national spotlight by releasing hits from the likes of the Castaways and the Gestures. But Liar Liar and Run, Run, Run are just the tip ofthe iceberg. If you've always suspected that thousands of great singles from the '60s that you've yet to hear are lurking in the bushes, guess what? You're right. Step into the dusty Soma vaults with us - brush aside those cobwebs, if you would - point your flashlight towards the strobelight flickering at the far end of the tunnel and keep walking. When the cool Fender 'n Farfisa sounds finally grab you by the shirt collar, just keep telling yourself: This isn't a dream. It's what I was born to do.

    Mess

"When (Angus) Andrew closes everything down... it's like watching someone rediscover their fearless
approach to art in real time." - Pitchfork on "Mess On A Mission"

Mess is Liars SEVENTH album. This follow up to 2012's WIXIW
is an angry, ecstatic, primal burst of ritualistic synth-rock that
sacrifices self persecution for potent, purposeful abandon.

Explains singer Angus Andrew, "We are a reactionary, or maybe a
better word is schizophrenic band. We go from one extreme to the
other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid,
and that's fine, but it just meant that when work started on this
one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun
    and confident."

Liars' career has seen the band rattle through pigeonholes in an
    attempt to avoid them all together: brittle yet taught punk funk;
    liminal no-wave; ecstatic noise-pop; 21st-century garage rock;
post-millennial post-rock; delicate electronics; reaching here,
where Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross now find
    themselves.

    Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes

Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes starts right where Young Liars left off and propels TV On The Radio into uncharted sonic territory. Herein you will find more undeniably catchy songs with incredible production, arrangements and champion crooning, including some stunning a cappella performances. Featured are nine songs about discordant living, misrepresentation, life, afterlife and love. They're pop songs, they're rock songs, they're art songs, they're whatever you want them to be.

TV On The Radio's popularity and artistic potential has grown consistently from their 2003 EP Young Liars, to this their follow up full length, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and culminated thus far on their latest release Return to Cookie Mountain which was considered by most to be the 2006 album of the year.

    Liar

Remastered From Original Tapes By Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

Originally released in 1992, the Jesus Lizard's Liar set a new standard for noisy, visceral indie rock that has yet to be matched. Fronted by powder-keg vocalist David Yow and featuring one of the tautest rhythm sections ever assembled, the Chicago-based quartet matched tension with physicality, madness with delight, and sheer intensity with nightmarish force. Liar finds the band at its peak, the post-punk music exploding with raw urgency, primal grime, and ferocious emotion. And the mayhem has never been better.

Part of Touch & Go's stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, Liar has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Liar in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. There's greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified mid-range, and an incredible boost in energy. This is as close as it gets to witnessing the Lizard onstage; indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, blunt, or fervent.

From the opening caterwaul of Boilermaker to the auto-parts clang of Gladiator to the twisted rodeo that is Rope, the Lizard utilize dynamics, silences, and textures in ways no group has ever come close to duplicating. Freakish, weird, beautiful, and overwhelmingly influential.

Vinyl packaged in deluxe gatefold album jacket with 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

    Water Liars

Joined by GR Robinson on bass, and fresh off the success of sophomore album Wyoming and the reissue of debut LP Phantom Limb - both released earlier this year - Justin Kinkel-Schuster (vocals, guitar) and Andrew Bryant (drums, vocals) strut into this effort with their feathers out, driven by a need to create. Forget taking years to release a new album; Water Liars don't know how to stop working. These are songs about leaving and staying, about lost fathers and new loves, about distance and memory.

    Young Liars

This is the first release from TV On The Radio and they've been building momentum ever since. The five track EP features the characteristics that the band has since perfected on their subsequent releases; shifting dynamics, dense atmospheres, vocal layering and great production and strong songwriting. Also includes guest contributions from Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Brian Chase (Yeahs Yeah Yeahs).

TV on the Radio devotes a level of attention to complex vocal layering that is rarely seen in American bands at all, much less ones from hipster Brooklyn. Musician/Producer David Andrew Sitek provides the perfect complement, giving each of Adebimpe's excursions a backdrop of surprisingly organic programming.

Liars return in 2010 with their fifth studio album; their boldest and most exhilarating record to date. Sisterworld was written and recorded in Los Angeles by Liars and Tom Biller and is an invigorating summation of their career so far. Phantom Limb

Water Liars is Andrew Bryant and Justin Kinkel-Schuster. They met on tour some time ago and have been friends ever since. Named after the first story in Barry Hannah's collection Airships, Water Liars began by accident in Pittsboro, MS in late 2011. Justin, who previously spent some time in a St. Louis-based band named Theodore, writes the songs and Andrew makes them better.

Their first album Phantom Limb was the product of the aforementioned accident; a collection of songs, recorded without aim over one weekend at Bryant's house in Pittsboro, originally released by Misra Records in March 2012.

Weary mid-western rock-crusted folk from Theodore's Justin Kinkel-Schuster in the vein of Band Of Horses. It is heartbreaking material, especially when savored alone - song's reminiscent of writers like Raymond Carver and Flannery O'Connor.

    WIXIW

Liars have returned with their sixth studio album and follow-up to 2010's critically lauded Sisterworld. WIXIW was recorded in LA and self-produced by the band with additional production from Mute founder Daniel Miller and mixed by Tom Biller. The band worked more collaboratively than on previous recordings and the album got its beginnings when frontman Angus Andrew and bassist Aaron Hemphill moved into an isolated cabin in the mountains to begin writing.

WIXIW is simultaneously the most accessible and the most challenging release from the iconoclastic band, it is both a summation of Liars' work up to now, and a complete break from anything they've done previously. As Angus jokes, If we aren't confusing people, it's not us. If we aren't confusing ourselves with what we do, then we've failed.

The 11-track album's title WIXIW (pronounced "wish you") is explained by Angus, "wish you is a familiar and universal sentiment of longing and hope, but when misspelt becomes uniquely shrouded and difficult to interpret, which in many ways is representative of our music and the songs we wrote for this album." Features the first single No. 1 Against The Rush. 180g vinyl pressing with accompanying CD.

    Wyoming

Water Liars, the duo of Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Andrew Bryant, present their sophomore album Wyoming. Recorded in their now-hometown of Water Valley, MS in late September, Wyoming will be Water Liars' second LP released in just under a year. At the core of the album are stories of specific, intimate moments that can't help but ring universally true. The band favors simplicity and ample space in their songs, while Justin Kinkel-Schuster's clear, plaintive vocals add to Wyoming's warm yet heartsick expanse. The album ranges musically from contemplative, bluesy waltzes (Backbone) to lonely, tempered howls (Fake Heat); from soulful, heartached swings (Cut A Line, You Work Days I Work Nights) to upbeat, but wistful resignations (Linens). These 11 uncluttered songs resonate all the way from the breezy, buzzing opener Sucker to the closing feedback of Fire.

    Food

On the one hand, there is Kelis Rogers, who first came to prominence singing the hook of Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1999 hit 'Got Your Money'. This was the visually and sonically compelling 20 year-old whose debut album 'Kaleidoscope' helped usher in the wave of sharp, thrillingly futuristic R&B that dominated the charts in the early Noughties, as exemplified by her global hit, 'Milkshake'.

On the other there is Dave Sitek, guitarist in acclaimed Brooklyn experimentalists TV On The Radio and producer to a certain kind of smart, indie band (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals and Liars to name a few).

'Food' is a startling combination of Kelis' most frank and vulnerable vocals to date, and Sitek's inimitable sonic imprint. Littered with transcendent, Spector-esque lift, warm bottom ends and vast depth, the music is the perfect backdrop for Kelis' unique voice. The latter has only improved with time and experience, and the album candidly explores pain, happiness and everything in between.

Recorded at Sitek's house in LA (and entirely produced by him), Kelis' new album, 'Food,' mints a sound that's rootsy without ever being self-consciously retro, that pitches live horns and gospel organ against electronics, that for all its classic soul and funk influences, couldn't have been made any time but now.

    War On Women

Baltimore, MD co-ed feminist punk act War On Women have announced their debut full-length, War On Women. Featuring 11 tracks, this S/T record was recently recorded with J. Robbins at the Magpie Cage (Against Me!, Coliseum, Lemuria). These new tracks are a natural progression for the band and a little more polished than their previous efforts, while remaining as blistering as ever. Vocalist Shawna Potter has …plenty of material to pull from when it comes to writing lyrics, considering the pervasive sexism in modern America, she commented.

War On Women formed in 2010 by several veterans of the Baltimore rock scene, including members of AVEC and Liars Academy. Describing their sound as thrash rock meets riot grrrl, War On Women write songs too inventive and too loud to be overshadowed by their equally powerful messages. The band's furious live sets capture all of the brevity and intensity of hardcore punk with another level of lyrical and musical sophistication. War On Women's songs attack sexist attitudes and institutionalized patriarchy women everywhere still face in the 21st century with humor, intelligence, righteous anger and monster riffs.

    The Magic Door

The fruits of the band's hard-charging January of 2012 recording session with producer Thom Monahan are heard not only on Big Moon Ritual but in its companion album The Magic Door, set for release in the fall of 2012. Each album spotlights seven tunes, with The Magic Door containing six originals: Someday Past The Sunset, Vibration & Light Suite, Appaloosa, Little Lizzie Mae, Sorrows of a Blue Eyed Liar and Wheel Don't Roll plus a cover of Hank Ballard's Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go, a CRB set list staple.

Chris Robinson (lead, vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Adam MacDougall (keys, vocals), George Sluppick (drums) and Mark Dutton (bass, vocals) create exciting musical sparks throughout The Magic Door. We really feel these records set the stage for another full year, where we'll see how far we can go with it, says Robinson. We already feel successful because we have the freedom to do what we want. And it's always cosmic. The times demand it. Gatefold vinyl from Silver Arrow/MRI Entertainment.

    Blank Generation

Richard Hell was one of the first men on the scene when punk rock first began to emerge in New York City as an early member of both Television and the Heartbreakers (he left both groups before they could record), but his own version of punk wasn't much like anyone else's, and while Hell's debut album, Blank Generation, remains one of the most powerful to come from punk's first wave, anyone expecting a Ramones/Dead Boys-style frontal assault from this set had better readjust their expectations.

Love Comes in Spurts and Liar's Beware proved the Voidoids could play fast and loud when they wanted to, but for the most part this group's formula was much more complicated than that; guitarists Robert Quine and Ivan Julian bounced sharp, edgy patterns off each other that were more about psychological tension than brute force (though Quine's solos suggest a fragile grace beneath the surface of their neo-Beefheart chaos), and while most punk nihilism was of the simplistic Everything Sucks variety, Hell was (with the exception of Patti Smith) the most literate and consciously poetic figure in the New York punk scene.

While there's little on the album that's friendly or life-affirming, there's a crackling intelligence to songs like New Pleasure, Betrayal Takes Two, and Another World that confirmed Hell has a truly unique lyrical voice, at once supremely self-confident and dismissive of nearly everything around him (sometimes including himself). Brittle and troubling, but brimming with ideas and musical intelligence, Blank Generation was groundbreaking punk rock that followed no one's template, and today it sounds just as fresh -- and nearly as abrasive -- as it did when it first hit the racks.

    The Fool

Warpaint, the all-girl quartet from Los Angeles, weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like theyre channelling something truly otherworldly, mystical. The Fool is their utterly mesmeric debut full-length album on Rough Trade Records and follows-up 2009s Exquisite Corpse EP.

The Fool was produced and mixed by Tom Biller (Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon) in Los Angeles, with further mixes from Andrew Weatherall (Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream) and Adam Samuels (John Frusciante, Daniel Lanois). Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums).

One of the years most promising new acts, Warpaint construct mysterious songs that pair the rhythmic chug of Pylon with the otherworldly eeriness of Throwing Muses. - Rolling Stone

    Little Joy (On Sale)

Little Joy is the third full-length release from the Melbourne, Australia trio My Disco. As always with My Disco, the most fascinating and unique element to their sound is space; long, deep, sometimes scary space. Their defiance of rock music's time-worn tropes is what defines them, and Little Joy explores and expands on that concept, stretching a naked few instruments to transform short blasts into heavy, rhythmic, meditative body music.

The bare bones of a drum beat, a rumbling bass, one repeated phrase and some bursts of feedback add up to a wholly compelling world of sounds between sounds. Shards of vaguely recognizable post-punk riffs fuse pounding, euphoric rhythms to hypnotic, almost psychedelic vocal mantras. The result is a new take on an old idea that occupies the unlikely space between Boredoms, The Necks, Wire and Liars.

Recorded by Steve Albini and mixed by Scott Horscroft, My Disco's minimalist instincts are perfectly suited for Albini's famously austere productions and Horscroft's textured, pop-leaning sensibilities. This unlikely marriage is at the heart of Little Joy's success. It's the sound of a band using the fewest tools to create the greatest range of possibilities, a record both expansive and minimal, a compressed expression of vast emotions.

    Coranach

Were there a United Nations of Punk, the trilateral union of nationalities in Cross Stitched Eyes would make an excellent security council. Not only do they collaborate across American, German, and English boundaries, but they would probably scare rogue nations into submission.
Rightly compared to Amebix, Rudimentary Peni, and Killing Joke, Cross Stitched Eyes, formed in 2005, breathe new life into the anarcho-crust genre. Drummer and vo- calist Jason Willer played in Lookout Records' Enemies (with Dave Ed of Neurosis), The UK Subs, and Drain the Sky; guitarist Tim Crow was in Sworn Liars, Zygote, Bad Influence, and Smart Pils; and guitarist Chris Hutto played in Black Mass. Rounding out the rhythmic pedigree is bassist Mr. Stevie of Tourette Syndrome and Anger of Bacteria, plus Subhumans (UK) drummer Trotsky. All this name-dropping and reference-checking only matters insofar as the music kicks ass with a steel-toed boot.

After releasing a 7-inch on Ruin Nation and an album on Active, Cross Stitched Eyes pack fourteen short but perfectly compact songs together for their Alternative Tentacles debut. Unafraid to let loose with noise damage on Substance or get melodic with Breath of Lies, the band shows a diversity of styles on Coranach. Dirgey and doom-y elements abound and the sound quality surpasses the muddy fidelity of the band's predecessors.
