Indie-rap mainstay Aesop Rock has announced his new album, The Impossible Kid, dropping April 29th on Rhymesayers Entertainment, marking his first solo venture since 2012's Skelethon. On the new album, Aesop continues finding new ways to improve on the skills that have made him one of the kings of indie hip-hop. His creative process now includes a newfound willingness to open up about his personal life, going deep on topics like depression, his sometimes rocky relationship with his family, and the turbulent handful of years that culminated in Aesop leaving his adopted home of San Francisco to live in a barn out in the woods, where he recorded the foundations of The Impossible Kid. There's also moments of levity though, as Aesop taps into the funny side of his persona that he suppressed during the period where being taken as a serious lyricist was more of a priority. Like Skelethon, Aesop exercised complete creative control over every aspect of the album, from the production (which he handled himself, with instrumental help from Philly's Grimace Federation) to conceptualizing the cover art by his friend Alex Pardee.

Though it's been four years since his last solo album, Aesop has maintained an impressive creative streak, releasing collaborative albums with Kimya Dawson (The Uncluded's Hokey Fright in 2013), with Rob Sonic (Hail Mary Mallon's Bestiary in 2014), and with Homeboy Sandman (LICE's self-titled EP in 2015). He's also been actively crafting beats. Recent projects include producing the 32+ minute instrumental mix, The Blob, working together with Nike to provide the music for a series of their skateboarding videos, and producing the soundtrack for the upcoming film Bushwick, starring Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow.

He's also started skateboarding and drawing again, which were his big passions before his hobby of making rap songs turned into a paying gig that evolved into an accidental 20-year long career, taking him from making beats in his bedroom to playing for crowds thousands deep. Going back to his roots has proven useful in processing everything that's happened in his life over the past couple decades, and maybe to figure out the person he's become: The Impossible Kid, a person who's spent his life doing things that seemed unthinkable before he just went and did them, blazing a visionary trail all his own. Two decades in, he's still out there pushing it forward.

    The Kid (Pre-Order)

In 2015 Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith released her first widely distributed full-length album, Euclid. Little more than a year later Smith returned with her wonderstruck psychedelic breakthrough EARS to universal praise in the spring of 2016. Pitchfork called EARS rich and rewarding, and included EARS in their list of the top twenty experimental albums of the year, while other outlets including NPR, SPIN, and Rolling Stone sung similar best-of-the-year praises. In addition to releasing EARS in 2016, Smith toured with fellow sonic-adventurists Animal Collective, and soundtracked Google's incredible virtual tour series The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks.

This year sees the welcomed continuation of Smith's output, The Kid, an album that climbs to the peaks of its forerunner and astonishingly continues upward. The Kid aurally maps the emotional realities and spiritual epiphanies of a lifeform through its infancy, societal assimilation, and eventual self-remembrance, conjuring each phase with psychoacoustic eloquence. On her newest LP Smith challenges her listeners to entertain new paradigms of listenership by drawing our attention to multiple elements simultaneously, as if-- in her words-- listening to two conversations at once.

Copland - Appalachian Spring / Billy The Kid (Speakers Corner)

Aaron Copland is among those Americans whose compositions have found worldwide recognition. Measured against his long lifespan (1900-1990), his creative phase was relatively short, and indeed he hardly composed at all from the Sixties onwards. His most important works were his answer to the musical crisis of the Thirties, and he has gone down in history as having greatly influenced the development of New Music in the USA.

The ballets Appalachian Spring (1944) and Billy the Kid (1938) are considered to be key works of their day. Both have folkloric traits, which brought Copland the reputation of having a penchant for borrowed melodies. In reality, the well-known tunes are very subtly treated and modified, and are incorporated into large-scale, defined forms. Now and again, melodic echoes of Mahler's music or highly rhythmic exposed passages reminiscent of Stravinsky flash through. The ballet Billy the Kid is thoroughly American. Arranged in orchestral 'wide-screen sound', as it were, cowboy melodies glow with the very best Wild West tradition, and are bedded in a dramaturgy which is almost ripe for a film soundtrack. The signal to Hollywood is virtually unmistakable. That is America.

Recording: June 1961 by C.R. Fine and Robert Eberenz

Production: Wilma Cozart-Fine and Harold Lawrence

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    The Bling Ring Soundtrack

Def Jam releases the official soundtrack for The Bling Ring-- the new Sofia Coppola-directed, Emma Watson-starring film based on the true story of a group of kids in L.A. who robbed celebrities' homes.

The film was scored by Daniel Lopatin, aka synth experimentalist Oneohtrix Point Never, working with with longtime Coppola collaborator Brian Reitzell. Reitzell also served as the executive soundtrack producer and music supervisor, putting together a very eclectic mix of rap (Kanye, Azealia Banks, Rick Ross) and krautrock (Klaus Schulze, Can) plus the likes of Sleigh Bells, M.I.A., Frank Ocean, and Phoenix.

Lopatin and Reitzell previously worked on music for the Kelsey Grammer-starring television show Boss. Reitzell previously worked with Coppola on Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation, and The Virgin Suicides. Lopatin and Reitzell also collaborated on a track for the Bling Ring soundtrack, Bling Ring Suite.

    Young Guns Soundtrack

The Young Guns original motion picture score has never been released until now!

Released in 1988, Young Guns is an action-packed cult classic 80s western that tells the story of Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) and the Regulators (Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko) exacting revenge upon the Santa Fe Ring during the Lincoln County War in 1878. As good as the movie is, the score is what makes it great!

Composed by Anthony Marinelli & Brian Banks, the Young Guns score brilliantly embodies the off-kilter, emotionally unstable characteristics of Billy the Kid, both the man and the myth. It is epic and powerful, but equally haunting with an underlying melancholy tone.

The album is mastered from the original recordings and pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl for the enhanced listening pleasure of all you audiophiles out there!

    Almost Holy: Original Soundtrack

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a number of Ukraine's youth wound up
homeless and addicted to a lethal cocktail of injected cold medicine and alcohol.
Steve Hoover's documentary Almost Holy follows a pastor named Gennadiy
Mokhnenko, who saves street kids, at times by forcible abduction, and brings
them to his Pilgrim Republic rehabilitation center.

    The film's depiction of a
country in the grip of poverty, addiction, and warfare is made even more powerful
by its captivating electronic score by award-winning composer Atticus Ross,
his brother Leopold Ross, and Bobby Krlic (The Haxan Cloak).

"Occasionally a project comes along where one feels compelled to contribute,"
Atticus said of seeing the early footage that convinced him to work on the film.
"It's a different world over there - of course we have dire poverty in the U.S. - but
to see an army of drug-addicted children living in those conditions, children the
same age as my own, under ten years old but covered in track marks and sleeping
on sewers to stay warm, and someone is asking you to write a little music to help
the cause. It would be hard to find a reason not to."

His collaborators felt the same way, and the trio soon began work on the score
    - the Ross brothers in the U.S. and Krlic in the U.K. The distance meant the composers
initially worked separately, but in the end, the soundtrack feels remarkably
    coherent.

The message and content of film kept the trio inspired, and once Krlic had
emigrated to the U.S., they met at Atticus' studio and continued to work on the
album as a free-standing piece. The film remained the anchor and the catalyst for
their creativity, but several of the tracks on the record don't appear in the picture
at all. Almost Holy is thus not simply a soundtrack album, but a soundtrack and
an album, one that both enriches its film and stands apart from it.

Bad Moms is a 2016 American black comedy film directed and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (The Hangover). The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Christina Applegate.

Bad Moms won a People's Choice award for Best Comedy. The film premiered on July 19, 2016, and grossed over $179 million in less than a year and became a surprising blockbuster movie.

Amy (Mila Kunis) has a seemingly perfect life - a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However, she's over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she's about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities, going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun, and self-indulgence - putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.

A sequel (A Bad Mom's Christmas) and spin-off (Bad Dads) are scheduled for later this year.

The soundtrack includes well-known songs and artists like DNCE, KT Tunstall, Janelle MonaÉ, Foreigner, Walk The Moon, Icona Pop feat Charli XCX and many more. Christopher Lennertz (Medal of Honor, Sausage Party, Smurfs: The Lost Village) composed the score music.

Yes And Also Yes (Awaiting Repress)

The title for Mike Doughty's new album, Yes And Also Yes, was the headline of his profile during an unsuccessful foray into online dating. Most of the songs found here were written at the legendary artists' colony Yaddo, where Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, Sylvia Plath and a lot of all-time giants once worked.

The album was recorded in a studio in Koreatown, Manhattan from July of 2010 to April of 2011 and was produced by Pat Dilett. Supporting musicians include Andrew 'Scrap' Livingston on bass and Thomas 'Doveman' Bartlett on piano. Features the Christmas song, Holiday, where Doughty duets with Roseanne Cash as well as Into the Un, a rejected Twilight soundtrack song about goth kids on LSD in a train station.

    The Book Of Love (Soundtrack)

First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On 180 Gram Solid Red Vinyl, Black Vinyl Thereafter

The Book Of Love tells the story of an introverted architect named Henry. After the death of his wife in a car accident, he sets out to help Millie, a homeless teen, to build a raft to sail across the Atlantic.

Justin Timberlake, the multi-platinum pop star, actor and owner of handfuls of Grammys and Emmys, composed the orchestral film together with Mitchell Owens.

Justin has always been intrigued by movie scores; "I think when I was a kid I would hear movies more than I would watch them. I saw 'E.T.' at a drive-in with my father, and hearing that main theme to the movie, and how it's used when the bikes take off and they fly over the police barricade, and you hear that sweeping melody - I'll never forget that moment."

His debut composition is nothing but amazing. Justin takes you on a minimalistic reflective trip. The score is emotionally driven and shows pure honesty, which is the most supreme form in which an artist can express himself.

This Record Belongs To: is the antidote to your standard kids compilations. You won t find boy bands, princesses, or purple dinosaurs here. Instead the record consists of two halves an upbeat side for daytime dancin and a mellow side for bedtime lullabies. Among the many gems featured include songs from Carole King, Woody Guthrie, Donovan, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Garcia, Nina Simone, Kermit The Frog and more. Inspired by the classic Little Golden Books Series and Sesame Street s In Harmony albums, This Record Belongs To: stems from a love of music, reading, and a passion for teaching future generations the interactive experience of holding an album in your hands, putting needle to groove, and immersing yourself in the pages of a record s sleeve as the music plays. The compilation was compiled and sequenced by DJ and friend, Zach Cowie, who is as dear to our hearts as this collection of songs (previously passed around as a gift between friends) and is the soundtrack for many LITA & TMR offspring. These kiddos now all have undeniably excellent taste in tunes. The record is accompanied by an original, full-color storybook illustrated by acclaimed artist, Jess Rotter, which tells the tale of five forest pals who find a mysterious object a round, flat disc that they proceed to investigate. The animal friends finally solve the mystery and learn how to play a record and let their bodies move to the groove (within the grooves).

    The Celts

Born Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year. --Sam Sutherland

    Limited To 1000 Copies

Fittingly enough, The Cool Ghoul himself, John Zacherle, passed away right around Halloween in 2016, and now we here at Real Gone Music are celebrating his one-year "deathday" by releasing his incredibly rare album Zacherle's Monster Gallery, originally issued on the budget Elektra imprint Crestview, on green & orange "pumpkin" vinyl limited to 1000 copies! This record was originally released in 1963, and was actually a copy of the 1960 Elektra album Spook Along with Zacherley, except for one very important detail: the cover art to the Crestview release was inked by legendary Mad Magazine artist Jack Davis, who actually passed away last year as well. Which probably explains why original copies of this record are selling for about $150 if you can find them So consider this release a twin tribute to two guys who brought a big smile to millions of kids, especially those on the East Coast that used to see Zach present all those cheesy horror movies on TV. Searching For Sugar Man

The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Searching For Sugar Man, a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest. The film opens in New York, Los Angeles, and London (via Studio Canal) on July 27th and will play in other cities throughout the coming months. For a complete release schedule, visit the film's website: www.SearchingForSugarManMovie.com.

Back in the late '60s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, Cold Fact bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled Coming From Reality and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.

Cold Fact took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away.

Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they'd heard. Their story forms the basis of Searching For Sugar Man.

Both sides of the story, Rodriguez's life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television's international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as Men Who Stare At Goats (George Clooney) and The Terminal (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of Searching For Sugar Man is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself.

"I describe myself as 'musico-politico'," Rodriguez said recently. "I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like: We Want Jobs and Stop the War - I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

STRANGER THINGS is the breakout Netflix original series set in 1983 Indiana where a young boy vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the '80s supernatural classics that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthew Modine, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton. The series is now streaming on Netflix globally.

Formed in 2009, the prolific Austin, TX experimental synth quartet S U R V I V E have released two full-lengths and numerous EPs / singles since their inception, including recent contributions to the soundtrack for the acclaimed indie horror film The Guest. Additionally, two of the group's members recently scored the soundtrack for the first season of STRANGER THINGS, launched this summer on Netflix. S U R V I V E has appeared at esteemed festivals across the US including Moogfest, Levitation Fest, Fun Fun Fun, Beserktown, Day in The Desert, Decibel, etc. and have played alongside acts like Goblin, John Maus, Tame Impala, Lightning Bolt, This Will Destroy You, A Place To Bury Strangers, Max Cooper, and many others; Noisey even called their live show ''transcendental.''

Now, S U R V I V E have completed self-recording their second full length via their home studios, which will see a September 30 via Relapse. The synth quartet's sophomore full-length and Relapse debut is a dark, sweeping exercise in analog synth mastery. The pulsating, 9-song instrumental release showcases immense diversity between tracks - RR7349's compositions range from grim tom-tom thunder to space-age epics, pairing tense plodding grooves with meditative ambiance and driving, rhythmic beats. Inspired by IDM and horror scores alike, RR7349 is simultaneously ominous and hopeful; tense and relaxed; percussive and melodic. A unique addition to the Relapse discography, and unquestionably S U R V I V E's best work to date.

The first season of STRANGER THINGS is available to stream now on Netflix.

    Bigfoot (Awaiting Repress)

Cayucas: Pronounced "ky-yook-us", is the monikered homage to a sleepy little seaside town in San Luis Obispo County,California. That town, Cayucos, has hardly changed in the last 50 years, a far cry from the gentrified tourist traps parading showily down the nearby coastline. In the early 1960s,the surfing craze hit. There was one bar around which local kids congregated back then, the site of helpless crushes and fights and games of pool, a place whose jukebox soundtracked innumerable teenage years as breezy summers rolled into mild winters and back around again. The bar has since disappeared, but as Zach Yudin, the man behind the name, will tell you, the place still holds on tight to its propensity for dreamy, lazy, bonfire-lit nights worth getting moony-eyed about.

Cayucas' debut album bears little resemblance to the sound of modern California that's been so omnipresent over the past few years. Instead, Bigfoot posesses flirty rhythmic sensibilities both snappy and sparkling, a rosy, near-tropical warmth, and a loose and conversational feel that position you right in the line of Yudin's wry gaze.

Having moved to Japan for a yearto teach,he became inspired by the country'slove of electronic music. He started writing Daft Punk-style material while he was out there, and experimenting with the vinyl sampling that would form a crucial component of Cayucas' early sound-old rock albums by bands like the Beach Boys, theTornadoes, and the Animals. Although he has since set aside the synthesizer, this braiding together of proto-pop group classicsfed directly into the album.

Bigfoot was recorded up in the chilly Pacific Northwest-in Oregon, with Secretly's Richard Swift in charge of production. It's the result of Swift and Yudin's symbiotic working relationship, and positivity one of its brightest qualities, even when recalling missed opportunities-there's no space for downcast vibes here. "High School Lover" is perhaps Bigfoot most quintessential song; centered around a chiming rhythm ripe for shimmying, and a tale that sums up Yudin'staste for his own personal nostalgia.

After working at a local independent jazz label for a couple of years, he's now making music full-time, rehearsing with his new band for Cayucas' first live shows, running along theVenice Beach boardwalk, and hitting a certain bar each night to play pool, hang out, and listen to the Beach Boys. Some places don't change.

    Man-Child (Speakers Corner)

After his early avant-garde years with Blue Note Records, Herbie Hancock achieved much success with pop music fans by gradually turning towards a mixture of Afro-American styles in which he combined soul, jazz and funk. Having composed the soundtrack to Bill Cosby's animated children's show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and released a popular family-orientated album entitled Fat Albert Rotunda, Hancock stated that instead of looking for jazz musicians who could play funky music, he had searched for funk musicians with a feeling for jazz. That this concept functions only too well is demonstrated in the funky album Man-Child, which features such brilliant jazz musicians as Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin and Ernie Watts. But wait! There's no narcissistic showing off here as in a jam session. The whole band performs as one, playing concentrated grooves around Hancock's carefully intertwined electronic sounds. The result is a fast-paced funky style, due to the collective efforts of the band, although each member is given ample opportunity to show off his prowess in short solo interludes and thus delight the listener with his unique style.

    Dope Machines

Every so often, one song can change everything. For The Airborne Toxic Event, that particular number happened to be an A Capella version of Queen and David Bowie's classic duet "Under Pressure".

"Somebody played it for me, and it blew my mind," declares vocalist and guitarist Mikel Jollett. "I made a decision to change my whole approach to music. I just wanted to be joyful about it. I wasn't going to worry anymore. For the first three records, I thought mostly like writer. My mindset changed. It was about inventing a musical logic that was unabashedly catchy and rhythmic, but way weirder than anything we've done in the past."

That "logic" came to life while Mikel composed "Hell and Back" for the Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack in August 2013. Under a tight deadline, he had no choice but to produce the track himself-a first for the Los Angeles outfit. However, he didn't stop there.

The frontman would go on to personally produce The Airborne Toxic Event's fourth full-length album and first for Epic Records Dope Machines with the blessing and support of Steven Chen [guitar, keyboards], Anna Bulbrook [violin, keyboard, backing vocals], Daren Taylor [drums], and Adrian Rodríguez [bass].

"Producing was massively challenging and super fun," admits Mikel. "When we finished the last record, our producer Jacquire King said to me, 'I think you're ready to produce an album now.' I felt like we had reached the apotheosis of being a proper rock band. This was the exact opposite. It was me alone in a room for 12 hours a day working harder than I'd ever worked."

Early in the process, Mikel tapped into a boundless aesthetic, embracing electronic elements as well as pop structures and unbridled rock 'n' roll bombast. At the same time, it defied categorization at every turn. "That's one of the hallmarks of the record," he affirms. "It doesn't sound like anything else."

The first single "Wrong" merges striking synths and an electronic swing with an evocative refrain punctuated by a robust groove. It's borderline danceable, but always chant-able.

"It's just about a guy feeling insecure," explains Mikel. "I wrote it at a time of massive upheaval in my life. We all have that moment. You look over everything and think, 'I am an idiot!' It's not every day, but you wish you could start over. That's the idea."

"California" turns a spotlight on a different side of the Golden State from the perspective of a true native. All the while, it still boasts an unshakable refrain and intricate instrumentation.

"I grew up in California," he goes on. "My parents were hippies, and I was born in the back of a VW bus on the beach. I was around everybody from Beatniks to gang members to kids who just emigrated from Guatemala or Ethiopia. None of this had anything to do with the popular image of what California is-that idea of palm trees and movie stars. As soon as you've got an idea of utopia, it begs a dystopia. It's an idea of apocalypse right around the corner in a place that's considered ideal."

Simultaneously, the title track tempers a distinct guitar bounce with entrancing harmonies, making for a provocative and potent dichotomy.

"You can interact with all of these dope hand devices, but they make you sort of dopey an hour later," he sighs. "You make music with them. They can save you from a heart attack. They're little extensions of the things that make us fundamentally human, which is the desire to interact with one another. The machines are all of these things at the same time."

In the middle of 2014 after moving on from Island Records, Epic Records C.E.O. L.A. Reid reached out and signed them-for the second time.

"L.A. signed us way-back-when at Island," recalls Mikel. "He literally saw us at Bowery Ballroom in New York, came backstage, and offered us a record deal. The moment we were free, he sent us a deal memo. It's a pleasure to be working with him again. He's a big believer, and he brings a lot of energy to this."

They've carried a similar energy through three full-length albums: The Airborne Toxic Event [2008], which spawned the gold-selling single "Sometime Around Midnight", All At Once [2010], and Such Hot Blood [2013]. In addition to reaching gold status, iTunes named "Sometime Around Midnight" the "#1 Alternative Song of the Year", and it spent a staggering eight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Heatseakers Chart. HBO utilized it on their high-profile Network Season Promo. The group has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman four times, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno four times, and on Jimmy Kimmel Live! three times. Moreover, they've taken the stage at festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza and sold over 50,000 tickets in 2013 alone.

In many ways though, Dope Machines signals something of a rebirth.

"It's like debuting a new phase," concludes Mikel. "It was a new approach. We've got a new label. We threw out everything we were tired of and moved on to a brand new palette. That was the goal. This isn't what The Airborne Toxic Event is supposed to be. This is who we are.
