At The Five Spot, Vol. 1

Part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.

All mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 200-gram LPs pressed at Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom

Deep groove label pressings, tip-on jackets on thick cardboard stock

One night during a one-time, two-week engagement at the Five Spot produced enough music of lasting merit for three albums. When Rudy Van Gelder took his portable equipment down to the fabled Cooper Square jazz club on July 16, 1961, he captured the interaction of an extraordinary quintet.

Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis and Ed Blackwell had formed a cooperative group and, if LIttle had not died in October 1961, there is no doubt that it would have been a potent force in the music of the 1960s and beyond. Dolphy himself died in June 1964, after establishing himself as one of the important contemporary reedmen. Here his alto saxophone and bass clarinet and Little's trumpet explore three originals: The Prophet by Dolphy, Bee Vamp by Little, and Fire Waltz by Waldron. It's time caught in a bottle - music for the ages.

    Miles Smiles (Speakers Corner)

Except for the taping of a live performance at the Portland Festival, Miles Davis's discography for 1966 only lists the recordings made for the LP Miles Smiles! How strange when one considers the usual large output of Miles and his ensembles for Columbia Records in the Sixties.

The bass player Ron Carter was best suited for the complicated rhythm part and remained Miles's 'number one' in a quintet which gave a new interpretation to compositions by Wayne Shorter and jazz hits such as Freedom Jazz Dance by Eddie Harris and Jimmy Heath's Gingerbread Boy.

Every second of the nine-minute-long Footprints by Shorter is an absolute highlight, while the drumming of the young Tony Williams in Freedom Jazz Dance is full of vitality, with a quick pulse, and even described as threatening in the liner notes. This music is neither 'new stream' nor 'old guard' but good modern jazz according to Anthony Tuttle. That's exactly what Miles Smiles was upon its release 40 years ago - and that's what it is to this day! And that Miles Davis smiled for once thanks to the great musical relationship between the five individualists is certainly no mere rumour.

    Musicians:

    • Miles Davis

    • Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone)

    • Herbie Hancock (piano)

    • Ron Carter (bass)

    • Tony Williams (drums)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Donald Johanos conducts the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Little needs to be said about this audiophile classic. Known for its demonstration qualities with very low, deep bass and overall smooth and warm sound. Mastered at AcousTech by Kevin Gray and pressed on virgin vinyl at Pallas in Germany.

The tape recording was made at a speed of 30 inches-per-second, using a transport modified to produce exceptionally good motion: a specially developed constant-velocity recording curve was employed for improved signal-to-noise ratio. The lacquer masters were made directly from the original tape, thus avoiding further transfer degradation. The result is a recording of exceptional clarity, naturalness and freedom from vices prevalent generally in the art. - original liner notes

    Wheatstraw Suite

Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio

    Pressed at Quality Record Pressings

Features Albert Brumley's I'll Fly Away and Tim Hardin's Reason To Believe

This album paved the way for a generation of country and folk-rockers. An indispensable part of any collection of '60s music

It never got any better than this. In 1968, as the Byrds were making valiant (if unappreciated) efforts to bring rock and country music closer together, the Dillards were trying to do some of the same for bluegrass and rock. The result was 13 all-but-perfect tracks mixing some pretty laid-back topicality (Hey Boys) and humor (The Biggest Whatever), cowboy songs (Single Saddle, which Gene Autry should have covered), just plain gorgeous poetry (Lemon Chimes), and a couple of unexpected covers (I've Just Seen a Face, Reason to Believe), with arrangements that exude a delicate, subdued lushness (Listen to the Sound) and an element of electric rock (courtesy of Joe Osborn on electric bass and Jim Gordon on drums) that worked perfectly. In many ways, this is a finer rural/rock fusion album than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the first Flying Burrito Brothers album, or the Beau Brummels' efforts during this same period, and an indispensable part of any collection of '60s music. - Bruce Eder, allmusic.com

    Traffic

Mastered from the Original Island Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray

Traffic were one of the premier architects of the acid rock movement in the '60s and blossomed further into one of the most important super groups of the '70s. Their recordings are the soundtrack to a generation of music enthusiasts that continues to this day and will forever stand the test of time. In 1968, the legendary founding members Stevie Winwood, Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood sojourned on after a smash debut with Dear Mr. Fantasy and continued the winning streak with the groundbreaking self-titled classic Traffic.

Known for their superior progressive rock, jazz and pop influences, the multi-faceted music of this LP offers non-stop entertainment which truly illustrates the legendary talent of this English quartet. Whether standout tracks from the pens of Dave Mason like the classic rock smash anthem Feelin' Alright? or the prog-rock masterpiece Winwood and Capaldi's classic Forty Thousand Headmen, the Traffic album has surely earned its currency over the years as one of the more important albums of the classic rock era.

Filled with the piano driven melodies and vocals of the legendary Stevie Winwood, the hard rocking vocals and guitar work of the masterful Dave Mason, the explosive sax breaks by the late Chris Wood and the power drumming and vocals of the late great Jim Capaldi, the Traffic album will always be one of the most revered albums in their extraordinary career.

Even further classics ensued with each of the hard rockin' ten tracks that make up this masterwork. How about the smash sounds of Pearly Queen or another Winwood and Capaldi classic Means To An End, plus more Dave Mason treasures like You Can All Join In or Don't Be Sad. No matter what track is your favorite, it's all classic Traffic, and it just doesn't get much better than this.

Friday Music continues with their second installment in the Traffic/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with the monumental rock classic Traffic. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso from the original Island Records tapes at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray, Traffic is a truly one of the most important audiophile vinyl releases of 2012.

And His Mother Called Him Bill (Speakers Corner)

When Billy Strayhorn died of cancer in 1967, Duke Ellington was devastated. His closest friend and arranger had left his life full of music and memories. As a tribute, Ellington and his orchestra almost immediately began recording a tribute to Strayhorn, using the late arranger's own compositions.

The album features well-known and previously unrecorded Strayhorn tunes that showcase his range, versatility, and, above all, the quality that Ellington admired him most for: his sensitivity to all of the timbral, tonal, and color possibilities an orchestra could bring to a piece of music.

Full of informality and soulful verve, these recordings feel like they are an afterthought, an unwillingness to completely let go, a eulogy whose final words are questions, elegantly stated and met with only the echo of their last vibrations ringing in an empty room, full of wondering, longing, and helplessness, but above all the point of the questions themselves: "Is this enough?" or "Can there ever be enough to pay an adequate tribute to this man?"
They are interesting questions, because only five years later we would all be saying the same thing about Ellington. For a man who issued well over 300 albums, this set is among his most profoundly felt and very finest recorded moments.

Pioneer Of Rock 'n' Roll In His Solo Album Debut!

200-Gram Vinyl Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

All-Analog Mastering By Kevin Gray At Cohearant Audio

Deluxe Tip-On Gatefold Jacket From Stoughton Printing

Rock 'n' roll legend Buddy Holly produced some of
the most distinctive and influential music of his era.
Three months after the release of The Chirping Crickets
came this self-titled 1958 classic, Buddy's last album
released prior to the plane crash in Iowa that struck
him down in 1959 at age 22.

What has Analogue Productions done to kick this classic
album up a notch? For starters, our version features
stellar remastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent
Audio. Followed by state-of-the-art plating and pressing
on 200-gram heavyweight vinyl at Quality Record
Pressings, maker of the world's finest-sounding LPs.
    Stoughton Printing provides a sturdy old-style tip-on
gatefold jacket with added photos to round out the
    package.

Born on Sept. 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, Buddy Holly
was well-versed in several music styles and was a
    seasoned performer by age 16.

When Buddy Holly & The Crickets broke through
nationally in 1957, they were marketed by Decca Records
as two different acts whose records were released
on two different Decca subsidiaries - Brunswick
for Crickets records, Coral for Holly records. But
there was no real musical distinction between the two,
except perhaps that the "Crickets" sides had more
    prominent backup vocals.

This reissue marks the debut album credited to Buddy
Holly. It features Holly's Top Ten single "Peggy Sue"
plus several songs that have turned out to be standards:
"I'm Gonna Love You Too," "Listen to Me," "Everyday,"
"Words of Love," and "Rave On."

Out Front (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

Booker Little was the first trumpet soloist to emerge in jazz after the death of Clifford Brown to have his own sound. His tragically brief life (he died at age 23 later in 1961) cut short what would have certainly been a major career. This is supremely soulful modern jazz and one of his best albums ever as a leader. The album's got a tremendous feel from the very first note and there are many strong moments during these consistently challenging and satisfying performances. He had a bold jazz vision that makes us miss his talents even more strongly than before!

    Musicians:

    • Booker Little (trumpet)

    • Julian Priester (trombone)

    • Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute)

    • Don Friedman (piano)

    • Art Davis, Ron Carter (bass)

    • Max Roach (drums, vibraphone, percussion)

Recording: March and April 1961 in Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City, by Bob d'Orleans

    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Is this the album that made country cool? Former Byrds Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman picked up where they left off with Sweetheart of the Rodeo with this stunning masterpiece of a debut album by The Flying Burrito Bros. While Parsons had already pushed rock in a country direction during his brief stint with The Byrds and The International Submarine Band, The Gilded Palace of Sin is why the Burritos are widely viewed as the inventors of country rock. Indeed with this album, Hillman and Parsons carved a substantial place in music history as one of the most influential albums and bands of all time.

The influence this album and band would have on rock and rap in the following decade can't be understated. It's impossible to listen to 80s and 90s classics like The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique or Beck's Odelay without hearing echoes of the beats and samples from This Is Big Audio Dynamite all the way back in 1985.

The Gilded Palace of Sin was mastered 100% AAA analog by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the best source available- a phenomenal sounding 1/2'' safety copy of the original stereo master tapes. All of the top-end energy and ''snap'' of the original A&M LP is preserved, while the bass foundation is fully restored to make this new Intervention reissue the definitive listening experience for this classic LP!

Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, a true poet who invented most of his lyrics on the spot and never seemed to run out of new ideas, was a blues giant of post-war blues whose style was rooted in pre-war Texas traditions. While he cranked up his amp to fierce proportions when performing for his friends at Houston juke joints, producers who recorded him for the so-called folk-blues market usually insisted that he use an acoustic guitar for more "authentic" results. Either way, Lightnin' seldom made a bad record, and this June 4, 1963, session on which he played acoustic was among his finest, thanks much to the sensitive support of bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Herbie Lovelle, who did a remarkable job of following his irregular bar patterns and abrupt song endings.

Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Speakers Corner)

Mozart wrote the Divertimento No. 1 at the age of six, while A Musical Joke and Eine kleine Nachtmusik were composed shortly before his death.

From what one hears, apparently only a few music lovers enjoy listening to Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Far too often has it been performed routinely rather than being filled with life. This recording is quite different: living up to his reputation, Karl MÜnchinger proves that this favourite can be imbued with significance.

The historical roote of the serenade lie in the suite which consists of varied contrasting dance movements. In the spirit of this tradition, MÜnchinger offers a clear and unfussed interpretation which is absolutely credible and has a freshness rarely heard. The ensemble plays both cheerfully and and wittily. In A Musical Joke, Mozart parodies amateurish composers of his own era, and the orchestra quite obviously participates in the fun.
This LP is distinguished by its musical and tonal balance and is one of DECCA's best sound recordings.

    Musicians:

    • Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra

    • Karl MÜnchinger (conductor)

Recording: November 1960, Victoria Hall at Geneva by Roy Wallace

    Production: James Walker

    TODD RUNDGREN'S DEBUT MASTERWORK!!!!

First Time Audiophile Vinyl & Gatefold Cover Presentation

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the original Bearsville Records tapes

As founding member of the premiere late sixties power pop rockers Nazz, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter
and producer Todd Rundgren was barely in his 20's when he began his long solo journey with success as one of the music
industry's most prolific and celebrated rock artists.
His first solo album Runt showed a dazzling array of songs, displaying not only his rock and roll side but ventures into
jazz, R&B, eastern and blues. With help from his friends Hunt and Tony Sales, the power trio nailed one of the finest albums
of the classic rock era and also catapulted Todd Rundren's marquee as a singer/songwriter with his smash hit single We
    Gotta Get You A Woman.

Ever the rock journeyman, Todd Rundgren had already produced, mixed or played on albums by legendary recording
artists like The Band and Paul Butterfield. Always called on to bring his musical genius for others, his initial hit recordings
that make up the Runt album show how versatile and important the artist is. Check out his burning guitar riffs on album
opener Broke Down And Busted or the gritty country blues feel of Once Burned, plus the New York funk/jazz of I'm In The
Clique, three fan favorites that truly have stood the test of time.
Known to write a hit ballad more than a few times in his career, Todd goes on record early here with one of his finest
tracks ever with his brilliant Believe In Me. Followed closely by his masterpiece We Gotta Get You A Woman, even more pop
sounds continue with his classic medley Baby Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands, and the haunting
Beach Boys/Gregorian Chant feel of There Are No Words.

This amazing album hasn't been on vinyl for several decades that is until now Friday Music is honored to announce
