    ...And The Circus Leaves Town

Kyuss' fourth release is entitled ...And the Circus Leaves Town, and apparently it took whatever it was that made their previous release so compelling with it. The band still opts for a bottom-heavy, filling-rattling assault, but they also try to create songs that aren't really there. By containing their thundering ambitions to more bite-size (five- to six-minute) chunks, this record constantly comes up short. Tracks like Gloria Lewis and Phototropic never seem to get started. There are still some worthy moments. One Inch Man is a heavy-boogie stomp with wah-wah guitar work from Josh Homme, and Catamaran is interesting. However, this band has proven to have a sound far too big to be contained by conventional song lengths, and it's a waste for them to try. Kyuss' music works best when it's given room to sprawl out and unfold like on the closing Spaceship Landing, the track on this album that most resembles their work on Welcome to Sky Valley. ...And the Circus Leaves Town isn't a bad record. It still bears the band's unique stamp.

BRANT BJORK, as cult figure of the Palm Desert scene, was founder / drummer of the now defunct Stoner-Rock legends Kyuss and is a permanent member of Vista Chino (formerly KYUSS Lives!). Now, he is sailing under his own flag, proving once again that his multi-instrumental skills know no creative boundaries. With his excellent occupied Low Desert Punk Band, Bjork lets the scorching heat of Nevada shimmer in his songs. He also scrubs his guitar through all sorts of psychedelic effect pedals and skillfully mixes Stoner Rock, Blues and Doom-bonds to a feverish hazy brew.

    00 Void (Awaiting Repress)

00 Void (also known as Double-O Void) is the second album recorded by Sunn O))) circa 2000. At that time, guitarists and core members Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson were joined by guest bassist collaborator Stuart Dahlquist (Burning Witch, Goatsnake). 00 Void also features some incredible contributions from both Petra Haden (violinist/vocalist) and Pete Stahl (vocals). Their melodic evocations are seamlessly woven within this thick sonic tapestry.

The group approached the compositions of this album in a different way than their previous recordings, each member focused intently on one composition/song and brought it into the recording session. Then, each of the songs were translated to the other members and nuances were worked out on the spot in the studio. This Sunn O))) album was recorded to 24-track, on 2 tape, at Grandmaster studios in Hollywood, CA, a large step forward in production values from the band's debut recording, The Grimmrobe Demos.

Fellow sub-sonic enthusiast Scott Reeder (Obsessed, Kyuss, Goatsnake) captured that particular incantaion of Sunn O))) on huge reels of tape. The record has now come back home to its proper resting place, via Southern Lord, featuring beautiful artwork from Stephen Kasner and package execution by Stephen O'Malley. 180g double vinyl deluxe version with Stoughton gatefold jacket and full color printed inner-sleeves.

Re-issue of the bands seminal 2000 album Dopethrone!!! Probably the bands dirtiest, heaviest and most extreme release to date; cited by many as the pinnacle of their career. Often described as the heaviest band in the world; Dopethrone may well give you a clue as to why!

    Sasquanaut

As I said a handful of reviews ago, it's always refreshing when I come across an album that doesn't reek of the usual influences. Enter Columbus, Ohio's Lo Pan, who eschews the Kyuss-Sabbath-Queens of the Stone Age trifecta for that of Boston's Only Living Witness.

Most of that stems from vocalist Jeff Martin, who's a dead ringer for OLW frontman Jonah Jenkins. But that's not to say that the rest of the band - Brian Fristoe, J. Bartz, and Skot Thompson - isn't that far removed from the Innocents and Prone Mortal Form hardcore-meets-rock riff slinging. There's definitely a correlation between Sasquanaut's ''Dragline'' and ''Kramer'' and OLW's ''Total Particle Reversal'' and ''December.''

Mind you, I'm not complaining. In the wild, woolly world of stoner rock, there are more than enough bands dishing out the prerequisite fat riffs and thick grooves. It's refreshing to hear a rock band that balances a harder edge with some classic, soaring vocals. You get that in spades with Sasquanaut, and if you're a fan of OLW - or Disengage, another like-minded band that burned bright and fast - you'll find Lo Pan to be exactly what you need.

Kyuss, Slo-Burn, Unida, Hermano, Vista Chino - yes, desert crooner John Garcia may rightfully be considered the ultimate incarnation of stoner rock. His first solo album and opus eponymous from 2014 is followed roughly three years later by The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues, a comparatively relaxed and purely acoustic affair! Better late than never, Mister Garcia himself comments on the rather lengthy period of time he invested in his new baby. Offering chilled out renditions of Kyuss classics including 'Green Machine', 'Space Cadet', 'El Rodeo' and 'Gardenia' The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues seamlessly merges past gems with future, howling hits like 'The Hollingsworth Session' - all you need now is a crackling fire!

Tame Impala are a rainbow sandstorm of stoned riffage, mindbending melody and blissed out adventurism from the most isolated city in the world who echo the lighter side of Cream, Blue Cheer and Kyuss. This is the long-awaited fully distributed release of their debut album, Innerspeaker in North America.

Innerspeaker is Tame Impala's chance to paint a far more extensive picture, and sure enough it redrafts the entire Tame Impala world as we knew it into an explosive, cosmic wonderland of ecstatic harmony and perfectly accessible journeys into inner space.

Recorded and produced by the bands own Kevin Parker with Death In Vegas Tim Holmes on the engineer duties, in an enormous mansion with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. It was then mixed in upstate New York, by renowned sonic maverick Dave Fridmann (MGMT/Flaming Lips).

Sonically compared to notable acts like Black Sabbath, Clutch, Kyuss and Down, the music of King Giant is dark, heavy and abrasive yet full of hooks, the perfect blend of pathos and power. Dismal Hollow, the band's second full-length release, delivers dark atmospheric tales of Americana rich in melody and wrapped in thick heavy grooves. 180g colored vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve.

    Never Too Loud (Awaiting Repress)

Not too many people outside of Canada and Scandinavia seemed to notice, but Toronto-based trio Danko Jones were responsible for some of the most electrifying, ass-kicking, fearsomely focused hard rock of the third millennium's first decade. That being said, after failing to attract a larger audience with two unquestionably stellar albums released through Razor & Tie, the band found itself relegated to smaller indie label Bad Taste for 2008's Never Too Loud, meaning that not even U.S. distribution was a given. Notwithstanding this problematic setback, though, Danko Jones showed they still held an ace or two in their hands by securing the services of hotshot producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Rush, etc.) to oversee Never Too Loud's sessions, and their new ally seemed to be fan enough to not attempt altering the band's sound, even while helping the group to cast a slightly wider stylistic net beyond its usual Thin Lizzy and AC/DC-fishing grounds. Among the resulting surprises was the acoustic guitar-driven nostalgia of Take Me Home and a pair of stoner rock-flavored offerings in the Fu Manchu-like, groove-oriented opener Code of the Road and the extended six-minute head nod of Forest for the Trees (Danko's longest track ever, by far), which culminated with guest vocals from Kyuss legend John Garcia. Beyond this experimental trio, though, Never Too Loud remained relatively faithful to the familiar Danko Jones sound -- albeit rarely played quite as loud as on prior releases, ironically enough. Sure, the punkish pogo-fest of Let's Get Undressed and the raging hormones of teenage fantasy Still in High School both recalled some of the band's wilder, earliest outbursts, and impertinent challenges like Your Tears, My Smile and Something Better confirmed the enduring chip on eponymous frontman Danko Jones' shoulder. But the mellower, melody-ridden King of Magazines and Ravenous definitely valued quality over quantity, and both the album's worst and best offerings paid serious dues to the band's chief influences, the closing title track collapsing under the weight of dull repetition (akin to AC/DC's least inspired latter-day songs) while first single City Streets reached for the heavens of perfection with that glorious blend of crunchy riffs and longing melodies (the very same ones that earned Thin Lizzy's Philip Lynott his angel's wings). And so, somewhere between the same ol' and brand new, the disappointing and sublime, Never Too Loud proved to be yet another enjoyable LP from Danko Jones, despite ranking just a notch below their most recent triumphs.

During many months of 2011 and 2012 Deville have been stuck in the studio most of the time except for some European festivals and random shows. After two full length albums and a couple of hundred shows all around Europe the new record is a product of that. Trying to take this experience of what the band does best and what works live this new record is wider than previous releases... This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band's new home here at Small Stone.

In 2009, after more than 100 gigs all over Europe since the debut album release it was time for the album ''Hail the Black Sky''. Recorded during the early months in 2009 in Malmoe, Sweden by Markus Nilsson and produced by Deville. The band has taken a step to a more straight forward songwriting and this album has more of an album feeling than the last one recording the songs during the same period of time. It follows the pattern of significant Deville grooves and 70`s driven riffing of the darker school. Eleven tracks of rock in the veins of Black Sabbath. Kyuss and Soundgarden it takes you to the next level of 70's rock for the 21st century. This album proves the bands progress to their own sound in the genre of heavy rock and beyond and will definitely take the listeners for a ride.

The Swedish rock band Deville released their full length debut ''Come Heavy Sleep'' in December 2007 on Buzzville Records with great reviews. Two European tours took place in Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec 2008 that went through seven countries. Heaviness and grooves dominates ''Come Heavy Sleep'' that stretches from stoner rock to doom riffs. In 2005/2006 Deville released a record on Daredevil Records a split record (double feature CD/ LP). It was also released in Europe and in the US. The band have existed around six years and have done over 200 gigs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and the U.K the past five years with bands like Sepultura, Fu Manchu, Mustasch(S) and Brant Bjork.

The debut LP from Syracuse, NY's OAK & BONE realizes a sound they have been working towards since their inception. Their first 7 on Hex showed the rocking and groovy stoner metal vibe in a more punk fashion. A split 7 with labelmates LIKE WOLVES last year offered a more trippy vibe to coincide with their fuzzed-out punk attack. Now on this full length you see all sides, anchored by an overpowering bass overload and reverb-ed out guitar leads. 11 tracks of surreal heaviness and monster grooves make this an awesome first full length. 02:54

Sister duo 2:54, consisting of Colette and Hannah Thurlow, have established themselves as one of 2012's most important breakthrough UK bands. Occupying a low-lit, vivid space, they unite a distinct concoction of ideas and influences that taps a rock and punk lineage notoriously anchored by the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. However, their sound neatly neighbors the darker, atmospheric reaches of R&B's finest, as well as timeless walls of sound.

The fact 2:54 have picked up fans from all the above worlds and more is testament not only to their sophisticated and nuanced tastes, but just how compelling a proposition the music they make is. Yet it's only now, with this their first full-length offering that the power of what they do will be revealed for all to see.

Recorded mostly by Mercury-winning producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey etc), and mixed by the legendary Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine In Nails etc), their debut album collects together a cohesive and captivating selection of highlights from their already burgeoning catalog. The 10-songs that together make up 2:54 are ripe with danger and beauty. This is a record that thrums with life, signaled immediately with the gale-force opener, Revolving, a real bittersweet blizzard.

From then on the sisters Thurlow proceed to mine their own distinctive brand of haunted, freaked grooves and cloud-bursting melody, channeling love, loss and longing to spellbinding effect. This is an album with truly no filler. First spin will leave the propulsive, woozy thrust of Easy Undercover's refrains ringing in heads, as will the dueling guitars and surging, urgent cry of Sugar's dance floor rhythms. The smouldering solemnity of Circuitry, the delicate, scorched beauty of Watcher and the album closer Creeping are realized here in magnificent and malevolent new form that few will be prepared for.

Over the course of its 10-tracks it becomes clear that this is a rarefied, captivating affair, a beautifully sustained exercise in mood and tension that almost feels in a league and scene all its own. It's a bewitching snapshot of 2:54 thus far and also a glimpse of the heady future that awaits them.

    Shackles Gift

Zun Zun Egui formed in Bristol in late 2008 - Mauritian guitarist and singer Kushal Gaya met and started making music with Japanese keyboard player Yoshino Shigihara after they had both moved to the UK and a core group of musicians soon formed around them. A love for experimentation, free jazz, fusion, DIY culture, throwing parties and playing wild shows was the glue that bonded the outfit together. After an early clutch of raw and experimental EPs, they focused their song-writing talents and mastery of many styles to create a recognisable Zun Zun Egui sound which included tropicalia, punk funk, Afrobeat, Ethio jazz and no wave. All of these varied disciplines were marshalled to produce their first album "Katang" which was widely hailed as one of the most exciting debuts of 2011. Even for a band as exploratory and talented as ZZE though, the step up in terms of songwriting and inspiration since "Katang" is astounding and it is clear that Shackles' Gift looks like being one of the most unique and thrilling records that will be released in 2015.

Produced by Andrew Hung of Fuck Buttons, "Shackles' Gift" is the album that Zun Zun Egui have always threatened to deliver and we always believed they would. Opening with 'Rigid Man', it hits the listener with bone-shaking tropical funk. Future single 'African Tree' strolls past on a marching band rhythm, complete with an arena-sized chorus and Kyuss-heavy stoner rock guitars. 'Ruby' is like imperial period Depeche Mode discovering the delights of industrial dancehall reggae, while 'I Want You To Know' is an absolute funk/noise rock monster, sounding like Steve Albini recording Queens Of The Stone Age jamming on 'Kashmir'. 'Soul Scratch' is a very British take on a very Mauritian form of music called seggae, which combines the African island folk music known as sega with reggae, but imbuing it with an adrenalised urban uptightness. The album concludes with 'City Thunder' an elemental, dubbed out and dread take on post rock and disco.

Frontman Kushal says that first and foremost "Shackles' Gift" is a British rock record made by a British group but admits that the first sparks of its creation started flying when ZZE visited Mauritius in March 2013. The African island nation, which lies 700 miles east of Madagascar, deep in the Indian Ocean, invited the band to give a concert as part of their Independence Day celebrations. The island's dynamic history has led to a multi-lingual, multi-cultural modern nation which has influenced Zun Zun Egui in more ways than one. Not only has Mauritian music been one of the (many) primary ingredients of their sound and inspired Kushal's multi-lingual approach to singing (the island has 12 main languages) but the diversity of the country acts as a metaphor for the diversity of the group itself.

Welcome to Sky Valley is the third studio album by American stoner rock/metal band Kyuss, originally released on June 28, 1994. This is the first Kyuss album to feature bassist Scott Reeder, who replaced Nick Oliveri in 1992. Welcome to Sky Valley was the last to feature founding member Brant Bjork. The song N.O. was originally recorded by Across The River, a band fronted by Mario Lalli and featuring bassist Reeder. After Reeder left The Obsessed and joined Kyuss, Bjork suggested they record N.O. as a tribute to Across The River.

Queens of the Stone Age have announced the second in their reissue series for 2010. The band will be releasing their long out of print self-titled 1998 debut as a 180g double LP. The reissue will feature the three bonus tracks The Bronze, These Aren't The Droids You're Looking For and Spiders and Vinegaroons which were originally recorded for the album but were left off the 1998 release.

Queens of the Stone Age is the self-titled debut album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Following the collapse of negotiations with Roadrunner Records, the album was released on September 22, 1998 on Loosegroove Records, operated by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. The album was primarily written and recorded by founding member Josh Homme and former Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernández, and features a riff-oriented songwriting style that Homme subsequently dubbed robot rock. Regarding this aesthetic, Homme stated, I just wanted to start a band that within three seconds of listening, people knew what band it was.

Stranded In Arcadia (Out of Stock)

Considered as one of the greats of the European stoner rock scene, France based MARS RED SKY have gained international recognition thanks to a unique sound imprint based on thick infectious grooves and melodic aerial guitar riffs. This is truly a one of a kind experience, wrapped up by Julien Pras' ethereal vocals, Matgaz' powerful rhythms and Jimmy Kinast's pachydermic bass lines. Somewhere between
doom metal and 70's psyche pop, the Mars Red Sound intrigues to begin with, after which it irremediably attracts the masses to celebrate this cosmic ritual of solar burning fuzz and reverberated atmospheres. Driven by the huge success of their eponymous debut record, which was recorded in Spain's mystic Bardenas desert and released in 2011 , the Bordelais were quickly invited to play on the largest European stages with KYUSS Lives !, DINAUSOR JR, SLEEP, and popular festivals
such as EurockÉennes de Belfort ( FR ), Roadburn ( NL ), London ( UK ) and Berlin ( DE ) Desertfests, Sziget Festival ( HUN ), SXSW ( USA ), leading them to play in more than 20 countries. With their incredibly heavy and hypnotic performances, MARS RED SKY have been considered as one of the most thrilling live acts among the international stoner rock scene. In 2012, they paired up with French doom
metal monsters YEAR OF NO LIGHT to release a 3-track split record, which sells out in a blink of an eye. The release of their EP "Be My guide" in the spring of 2013 prophetically opened the path for an extensive tour across Europe, then across the Atlantic Ocean for a few exciting gigs in Latin America, where they recorded their new album : "Stranded in Arcadia" .
