    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands. Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me. I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana. - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com

Rightfully considered one of Kenny Dorham's best, this album features great originals and great trumpet playing. The superb cast consists of Hank Mobley, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The title tune and Philly Twist are often heard, but the entire album represents a great composing achievement for KD.

    Afro-Cuban

One of the truly great trumpeters, Kenny Dorham had his own sound, was a skilled songwriter and was a first-rate talent scout who is credited with discovering Joe Henderson. One of the early beboppers, he perfectly led the way to hard bop in both his playing and his writing. Dorham recorded a series of exciting albums for Blue Note. Afro-Cuban was the first and one of the most stirring. Dating from 1955, its mixture of Latin music and hard bop was ahead of its time. Using such notables as Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson and Art Blakey (whose drumming is dazzling throughout) plus percussionist Patato Valdes, Dorham contributes memorable originals, colorful arrangements that perfectly set up the solos, and his distinctive trumpet. Kenny Dorham, who plays with passion and intensity throughout this set, leads the all-star group through such numbers as "K.D.'s Motion," "Minor's Holiday" and the mambo of "Basheer's Dream." Even the set's only ballad, "Lotus Flower," is just barely restrained enough to keep the ensemble from exploding. This album will raise the temperature in any room by at least five degrees.

The Jazz Messengers At The Cafe Bohemia, Volume 1

Remastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman from the Original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note Master Tapes

For Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, it all began in 1955. One could trace the beginnings of hard bop to the underrated classic recordings that Blakey and Horace Silver made with Miles Davis in the early 1950s, and there was an important pre-Messengers quintet that they had with Clifford Brown and Lou Donaldson in 1954. But it was the 1955 group which debuted on the Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers album that really launched both Blakey's band and the Blue Note label's commitment to recording the most exciting hard bop recordings ever heard. A few months later the same group, with Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley, recorded two albums at New York's CafÉ Bohemia, showing that not only was the music more durable than one record, but that it would result in dozens of superb gems. The excitement of both performing in a brand new group and creating new music can be heard throughout this dazzling disc which contains the original versions of Dorham's "Minor's Holiday" and "Prince Albert." This was history in the making and the musicians knew it.

    THE SOUND:

Why 45rpm? Simply...Because it sounds better! 180 gram pressings versus 200 gram? Music Matters, Lt. uses 180 gram pressings for the simple reason that they believe 180 gram weight is more than sufficient to provide a near perfect pressing. When Music Matters asked their friends at Record Technology Inc. for their recommendation to achieve the highest possible quality pressings their answer was unequivocal... go with 180 gram!

Upgrading Connections at Acoustech! It goes without saying that there are many controversies and debates in the perfectionist audio/LP collector market. But one area of near universal agreement is the quality of mastering that emerges from Kevin Gray's custom-built AcousTech Mastering studio in Camarillo, CA. Kevin, along with Steve Hoffman, has provided many of the best sounding new and reissued albums on LP during the last 5 or 6 years working outs of AcousTech.

    THE JACKETS:

Music Matters Exclusive! Music Matters strongly feels that these Blue Note recordings deserve nothing less than the finest graphic presentation. The Music Matters Definitive 45RPM Blue Note jackets are designed to last a lifetime, using ultra-durable extra thick cardboard stock and thick, luxurious lamination... quality you'll be able to feel in your hand the moment you pick up one of these albums. In addition, Music Matters has obtained exclusive access to a treasure trove of over 30,000 original Blue Note session photos from Mosaic Images for use in this series. The gatefold opens to display these session photos in stunning high resolution - four times sharper than original Blue Note jacket photos.

    THE REVIEWS:

Hear what Michael Fremer, Wayne Garcia and others are saying about the Blue Note Definitive 45rpm Reissue Series from Music Matters, Ltd:
They're BIG and open and definitely work in stereo because they're not hard left/right stereo. The cymbals are so chimey and the skins so open! Even Rudy's typical boxy piano isn't too bad. These are going to be really good....!!!! (Real time reaction after hearing his first test pressing of Horace Parlan's Speakin' My Piece LP.) - Michael Fremer, Stereophile Magazine

I've heard a lot of Blue Note originals and myriad reissues over the years, but based on the sample test pressings heard so far, none-and I mean none-convey the intensity of living, breathing music-making the way the Music Matter's Blue Note series does. The sense of air, texture, and dynamic pop in these grooves is astonishing. - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers "The Big Beat" and Horace Parlan, "Speakin' My Piece." And if this is any indication of what's to come, I advise you to get on the list now, before this collection is sold out. - Albert Porter, www.positive-feedback.com

The Music Matters 45s have all immediacy and add a free-flowing naturalness that is surprising at first but very easy to get used to. - Marc Mickelson, www.soundstage.com

There are many reasons why Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers is an album that simply must be in every serious jazz collection. This set from 1955 was both the debut of the Jazz Messengers and the first significant Horace Silver album. The original and best recordings of two of Silver's most popular and enduring originals, "The Preacher" and "Doodlin,'" are among the many memorable highpoints. The fiery and lyrical playing of Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley ranks with the very best of their careers, and the explosive drumming of Art Blakey is frequently unbelievable. The Jazz Messengers, Blakey and Silver virtually launch hard bop on this thrilling set, a true classic.

    Blue Note Reissue

How do these new deluxe re-issues stack up to the alternatives? Not surprisingly, the big difference comes from the 45-RPM cutting. The faster cutting speed creates greater dynamic range and the sense of more air around the instruments, which stand out in better relief and give that you-are-there feel. The tradeoff requires you to flip the record twice as often, a small price to pay for this level of enhanced realism. These new issues maintain that timbral accuracy and at the same time bring out the piano sound like never before, for the first time Blue Note re-issues sound right. Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi+, Issue 57

This album is unique within Lee Morgan's vast and rich Blue Note discography. With then current employer Art Blakey, band mate Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, the trumpeter abandons time constraints and stretches out on four, soulful, hard-bop compositions (the first and the last are by Cal Massey). These hard bop masters are constantly inspired by Blakey's explosive grooves.

    Point Of Departure

Point Of Departure is not only one of the greatest jazz recordings of 1964, but of all time. The stellar lineup (Eric Dolphy, Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and a teen aged Tony Williams) was given a set of challenging compositions by the brilliant pianist and composer Andrew Hill. This group created the album known as Point of Departure, an acknowledged modern day classic and one of Blue Notes most extraordinary recordings. Andrew Hill was a quiet revolutionary, but he was every bit as original in his conception as Thelonious Monk. Hill extended, twisted and turned hard bop into his own very fresh and personal music. Like Eric Dolphy, Hill spawned few imitators. His conception was so pure, and so unique, both as a player and as an arranger-composer that nearly a half century later, Point Of Departure remains a brilliant touchstone of modern jazz.

Page One is one of the most brilliant recording debuts in jazz history. While most first efforts feature a promising jazz musician in their early stages when they sound a bit like their musical heroes since they are in the process of developing their own original voices. Page One is much different. Joe Henderson, who was 26 at the time, was already fully formed. His sound was immediately recognizable and his ability to play both inside (hard bop) and outside (explorative jazz) at the same time made him unique from the beginning of his career.Henderson began his career playing locally in Detroit. After serving in the military and having a brief stint with organist Jack McDuff, he joined trumpeter Kenny Dorham's group in 1962. Dorham championed Henderson and helped get him signed to Blue Note. For Page One, Henderson utilized Dorham, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Pete La Roca for a remarkable set of forward-looking and passionate jazz. Page One includes the earliest recordings of Dorham's "Blue Bossa" (which has been a standard ever since), "La Mesha" and four Henderson originals including "Recorda Me." Henderson and Dorham make for a perfect team as they show on such numbers as the swinging "Jinrikisha," the explosive "Homestretch" and the blues "Out Of The Night." Dorham, a veteran from the bebop era, effectively passed the torch to Joe Henderson who from this point on would make a superb series of timeless recordings. Page One was a giant first step in a very significant career.

Since his days with the Bud Powell Trio, drummer Art Taylor was an invaluable member of the Blue Note recording family. A.T.'s Delight is the only album made under his own name for the label and it is a remarkable one. Choosing great compositions by Coltrane, Monk, Denzil Best and Kenny Dorham, Taylor assembled a great quintet fronted by Dave Burns and Stanley Turrentine, often adding Patato's congas to the proceedings. The unique and varied arrangements and great playing pay tribute to the drummer's exceptional song selection.

    In 'N Out

From the moment that Kenny Dorham picked a 25-year old Joe Henderson out of obscurity in 1962 and had him join his band, it was obvious that Henderson was a very powerful force, a young giant who sent shock waves through the jazz world. Henderson, who had a very distinctive sound from the start along with the ability to play both "inside" and "outside," sounded very much at home whether playing bebop or free improvisations. He also proved to be a perfect musical brother for Dorham. Henderson's In 'N Out album finds the two horns expressing similar ideas, blending together perfectly, and creating memorable music that is beyond description. Every note that Dorham and Henderson play on this classic album is passionate, intense and meaningful. While most young musicians would be in awe if teamed with Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Richard Davis and Elvin Jones, Henderson not only had no difficulty playing with those masters, but he raised the intensity level and forced them to keep up with him. Rudy Van Gelder brilliantly captured this group, which has never sounded better than on this must-have reissue.

    Hard Bop

Cut from the Original Analog Mono Master Tapes by Kevin Gray and Robert Pincus & Pressed at RTI

Numbered Limited Edition of Only 2500 Copies

Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time have passed through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Wayne Shorter and Donald Byrd, among many others. However brief their stay, working with the demanding and full-throttle drummer not only increased their visibility, but also their chops and interpretive capacity. Blakey's ability to drum up the best players in the game may have even eclipsed his superhuman ability to play drums.

Altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Bill Hardman, bassist Spanky deBrest, and pianist Sam Dockery join the fold here to along with Blakey deliver whole-bop goodness on five propulsive, fiery tracks. True to its title, this LP bops hard, with a ferocious swing, boundless energy and telepathic communication between players - especially Blakey and Hardman. Considering the rhythmic demands of Blakey's locomotive playing style, this was an incredible achievement.

Impex Records has cut this gorgeous, limited edition (2,500 pressings) 180-gram LP with the original analog mono master tapes and without computer processing of any kind. You hear all the vivacious interplay that occurred on that weekend in 1957 when Blakey and crew forged a bold new vision of muscular, funky jazz. This is music that still resonates over 50 years later. Not to be missed!

    Point Of Departure

Cut At 33 1/3 RPM By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note Master Tapes

Pressed On 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl LP By RTI

Top Quality Gatefold Packaging With Laminated Covers & High Quality Session Photos

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system.

I have my two new Blue Note LPs here and as I sit writing this I am listening to the Dexter Gordon, WOW!sitting here listening to this wonderful music, just clean, no background noise, a black background, like the studio that they recorded this in, it is wonderful. The instruments coming out of the sound stage positioned as they were recorded, this is a real treat. Miller Steel, Acoustic Sounds customer

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge.

I have just listened, in succession, to my mono and early stereo versions of each LP. I have purchased other similar reissues over the years, but find the engineering and pressing of this 45rpm/180 series to be superior to all to others. This is particularly since I find many new releases to be of inferior quality or handling during manufacture, despite being re-engineered and of heavier vinyl. Barry Paulson, Acoustic Sounds customer

Dexter Gordon connects immediately with the sublime rhythm section of Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on this, his second Blue Note album. The material ranges from Drew originals to pieces from Gordon's score for the Los Angeles production of The Connection to stunning performances of the standards The End Of A Love Affair and Smile.
