    Wakin On A Pretty Daze

Kurt Vile is slowly, quietly becoming one of the great American guitarists and songwriters, of our time. This 69-minute double album is comprised of sweeping, expansive songs that are both very intimate and conversational. Wakin On A Pretty Daze is a timeless record that would have sounded great 30 years ago, sounds great today, and will still sound great in another 30 years' from now.

Beautifully produced by John Agnello, the record is filled with hazy, swooning guitar lines and dreamy, beatific, and occasionally sardonic vocals. It is summed up by the staggeringly gorgeous 9-minute opener, Wakin On A Pretty Day. The song is also the first video, directed by Jonathan Demme in the spirit of his landmark Springsteen video "Streets Of Philadelphia."

The record has other connections to Kurt's home town. Steve Powers, the renowned Philly street artist, painted the cover mural on an abandoned building near the Northern Liberties. The album is being announced via a mini-doc of Powers creating the mural with Kurt's commentary, and the two of them talking about Philadelphian music and visual arts. The mural will be re-created in London, Los Angeles and New York.

    b'lieve i'm goin down...

Kurt Vile does his own myth making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, b'lieve I'm goin' down... is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history ("valley of ashes") of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie , and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling. In Kurt's words, "I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a sad song on my couch, with nobody waiting on me. I really wanted it to sound like it's on my couch -- not in a lo-fi way, just more unguarded and vulnerable." It's a weird, accepting, mature record, acknowledging the inherent immaturity of being a person whether father, husband , partner, adult, musician, not perfect, but compelling for its understanding that's life though so sad to say - Kim Gordon

    Smoke Ring For My Halo

Philadelphia singer/songwriter Kurt Vile returns with his second proper album (2008s Childish Prodigy was a compendium of sorts). Smoke Ring For My Halo is a gorgeously layered record. Ranging from the tender breezy folk in Jesus Fever to the tuff urban guitar riff of Puppet To The Man, Viles distinctive Philly-accented vocal ties together a sweeping and evocative project, a true American psychedelic folk album.

This is no pastoral listening experience however, when Vile sings, society is my friend: he makes me lie down in a cool bloodbath, he sounds both exhausted and distanced from the ringing harmonics of his guitar and Mike Zanghis pounding drums. Even the gentler songs, such as On Tour and Babys Arms have a distinctly dark lyrical tone. The closest that Vile gets to some kind of acceptance is in the central track, the rueful In My Time, where he sings, I know when we get older, Im dying, but I got everything I need here now, and thats fine, now...thats fine.

Recorded at the Magic Shop by John Agnello, Smoke Ring For My Halo is a massive step forward for one of the countrys most beloved rock songwriters.

More than a mere odds-n-ends collection, Kurt Vile's latest LP is a compilation of tracks from Overnite KV, a tour-only CDR, along with a handful of extra tracks recorded specifically for this release. Here we find Kurt solo, four-trackin' as usual, and blowing minds with his mix of bluegrass guitar, blazed singer-songwriterisms, and the knowledge of how to balance these contexts out with laidback precision. Psychedelic to its core, these twelve tracks speak to the will of the casual perfectionist, honing his craft with effortless aplomb.

    Get Up, Get Out

Timmy Vulgar, Detroit's favorite son, and most ambitiously amphibious creative force doesn't need much of an introduction to anyone familiar with subversive punk music over the past decade and a half. He's been such an irreplaceable figure in each of his musical endeavors since his emergence in such legendary acts such as the Epileptix and Clone Defects back in the late 1990s, right up through his shape-shifting efforts in the mollusk-like Human Eye and the prog-soaked Reptile Forcefield, and straight into his latest nerve-numbing scatterbomb known simply as Timmy's Organism.'' - Todd Killings, Hozac Records

How can KURT VILE fans sleep at night knowing that this fucking guy is out there, ruling the universe? Seriously, Timmy Vulgar - makes everyone else look like a fucking joke. - Mitch Cardwell, Maximum Rock'n'Roll

Couldn't have said it better ourselves, Todd. Working with Timmy Vulgar and his outfit Timmy's Organism means yet another dream come true for Third Man Records. Fronting some of the most original, compelling and unpredictable bands (not only in Detroit, but the world) for over two decades, Tim Lampinen's work with the Epileptix, Clone Defects, and Human Eye has always held a rapturous cult following. Yet his work with his current trio, Timmy's Organism, presents Lampinen (aka Timmy Vulgar) along with bassist Jeff Giant and drummer Blake ''Bovver'' Hill, ready for their close-up. With Heartless Heathen the group touches on their artistic and spiritual forbears of Captain Beefheart and Destroy All Monsters, while amply ramping up the slop culture rapture of classic punk 'n' roll like Chrome, Crime, and the Damned as well as contemporaries like Thee Oh Sees. There's a reason why Lampinen won a $25,000 Kresge Grant for his work with his bands... he creates music that borders on art, live shows that border on theater. It's high time the rest of the world take notice. Are you ready?

    Elwan

For the last five years, Tinariwen have been busy criss-crossing the globe bringing their
triumpant tours to all five continents and expanding their audience. During this time their
beloved homeland in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a Saharan mountain range that straddles the
border between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria has, in effect, been transformed
into a conflict zone, a place where nobody can venture without putting themselves in danger.
These conflicts have forced the band into exile to record their 8th album, Elwan.

Elwan means 'the elephants ' - an animal metaphor to describe those 'beasts', whether
militias or multinational consortiums, who have trampled everything in their path: in the
desert, where both the human and ecological equilibriums are extremely fragile.
Tinariwen chose to record this album is several locations around the world, including for 4
days at the desert hideaway of Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, CA, the studio
known as a favored refuge for many an eclectic artist from Queens of the Stone Age to
Daniel Lanios to Arctic Monkeys to Iggy Pop and more. For Tinariwen, the geographical
location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the
human climate was just as favorable.

A few friends dropped in during the sessions to add some magic to a few tracks including,
Kurt Vile (electric guitar), Mark Lanegan ( Vocals on 'Nànnuflày'), Matt Sweeney (electric
guitar) and producer/guitarist, Alain Johannes (Cigarbox guitar). Sessions were also
recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land
where they are considered musical legends.

Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen's signature won't be disappointed.
But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through
loud and clear. All that potential has been wonderfully honed by the album's mixing engineer
Andrew Schepps, known well for his work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny
    Cash, and Jay Z.

A cinematic suite of contemplative, elastic set pieces that conjures the titular Virginian river/tribe/extinct county, the second solo album by Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, Steve Gunn, Hiss Golden Messenger) deploys banjo, percussion, piano, and voice to explore the rugged country between the poles of Appalachian old-time traditions and ecstatic, minimalist drone. Several Shades Of Why

In the quarter century since he founded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has created some of the era's signature songs, albums and styles. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of bands such as Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, the Fog, Witch, Sweet Apple and he has also guested on innumerable sessions. But Several Shades of Why, recorded at Amherst, Massachusetts' Bisquiteen Studios, is J's first solo studio record, and it is an album of incredible beauty, performed with a delicacy not always associated with his work.

Nearly all acoustic, Several Shades of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees).

Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriters. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure.

    Painted Shut

Hop Along has had multiple lives. First conceptualized as a freak-folk solo act by Frances Quinlan, it
progressed towards a fuller sound with the addition of Mark Quinlan on drums, Tyler Long on bass and
Joe Reinhart (Algernon Cadwallader, Dogs on Acid) on guitar. Emerging as one of music's most unique
songwriters, the captivating vignettes Frances has weaved tell vivid stories of desperation and weary
awakening. Her powerful voice is a spellbinding entity all it's own, celebratory and raw, and one that
    can't be shaken away.

Their new album, Painted Shut, is their 2nd full-length (preceded
by Get Disowned in 2012). However, this release marks their first time creating as a full-formed entity,
arranging everything as a group. It was co-produced, recorded and mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile,
Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, etc.) in the great cities of Philadelphia and Brooklyn, and incidentally finished
in the shortest span of time the band has ever made anything.

Like their debut, Painted Shut is a series of accounts, a procession of fleeting and repeating characters.
However, it diverges from its predecessor in its close-up, controlled approach (most of the album
features the band recording live), and more focused portraiture. Whereas Get Disowned calls forth a
dreamy collage of protagonists in a tone that's often anthemic and surreal, Painted Shut is a grounded,
less merciful image of many struggling adults (and children) in a severe landscape.

At a time when the music world is saturated with more bands than ever, Restorations are a refreshing change of pace: an act who undeniably embody the DIY spirit but also bring along a real breadth of musical knowledge and an unlikely set of influences that somehow manage to work perfectly together.

Formed out of the ashes of the long-running Philadelphia rock act Jena Berlin, Restorations sees the band-vocalist/guitarists Jon Loudon, Dave Klyman and Ben Pierce joining forces with drummer Carlin Brown and bassist Dan Zimmerman, crafting an album that transcends punk rock and picks up where they're extremely well-received self-titled LP left off.

LP2 is a unique blend of indie rock, punk rock and focused psychedelia that can only come from spending a decade honing their skills organically. After producing their music largely on their own the band linked up with close friend Jon Low (Local Natives, Twin Sister, Kurt Vile) at Philadelphia's Miner Street Studios to create an album that captures the unbridled energy, sonic grandeur, and sheer volume of the band's live performances.

From the driving, anthemic vibe of "The New Old" to the inventive indie rock of "The Plan," LP2 is a remarkably diverse album, which makes sense when you consider how varied the members' respective tastes are. "I think the influences for us are a little broader than a lot of bands because we don't have one central songwriter," Loudon explains, citing everyone from the classic punk acts, classic rock, metal, drone and noise. "Over the years we've become more comfortable with trying stranger things and odder combinations to see what works," he continues. "The general rule is, if everyone is into it then we just go for it. We really carried that spirit into these songs."

Lyrically, LP2 sees Loudon once again collecting his own vignettes and pairing them with the
group's music to create a narrative that isn't linear but is instead as vast as the instrumentation that supports it. "The theme of this band is boredom and repetition and focusing on little tiny moments and that type of thing, so this record is just a collection of those stories," he explains. Sharing these stories is what lies at the core of the band. Restorations aren't looking to be the biggest band, they just want to continue to create music, evolve, and bring their musical stories all over the world.

"I feel like if we tried to set a real goal with this band it would be kind of pointless because we've been doing it long enough where if you think you're getting to a certain level then you're just setting yourself up for disappointment," Klyman explains. "So it's better to just see what happens, which is how we've always approached this band." Whatever ends up happening, there's no question that with these songs as a vehicle, Restorations is headed somewhere uncharted and they invite you to come along for the ride.

Philadelphia's Modern Baseball are a uniquely contemporary band. Their
quirky, tuneful songs convey how it feels to be young and hopeless in modern
America-a cracked cellphone clutched in one's hand, subconsciously refreshing

Recorded in the basement of Dallas and Travis' parents' home north of Toronto over the winter of 2015, the familiar surroundings and lack of distractions resulted in a consistent feel, despite the eclecticism at the heart of The Sadies' sound. The psych-folk flourishes on tracks such as "Riverview Fog" are no mere homage; this is the sound of our inscrutable world, and how we manage to survive in it. Kurt Vile appears on "Easy (Like Walking)."

The Sadies are a band that fans cling to like a closely guarded secret, with each new release fulfilling the promise to reach further, for all of our sakes, not just their own. With Northern Passages, the time has come to make room for more on this wild acid-folk-country-punk trip, and trust me, we'll be better off because of it.

    Guilty Of Everything (Awaiting Repress)

Philadelphia's NOTHING have been destroying the eardrums of audiences throughout North America for the past 2 years with a magnetic blend of captivatingly dark and beautiful vocals and explosive, blown out, in the red guitar fuzz. On their debut full length Guilty Of Everything, recorded and produced by Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, War On Drugs, etc) NOTHING seamlessly merge the huge distorted guitar sound of 90s/00s alternative rock giants My Bloody Valentine and Smashing Pumpkins with Jesu's introspective post-metal/hardcore. This is a triumph of a debut that successfully manages to be massively loud, darkly introspective and totally beautiful all at once.

    Dub Egg

Following up on last year's acclaimed limited-edition LP for Mexican Summer, the Austin-based quartet The Young (guitarist/vocalist Hans Zimmerman, bassist Jason Costanszo, guitarist Kyle Edwards and drummer Ryan Maloney) make their proper debut with a crafted, explosive record best summed up as "classic Matador meets classic rock."

After a year sharing the stage with Sic Alps, Kurt Vile, Pierced Arrows, Endless Boogie and other masters of modern rock guitar, their meticulous interplay has become both uncanny and unstoppable. Dub Egg is a shimmering, incandescent approach to classic forms that nobody could have imagined from these guys a couple years ago. The album carries echos of Crazy Horse, Television, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Dream Syndicate as well as the aforementioned.

Recorded in a woodland cabin, all-analog and self-produced, this exceptionally beautiful sounding rock album, to be released on Matador Records, is the sort of expansive, guitar masterclass (never at the expense of terrific songs, mind you) they've only hinted at previously.

    Demolished Thoughts

Demolished Thoughts, released via Matador, is the 4th solo album from Sonic Youths Thurston Moore and his first to be produced by Beck Hansen. Recorded in Los Angeles and Northampton, MA this past autumn and winter, with a title culled from The Faiths Its Time, Demolished Thoughts is an equally beautiful and brooding work.

While there are more than a few tonal similarities to some of your favorite Moore compositions from years past, the execution this time around is nothing short of staggering. Demolished Thoughts burnishes Thurstons rep as a classic songwriter in ways never anticipated.

In addition to Moores guitars and vocals, other players include violinist Samara Lubelski (Metal Mountains, Hall Of Fame, Tower Recordings, Metabolismus), harpist Mary Lattimore (Kurt Viles latest), bassist Bram Inscore, drummer Joey Waronker and Beck.

    Rented World

Philadelphia-based band The Menzingers will release their new album Rented World via Epitaph Records. Rented World is the fourth studio release for the band and the follow-up to their critically-applauded album On The Impossible Past (2012).

In Remission is the first track from the new album, and one where the band observes, Maybe the future's just a little bit weird; a statement that sets the tone of Rented World.

The Rust Belt punks are in a crucial period of growth. Now in their mid-20s, members Greg Barnett (guitar/vocals), Tom May (guitar/vocals), Eric Keen (bass), and Joe Godino (drums), seek a greater wisdom in life, even if they are old enough to know better. A theme that strongly permeates throughout the album.

Things start to feel a little more serious, said May. When we were younger we wrote fiery songs because at that age it's your world view. Now I look at the world and think 'well, maybe I'm not right all the time.'

Another change for the former Scranton, Pennsylvania housemates is their studio location. They entered Miner Street Studio for the first time in Fishtown, Philly in the fall of 2013. Jonathan Low, whose rich Americana influences can be heard on his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Kurt Vile was enlisted to engineer the album. When writing the new material, the band recognized their shifts in their craft, shifts they knew would best be handled by Low. "We wanted to go to somebody who wasn't used to recording punk records, though it wasn't in a pretentious way, like we wanted to become an indie rock band, stated May.

The end result is an album that fearlessly collides the snarl of emo with grungy, 90s grit and exploring the celestial expanse of post-rock. It's slightly new territory for a band coping with their mid-20s. And lyrically touches on matters that any red blooded human of that age can relate to.
