    Mendelssohn & Bruch Violin Concertos

Karajan took the young Anne-Sophie Mutter under his wing in the early 1980s and together they produced the of
Mendelssohn's and Bruch's famous violin concertos. Mutter said: "Karajan taught me to find the common thread
that runs through a score, to think the music through to its logical conclusion not simply to juxtapose notes in long
overarching paragraphs but to place them in the service of the musical idea. This is something that has lodged in
    my memory with particular force.

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 (Speakers Corner)

Russia in the year 1953. After the October Revolution this was probably one of the most eventful epochs in the whole of the 20th century as far as social development and Art were concerned. When Stalin's reign of terror at last came to an end Shostakovich was able to realize his artistic ideas without fear of political persecution. And this is precisely the reason for regarding the premiere performance of his Tenth Symphony, in December 1953, as a gesture of freedom after years of discrimination. Shostakovich wanted his music to reflect human feelings and passions - and indeed the rugged first movement is filled with melancholy. Many biographers have identified a brutal portrait of the dictator Stalin in the strained mechanism and whip-lash rhythm of the following Allegro. The third and fourth movements take on a brighter character and are filled with song-like melody which leads to a splendid Finale.

Herbert von Karajan and his Berlin orchestra made the present recording just a few years after the work's composition; even today it is still considered one of the very best performances of this unique work.

Recording: November 1966 at Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin, by GÜnter Hermanns and Hans Weber

    Production: Otto Gerdes

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra (Speakers Corner)

The opening fanfare from Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus spoke Zarathustra) is known to everyone since it was 'rediscovered' in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey and consequently employed time and again in TV ads. At the turn of the century, however, renowned music critics asked themselves whether they should even bother to listen to the rest of the work, a symphonic poem, which - they presumed - was a narration in music of Nietzsche's book. In what is probably his most famous orchestral composition, Strauss, however, freely associated the words of the Saxon poet and philosopher when putting them into music by using the key of C major to depict nature, and the greatly contrasting key of B major for humanity.

Once again Herbert von Karajan proves himself a distinguished tour guide through the wistful, secretive and bleak sound world through which Strauss has his questing hero wander. And the Berlin Philharmonic thank him with captivating, meltingly beautiful violins, deep growling basses, and steely winds. One recalls with pleasure the legendary leading violinist Michel SchwalbÉ, who plays the solo part with immense feeling and profundity. Enhanced by a perfected analogue recording technique, this disc is a wise choice when it comes to Strauss.

Classics Today writes: "This is a work that plays to Karajan's strengths. Primarily, it demands supreme virtuosity from the orchestral strings and brass. Karajan and his Berliners are in their element here. It almost goes without saying that this version of the Adagietto is the most gorgeous in the catalog." Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben was Karajan's very first recording as the Berlin Philharmonic's music director and his first post-war recording for Deutsche Grammophon. Bizet - L'Arlesienne & Carmen

180 gram Audiophile Vinyl Cut from the Original Analogue EMI Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!

Although associated mainly with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Herbert von Karajan was effectively (though never officially) the chief conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra (which EMI Producer Walter Legge had founded in 1945) from 1948 to 1954 and built the orchestra into one of the finest in the world. Although Karajan signed to Deutsche Grammophon in 1959, he would return to EMI in future years for occasional projects (like the Beethoven Triple Concerto on HIQLP006 and Mozart Symphonies on HIQLP023).

In the original September 1959 review of the stereo release Thomas Hearns of the GRAMOPHONE wrote: ...this Karajan performance is in... the highest class...Karajan gets beautiful and brilliant performances, superb playing from the Philharmonia and a first-rate recording...

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

Pressed on 180g vinyl to audiophile standards at the Vinyl Factory, Hayes, using the old EMI Records presses.

Sibelius Symphony No. 5 Finlandia (Awaiting Repress)

Before he was appointed music director for life of the Berlin Philharmonic, Karajan was closely associated with the Philharmonia in its early years, although he never held an official title with the orchestra. The founder of the Philharmonia and legendary EMI Producer, Walter Legge, was against appointing an official principal conductor but it was Karajan who built the orchestra into one of the finest ensembles in the world, and made numerous recordings for EMI, including all the Beethoven symphonies and stereo gems like this Sibelius recording.

Recorded on 20, 21 & 23 September 1960 (Symphony No.5) and 5 & 6 January 1959 (Finlandia) at Londons famous Kingsway Hall venue. Produced by Walter Legge and Engineered by Douglas Larter (Harold Davidson Finlandia).

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS80 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional playback head.

    Mozart Symphonies

Cut from the Original Analogue EMI Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!

Originally issued as a boxed set of all the late Mozart Symphonies (from No.35 to No.41, complete with rehearsal disc), these recordings are generally considered to be the most successful Karajan made of these works and although it is still very much Mozart in the Grand Manner, the performances manage to combine a richness and beauty of sound with vigorous rhythmic detail, superbly caught by the EMI engineers.

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

In the original September 1971 review Trevor Harvey of the GRAMOPHONE wrote:

"There is surely no doubt about Karajan's quality as a Mozartian; if there is, these performances should dispel them... First of all, there is gusto in plenty - this is no 'eighteenth-century drawing room' approach to Mozart; but since the orchestra is the Berlin Philharmonic there is never any exuberance conveyed at the expense of fine orchestral playing. At the same time, there is plenty of tender affection... No.40 is not as dark as some conductors make it and... beautifully... played. No.41 is splendid throughout, with really superb playing of the great finale."

A coloratura soprano who in the late 1990s became one of the most noticed new names on the international operatic circuit, Sumi Jo was a discovery of the flamboyant German conductor Herbert von Karajan. A striking beauty, she owed her initial celebrity in part to video: the conductor arranged for her a prominent role in his Karajan in Salzburg video production. Here, Sumi Jo is joined by tenor Alesandro Safina and Neues Rheinisches Kammerorchester Koln led by David Firman.

The Play 33 1/3 LP Series is a 1st LP issue project of masterpiece albums which have never been released on LP. The albums are released by Universal Music Korea and the heavyweight LP vinyl is pressed by Pallas in Germany. Khiov designs the project, reforms the original artworks for LP size and produces the gatefold jackets.
