    Scarecrow

A pop sensation in the 1980s, singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has evolved into one of rock's most enduring acts, and given voice to the small-town experience.

Scarecrow is the eighth album by John Mellencamp. Originally released in September 1985, it peaked at #2 on the U.S. chart behind Heart's comeback album, Heart.

This album contained three Top 10 hits, a record for a Mellencamp album: R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., which peaked at #2 in the U.S.; Lonely Ol' Night, which peaked at #6; and Small Town, which also peaked at #6. Lonely Ol' Night also peaked at #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, his second chart-topping single on this chart.

In 1989, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Scarecrow #95 on its list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s, saying: Scarecrow consolidated the band's rugged, roots-rock thrash and the ongoing maturation of Mellencamp's lyrics.

    Sad Clowns & Hillbillies

Heartland rocker John Mellencamp will release his 23rd full-length album, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies featuring Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, on Republic Records. Sad Clowns & Hillbillies returns Mellencamp to the musical eclecticism that is, itself, a reflection of his wide-ranging musings on life. John Mellencamp is an authentic voice of American music and master storyteller with a commitment to creating traditional rock & roll, bittersweet songs of happiness and melancholia, and fervent political dissent. Plain Spoken

John Cougar Mellencamp is an American rock singer-songwriter and musician. Mellencamp rose to superstardom in the 1980s while honing an almost
startingly plainspoken writing style that, starting in 1982, yielded a strong of Top 10 singles, including Hurts So Good, Jack & Diane, Crumblin'
Down, Pink Houses, Lonely Ol' Night, Small Town, R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Paper in Fire, and Cherry Bomb.

To date, John has released 21 studio albums. He has released 10 albums that have all been certified platinum or multi-platinum in the United States, and
Mellencampe has sold over 40illion albums worldwide throughout his career.

A Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, John Mellencampe recently signed a historic 'Lifetime' deal with Republic Records. Known as
The Voice of the Heartland, Mellencamp has touched the hearts and souls of music listeners and influenced American culture with enduring songs. His
22nd full-length album, Plain Spoken, is a stunningly elegant and soul-searching gem.

Produced by T Bone Burnett, Mellencamp continues to evolve artistically with Plain Spoken -- the first new music from the artist since 2010's critically
acclaimed No Better Than This, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 and received the honor of being on Rolling Stone's Best Albums of
2010 list. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has created an important body of work that has earned him both critical respect and an enormous audience.
An authoritative and eloquent storytellter who speaks to the sensibilities of the nation, Mellencamp is also one of the most successful live concert
performers in the world. A man with a conscience, he used his visibility and influence to advocate an issue that hit close to home and became one of the
founding members of Farm Aid, an organization that began in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farm. The Farm Aid concerts have raised
over $45 million to promote a resilient family farm system of agriculture.

    Heaven & Hull

Available On Vinyl For The First Time

Heaven And Hull was the final solo album by David Bowie alumnus and Rock guitarist Mick Ronson, released in 1994, following Ronson's death the previous year. The album features collaborations by long time friends of Ronson including David Bowie, Joe Elliott, and Ian Hunter. Other artists on this first-ever LP include Peter Noone, Martin Chambers and Chrissie Hynde, Phil Collen and John Mellencamp.

The All The Young Dudes track on Heaven And Hull is from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, where Ronson himself was suffering from cancer. On screen, he appears very thin, while still playing blistering guitar. It proved to be his last concert.

Sham Morris, one of the album's producers: During the making of Heaven And Hull, (working title To Hull And Back) I asked Mick to visualize a characteristic from his home town of Hull. His first thought was the Humber Bridge. The Bridge became very symbolic for those of us working on the album and it was his wish to incorporate it in the artwork. Mick has crossed the Bridge now and left us this swan song.

    A Permeable Life

Singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer is releasing her twelfth
studio recording this spring, A Permeable Life, produced and
engineered by Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Over the
Rhine, Willy Nelson, Lily & Madeleine). Newcomer is simultaneously
releasing a companion book, A Permeable Life: Poems and
Essays. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with
her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet
spiritual view of the world. As in the work of poets Mary
Oliver and Wendell Berry, Newcomer's songs are based in
the ordinary, and infused with images from the natural world.

"A Permeable Life is about what presses out from the heart,
what comes in at a slant and what shimmers below the
surface of things," Newcomer says. "To live permeably is to
be open-hearted and audacious, to risk showing up as our
truest self, and embracing a willingness to be astonished."

On this album, Newcomer's signature deep voice-which the Austin American-Statesman called "as rich
as Godiva chocolate"-takes on a quiet conversational tone, close and intimate. Open and elegant arrangements
showcase lyrics that balance introspection and interior monologue with love and fascination for the shared
human story. The concept of this album was creating a musical framework as intimate and elegant as the songs
themselves. Each individual part have clarity and beauty, tting perfectly together like the gears of a ne clock,
and yet uid and never ridged or contained but remaining open and seemingly effortless. Newcomer states, "We
wanted this album to be very intimate. We wanted the listener to feel very close as if in conversation with me.
The vocals on this album were sung as if I were sitting at the kitchen table with the listener."

In "Every Little Bit of It," Newcomer delights in the small experiences that give our life meaning, and the
importance of embracing these moments while we can "drain the glass drink it down, every moment of this,
every little bit of it." In "A Light in the Window," she reects on the feeling of seeing a light in the window at a
distance. We don't know what the next threshold will bring, and yet there is always a whisper, a light in the
distance giving us hope and encouragement. In "Writing You a Letter," Newcomer describes the process of
traveling with an open heart, and how it will inevitably change us: "Every place I go leaves it's own tattoo." But
she also knows that we make impressions when we leave: "That's how it is laying stone on stone, building little
altars by the side of the road." "The Ten O'clock Line" and "Abide" (co-written with author Parker J. Palmer),
explore themes of loss and new thresholds, musing on the possibility that what may look like a hole in one's
life, may be only a space. In "Visitation," Newcomer describes the experience of how memories do not arrive in
a linear fashion, but wash over us throughout the day. In the haunting "Thank You Good Night" she describes
the evolution of a prayer of gratitude. "A Room at the Table" is an anthem for a new diverse world where she
writes "This is how it all begins, let us sing the new world in," calling us to allow this troubled world to
transform us and move us to action. In "An Empty Chair" she explores one woman's story in the wake of
unexpected gun violence. And "Forever Ray" and "Don't Put Me On Hold" reect Newcomer's mischievous
    humor.

    Between The Ditches

Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills comes Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band playing a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone. Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire, this trio is a force to be reckoned with. Their new album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle. Their fifth album celebrates the growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for their country home and the importance of family.

The uncanny ability to breathe new life into old forms of music gives the Big Damn Band a pedigree many Americana acts would kill for and an ironclad work ethic keeps them on the road playing for the people with hurricane force. Locked in with an audience, the band create their own community and welcome the crowd into it, transporting them away from their troubles to joyous release, the way great musicians have done for centuries. The Rev. J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and distant cousin Aaron "Cuz" Persinger are a living breathing embodiment of the traditions and hard work ethic native to their Brown County, Indiana home.

With a reputation for their incendiary live shows well established, The Big Damn Band set out to make the album that would finally capture the same heat. Recorded at White Arc Studio in Bloomington, Indiana, the album was produced by The Rev. Peyton and Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop) and mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Dr. John, Shins). For previous albums, the band had recorded live, straight through in the same mode as a live show. Between The Ditches came together more slowly, with care. "We approached it saying we were going to make a record this time, not just a recording," explained the Rev. He used a different guitar set up on almost every track, employing two '30s National guitars, a cigar box guitar, a custom shop Gibson flattop 1929 L2 and an Airline map electric guitar. The primary amps are custom Weber amps made by Weber speakers, both are one of a kind.

Between The Ditches features a new level of craftsmanship in both recording technique and songwriting. The guitar playing alone should put the Rev. in the same class with his much revered idols. The songwriting boasts an added maturity and runs the gamut in subject matter from the barn burning, tongue in cheek, "Shut the Screen," (where "It's too dang hot and the bugs are too dang mean") to the evils of strip mining, an issue close to the hearts of this Indiana band in, "Don't Grind It Down." There seems to be a theme expressed throughout the album and stated clearly in their first single "Devils Look Like Angels": "Devil don't live down in hell, the devil's right here doing very well."

Love Will Tear Us Apart should have been the band's most shining moment, instead it became their tragic swan song. Released just a month after frontman Ian Curtis' heart-wrenching suicide, the song came to be seen as the unheeded warning of the impending tragedy. This special edition features all three versions of the song that transformed Joy Division from mere band into legend. In addition to the original single version, we have two versions remixed by American producers Don Gehman of John Mellencamp fame (the 'radio version') and Arthur Baker (who also produced a hit single for Africa Bambaataa around this same time). The remaining tracks include These Days (which appeared on the original Love Will Tear Us Apart single), along with Transmission (their debut single released in 1979) and Atmosphere (originally released as a France-only single) in 1980.

By The Light Of The Moon

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180g LP brings these 11 songs to life and out of the clouded, foggy sonic environment in which they've remained for more than two decades. For the first time, T Bone Burnett's stripped-back production functions as it should. Namely, Los Lobos sound as if they're playing at a small, sweaty neighborhood joint late on a Sunday night for an audience of locals, friends, and family.

The group's uncanny ability to switch between instruments and effortlessly play each as if it's their innate right-listen to the seamless fashion in which electric and acoustic guitars, marimbas, organs, saxophones, harmonicas, and percussion create strikingly memorable soundscapes-comes to light amidst a warmer, airier, more organic and deep-black background.David Hidalgo's sweet, honeysuckle timbre, he and Cesar Rosas' overlapping tremolo guitars, and stacks of interwoven rhythms jump with vibrant electricity.

Shifting into storytelling mode, Los Lobos use By the Light of the Moon as an opportunity to meditate on everyday America and channel the fate of normal communities. Issues of faith, mortality, love, disillusionment, and melancholy inform narratives that are on the same socially conscious level as those of period-era Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. As for the songs, they crackle, waltz, shuffle, dance, tremble, and kick. The band almost dares listeners not to care.

Whether leaning into twangy two-step country-rock ("One Night In America"), dual-guitar shootout rockabilly ("Shakin' Shakin' Shakes"), swinging jump R&B ("Is This All There Is?"), tequila-spiked East Los Angeles-style rock ("Set Me Free (Rosa Lee)"), searing Latin-tinged blues ("My Baby's Gone"), or poignant gospel-lined folk ("River of Fools"), Los Lobos' Tex-Mex gumbo continually impresses and delights.

Don't pass up one of the best releases of the 1980s and one of Los Lobos' definitive statements. You'll never hear a better pressing. Boleros, rancheros, and more await!

    Lily & Madeleine

Like truth, beauty resides in simplicity. When it manifests itself, it doesn't require elaborate arguments or proofs; you can't debate someone into apprehending it. It's apparent and all it requires is appreciation, or perhaps even love. Such are the songs of Lily & Madeleine. Understandably, when their debut EP, The Weight of the Globe, came out earlier this year, much was made of the fact that Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz are teenagers: Madeleine is eighteen and her sister is sixteen. Surely, that's important given the impressive talent on display.

Of the music, American Songwriter asserts, "Their voices can pierce through the chaos of everyday life and actually make you stop what you're doing, if only for a second, and truly listen," while TeenVogue.com praises, "Sister duo Lily and Madeleine almost sound too good to be true-on paper and on our speakers-because they're so young, so stylish, and so talented." Additionally, in June, Vogue.com premiered the music video for the song "Back To the River" proclaiming, "This isn't the first time we've become enrapt with two sisters harmonizing, but it's a bell we never tire of hearing ring."

Produced by Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, The Fray), the 11-track album was recorded in Bloomington, IN and was written by the sisters and longtime collaborator Kenny Childers (Gentleman Caller). Of the project, Madeleine comments, "The new album reflects on our experiences as we grow as artists; looking both back to the places we've visited growing up for inspiration, and looking forward to our hopes for the future. This project really feels like our own, and we're so grateful to those who helped us create it." - Direct Current

    Anchors (Pre-Order) (On Sale)

Featuring Special Guest Sheryl Crow On Little Bit Of Rust

"I hit a wall," says Will Hoge. "I was doing the best touring of my career and I had a great, steady gig writing songs, but I was falling out of love with being in a band. I had to figure out what was next."

For Hoge, what came next was a quest to reclaim the joy and the magic that had drawn him to music in the first place. He let his band go and hit the road for roughly a year of solo shows, crisscrossing the country by himself with just a guitar and a keyboard. He felt rejuvenated by the freedom and began writing material that reenergized him, that made him feel like a kid falling in love with rock and roll all over again. Those songs ignited a dormant flame somewhere deep within his soul, and now they form the bulk of Anchors, his strongest and most nuanced album to date.

Recorded with an all-star band comprised of drummer Jerry Roe (Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Darius Rucker), bassist Dominic Davis (Jack White, Wanda Jackson), and guitarists Brad Rice (Son Volt, Ryan Adams) and Thom Donovan (Lapush, Ruby Amanfu), the album is a prime showcase for Hoge's soaring, gritty vocals, as well as his remarkable gift for crafting complex characters with real emotional depth and plainspoken profundity. Over the course of eleven tracks (including one with special guest Sheryl Crow), Hoge weaves elements of vintage country, literate folk, and heartland rock into a passionate, genre-busting masterpiece, one that offers an unflinching portrait of the messy challenges of adulthood and the ways in which we persevere (or don't) through hard times.

Beginning with the release of his acclaimed 2001 debut, Carousel, Hoge established himself as a masterful songwriter and performer as well as a critical favorite, with Rolling Stone comparing him to Bob Seger and John Mellencamp and NPR praising his "sharp, smart, passionate rock 'n' roll that seems to exist out of time." He built up a loyal fanbase the old fashioned way, maintaining a steady studio output and a relentless touring schedule of more than 200 shows a year, including bills with the likes of My Morning Jacket, the Black Crowes, and Drive-By Truckers, in addition to festival slots from Bonnaroo to Austin City Limits. In 2012, the Eli Young Band hit #1 on the Billboard Country chart with their Platinum-selling recording of Hoge's song "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," earning Hoge nominations for CMA, ACM, and GRAMMY Awards. Soon he was performing everywhere from the Grand Ole Opry to The Late Show with David Letterman, his music was soundtracking a high-profile Chevy truck campaign, and he'd signed a major publishing deal.

When the inspiration ran dry, though, Hoge took a gamble on himself and walked away from it all in order to pursue the kind of art that truly moved him, to make something that mattered. If Anchors is any indication, it was a safe bet indeed.

Alive At Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary

Until it closed in 2009, Tennessee's Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was one of the most notorious penal institutions in America. Located in mountainous Petros, it was a forbidding rockpile hewn out of the rough countryside by its own inmates in 1896.

On Oct. 17, 2001, Mark Collie came to Brushy Mountain with a sheaf of newly written songs about crime and punishment and an all-star band for a pair of performances that were recorded for a live album release. Mostly, though, Collie showed up at Brushy Mountain with a mission.

God gave me the opportunity to get in there and share something that might make a difference, he says. I believed the songs could matter. I wanted to make something that people could find hope in, or redemption, or restoration, or forgiveness.

His close friendship with country icon Johnny Cash supplied the principal inspiration for his own prison recording. Collie was well aware of Cash's celebrated 1968-69 live albums recorded at California's Folsom and San Quentin penitentiaries. He also knew the impact that a 1959 performance at the latter facility had on Inmate #A-45200, better known as the legendary country star Merle Haggard. Without Johnny going to San Quentin, Collie says, there might not have been a Merle Haggard. A lot of lives were changed or made better as a result of that music. Collie began writing his own cycle of prison songs.

A top-flight crew of musicians was assembled, including guitarist Dave Grissom (John Mellencamp, Joe Ely), keyboardist Mike Utley (Jimmy Buffett, the Dixie Flyers), guitarist-mandolinist Tommy Burroughs (Memphis Riverbluff Clan), Collie's longtime accordionist Hassel Tekkle, bassist Willie Weeks (the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, B.B. King), drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler), and guitarist-fiddler-vocalist and solo star Shawn Camp. Austin-based critics darling Kelly Willis, who takes lead vocals on two tracks, also supplied backup vocals on several numbers; the late Texas blues giant Clarence Gatemouth Brown is the album's other special guest.

Alive at Brushy Mountain embraces a breadth of American styles - country, blues, gospel, bluegrass, and rock n roll. It largely comprises striking original material, which contemplates the convict's lot with compassion, keen detail, and sometimes boisterous humor.

Cory Branan is a natural-born storyteller. As with any of his musical and literary pedestal sitters, from John Prine and Leonard Cohen to Raymond Carver and Gabriel García Márquez, his seemingly conversational, painstakingly crafted anecdotes benefit from a hard-eyed stare at hydra-headed experience.

Mutt, Branan's Bloodshot debut, also bears the marks of his "American gumbo" heritage: a winding path from nascent guitar shredder in the small, state-line town of Southaven, Mississippi, to fledgling troubadour in Memphis' lauded underground music scene, and now a Nashville-based itinerant road warrior thrilling Thunderdomes as varied as Warp's Country Throwdown and Chuck Ragan's Revival Tour.

While his music tips its hat to road-map influences from Motown to Mellencamp, the Delta bluesmen to folk pickers of '60s Greenwich Village, the united result is a singular sound spurred on by years spent on tour honing something rare that is altogether its own.

    Thom Chacon (Out Of Stock)

Thom Chacon could well be the subject for one of his own evocative songs. On his self-titled sophomore album on the Pie label, the Durango, CO, singer-songwriter takes on the "American Dream" in no uncertain terms. Recorded at producer Perry Margouleff's famed Pie Studios in Glen Cove, N.Y., with Bob Dylan's rhythm section of drummer George Receli and bassist Tony Garnier, Thom Chacon offers a series of compelling narratives that focus on the forgotten members of society.

Singer/songwriter Thom Chacon delivers hardscrapple tales in a voice well-suited to the task that will immediately remind you of what's his name? Maybe John Prine, or John Mellencamp, or Steve Earle or Bruce or Guy Clark or?

But after a spell you'll just hear Chacon. His storytelling is as direct as his vocals. His melodies are serviceable and well-drawn, but not yet instantly memorable. It took a few plays to hear past the obvious influences but after that, this album makes for a consistently entertaining spin.

If you're looking for allegory look elsewhere because Chacon's words are to be taken literally. His stories are of the wrongly convicted, the hunted illegal, the wanted, the indebted living the American Dream worth more dead cause baby I owe, the hooked on alcohol (etc.). If you're looking for happy tunes, you've come to the wrong place, not that Chacon's characters complain. They are mostly defiant, heroic and stoic.

The action mostly takes place on the Southwestern American border and the parched-throated Chacon sounds as if he's not had water in days. He's playing guitar and harmonica recorded live in the studio and backed by, among others, Dylan's rhythm section of drummer George Recile and bassist Tony Garnier who keep the proceedings moving smoothly, yet turbulently throughout.

The live-in-the-studio production by Perry Margouleff engineered by William Wittman at Margouleff's Pie Studio was recorded and mixed in our favored analog domain and mastered that way by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound so can you guess how this LP pressed at Quality Record Pressings sounds?

I'll put it to you this way: if Ain't Gonna Take Us Alive, with its 12 string electric doesn't deliver the chills on your stereo, your stereo needs work.

The sound is immediate, unprocessed, three-dimensional and as deep and honest as Chacon's songwriting and singing. The dynamics and instrumental textures are as good as you will hear on a record-or live for that matter. The bass line erupts in a way you may have thought was extinct on modern recordings. Why can't everything sound this good?
