    Rapturous and otherworldly. -Rolling Stone

... it's hard to suppress the inner light of Sill's work. It shines. -Pitchfork

The astonishing Judee Sill was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records, and Judee Sill the first album released on the label. Sill's music is intensely spiritual, redolent of both mysticism and divine imagery, yet grounded by great songwriting and a pure but powerful singing talent. Her songs impart incredible intimacy that is enhanced and not diminished by her sometimes complex string/orchestral arrangements (remarkably Sill arranged and conducted the strings/orchestra on her albums!).

Sill's life was tragic personally and professionally. Her father and brother were killed when Sill was young, and her tempestuous relationship with her alcoholic (and remarried) mother resulted in her leaving home at 15. She committed robberies and began a battle she was destined to lose against drug addiction. When stardom didn't follow the critical acclaim of these two albums her career never recovered. Sill was dead in 1979 at just 35. The brevity of Judee's musical legacy is vastly outweighed by the emotional power in these two extraordinary albums.

Judee Sill and Heart Food were AAA mastered directly from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

The master tapes are in fine shape, and listeners will be blown away by the increased inner detail and three-dimensionality of these achingly gorgeous recordings. These new Intervention reissues represent THE definitive listening experience for these classic LPs!

And then I heard The Kiss from 1973's Heart Food. If ever there was a song that lived up to the glorious, simultaneous heartbreaking and mending I might expect from a symphony to God, it's this. -Pitchfork

The astonishing Judee Sill was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records, and Heart Food is her second and unfortunately final album. Judee Sill

Judee Sill's debut album (as well as the debut of the Asylum label) heralded a major new talent in the airy, contemporary folk world of the early '70s. The album employed the production skills of Sill's ex-husband Bob Harris, as well as ex-Turtle and ex-Leaves Jimmy Pons, and Graham Nash (on the album's sole single, 'Jesus Was s Crossmaker'). Judee Sill featured all original compositions, many of which relied on Sill's own brand of cosmological Christian imagery to make their point. By turns spare and lavishly orchestrated, there is still a cohesive feel to all of the album; her lyrics are exceptionally poetic and her voice is smooth enough to give every song a shimmery feel. The essence of the music is folk, the execution pop: the songs feel like a comfort blanket, a statement of hope from a troubled soul.

Judee Sill is one of rock's more interesting and lesser-known stories. Because of her troubled family history she was looking for an escape of reality. After surviving a heroin addiction and a brief stint as a bank robber, Sill turned her rather intense passions to music. She released two albums and partially completed a third album before her death in 1979.

Sill's music was complex, elegantly crafted and yet completely devoid of pretension or overwrought melodrama. Unfairly lumped in with other female, proto-adult contemporary songwriters like Joni Mitchell or Carole King, Sill was much closer in spirit to Brian Wilson, Nick Drake, or one her idols, J.S. Bach. She had a gift for making very complicated things sound simple, beautiful.

The second album Judee Sill made, proved to be her last. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings for her album Heart Food (as she did on her previous album Judee Sill), Sill did all of the work herself.

    Strange Weekend (Awaiting Repress)

Strange Weekend is Porcelain Rafts debut record, yet in many ways its his 156th. Somewhere in New York, Rome, or maybe London, there is a suitcase full of tapes, minidiscs and CDs, days and days worth of music, all of it the result of Mauro Remiddis 27 years of travels across Europe, from his native Italy to London; of caravaning with the Berlin Youth Circus playing traditional gypsy Klezmer music; of reinterpreting traditional music in North Korea; and of a stint playing piano for an Off Broadway tap dance show.

Amazingly, Strange Weekend, with deep roots in so many times and places, is an album that beautifully captures the fleeting right now. Remiddis interest in movement, about capturing a momentary now en route to the next, is apparent; postcards and polaroids of buildings and faces from the street flicker past. The projects genesis lies in this visual imagery. Over the past year, Remiddi has compiled a catalogue of images, gathered from the various nooks and crannies of the internet, that have served as notes, inspiration, context and a map for Porcelain Rafts music.

Remiddis androgynous vapor of a voice weaves like a ghost between Nick Gilder and The Alessi Brothers, Julee Cruise and Judee Sill. In more contemporary terms, Porcelain Raft stands confidently on a high hill between the sounds of M83 and Beach House. Lead track Drifting In and Out is loping and anthemic; gauzy and chiming. Shapeless and Gone follows with a heavy strum reminiscent of Cosmic Dancer, full of mood and style without all the wearying excesses and feathered boas. Porcelain Rafts thesis statement hits when side-B kicks off with Unless You Speak From Your Heart. Remiddis enigmatic vocals carrying a hook so simple that you might think you sang it first; keys and bass that might make the needle jump off of your turntable; and a sense of raw sincerity that has come to trademark Remiddis songs is what ultimately resonates.

And here, the myriad travels crystallize into something visceral; you may not be able to see the visuals Remiddi holds so dear, but you can feel them throughout Strange Weekend, and they stay with you as you travel on. Strange Weekend might have been made in a small place (a Brooklyn basement, in fact), but it is huge dream-pop, with melodies and synths billowing out in all directions.

    In The Hollows

there's a thrilling feeling of freedom to it all.
    - PITCHFORK

Nat Baldwin is a musical maverick one of the
best leftfield pop albums of the year.
    -DROWNED IN SOUND

    terrifically earnest, terrifyingly intimate, and
    terribly special.
    -THE BOSTON PHOENIX

In The Hollows is Nat Baldwin's followup to 2008's People Changes. Despite his busy scheule recording and touring as the bass player for Dirty Projectors, Nat found time to write
and record his most soulful and ambitious collection of songs to date. After recording the
initial tracks at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI, Nat recruited Otto Hauser for
drums and percussion, and Rob Moose and Clarice Jensen to write string arrangements.
Discussing the album's production, Nat says I wanted to achieve a consistency throughout
that my past albums have lacked. I wanted the strings to add to the mournful quality of the
songs, weaving their way through the sonic terrain, providing emotional emphasis, but also
leaving necessary amounts of space. Albums by Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Joanna Newsom,
Antony & the Johnsons, and Bill Callahan, to name a few, provided inspiration in balancing
that intimacy with minimal, but powerful, adornments.

Much of the album was written while Nat was training for a marathon at his home in Maine.
According to Nat, I had a pretty rigorous and consistent routine of running/working out
early in the morning, and working on music all afternoon/evening. I also started reading
obsessively during this time, as I wasn't moving around much after the morning marathon
training. Some of the songs were inspired by books I was reading, and some were inspired
by my lifestyle. Blending autobiographical details with fiction, the songs cover a wide
range of topics including boxing, drowning, bodybuilding, target practice, will power, Steve
Prefontaine, competition, separation, isolation, devastation, manipulation, conflagration,
    intoxication, and suicide.

Immersive, athletic, and often profound, In the Hollows represents his clearest and most
consistent album-length statement, melodically, structurally, and lyrically. Nat explains
that I hope it is as unsettling as it is beautiful. I want it to make people feel things they
    can't describe.
