Cut At 33 1/3 RPM By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note Master Tapes

Pressed On 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl LP By RTI

Top Quality Gatefold Packaging With Laminated Covers & High Quality Session Photos

This is one of the rarest of all Blue Note albums, and one that is a must for record collectors. The Francy Boland/Kenny Clarke big band was one of the most exciting orchestras of the 1960s and '70s. Much less known but also brilliant was a unique octet co-led by Boland and Clarke just prior to the big band. Called The Golden Eight, the group, in addition to pianist Boland and drummer Clarke, includes the dazzling hard bop trumpeter Duscko Gojkovic, alto sax, tenor sax, string bass and top musicians on both alto horn and baritone horn. The latter two horns were hardly ever featured in a jazz setting and they really add a great deal to the sound of the ensembles. The debut recording by the Golden Eight from 1961 is up to the level of the best Blue Note albums of the time even if few know about it. Mixing together inventive versions of standards with Boland's memorable originals, this obscure classic will amaze today's listeners.

    Django

Originally released on Prestige in 1955, but actually recorded during three disparate sessions that occurred sporadically from 1953-1955, Django features some of the earliest recorded output from the Modern Jazz Quartet which includes Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums).

The warm, sophisticated nature of the material here is readily apparent from the get go courtesy of opener and album namesake, Django, a fine dedication to the memory of guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt. The set is rounded out by graceful takes on Gillespie's One Bass, the Gershwin's But Not For Me, Vernon Duke's Autumn In New York and a handful of accomplished Lewis originals.

    Afternoon In Paris (Speakers Corner)

It was in Paris that John Lewis co-led this 1956 date with Sacha Distel, a French guitarist who never became well known in the U.S. but commanded a lot of respect in French jazz circles. The same can be said about the other French players employed on Afternoon In Paris -- neither tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen nor bassist Pierre Michelot were huge names in the U.S., although both were well known in European jazz circles. With Lewis on piano, Distel on guitar, Wilen on tenor, Michelot or Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke or Connie Kay on drums, the part-American, part-French group of improvisers provides an above-average bop album that ranges from Willow Weep For Me, All The Things You Are, and I Cover The Waterfront to Milt Jackson's Bags' Groove and Lewis' title song. The big-toned Wilen was only 19 when Afternoon In Paris was recorded, but as his lyrical yet hard-swinging solos demonstrate, he matured quickly as a sax man. A mythic LP and one of the best recorded in France!!!

    Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (2LP)

Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud is a 1958 French film directed by Louis Malle. It was released as Lift to the Scaffold in the UK. The film was nothing special, but it did accomplish one thing: it proposed a new ideal of cinematic realism, a new way to look at a woman. Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's Soundtrack. He showed Davis a screening of the movie, and afterwards Miles knew exactly how to portray the smoky hazed or frantic scenes through sonic imagery. On December 4 1957, he brought four French Jazzmen (Barney Wilen / tenor saxophone, RenÉ Urtreger / piano, Pierre Michelot bass and Kenny Clarke drums) to the recording studio Le Poste Parisien Studio without having them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room. Eventually Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud has become a great achievement of artistic excellence.

For the first time since its original release in 1958, Music On Vinyl combined the original soundtrack and the additional recordings and created an essential 2LP set with the original artwork.

In 1963, the year when Our Man In Paris was recorded, Dexter Gordon turned 40 and moved to Europe for what would be a dozen-year stay. Gordon had been the first important bebop tenor-saxophonist and a giant of Jazz since 1945. After some time off the scene in the ?50s, he was signed to Blue Note. He returned with full force, playing with power, wit and his trademark huge sound, creating one masterpiece after another. On Our Man In Paris, he is clearly inspired by the playing of the innovative bebop pianist Bud Powell, himself at the peak of his powers, bassist Pierre Michelot and the pioneering bop drummer Kenny Clarke. Gordon plays chorus after chorus of fresh, swinging ideas on such tunes as Scrapple From The Apple, Broadway and A Night In Tunisia,? making these Jazz standards sound as if they were written for him. This blazing bebop date is a constant joy.

The great tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is heard in top form on this near-classic quartet set. Assisted by pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Kenny Dennis, Griffin is exuberant on The Congregation (which is reminiscent of Horace Silver's The Preacher), thoughtful on the ballads, and swinging throughout. It's recommended for bop collectors.

    My Favorite Picture Of You

As one of the most revered songwriters of his generation, Clark embodies the term "songwriter's songwriter." The simplicity of the recording shines brightly while capturing Clark's beautifully understated and road worn vocals. Clark co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on My Favorite Picture Of You and dug very deep for each performance on this truly inspired collection.

The album's heartfelt title track was written for Susanna Clark, Guy's wife of 40 years, and a successful songwriter in her own right, who passed away in 2012. If a picture says a thousand words, then the cover photo of My Favorite Picture Of You declares an entire life. The cover depicts Clark, slightly blurred in the background, holding up an old photo of his beloved from the 1970s. According to Clark, Susanna walked in and found he and friend, the late Townes Van Zandt drunk, again. She stormed out of the house, which is when the Polaroid was taken.

The song is a loving tribute that melts your heart while making you smile. As a master songwriter, Guy Clark has always made us smile by infusing his wry wit into thoughtful storytelling.
Clark's vocals on My Favorite Picture Of You exude truth, wisdom and warmth, only touching on the insight he has gained from an extraordinary life. From the delicate sweetness of "Cornmeal Waltz" to the poignant story of the veteran returned a changed man in "Heroes" to the determined "Hell Bent On A Heartache," Clark delivers a standout album in a four-decade career overflowing with high points.

In 2004, Guy Clark was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He received the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and in 2013, he received the Academy of Country Music's Poet's Award, along with Hank Williams. However, Clark's multiple Grammy Award nominations and accolades merely hint at the immeasurable impact his songs and recordings have had. He has been a mentor to artists such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell and his songs have been covered by a multitude of artists, including Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, David Allen Coe, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffet, Asleep At The Wheel and many others. After 40 years of songwriting, Guy Clark continues to be lauded and admired by his peers, critics and artists young and old from different genres...and he is not done yet.

    Dublin Blues

Available On Vinyl For The First Time

Dublin Blues is an album by American singer-songwriter Guy Clark, originally released in 1995.

A mere three years after Boats to Build, Guy Clark offered Dublin Blues, a record filled with sizzle, inspiration, and his
best batch of songs in years. Teaming with Miles Wilkinson for the third time and using in the studio for the first time
his road band -- which included Über guitarist and singer Darrell Scott -- Clark delivered a batch of searing portraits,
intimate observations, first-person narratives, and one dumb throwaway cut ("Baby Took A Limo to Memphis").
As usual, some old friends return to the fold -- Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Sam Bush, Verlon Thompson, Kenny
Malone, and Suzy Ragsdale -- but there were new faces at the time that joined in like Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Nanci
    Griffith, and Kathy Mattea.

The magic begins with the title track. Haunted Celtic melodies played on the fiddle and a mandolin with an acoustic
guitar usher in a country song that could be from the countryside of Ireland. With Mattea on the backing vocals,
the listener is transported between worlds in time and space. "Black Diamond Strings" is a friendly little number
about what else: guitar strings! Its catchy hook and singalong chorus make it a Clark winner. "Shut Up and Talk to
Me" features Scott playing the swinging blues as Clark counts off the music like a fierce memory. "Stuff That Works"
is another of Clark's quiet observation tunes, where his words speak volumes and the instruments underline their
meanings. It's a workingman's anthem sung seemingly from the workshop bench. But "Hank Williams Said It Best,"
"Tryin' to Try," "Cape," and "Hangin' Your Life on the Wall" are all tremendous in their scope and intimacy. They are
full of dimension and depth, and Wilkinson gives them textures.

The set ends with a re-recording of the spooky yet shattering elegy "The Randall Knife" Clark cut on Better Days. The
difference here is age. The view Clark sings from is one of distance and age. "The Randall Knife" doesn't feel quite
so spooky this time out, but it does resonate with empathy and even tenderness. As it winds to a close, the listener
is left not in bewildered silence but in awe that such a bond exists at all.

    Jazz Composers Workshop

The Jazz Composers' Workshop album, originally released on Savoy in 1956, is made up of two sessions-recorded on 31 October 1954 (side A and tracks 5 & 6 on side B), and 30 January 1955 (tracks 1-4 on side B)-that were part of Mingus' influential "Jazz Composers' Workshop", a forum intended to give young jazz composers the opportunity to play and record their own compositions. The 1954 session-a sextet line-up featuring Charles Mingus (bass), John La Porta (clarinet & alto sax), Teo Macero (tenor & baritone sax), George Barrow (tenor & baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano) and Rudy Nichols (drums)-was made up entirely of Mingus originals, with the exception of the 1925 standard "Tea For Two". Mingus' "Body & Soul", found here, did not appear on the original LP. The 1955 date-a quartet session led by pianist Wally Cirillo, and featuring Mingus on bass, tenor-saxophonist Teo Macero, and drummer Kenny Clarke-was actually intended as a showcase for four compositions by Cirillo, and featured one of the first, if not THE first, jazz composition to be based on a 12-tone row, "Transeason".

    Jackie's Bag (Out Of Stock)

This 1959 12 is made up of two distinct sessions, including Jackie McLeans first as a leader for the label. These sides helped establish him as one of the finest young alto voices on the jazz scene. Although a strong album through-and-through, the strongest material lay in the interplay between the altoist and the still under-appreciated tenor Tina Brooks. A great and unique alto/tenor tandem was born and sadly short-lived, due to Brooks demise at a young age. But the handful of selections they were able to create on this and a few other Blue Note releases are superb. Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew and Billy Mitchell collectively make McLeans album debut, memorable. As part of the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Reissue Series this reissue was mastered and cut from the original analog master tapes on Classics ALL TUBE MONO cutting system and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. This release like all in the Classic Blue Note Signature LP Series is pressed in our proprietary non-groove guard flat profile featuring the deep groove in the center label!
