    The second of his MGM trilogy-1967's peculiarly named Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure-took on countrified French ye-ye ("The Girls In Paris"), a tale of a young bullfighter built on Spanish guitar and choral cowboys ("Jose"), a string-drenched song about the passing of time ("The Old Man And His Guitar"), and a western epic about a Native American tribe ("The Nights"). And that was just the first four tracks. Elsewhere, the honky tonk madness of "Suzi Jane Is Back In Town," the Byrds-like jangle of "In Our Time" and-in the bonus tracks-an instrumental named "Batman" confirm this to be one of Hazlewood's most far-ranging, far-out LPs ever!

    13 was never supposed to be a Lee Hazlewood album. It is perhaps the strangest record in one of the most varied discographies in music. The bombastic brass-heavy funk, deep blues and soul paired with Hazlewood's subterranean baritone would be best enjoyed with a tall Chivas in an off-strip seedy Vegas lounge. It also features one of Hazlewood's greatest lines ever "One week in San Francisco, existing on Nabisco, cookies and bad dreams, sad scenes and dodging paranoia."


    By 1972 Lee Hazlewood had settled in his new homeland of Sweden. His days were spent carousing, making movies with Torbjörn Axelman and releasing albums. To keep up his prolific recorded output, Lee began to mine the recently defunct LHI Records archives for material. One such gem, was an unreleased album by Larry Marks.


    In what became the final days of LHI, staff producer Larry Marks' sonic fingerprints were on nearly everything; songwriting, producing, arranging, and singing. His most profound contribution was steering the creative direction of the label towards soul and R&B, arranging the downright funky LHI singles by Barbara Randolph and Jon Christian. Larry's concept was to take Hazlewood's strongest compositions and arrange them in a soul vibe. An album was completed, but with no distribution in America and no funding, Lee had no vehicle to release Larry's record. The tapes were taken to Sweden, Larry's voice was wiped and Hazlewood's was dubbed .13 was born.

    Something Special

    The three years spent on MGM Records between 1966 and 1968 were golden ones for Lee Hazlewood. He spent them working with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom, writing a still-unreleased book, The Quiet Revenge of Elmo Furback, competing with Phil Spector from their respective studios, and coming up with the formula for the boy/girl" songs for which he'd become famous. In fact, the unflattering portrait on the cover of Something Special did little to hint at how hip this late-flowering talent (he was in his late 30s when "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" made him a star songwriter) had become.


    The common strand on the MGM trilogy is one of the unexpected happening. They were an ill fit for a major label-experimental, difficult to pigeonhole, and unpredictable. Those descriptors apply nowhere more aptly than Something Special. Where 1966's The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood and 1967's Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure had employed an arranger, Billy Strange, and a full orchestra, Something Special stripped things back and brought in a flavor of jazz and blues, complete with gravelly-voiced scatting courtesy of collaborator Don Randi. This sat alongside tracks like "Little War" and "Hands," the kind of late night, acoustic balladeering Hazlewood would later seize for his career-highlight LP, Requiem For An Almost Lady. The sound was that of a stripped-down nightclub jazz/blues/folk combo, fully rejecting the psychedelic music going on all over the world.


    The album made clear that forging a career as a serious star was not at the top of Hazlewood's agenda, and at the third opportunity, he'd let the listener in on the joke. Tellingly, Hokom recalls Hazlewood saying the MGM albums were his "expensive demos. I'm sure that MGM thought that they would be successful." Little chance of that with Something Special -it was originally released only in Germany. The same year, Hazlewood founded the LHI imprint, and began building his own empire, one we've been lovingly archiving for the past few years. We now present this missing link in the story, three albums that generated some of Hazlewood's best-and most varied-work.

    The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood

    Lee Hazlewood was a late bloomer. Following a meandering career as a disc jockey, producer, songwriter, label executive and solo artist, Hazlewood hit the jackpot at the ripe age of 37 with "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," the song Nancy Sinatra took to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Its success convinced MGM Records that Hazlewood was a bankable star, and they signed him as an artist in his own right the same year. But as a self-described "non-singer" whose cult 1963 debut, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, was little more than a happy accident, they'd perhaps gotten the wrong end of the stick where Lee was concerned.


    In three years on the label, Hazlewood delivered three albums and sundry odds and ends, beginning with 1966 album The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood. The LP found Hazlewood gunning-in as much as he ever did-for commercial success, blending country, pop, novelty, mariachi, and lounge music into something unusually of-the-moment.


    Lushly orchestrated and-like the album that preceded it-half-sung, half-spoken in a way that Hazlewood made all his own, the album collected solo versions of songs made famous by Sinatra and others ("Sand," "Boots," "So Long Babe," "Summer Wine"-included as a bonus duet with Suzi Jane Hokom) alongside some of his career-best solo compositions, among them the Morricone-like opener, "For One Moment." It's a record of extremes: "When A Fool Loves A Fool" is as light and throwaway as anything he ever laid down, while the wistful "My Autumn's Done Come" (sample lyric: "Let those I-don't-care days come in, I'm tired of holding my stomach in") is as raw and honest.

    British band Tindersticks formed in 1991, renowned for their orchestral sound and their vocalist Stuart A. Staples' characteristic baritone.     Trouble Is A Lonesome Town

    THRIFTSTORE MASTERPIECE is a revolving music collective devoted to paying homage to the
    underdog records of years past. The debut album revisits Lee Hazlewood's 1963 lost classic Trouble
    Is A Lonesome Town and features Pete Yorn, Frank Black (Pixies), Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse),
    Courtney Taylor-Taylor (The Dandy Warhols), Eddie Argos (Art Brut), the late Larry Norman and more.


    In 1963, Lee Hazlewood released his debut album Trouble is a Lonesome Town to little fanfare. It
    was a collection of solo acoustic songs stitched together with a narrative that described life in a
    fictional small town inhabited by outlaws, thieves, and down-and-out laborers. The album was hokey,
    but hip. Corny, but cool. It evoked a bygone era of pastoral American towns and their sometimes seedy underbellies, somewhat like a darker version of the Andy Griffith Show or a more sinister
    Prairie Home Companion. More importantly, it was a fully realized concept album that predated
    the trend that is so common in today' s music world. Hazlewood had originally intended the songs
    as demos for his publisher, in hopes that other artists might someday record them. A half century
    later, the music collective known as THRIFTSTORE MASTERPIECE has done exactly that.


    Producer I band leader Charles Normal explains I first came across the record around the turn of the
    millennium while living in Oslo, Norway. I found it in a secondhand junk shop and it struck a nostalgic
    note somewhere within me. It made me homesick for the panoply of Americana I had experienced
    while slumming it in the Southwestern border towns and California desert whistle stops I drifted
    through when I first started playing music on the road. The record didn't leave my turntable for
    months. Years later, I started to envision the record as a more orchestrated statement and began
    recording the basic tracks in my studio.


    My brother, singer Larry Norman, lent his voice to a couple of the tracks, but when he passed away
    from a heart attack in 2008 I fell into a deep funk and put the project on the back burner. I couldn't
    bring myself to harmonize with his vocals ... it was just too emotional to deal with. It wasn't until much
    later, prompted in part by Isaac Brock, that I dusted off the tapes and hard drives and began to finish
    it. I went through my address book and started calling friends who happened to be in possession of
    great voices to see if they were interested in joining in.

Long before Anar read this poem or heard of the poet, this was the way he approached songwriting.     Rowland S. Howard started playing in teenage bands in late
    70s Melbourne. Whilst still a callow youth he wrote "Shivers," an
    undisputed classic, (quietly ignoring the fact that Rowland perhaps
    doesn't see it that way and approaches the song as if it was written
    by someone else). The song was recorded by his band The Boys Next
    Door who mutated into the Birthday Party and then relocated to
    Europe to wage a guerrilla campaign against the trivialities of the
    80s, until they turned their fire upon themselves and disintegrated
    mid-decade.


    Whilst his former associates have moved on to weekend colour
    supplement acceptability, Rowland has commonly been perceived
    as the banished wastrel prince... exiled to a squalid garret on the
    colder edges of the kingdom, accompanied only by his dreams and
    inclinations. His demeanour (pale, gaunt, stick thin, sickly, dark
    humoured, fatalistic) has perhaps inadvertently added far too much
    credence to this interpretation of events. The shadow of this myth
    has seemingly obscured the sheer volume of his creativity and the
    singularity of his musical vision.


    Always respected by his peers, a scan through Rowland's
    catalogue of work sees him allied with the likes of Lydia Lunch,
    Thurston Moore, Wim Wenders, Barry Adamson, The Gun Club, Nikki
    Sudden, the Beasts Of Bourbon, the Hungry Ghosts and HTRK.
    Rowland's own ensemble These Immortal Souls gun their engines
    in the ill-lit background and the legacy of his work with The Birthday
    Party scores the skin of successive generations of musicians and
    fans.


    But it's a history Rowland would gleefully put a match to. With or
    without it Rowland S. Howard would make tense, beautiful music,
    would deliver us his personal vision of the world, would create Pop
    Crimes.


    Long-time faithful friends Mick Harvey (who played with Rowland
    for over 30 years), JP Shilo (Hungry Ghosts) and producer Lindsay
    Gravina make for a formidable backline. Out front the guitar playing
    couldn't be any one else but Rowland S Howard and his weary,
    almost journalistic vocal delivery dispassionately sits amidst the
    sweaty panic of the music, adding to the ill ease.


    The band lurch in to Pop Crimes as if dragging a rain soaked body
    across a muddy field. The ghosts of Lee Hazlewood, Snatch, Sergio
    Leone, The Shangri-Las and nameless guys from a never known chain
    gang watch on. Within the first few breaths Rowland references
    Stalin, Calvary and genocide, whilst razoring guitar lines the current
    crop of post-punk revisionists could only fantasize about.


    "Shut Me Down" is Rowland at his most romantic, though
    inevitably it's shot through with loss and longing. If only Dusty
    Springfield were alive to revel in its drama. Talk Talk's 'Life's What
    You Make It' is re-imagined as if it had risen from the grind of a
    Detroit auto plant's assembly line. '(I Know) A Girl Called Johnny'
    sees Jonnine D from HTRK sidle up to the microphone for a duet
    that will melt even the coldest of hearts. It's a glorious missing link
    between the New York girl group sound and the street smarts of
    Suicide. Townes Van Zandt's "Nothin" is given a chilling tenement

    alarm sirens before Rowland emerges at his most contemplative
    with the gorgeous, fragile build of "Ave Maria." Final track "The
    Golden Age Of Bloodshed" takes the album out on a swaggering,
    swashbuckling epic, with salvation slipping through the narrator's
    fingers.
