    PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone

Light years away from his contributions to the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a guitar slinger from the school of Hendrix, Frusciante's solo albums have been visceral, howling affairs dealing with raw nerves and dark places in the human spirit. Now with both PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone, his music becomes an unfiltered mesh of every conceivable style, sometimes to the point of incoherence. Recorded throughout 2011, the album was the result of Frusciante's dream to create electronic music, but seems like more of a synthesis of a multitude of different directions, sometimes branching out in all of these directions at once.

There's no easy explanation for these sounds, no context for a lot of the choices he makes with the rapid-fire style changes and jarring production choices that come one after another after another on almost every song here. Instead of sounding indulgent, or even busy, the field of sound Frusciante creates sounds strangely uniform in its complete insanity. Much like the schizophrenic landscape of a record like Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone creates a language of its own out of the chaos, and by the end, we have a few hints at what kind of deeper message lies beneath the confusion. This 180 gram double LP comes with a download card.

    One Hot Minute

Following-up the band's 1991 masterpiece Blood Sugar Sex Magik and featuring Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro in place of the recently departed John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers 1995 album One Hot Minute distinguishes itself immediately from the band's previous and future releases with a more heavy metal guitar dynamic and glimpses of psychedelic rock. Band turmoil and resurfacing drug problems also led to darker lyrical themes as heard on popular singles Warped, My Friends and Aeroplane. Although this incarnation of the band would be short lived, their collective output here doesn't lack in ambition and One Hot Minute finds the band maturing on many musical levels.

    No Rest For Ghosts

On their second full-length for Jagjaguwar, Minus Story's heavenly racket shuffles, flutters, crashes, and bangs. Their reedy artistic voice nears multi-octave range. They're influenced musically by the solo work of John Frusciante, the tenderness of Bjork, the melodic interplay of Television, and the directness of late period Tom Waits. They're influenced conceptually by the brutality of Jerzy Kosinski's The Painted Bird, the ambivalent authoritarianism critique of Jason Lips (the provider of the cartoon drawings for the album art), and most of all by the idea of the invisible enemy and the erosion of the soul by unknown outside forces.

    Californication

Ranked 399/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Californication is the seventh studio album by great American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It was released on June 8, 1999, on Warner Bros. Records and was produced by the much admired Rick Rubin.

Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik; to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist. Frusciante's return was credited with changing the band's sound altogether, producing a notable shift in style from the music recorded with Navarro.

The album's subject material incorporated various sexual innuendos commonly associated with the band, but also contained more varied themes than previous albums, including lust, death, contemplations of suicide, California, drugs, globalization, and travel.

Californication is the Chili Peppers' most commercially successful studio release, with over 16 million copies sold worldwide, and more than 5 million in the United States alone. As of 2002, the album had sold over 4 million copies in Europe.

The record produced several hits for the band, including Otherside, Californication and the Grammy Award-winning Scar Tissue. Californication peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200. The record marked a significant change in style for the band, displaying a decidedly more spiritual rock n roll side.

    The Fool

Warpaint, the all-girl quartet from Los Angeles, weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like theyre channelling something truly otherworldly, mystical. The Fool is their utterly mesmeric debut full-length album on Rough Trade Records and follows-up 2009s Exquisite Corpse EP.

The Fool was produced and mixed by Tom Biller (Liars, Jon Brion, Sean Lennon) in Los Angeles, with further mixes from Andrew Weatherall (Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream) and Adam Samuels (John Frusciante, Daniel Lanois). Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums).

One of the years most promising new acts, Warpaint construct mysterious songs that pair the rhythmic chug of Pylon with the otherworldly eeriness of Throwing Muses. - Rolling Stone

    Mother's Milk

1989's Mother's Milk is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier, founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. A cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground and a tribute to Slovak, Knock Me Down, were both big MTV successes, as were such other highlights as Taste the Pain (featured prominently in the movie Say Anything), Good Time Boys, Subway to Venus, Magic Johnson and Sexy Mexican Maid.

PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone (Out Of Stock)

As one of the world's most respected guitarists in one of rock's most commercially successful bands, John Frusciante seemingly had it all figured out. So when the famed alternative guitar guru opted out of his second stint as a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2009, many racked their brains for an explanation. But listening to PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone, it's clear that Frusciante had an itch that the Peppers couldn't scratch. A record as sprawling, layered, and flat-out bizarre as its title would suggest, reveling instead in an eclectic mix of electronica, funk, free jazz, and krautrock.

The record's break from the Peppers' funk rock formula shouldn't come as a complete surprise to those familiar with Frusciante's past solo efforts, which have always been hard to categorize. Some, like 2004s Ian MacKaye-produced DC EP, keep things on a straight and narrow pop rock path, while others, like 2001s To Record Only Water For Ten Days, are more enigmatic. But even with that caveat, PBX is Frusciante's most challenging and niche effort to date. "Bike", with its Buddy Rich-on-crank drum intro and skittering Pro Tools backbeat, sounds like a sonic freak-out from the year 2036, whereas "Ratisug" works its way back toward center while preserving the record's heavy electronic lean.

The LP is anything but even-keeled, and the music constantly changes course, often within the same song. But with repeated listens, that quickly becomes part of its zonked-out charm. PBX is a record strung out on big, sometimes half-baked ideas and lots of lofty ambition, and fortunately Frusciante has accrued enough good will for listeners to let him off the leash some. It hits (it's hard to listen to the beginning of "Mistakes" without thinking of that A-Ha video from 1987) and it misses ("Uprane?" Good God, what's happening?), but still it keeps the air underneath its wings. If Frusciante had to bail on his Peppers gig to find inspiration, at least the result tickles the eardrums in some unexpected ways.
