Johnny Cash At San Quentin (Speakers Corner)

Johnny Cash was a country legend even during his lifetime, although, or perhaps because, he was very different from the numerous country singers with chequered shirts. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs.

At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. Fired by the success of his jailhouse recording, Columbia Records released At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frenetically applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered by Cash fans to be the best live recording by the 'man in black'.

    Musicians:

    • Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar)

    • June Carter Cash, Carter Family (voc)

    • Bob Wootton (electric guitar)

    • Marshall Grant (bass)

    • W.S. Holland (drums)

Recording: 24 February 1969 live at San Quentin State Prison, USA, by Neil Wilburn and Bob Breault

    Production: Bob Johnston

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Orange Blossom Special (Speakers Corner)

Just like the often sung-about fellow locomotives 'Midnight Special' and the 'Chattenooga Choo Choo', the 'Orange Blossom Special' finds itself bathed in the very best tradition of American long-distance trains and memorable journeys. Puffing steam trains symbolise an atmosphere of departure, endurance and the mechanical pulse beat of profit-oriented industrialisation, while also conjuring up the spirit of down-and-outs who tramp from one end of the country to the other along the railtracks, dodging train fares.

Almost guilelessly at first, the album number 20 forged ahead into the hearts and hips of Cash fans with old favourites and climbed to number three in the Country charts. If you listen carefully, you will notice that three top Bob Dylan songs have crept in - It Ain't Me Babe, Mama, You've Been On My Mind and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. Dylan, who in his early years was far from enjoying cult status and was condemned a godless troublemaker, communist and traitor to folk music, found a perspicacious patron in Cash. In no uncertain terms, Cash demanded that Dylan's critics should »Shut up! ... and let him sing!« and even sang Dylan himself. This present LP is not merely a perfectly produced Country album by the Man In Black, but a traction engine for the work of his spiritual brother.

    Now Here's Johnny Cash

For what would be his 10th album release, Sun continued to mine its deep reservoir of Cash recordings for Now Here's Johnny Cash. Inaugural single "Hey Porter" makes its first LP appearance and signals a recurring theme for Cash's songs, trains and the American railroad system. It also contains a cover of Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," which hit #13 on the Country Singles Chart and #93 on the Pop Singles Chart. Though well into his Columbia career at this point, Sam Phillips and Sun continued to be a major part of Cash's success.

Johnny Cash's first album on Columbia is also regarded as his best from his late fifties period. After he was released from his Sun Records contract, Cash unleashed his best material for The Fabulous Johnny Cash (1958). Maintaining his stripped-down, bare bones Country Blues style the album is simply all killer, no filler Classic Cash. Great songs like Frankie's Man, Johnny, Don't Take Your Guns To Town and I Still Miss Someone proved to be staples in Cash's extensive body of work. Finally available on 180 gram vinyl!

    Johnny Cash at San Quentin

Perhaps even more so than its predecessor, Johnny Cash at San Quentin captures Cash at his most raw and uninhibited. The artists raucous rapport with his captive audience is obvious on an inspired mix of Cash classics (I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues), jailhouse ballads (Starkville City Jail, San Quentin), traditional tunes (Wreck of the Old 97, Therell Be Peace in the Valley) and well-chosen covers (Bob Dylans Wanted Man, the Lovin Spoonfuls Darling Companion). The albums most popular track, though, remains the Shel Silverstein-penned novelty number A Boy Named Sue, which became the biggest hit single of Cashs career.

Johnny Cashs five-decade musical career was loaded with bigger-than-life landmark moments. None were more memorable than the Man in Blacks historic concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin State Prison, and the beloved albums that documented those shows. Cashs passion for prison reform and rehabilitation inspired him to perform a series of concerts for inmate audiences, and two of these unique events were documented on Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. These albums, originally released in 1968 and 1969 respectively, remain among Cashs best-selling and best-loved recordings. At the time of their original release, they revitalized his career, and played a crucial role in his crossover from the country music world to the mainstream pop charts.

    Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams

Originally released June 15, 1960, Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams is not quite an accurate title. Only four of the album's twelve tracks are Hank Williams' songs with all but one of the remaining tracks composed by Cash. Whatever the title, this is a fantastic collection of early tracks from Sun, including "Straight A's in Love," "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues." Also included is the lean rocker "Mean Eyed Cat," featuring hot rockabilly licks from Luther Perkins. A thrilling platter from start to finish!

From the minute he walked into Sun Studios, Johnny Cash began a career that would see him become one of the biggest and most influential musicians of our time. Though only on Sun from 1955-58, Johnny made some of his most legendary recordings there. When he moved on to Columbia Records, Johnny left behind a large cache of material which Sun happily compiled and released on LPs throughout the 60's, mixing Cash's singles-sides with previously unissued recordings. The resulting platters were a goldmine for fans eager to hear more from country's newest superstar. Johnny Cash Greatest Hits Volume 1

    First Time on Audiophile Vinyl

Gatefold Cover presentation of his classic 1967 multi-platinum Greatest Hits LP!!!

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the original Columbia Records tapes

    Manufactured at R.T.I.

Johnny Cash was born during the great depression into a poor family in Arkansas. At a very young age he worked on the family farm
and experienced many of life's struggles. This is also the time he would develop his love for music, family and the Bible, which followed him
closely throughout his long career. In the early fifties after spending time in the Air Force, he moved to Memphis, became friends with folks
like Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and ultimately cut some sides at Sun Studios which became the catalyst
that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar, troubadour and humanitarian unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at Columbia Records knew that this young fellow named Johnny Cash was destined for superstardom. They quickly signed
the legend to a long term deal, and his first Columbia singles like his prolific Don't Take Your Guns to Town forever etched "The Man In Black"
    trademark to his name.

In 1967 after many chart topping country and pop albums and a bevy of hit singles and Grammy Awards, more fame followed as the
brass at Columbia Records honored their journeyman Johnny Cash with his first hits collection, the multi-platinum Johnny Cash's Greatest
    Hits Volume 1.

The album was a blockbuster as it topped the charts, making this a crossover hit with both country and pop audiences, proving once again that his career was of historic merit.
Filled with more hits than a roadside jukebox, the amazing album takes off with the classic duet with wife June Carter Cash and
Grammy Award winner Jackson. This chart topping single is followed up by one of his most famous songs the number one I Walk the Line.

More treasures follow with the country belter Understand Your Man and Cash's own hit interpretation of Orange Blossom Special, which truly
made the album a treasure trove of hits.
More greatest hits follow as the LP features a nice helping of solid smashes like Ring of Fire, Five Feet High and Rising, the aforementioned Don't Take Your Guns to Town, and probably one of the first Bob Dylan covers ever with his haunting It Ain't Me Babe. In total, the
album showcases eleven important Johnny Cash recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics for all time.

The Essential Johnny Cash (Awaiting Repress)

It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-LP, collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, The Essential Johnny Cash does present a series of satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism.

    FROM ONE LEGEND TO ANOTHER...

Contains many undubbed, raw, in-the-studio versions of Hank-penned classics and Cash-performed Milestones!

    ORIGINAL SUN MASTERS

Released June 15, 1960, Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams is not quite an accurate title. Only four of the album's twelve tracks are Hank Williams' songs with all but one of the remaining tracks composed by Cash. Whatever the title, this is a fantastic collection of early tracks from Sun, including ''Straight A's in Love,'' ''I Walk the Line'' and ''Folsom Prison Blues.'' Also included is the lean rocker ''Mean Eyed Cat,'' featuring hot rockabilly licks from Luther Perkins.

From the original Sun masters, featuring many raw, in-the-studio sides (sans overdubs) - the Man in Black has never sounded better!

The Fabulous Johnny Cash was the third album by country singer Johnny Cash. Originally released in 1959 by Columbia, soon after his departure from Sun Records.

When Johnny Cash comes on the radio, no one changes the station. It's a voice, a name with a soul that cuts across all boundaries and it's a voice we all believe. Yours is a voice that speaks for the saints and the sinners - It's like branch water for the soul. Long may you sing out. Loud. - Tom Waits

Think You've Seen It All by Johnny Cash? Think You've Heard It All by Johnny Cash? Think Again!

An innovative artist like Johnny Cash deserves an innovative package. Here, striking unpublished images from early in Cash's career are packaged with a one-sided LP of Cash on-stage in 1957 and 1959. The flipside of this limited edition LP features a portrait of the music legend engraved into the LP's audiophile-grade 180g vinyl.

Presented in a 16-page hardcover book, Unseen Cash from William Speer's Studio is a true collector's item complete with extraordinary photos and 12-tracks of rarely heard audio! Released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Johnny Cash's birth!

In 1955, at the dawn of his long career, Sun Records president Sam Phillips sent Johnny Cash to a nearby photographer, William Speer. Cash was fortunate because Speer was an innovative craftsman, influenced by vintage Hollywood photographers who used light in a dramatic new way. Speer shot photo sessions with Cash, between 1955 and 1958. A couple of the images were published in the 1950s, but the rest were stored away until now!

    Johnny99

Although it went virtually unnoticed upon its initial release in 1983, this intriguing record momentarily put a halt to Johnny Cash's precipitous artistic decline and kept the promise of his resurgence alive. Recorded in Los Angeles with session men including Marty Stuart, Norton Buffalo, Jo-El Sonnier, and producer Brian Ahern, Johnny 99 focuses on the work of younger songwriters--Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kennerley, Guy Clark--and might be the lone oasis in an otherwise barren decade. The solemn opener, Springsteen's Highway Patrolman, sets the tone as Cash turns a very restrained reading into an emotional powerhouse, supported by Hoyt Axton's baritone growl. The Springsteen-penned title track becomes a honky-tonk anthem as Cash delivers the Boss's lyrics with acute understanding. The touching Civil War ballad God Bless Robert E. Lee, the tropical/topical Joshua Gone Barbados, and the attractive duet with June Carter on Kennerley's Brand New Dance help round out a rather diverse (for Cash) collection. Aside from the occasional guitar effect and unnecessary keyboard intrusion (it was 1983 after all), this set marks a high point of a low period.

Rough Cut King Of Country Music

Although Johnny Cash recorded for many labels over the course of a career lasting nearly half a century, Sun Records, Johnny's first label, was the one that made him a star. His first #1 hit came in 1956 with "I Walk The Line," followed by "There You Go" later that same year. This LP is a selection of material Cash recorded for Sun during those early hit making years. Including "The Ways Of A Woman In Love," a hit Cash took to #2 in 1958, and his version of "I Forgot To Remember To Forget," the song that made label mate Elvis Presley famous in 1955. 180g vinyl pressing with bonus CD.
