    While remaining largely unknown to the general public, Peter Walker was something of a legend along the Boston-New York folk axis of the 1960s, releasing a few celebrated albums for Vanguard during this period. Playing with various folk luminaries like Fred Neil, Joan Baez, Tim Hardin and Karen Dalton, and studying Spanish flamenco and Indian classical guitar with none other than Ravi Shankar, Walker was both a true student of his instrument and a pioneer, using not only acoustic guitar, but, as can be heard on this album, also electric. Recorded in 1970 at Levon Helm's (The Band) house in Woodstock, with the likes of legendary Detroit drummer Maruga Booker and tabla god Badal Roy, this is an essential release for fans.

    Another Life

    James Maddock affirms his status as a fixture in downtown Manhattan's folk and Americana scene with his album 'Another Life.' As NPR says of the British transplant, "his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy."


    Nodding to '70s rock with shimmering acoustic guitars, an understated rhythm section and flourishes of fiddle, mandolin, piano and dobro, 'Another Life' bridges the mainstream appeal of songwriters like Jesse Harris and Norah Jones and the quirkier sensibility of Loudon Wainwright. With funding entirely from fan contributions through PledgeMusic, Maddock worked with producer Matt Pierson, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (who's played with Bob Dylan and Levon Helm) and bassist Tony Scherr (who plays with Norah Jones).


    The 13 songs on 'Another Life' paint a portrait of a man reaching the midpoint of his life, a natural progression from themes in Maddock's earlier releases. He's looking back on roads not taken, and isn't always sure he chose the right one. On the title track, Maddock wants an extra 50 years to try "acting, white-water rafting," "some illegal substances," even having a kid or three. "I've Been There Too," built around an indelible guitar riff, shows Maddock's knack for instrumental hooks as well as lyrical ones. "Don't Go Lonely," in a well-timed moment of levity, hints at reggae with dub bass, bubbling organ and the chorus's entreaty to "go get high, go get found, go crazy on this town / don't go lonely."


    After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood, whose debut 'Songs From Stamford Hill' was featured prominently on TV shows such as "Dawson's Creek," Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album 'Sunrise On Avenue C' won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album, while follow-up 'Wake Up And Dream' ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. He's performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows), sang on an album with Susan McKeown, and is a resident artist at Rockwood Music Hall. According to radio legend Vin Scelsa, Maddock's heartbreakingly beautiful and exquisitely crafted music touches the soul.

    Where I've Been

    "I think this is the best work we've ever done," explains JD & The Straight Shot founder and frontman Jim Dolan of the band's latest release, Where I've Been. "I'm so proud of the music that my band and I have put together. I believe in this album."


    Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I've Been features several breakthrough singles including "Governor's Song," which challenges some of today's most well-known political figures; "Under That Hood," a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and "Hard to Find," which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.


    Dolan's day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees New York sports teams such as the Knicks and the Rangers. Music is his passion.


    "I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating," says Dolan. "Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don't actually set up cable and I don't really shoot hoops," he says, laughing. "Music is something I've played since I was a kid. It's me purely expressing myself."


    JD & The Straight Shot's creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), who pen all the band's music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensable is guitarist Aidan Dolan; keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); and drummer Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes). Also part of the band are some of pop music's finest session players, bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride).


    Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four previous albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can't Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide (2005) - as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).


    The band's style is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic, New Orleans-flavored roots music - topped off with a dash of the classic rock of Dolan's youth.


    "I grew up on bands like the Allman Brothers," says Dolan. "We played those records until the grooves wore right off of them."


    JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on "Good Day New York." Their song "Can't Make Tears" is the theme song for AMC's TV show Hell on Wheels, and their music has been featured in many films, including the critically acclaimed August: Osage County.


    The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the current "History of the Eagles" tour, the "Summer 2010" tour, and the band's stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. JD & The Straight Shot has also opened up for both Joe Walsh and Don Henley's solo tours, the James Gang reunion tour, and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Austin City Limits.

    Anyway You Love, We Know How You Feel

    The Chris Robinson Brotherhood have announced the release of their fourth studio album, Anyway You Love, We Know How You Feel, via Robinson's own Silver Arrow Records. The band relocated to northern California for the sessions, recording on the side of a mountain overlooking the foggy Pacific Ocean and channeling the natural majesty of their surroundings into the album's eight sprawling tracks. Having spent the prior two years touring relentlessly, the CRB were road-tested and in peak form to capture their kinetic chemistry and immersive sound, which Uncut Magazine called, " a celebration of how American musical traditions can be at once honored and psychedelically expanded."


    "It was an opportunity to see where our expression could take us. For us, when it comes to making records, the looser it gets the better," says Robinson. "It's all about taking our intuition and following it to where our ideas can really manifest themselves. This turned out to be the most spontaneous record I've ever been a part of."


    Indeed, when the Chris Robinson Brotherhood entered the studio to begin recording the album, no one knew just what to expect. These would be the band's first recordings with new drummer Tony Leone (Ollabelle, Levon Helm) and their first time producing themselves. Robinson purposely left as much open-ended as possible. Rather than coming into the studio with a collection of finished songs as he had in the past, he would present the group with sketches-a verse and melody here, a chorus and chord progression there-and let the band follow its collective muse to bring the music to life. They'd lean into the improvisational nature that makes their live shows such enthralling spectacles and thrive on the unexpected.


    "All it takes is one good, small idea, and then if everyone's focused and in the moment, a few hours later, you can have something that you realize you'll be playing for as long as you're making music," Robinson continues. "I think when everyone's aware that that's the sort of magic that we're looking for. More than any other session that I've ever been a part of, that's how all of these songs were done."


    The album kicks off with "Narcissus Soaking Wet," a psychedelic toe-tapper that marks Robinson's first co-write with keyboardist Adam MacDougall. It touches on everything from Dylan and Parliament Funkadelic to psych rock and Chicago rhythm and blues. "Ain't It Hard But Fair" calls to mind the soulful Americana of The Band, while "Oak Apple Day" is a mediation on life in the CRB, and "Forever As The Moon" came together in a stream of consciousness between The CRB's lead guitarist Neal Casal and Robinson. "Leave My Guitar Alone" was a song Robinson had been sitting on for nearly 15 years, but only once he presented it to the rest of the band did it roar to life in a way that had eluded him for more than a decade. Some of Robinson's finest writing to date arrives in the album's final minutes, with the country-soul, gospel-tinged closer "California Hymn," which finds him singing "Glory glory hallelujah / It's time to spread the news / Though my good words may sound profane to some."


    The Chris Robinson Brotherhood emerged in 2011 by playing close to 50 shows over nine weeks in California before ever leaving the Golden State or officially releasing music. Their introduction on the national stage came in 2012 when they'd release not one, but two acclaimed full-length albums within a few months of each other. Critics hailed their sprawling debut, Big Moon Ritual, as a revelation, with The Independent raving that Robinson had "finally found the ideal vehicle to indulge his taste for 'Cosmic California Music.'" The reviews were similarly ecstatic for its immediate follow-up, The Magic Door, which was praised by Relix as "classic rock in the finest sense." The band's epic tour schedule brought their shimmering acid-Americana around the world for a staggering 118-date tour, firmly establishing the CRB as the new standard-bearers of the psychedelic roots torch. In 2014, they returned to the studio for Phosphorescent Harvest, a masterful collection that showcased the blossoming songwriting partnership between Robinson and Neal Casal. Rolling Stone raved that the album was "electrifying boast[ing] a vintage rock vibe that's at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic," and Guitar World called it "a treasure trove of soul that advances the band's bluesy, kaleidoscopic sound."

    Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes - many found only recently - this three-LP set includes 38 highlights of Dylan's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band.


    Among Bob Dylan's many cultural milestones, the legendary Basement Tapes have long fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics alike. Having transformed music and culture during the early 1960s, Dylan reached unparalleled heights across 1965 and 1966 through the release of three historic albums, the groundbreaking watershed single ''Like A Rolling Stone,'' a controversial and legendary 'electric' performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and wildly polarizing tours of the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Dylan's mercurial rise and prodigious outpouring of work during that decade came to an abrupt halt in July 1966 when he was reported to have been in a serious motorcycle accident in upstate New York.


    Recovering from his injuries and away from the public eye for the first time in years, Dylan ensconced himself, along with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and, later, Levon Helm, in the basement of a small house, dubbed ''Big Pink'' by the group, in West Saugerties, New York. This collective, which would come to be known as Bob Dylan and The Band, recorded more than a hundred songs over the next several months including traditional covers, wry and humorous ditties, off-the cuff performances and, most important, dozens of newly-written Bob Dylan songs, including future classics ''I Shall Be Released,'' ''The Mighty Quinn,'' ''This Wheel's On Fire'' and ''You Ain't Going Nowhere.''


    When rumors and rare acetates of some of these recordings began surfacing, it created a curiosity strong enough to fuel an entirely new segment of the music business: the bootleg record. In 1969, an album mysteriously titled Great White Wonder began showing up in record shops around the country, and Dylan's music from the summer of 1967 began seeping into the fabric of popular culture, penetrating the souls of music lovers everywhere. With each passing year, more and more fans sought out this rare contraband, desperate to hear this new music from the legendary Bob Dylan.


    The actual recordings, however, remained commercially unavailable until 1975, when Columbia Records released a scant 16 of them on The Basement Tapes album (that album also included eight new songs by The Band, without Dylan).


    A critical and popular success, The Basement Tapes went Top 10 in the US and UK, with John Rockwell, of The New York Times, calling it ''one of the greatest albums in the history of American popular music,'' Paul Nelson, in Rolling Stone, praising the tracks as ''the hardest, toughest, sweetest, saddest, funniest, wisest songs I know'' and the Washington Post noting that ''...Dylan has to rank as the single greatest artist modern American pop music has produced.'' Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ rating in the Village Voice, where it topped the annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.

    Arriving at a crucial time for both Dylan and The Band, Before the Flood is the furthest thing possible from a nostalgia trip. It's where Dylan begins his now-trademark feat of turning songs upside-down, taking risks, surprising and challenging expectations, leaving audiences riveted to the edge of their seats in anticipation of what might come next. But, where everybody was in a huddle on both Big Pink and The Band, with Stage Fright it didn't feel like we were all connected in the same kind of way. In this period of experimentation in life, in music, in drugs, people kept wanting to stretch and reach and go somewhere and try things and, in the course of that, some real alienation can take place as well.     Such splintered camaraderie and personal demons appear in now-famous songs such as the title track, "The Shape I'm In," and "The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show." The music is rife with palpable tension, and as a credit to the Band's unique sound, absolutely singular. It's impossible to think of any other group playing these tunes. Robertson's balladic ode to his daughter, "All La Glory," featuring a gorgeous vocal turn from Levon Helm, provides a sunny contrast to the darker compositions.


    Circumstances behind the recording sessions also reflected the mood. While the Band had intended to capture the album in one take in front of a small crowd at the theater, the town residents vetoed the idea due to concerns over being inundated by too many visitors. Consequently, the Band played to an audience of no one, sometimes with the curtains closed and other times, with them open. Todd Rundgren, who engineered the album, couldn't even see what was going on-he was sitting in a canvas prop tent that became the control room, behind the theater.


    As always, Mobile Fidelity half-speed mastered this numbered limited-edition 180g LP from the original master tapes for a superior sonic experience. This analog edition of Stage Fright bursts with supreme tonal clarity and an airiness that brings the genius of Rundgren's preservation of high frequencies to complete realization. Even the fine textures of the hand drums on the stunning "Daniel and the Sacred Harp" come to light with microscopic detail. Perfectly blended, MoFi's Stage Fright takes its place as the most balanced and punchy record in the Band's oeuvre.

    Before 2011's 'King of In Between' Garland Jeffreys went thirteen years without releasing any new music. Since that album, which top critics like Ann Powers, Robert Christgau and Ken Tucker hailed as among the best of his career, Jeffreys has performed on Letterman, toured the US and Europe extensively, and written over 50 new songs, some of which will appear on his new album 'Truth Serum,' a stripped down, politically charged cri de coeur to be released September 17 on Luna Park Records with marketing services and distribution through Thirty Tigers. A full national tour will follow, kicking off September 23 at Rockwood2 in NYC, and including performances at McCabe's in Santa Monica, Old Town School of Folk in Chicago and more.


    'Truth Serum' was produced by Jeffreys with production support by James Maddock and Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), with backing from some of NYC's top session musicians: Steve Jordan (drums), Zev Katz (bass), Duke Levine (guitar) and Brian Mitchell (keys). Impressionistic and brimming with urgency, the album's ten songs grew out of material culled from over 75 unlabeled, cassette tapes - Jeffreys' preferred platform for capturing inspiration. "The obsessions, the imagery, the things I care most about were all on those cassettes," he says. "I love their compression and ragged feel."


    Though Jeffreys has been releasing music since the 1960s, and recently celebrated his 70th birthday, he has never been busier or more prolific. "This record is a kind of Rorschach of me, the boiled down essence of where I am today," he explains. "I'm secretly longing for brotherhood, harmony, justice, and discouraged by how rarely that happens in the world."

    I Can Never Go Home Anymore is one of the most brilliant songs from the Red Bird archives with a neat and rare live version on a Murray the K Presents sampler. This essay of teen rebellion and running away -- written by eventual producer of the New York Dolls, George Shadow Morton -- is the ultimate in despondency; just listen to the gorgeous backing vocals of Hush little baby which lead up to the solitary cry of mama and the spoken-word verses; it's totally brilliant pop music that is sadly absent on oldies radio in the new millennium. This album is chock-full of consummate power pop, sublime confections with lots of minor keys sprinkled throughout. The Train From Kansas City is one of the five solid Barry/Greenwich tunes that make up almost half of the album -- those five produced by Jeff Barry and Morton. There are three different production credits on the 12 tracks and each is as compelling as What's a Girl Supposed to Do or Ike Turner's I'm Blue. A cover of the Shields' 1958 hit You Cheated, You Lied is a perfect selection; though credited to Levon Helm, the song was actually written by Don Burch, according to an excellent website for the Band. The girl group connoisseurs know that the Shangri-Las are among the greatest of the genre; this version of the album with the two hits is as listenable as the classic Phil Spector/Ronettes LP and just as underrated as this female quartet. Opening with the deliciously exquisite Right Now and Not Later, which is produced by two of that song's composers, Ronald Moseley and Robert Bateman, the album just keeps generating catchy melodies with songs about boys from the '60s, their street gangs, and the constant dilemma these four gals face when dating them. Notoriously wonderful.

    On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band took the stage for the very last time at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco for THE LAST WALTZ, which has gone on to become one of the most heralded performances of all time. Joining The Band on stage throughout the evening was an unprecedented group of pioneers in music including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, among others.


    The Band, more than any other group, put rock and roll back in touch with its roots. With their ageless songs and solid grasp of musical idioms, the Band reached across the decades, making connections for a generation that was, as an era of violent cultural schisms wound down, in desperate search of them. They projected a sense of community in the turbulent late Sixties and early Seventies - a time when the fabric of community in the United States was fraying.


    Guitarist Robbie Robertson drew from history in his evocative, cinematic story-songs, and the vocal triumvirate of bassist Rick Danko, drummer Levon Helm and keyboardist Richard Manuel joined in rustic harmony and traded lines in rich, conversational exchanges. Multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson provided musical coloration in period styles that evoked everything from rural carnivals of the early 20th century to rock and roll revues of the Fifties.
