    Press On

June Carter Cash has lived a charmed life: as a child member of her name-sake kin, The Carter Family, late-night duets with Elvis Presley, a movie appearance with Robert Duvall, romance with James Dean, and a Grammy Award-winning performing and songwriting career with her husband Johnny Cash.

But, to hear her sing such moving hymns as Diamonds in the Rough is to enjoy the holy, country hospitality of a simple countrywoman of a pure and spiritual heart. On Press On are other such gems as a touching, acoustic version of Ring of Fire, which June co-wrote. Throughout this album, June plays the Autoharp, a type of strummed dulcimer that lends a light, bouncy feel to these pieces that often contain no traditional rhythm section. She displays a worldly sensibility on such folk-rock numbers as the bitter Losin You and humor mixed with wisdom in Tiffany Anastasia Lowe,a song for her granddaughter, the child of daughter Carlene Carter and husband Nick Lowe. June concludes this warm and personal release as she began it, with a moving spiritual rendition of her familys standard, Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

Press On was originally released in 1999 on the tiny Risk Records label. The album immediately garnered tremendous press accolades, culminating with a Grammy award that year. Risk Records went under shortly after release and Press On has been out of print ever since. Dualtone is proud to make this album available on vinyl for the very first time. Press On features guest performances from Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, Rodney Crowell and Norman Blake.

    Out Among The Stars

Throughout his five decades in music, Johnny Cash was unwavering in his dedication to his sound and style. Starting with Sun Records in 1955 through his days at Columbia and beyond, Cash always knew exactly what he wanted to do and exactly how it should sound. Everything he did, all the music he created was definitively Johnny Cash.

By 1980, the business of country music had changed to incorporate sounds that were incongruous with Cash's. His signature blend of folk and that boom-chicka-boom beat was out of vogue amongst the slick string-laden countrypolitan sounds that had become popular. This shift left all-time greats like Cash in the odd place of being revered, but not selling albums. In one effort to enhance his commercial appeal, Columbia Records paired Cash with producer Billy Sherrill who was having major success with this new country sound. While Sherrill selected many of the songs, it was Cash's trademark sound that dominated. The sessions were nothing short of magic. Cash employed an expanded band, featuring a young Marty Stuart on guitar and fiddle as well as long-time duet partners June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings. Much of what was recorded was locked away in the vault lost and not to be heard again. Until now.

Discovered in 2012, Out Among The Stars is truly a lost, previously unreleased Johnny Cash album. These aren't alternate takes or different versions of songs that you've heard. These are brand new songs to the Cash canon. Completed in 2013 by Johnny's only son John Carter Cash, Out Among The Stars is a pivotal Johnny Cash album lost in time, and now ready to become a classic.

    At Folsom Prison

Ranked 88/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison fully captures Cashs gritty intensity and hard-headed humanity, capturing a high-energy set performed for an equally spirited audience. With a set list tailored for the occasion, Cash focuses on songs dealing with crime and imprisonment, balancing dark subject matter with wry, playful humor. The album opens, appropriately enough, with the venerable Folsom Prison Blues, and continues with such outlaw anthems as Cocaine Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, The Wall and I Got Stripes, alongside such Cash classics as I Still Miss Someone, Orange Blossom Special and Jackson, with the latter track featuring Cashs wife and frequent duet partner June Carter. The album closes on an inspirational note with Greystone Chapel, a song written by convict Glen Shirley, which Cash and his band learned especially for this show.

Johnny Cashs five-decade musical career was loaded with bigger-than-life landmark moments. None were more memorable than the Man in Blacks historic concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin State Prison, and the beloved albums that documented those shows. Cashs passion for prison reform and rehabilitation inspired him to perform a series of concerts for inmate audiences, and two of these unique events were documented on Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. These albums, originally released in 1968 and 1969 respectively, remain among Cashs best-selling and best-loved recordings. At the time of their original release, they revitalized his career, and played a crucial role in his crossover from the country music world to the mainstream pop charts.

Drawing on the rich musical tradition of rural Appalachia, by 1930 the Carter family had become an American institution. Often called the first family of country music, the original Carter family consisted of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara and Saras cousin Maybelle. Maybelles daughter June Carter, would go on to become a star in her own right and famously marry Johnny Cash. Maybelle Carters pioneering guitar style not only revolutionized American music, but she was also one of the first white musicians to use the guitar as a lead instrument. In February 1929 the Carter family returned to Camden, NJ for their third-ever recording session (for Victor) laying down 12 plus tracks of which 5 can be heard here. Their next recording session, also for Victor was in Atlanta Georgia in November of that same year (just a month after the stock market crash), where they recorded their classic Wabash Cannonball, among others.

    American III: Solitary Man

For younger generations of musicians, having their song cut by Johnny Cash must be a little like scaling the Washington Monument. On his third album
for producer Rick Rubin's American label, Cash makes Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down sound like a companion classic to I Walk the Line. He
transforms U2's One into a sturdy testament of plainspoken faith, while he plumbs the netherworld of Nick Cave's The Mercy Seat and Will Oldham's I
See a Darkness. Amid more familiar fare (including Neil Diamond's title track), the album's sing-along standout is the deadpan, down-and-out, talking
blues of Nobody. Cash's recent originals have the age-old purity of Appalachian music, while the traditional closing of Wayfaring Stranger offers
bittersweet benediction. Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, and June Carter Cash provide vocal cameos. -Don McLeese

    Johnny99

Although it went virtually unnoticed upon its initial release in 1983, this intriguing record momentarily put a halt to Johnny Cash's precipitous artistic decline and kept the promise of his resurgence alive. Recorded in Los Angeles with session men including Marty Stuart, Norton Buffalo, Jo-El Sonnier, and producer Brian Ahern, Johnny 99 focuses on the work of younger songwriters--Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kennerley, Guy Clark--and might be the lone oasis in an otherwise barren decade. The solemn opener, Springsteen's Highway Patrolman, sets the tone as Cash turns a very restrained reading into an emotional powerhouse, supported by Hoyt Axton's baritone growl. The Springsteen-penned title track becomes a honky-tonk anthem as Cash delivers the Boss's lyrics with acute understanding. The touching Civil War ballad God Bless Robert E. Lee, the tropical/topical Joshua Gone Barbados, and the attractive duet with June Carter on Kennerley's Brand New Dance help round out a rather diverse (for Cash) collection. Aside from the occasional guitar effect and unnecessary keyboard intrusion (it was 1983 after all), this set marks a high point of a low period.

''Johnny Cash transcends country music...he represents what American Music is all about!''

Known throughout the world as one of the major figures of post-Hank Williams country music, Johnny Cash constantly sought to expand his musical horizons and avoid being pigeonholed. Cash was at his most engagingly eclectic on Orange Blossom Special, recorded in 1964.

For starters, ''The Man In Black'' covered three tunes by Bob Dylan, then the most talked-about young singer-songwriter of the dawning folk-rock era. (''It Ain't Me Babe,'' ''Don't Think Twice, It's Alright,'' and ''Mama, You've Been On My Mind''), The Nashville musical establishment hardly embraced Dylan's mind-blowing lyrics, but Cash, knowing genius when he heard it, was the first major country star to cover Dylan's work. By the same token, he also rendered two numbers by A.P. Carter of the legendary Carter Family, who, along with Jimmy Rodgers, created the musical template that's still the model for ''traditional'' country, bluegrass, and some forms of folk. And Cash's unmistakable, tough-hewn baritone rendered the classic fiddle tune that is the title track, as well as ''Danny Boy'' (with a spoken word intro), the spiritual ''Amen'' and the traditional story-song ''The Long Black Veil.''. Cash's compositions include ''The Wall,'' one of the prison songs for which he is known, and the protest tune ''All Of God's Children Ain't Free.'' Orange Blossom Special (with liner notes by the artist and never-before seen archive photos) finds Cash backed by the Tennessee Two, his outstanding guitar/bass tandem of Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant and guest appearances by such Nashville aces as Boots Randolph on tenor sax, pianists Floyd Cramer and Bill Pursell, guitarist Norman Blake, and harmonica ace Charlie McCoy. And on Johnny Horton's ''When It's Springtime In Alaska (It's Forty Below),'' Cash is accompanied by the now-familiar female voice of June Carter.

Now It's My Turn (Pure Pleasure)

Arguably the most adventurous female jazz singer of all time, Betty Carter was an idiosyncratic stylist and a restless improviser who pushed the limits of melody and harmony as much as any bebop horn player. The husky-voiced Carter was capable of radical, off-the-cuff re-workings of whatever she sang, abruptly changing tempos and dynamics, or rearranging the lyrics into distinctive, off-the-beat rhythmic patterns. She could solo for 20 minutes, scat at lightning speed, or drive home an emotion with wordless, bluesy moans and sighs. She wasn't quite avant-garde, but she was definitely 'out'. Yet as much as Carter was fascinated by pure, abstract sound, she was also a sensitive lyric interpreter when she chose, a tender and sensual ballad singer sometimes given to suggestive asides. Her wild unpredictability kept her marginalized for much of her career, and she never achieved the renown of peers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, or Carmen McRae. What was more, her exacting musical standards and assertive independence limited her recorded output somewhat. But Carter stuck around long enough to receive her proper due; her unwillingness to compromise eventually earned her the respect of the wider jazz audience, and many critics regarded her as perhaps the purest jazz singer active in the '80s and '90s.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Drugs 'N Hymns (On Sale)

Drugs 'n Hymns is the newest release from LA-based artist Rocco Deluca. The album finds the blues-steeped musician forging a solo path armed with his National guitar, distinctively emotive voice and 10 reflective, vivid song-stories. The hypnotically spare compositions conjure a world of characters seeking a certain solace and salvation while continually mired in the disturbed darkness. The album was anti-produced by Rocco DeLuca and features guests such as the Echo Park Jubilee Tambo Flower Unsung Heroes Choir. Drugs 'N Hymns is a fascinating recording in its quiet intensity, conveying a wide swathe of emotions from quietude mixed with underlying dread to hopeful exhilaration.

Rocco DeLuca was born in Southern California surrounded by a vibrant arts community that inspired him to follow his muses at an early age. By seven he was learning to play listening to Billy Holiday, Nina Simone and the Delta Blues heroes of the 1920s. He soon crossed paths and performed with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash and June Carter and Daniel Lanois, an amazing musical association key in the evolution of DeLucas unique sound whether fronting a band or playing solo.

Says Daniel Lanois: I fully believe in DeLuca. I think that hes got the power to be a contemporary troubadour, as I see it, and I hope I can be his friend for a long time, whether I am operating in the same limelight, ahead of him, behind him, in his shadow, whatever it takes, Ill be there. The one thing that I love about Rocco DeLuca is he is driven by his own heart.

This World Oft Can Be (Discontinued) (On Sale)

On May 28, Boston-based quintet Della Mae will release their debut for Rounder, This World Oft Can Be. The album, which was produced by Bryan Sutton and mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Hole, Dinosaur Jr.) shows that like the Avett Brothers, Lumineers, and Punch Brothers, these five multitalented young women are respectful of American musical tradition, but not restricted by it, combining centuries' worth of musical influences with an emotionally tough, undeniably modern songwriting sensibility.

This World Oft Can Be's 12 songs-including such engaging originals as "Empire," "Paper Prince" "Maybeline" and the feisty title track-showcase the fivesome's world-class instrumental abilities, lilting harmonies and subtly commanding lead vocals. Although the musicians' sublime skills have already won them numerous individual honors, the album's focus is squarely on the band's emotionally potent songs and spirited, effortlessly expressive performances.

"The identity that we've developed as a band is a melting pot of our different personalities and backgrounds," asserts founder Kimber Ludiker. After having the idea at a summer festival, Kimber hand picked musicians from all over the country: singer Celia Woodsmith comes from a blues/rock background, guitarist Courtney Hartman studied at Berklee College of Music, bassist Shelby Means played with various bands in Nashville, and mandolin player Jenni Lyn Gardner was schooled in traditional bluegrass. Della Mae's members hail from all over the United States, and the five women each bring impressive musical resumes amassed in their previous ventures.

Della Mae recorded This World Oft Can Be at Cash Cabin Studio, Johnny Cash's former recording base, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. In addition to absorbing the studio's inspirational vibes, Courtney Hartman played June Carter Cash's vintage 1933 Gibson L5 Round Hole guitar on "Some Roads Lead On," while Ludiker had the honor of borrowing John Hartford's custom carved fiddle on "Letter From Down The Road."

This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983

First Pressing On Translucent Red Vinyl

It can be difficult to capture the live power of band on a studio recording. Thankfully, Lone Justice (Maria McKee, Ryan Hedgecock, Marvin Etzioni, and
Don Heffington) went into Suite 16 Studios in December of 1983 and laid down much of the set list they were packing Los Angeles area clubs with.

Recorded direct to 2-track tape by engineer David Vaught and with no overdubs, those twelve tracks can finally be heard in their entirety as This Is Lone
Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983. As Billboard's Chris Morris writes in his liner notes, the release "offers the best representation of the band in its
infancy-hot, full of piss and vinegar, and ready to take on the world."

Nine of these twelve tracks are previously unissued, and include originals (including "Soap, Soup And Salvation", which would appear on their Geffen
debut two years later) to the covers they made their
own in concert (Johnny Cash and June Carter (Cash)'s "Jackson" and "Nothing Can Stop My Loving
You," written by George Jones and Roger Miller.)

Available on LP (with the first pressing on translucent red vinyl), in addition to Morris' liners, the package contains an essay from the band's Ryan Hedgecock, as well as a remembrance of David Vaught from Marvin Etzioni and an loving endorsement from Dolly Parton. With unseen photos and memorabilia, this collection is what Lone Justice fans have been waiting for. This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983 takes us back to a time when music had an energy that was hard to contain. Thanks to that studio in Van Nuys, CA, and this release, Justice has been served!

Johnny Cash At San Quentin (Speakers Corner)

Johnny Cash was a country legend even during his lifetime, although, or perhaps because, he was very different from the numerous country singers with chequered shirts. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs.

At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. Fired by the success of his jailhouse recording, Columbia Records released At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frenetically applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered by Cash fans to be the best live recording by the 'man in black'.

    Musicians:

    • Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar)

    • June Carter Cash, Carter Family (voc)

    • Bob Wootton (electric guitar)

    • Marshall Grant (bass)

    • W.S. Holland (drums)

Recording: 24 February 1969 live at San Quentin State Prison, USA, by Neil Wilburn and Bob Breault

    Production: Bob Johnston

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    First Time on Audiophile Vinyl

Gatefold Cover presentation of his classic 1967 multi-platinum Greatest Hits LP!!!

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the original Columbia Records tapes

    Manufactured at R.T.I.

Johnny Cash was born during the great depression into a poor family in Arkansas. At a very young age he worked on the family farm
and experienced many of life's struggles. This is also the time he would develop his love for music, family and the Bible, which followed him
closely throughout his long career. In the early fifties after spending time in the Air Force, he moved to Memphis, became friends with folks
like Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and ultimately cut some sides at Sun Studios which became the catalyst
that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar, troubadour and humanitarian unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at Columbia Records knew that this young fellow named Johnny Cash was destined for superstardom. They quickly signed
the legend to a long term deal, and his first Columbia singles like his prolific Don't Take Your Guns to Town forever etched "The Man In Black"
    trademark to his name.

In 1967 after many chart topping country and pop albums and a bevy of hit singles and Grammy Awards, more fame followed as the
brass at Columbia Records honored their journeyman Johnny Cash with his first hits collection, the multi-platinum Johnny Cash's Greatest
    Hits Volume 1.

The album was a blockbuster as it topped the charts, making this a crossover hit with both country and pop audiences, proving once again that his career was of historic merit.
Filled with more hits than a roadside jukebox, the amazing album takes off with the classic duet with wife June Carter Cash and
Grammy Award winner Jackson. This chart topping single is followed up by one of his most famous songs the number one I Walk the Line.

More treasures follow with the country belter Understand Your Man and Cash's own hit interpretation of Orange Blossom Special, which truly
made the album a treasure trove of hits.
More greatest hits follow as the LP features a nice helping of solid smashes like Ring of Fire, Five Feet High and Rising, the aforementioned Don't Take Your Guns to Town, and probably one of the first Bob Dylan covers ever with his haunting It Ain't Me Babe. In total, the
album showcases eleven important Johnny Cash recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics for all time.

The superb 1976 recordings on this deluxe vinyl release, taken from a performance on the Jamboree USA Radio Concert series, suggest that the old faithful had it right all along and Johnny Cash, far from having lost any of the old magic, was as vibrant and potent in this era as he ever was. With a little help from members of the legendary Carter Family - not least Johnny's wife and life partner June - he storms through a set of both oldies and more recent tunes to rapturous applause from a clearly delighted audience.

    Stone Flower (Speakers Corner)

Around the year 1970, almost everything appeared to have been said about the style of music over the past two decades, which was a mix of samba and cool jazz. Adventurous musicians such as Luis Bonfa, Baden Powell, Charly Byrd, João and Astrud Gilberto, and the saxophonist Stan Getz lent fire and sentiment to the "new trend". First and foremost among them was Carlos Antonio Jobim, whose catchy tunes such as the ticking, shuffling song Desafinado and the genial One Note Samba were heard all over the globe.
That the man from Ipanema still had a lot to say is proved by the present album, which presents Jobim's creativity at the height of his maturity. Right from the very first number, where Urbie Green on the trombone 'sings' Tereza My Love so purely in the top register, it is clear that the late bossa with its typical rhythm is structurally far more refined than the early hot dance numbers. The melodies are woven through, as it were, with shining gold and silver threads of rhythm, and clusters of sound are light and airy. However, here and there, the musicians let their hair down, such as in the Latin classic Brazil.

With that magician of sound Deodato as arranger and conductor, and Rudy van Gelder as recording engineer, this LP is certainly a Bossa masterpiece. There's no more to be said!

    Musicians:

    • Antonio Carlos Jobim (piano, electric piano, violin, vocal, guitar)

    • Joe Farrell (soprano saxophone)

    • Urbie Green (trombone)

    • Hubert Laws (flute)

    • Eumir Deodato (guitar, arranger, conductor)

    • Harry Lookofsky (violin)

    • Ron Carter (bass)

    • Airto Moreira, Everaldo Ferreira (percussion)

    • João Palma (drums)

Recording: June 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, USA

    Production: Creed Taylor

When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Tears Of The World

On June 16, 2015, the blues world lost an outstanding artist in Mighty Sam McClain. Tears Of The World is his last album, and will remain as his legacy. McClain has sung the blues for half a century, tinged with an energy-boosting helping of soul. Since the deaths of Solomon Burke, Percy Sledge, and McClain s great inspiration Bobby Blue Bland, the soul preacher and bluesman held the status of the only surviving R&B singer of the first generation. This CD includes classics from the repertoire of legendary labels such as Hi Records, a country number from Carlene Carter, and Que Sera, Sera not exactly a typical blues song given the full rock treatment!
