The Modern LoversLimited 1000 Numbered Copies On White Vinyl
This is the eponymous debut studio album by the American Rock band the Modern Lovers, originally released in 1976. Six tracks (Roadrunner, Astral Plane, Old World, Pablo Picasso, She Cracked and Someone I Care About) were produced by John Cale.
The Modern Lovers were formed in 1970 by teenage singer, songwriter, guitarist Jonathan Richman, augmented with Jerry Harrison (keyboards), Ernie Brooks (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Richman's friend and original band member John Felice joining them occasionally.
The Modern Lovers influenced numerous aspiring punk rock musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Sex Pistols, whose early cover of Roadrunner was placed on The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. The album was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2003, the album was listed on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.1. Roadrunner

LiveThe Modern Lovers were an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 70s and 80s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later.
Live catches Jonathan Richman at the height of his candy-floss novelty period. The music is warm and mild, almost all of it derived from 50s and early-60s models such as surf idioms and guitar instrumentals.
Live has become somewhat of a cult classic the last couple of decades and is guaranteed to get you in a good mood. Pure joy, happiness and bliss...1. I'm A Little Airplane

Ten New SongsImport
During the 9 years prior to the release of ´Ten New Songs´ (2001) the legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen spent most of his time in a Zen monastery, obsessively rewriting and polishing the lyrics for this austere collection. ´Ten New Songs´ is arguably Sharon Robinson's record as much as Cohen's as she co-wrote all the songs, plays most of the instruments and accompanies Cohen's gloomy croak with her own crooning.
This is the most subdued album Cohen's ever made. It's as if he no longer has time for anything in music or performance that could alter the meaning and force of his words. Various artists have covered Cohen's songs off this album; Eric Burdon and Katie Melua both covered 'My Secret Life' for their own albums, Jonathan Richman covered 'Here it is'.
'Ten New Songs' was the first Cohen album to be recorded and produced digitally, now enjoyable again on 180 grams vinyl.1. In My Secret Life

SuccessorAnthonie Tonnon first came to attention in his home country with the band Tono and the Finance Company. The band released two Eps and the full-length Up Here For Dancing. With dry wit and observational lyrics that recalled The Smiths and Pulp, Tonnon sang of urban life in New Zealand's cities. Anti-gentrification anthem "Marion Bates Realty" caught the attention of Beirut, who invited the band on their 2012 New Zealand tour. In 2013, Anthonie Tonnon began touring under his own name, influenced by stage techniques from the comedy and theatre worlds as much as formative influences like Jonathan Richman and Jens Lekman. He was recently named in Billboard's "list of New Zealand acts you need to know about."1. Railway Lines

Rain MachineRain Machine is a startling new musical venture from Kyp Malone, known to many as guitarist/singer for soulful art rockers TV On The Radio. For Rain Machine, Malone takes the influences that have always bubbled beneath the surface in TVOR; blues, gospel, 60s jazz, even African music, and brings them to the fore. Performing all the parts himself, Malone has fashioned a deeply personal journey through modern life, looking back on the weight of the history behind us. The result is a communiquÉ from the soul, if the Rolling Stones stripped away the glitz to find their emotional core on Exile on Main Street, then Malone has performed the same rite here, in all its murky, mercurial glory. Rain Machine will surprise some TVOR fans, stun others, but all will be transported by this dense, spiritual music. Helen of TroyTo his chagrin, John Cale's record label released his unfinished demo tapes while he was busy producing Patti Smith's groundbreaking Horses. But to his surprise, the resulting album, Helen of Troy, is considered the most stylistically cohesive of the eclectic Island Trilogy, the trio of albums Cale recorded for Island Records during the course of 1974-75. Featuring Brian Eno's lithe synthesizer, Phil Collins' expert drumming, and Cale's manic streetwise songwriting, Helen of Troy delivers more sophistication than most final cuts, and cuts deeper in its roughness.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Helen of Troy is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's engaging fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the moody content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
From the celestial opening strains of My Maria, which sounds in places like a hymn, to the teeth-gnashing Sudden Death, Cale shows us heaven, hell, and the life in between. Employing a cocktail of wild experimentation, tonal versatility, and range of emotion, Cale's compositions whip from soaring serenades like I Keep a Close Watch to the unhinged, wild-eyed Leaving It Up to You (pulled from the original release due to its reference to the murder of Sharon Tate) to the soulful, surf-derived China Sea. Eno's synthesizer casts love spells and shadows while Chris Spedding's guitar drills bluesy, ragged holes through every composition. A tormented, sinister cover of the Modern Lovers' Pablo Picasso (Cale produced the Lovers' debut) shows what you get when you replace Jonathan Richman's dreamy smile with Cale's bared teeth.
Although we'll never know what the one-time Velvet Underground cohort had in mind for the finished product, with its labyrinthine arrangements, theatrical spontaneity, and primal rawness, Helen of Troy is a gem that's better unpolished.1. My Maria

Science & Magic: A Soundtrack to the UniverseLil Bub has had her paws in the music world for quite some time now. She's tight with Steve Albini, produced a single for Kelley Deal, worked closely with David Yow, collaborated with Andrew W.K., spearheaded 50 Bands and a Cat (she's the cat), been held by Jonathan Richman, has a song written for her by Kimya Dawson, was rapped about by Aesop Rock, enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with Murder by Death, appeared in The Foo Fighters' HBO Documentary, Sonic Highways, was the July, 2014 cover story for SPIN Magazine, and famously appears on Run the Jewels' highly anticipated Meow the Jewels record made up entirely of cat sounds.
And now she's finally ready to blow minds with the very first full length concept album written by a magical space cat, and it's darn good. This is music made by a magical space cat. The songs on this album are the soundtrack to BUB's universal adventure, and a soundtrack to the universe itself. Grrr...Fronted by Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, Bishop Allen is best known for making and self-releasing an EP each month for an entire year, then reworking some of the best songs for a highly acclaimed label debut (The Broken String). The rigorous EP project, and the extensive touring that has followed it, have allowed Bishop Allen to hone their craft: writing, performing and recording music.
The resulting album, Grrr..., reveals that after five years of comparisons to other artists like Jonathan Richman, The Kinks, Bright Eyes, Spoon, etc., in rave reviews from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly and many others, Bishop Allen has developed an artistry and sound that are unmistakably their own. One thing that distinguishes Bishop AllenÆs music is the quality of the writing. RiceÆs literate lyrics, which The Los Angeles Times has praised for their ôpoetic insight,ö have a universality that has made them resonant to listeners of all ages and earned them champions ranging from the young comic actor Michael Cera to the National Public Radio host Scott Simon.
Each of the 13 tracks comprising Grrrà is a succinct composition, and yet the album also coheres seamlessly as a song cycle. The melody and/or rhythm of one track is often contiguous with the next. As always, Rice and Rudder are responsible not only for the writing, but the lionÆs share of the playing and the recording: the guitars, pianos, marimbas, ukeleles and vocals. And, as before, Darbie Nowatka shares in the singing. Otherwise, the album features contributions from a number of their friends: drums and percussion by Michael Tapper, horns by Jon Natchez and Kelly Pratt, and strings by Daniel Hart. Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, Luna, Sebadoh) offered the band some invaluable production tips and, at his famed Trout Recording studio in Brooklyn, recorded the drums and mixed the album.1. Beautiful SongsFire Records brings you a vinyl featuring over 100 of the best songs spanning the career of the legendary Jad Fair and his band Half Japanese. This comprehensive 'Best Of' compilation also includes liner notes written by Everett True.
Jad Fair is the godfather of minimalist monster art rock - a gentleman and a beast. Edwin Pouncey, The Wire.
Fitting, as this album includes every type of song that Jad has ever dreamed, other than the 'Monster songs and love songs', I do have other songs that aren't monster songs or love songs explains Jad, but for the most part they are monster songs.. I wanted to have something from each of the albums - so it's not like a dozen songs from one album, and 10 from another. It's supposed to be an overview of everything I've done. So this selection of songs pretty much fits that bill. Everett True tells us I love him for his boundless enthusiasm and shy genius...maybe it's wrong to call Jad naive because he knows what he's doing, but he has a child-like wonderment that to me is at the core of most great music I can name. The Shaggs, Leadbelly, Jonathan Richman. He makes my feet want to move, and there's no higher compliment, I've seen Jad play concerts with a rolled-up newspaper and upturned wastebasket for rhythm, with just his voice for colour. I've also seen Jad play stadiums in precisely the same fashion - with a band behind him, sure, but with the spirit intact - in front of crowds of over 15,000, in support to Nirvana on their fi¬nal tour.

A Rainer Ptacek Tribute: The Inner FlameFire Records is proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12, 1997.
The reissues start with The Inner Flame, a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honor Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand.
Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino.
We offer up this new version to pay tribute and celebrate the man, the likes of whom I've yet to ever encounter again, and allowing a glimpse now of what he had done here on the planet and to share that embrace for ever having known him at all.
The best way here to sum up the man is perhaps by his own quote. Near the end, during his final interview, when asked the impossible question of what he thinks we are all doing here in this life, Rainer answered without hesitation: to love away the pain.LP1

Let Freedom RingImport
Prophet started his wild ride back in 1984, when Green on Red, the
seminal purveyors of American Rock-Roots, plucked him out of
Berkeley, CA and threw him in the van for an eight-year ride, and the
recording of as many albums. Since then Prophet has recorded nine
amazing solo albums and toured and recorded with the likes of
Lucinda Williams, Aimee Mann, Cake, and Jonathan Richman, not to
mention production credits for Warren Zevon, Alejandro Escovedo
and Kelly Willis. Ryan Adams, Solomon Burke and Heart have
recorded his songs, along with a host of others. Prophet has never
been one to rest on his laurels and ride it out.
For his ninth solo album Let Freedom Ring, Chuck reached out to
some musicians and talked them into going down to Mexico City, The
Biggest City in the World (pop. 25 million). Recorded at Estudio 19, a
state-ofthe- art studio (well, circa 1958 state-of-the-art anyway) with
Greg Leisz (Beck, Wilco, Emmylou Harris) coproducing.
Within three days of arriving swine flu broke out and the indignity of
having to wear blue surgical masks just to fit in.
Over the course of the next eight days, the band set about recording
¡Let Freedom Ring!, enduring a poorly timed blackout, shakedowns
by the Policia, and a 6.4 earthquake mid-take - Mexico City might only
be 4 hours away by plane but it might as well have been on the other
side of the moon. But whilst mayhem ensued, the band buckled down
to the task in hand, all set up together in a tight little bamboo lined
room with the amps cranked. Chuck played his Fender Squire, Kelly
Stoltz on backing vocals, Rusty Miller (Jason Lyte‟s band) played
bass while Drummer Ernest Boom Carter turned his sticks into
kindling. Carter played on Springsteen‟s Born To Run - he promptly
quit the E Street Band after they spent 6 months recording it. The
results can be heard from the Clash inspired opener to the power pop

Black BubblegumBlack Bubblegum is the newest LP from Eric Copeland,
and we are not kidding when we emphasize it sounds like
nothing he has done in the past. The title of the record
says it all: chewy, sticky pop that doesn't taste quite like
any chewy, sticky pop you've had before.
Recorded at Copeland's old practice space in South
Williamsburg, Black Bubblegum contains songs with
more conventional sounds and songwriting than any of
his previous releases. While there are similarities with
Copeland's earlier work in the drum patterns, major
scales and vocals, Black Bubblegum moves away from
his trademark psychedelic dub towards strange and
fantastical pop; imagine Arthur Russell going into the
studio with the Ramones. Wanting to take a more "handson"
approach to these recordings, Copeland exchanged
sample-driven tech and hardware for keyboards, guitars
and effect pedals, creating a new sound that is oddly
easy to digest despite its rejection of melody in favour of
discord and dissonance.
For a long time, Copeland considered this collection of
songs to be recordings which would never be heard. This
invariably influenced certain decisions made during the
creation of Black Bubblegum, blessing Copeland with
the unique freedom that comes from making music never
intended to be heard, let alone released.
When asked to please jot down what influenced this new
album and sound, Eric replied "glam holes, glitter dreams,
money troubles, apocalypse paranoia, one hit wonders,
manifest destiny, my family's westward migration, body
troubles (was passing kidney stones almost the entire
time), LGBT disco parties, Jonathan Richman, Missing
Foundation, Neil Diamond, New Orleans, poverty, getting
pushed out of another Brooklyn neighbourhood... No
Beach Boys, no Beatles, no Buddha... More Bad News
Eric Copeland has been sound clashing at full volume for
over twenty years, first carving out a named for himself as
one third of the legendary NY-via-Providence band Black
Dice. A wildly prolific solo artist, Copeland has played
shit houses, party palaces and seemingly everything in
between all over the world.
A long time Brooklyn, resident, Eric recently relocated
to where the L Train does not run - Palma de Mallorca,
Spain. While maintaining a relatively humble and low key
presence in a highly competitive musical world, he has
releases a prolific amount of music every year through
indie labels such as L.I.E.S., Escho (Iceage), PPM (No Age), Paw Tracks (Animal Collective) and DFA.1. Kids In A Coma
