    The Westerner

John Doe's The Westerner will be released via Cool Rock Records/Thirty Tigers. Throughout his career, Doe has garnered worldwide acclaim: NPR Music describes his work as "one of the warmest, most welcome voices in pop music. There's a beseeching quality to his singing that draws you in with curiosity," while American Songwriter praises, " a winning platter of '60s inspired rock with a singer-songwriter twist." Doe calls The Westerner his "psychedelic soul record from the Arizona desert."

The album features ten new tracks from Doe with guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West and Tom Brosseau. The Westerner was produced by Howe Gelb (Neko Case, M. Ward), Dave Way(Fiona Apple) and Doe. The album's artwork was designed by Shepard Fairey and Aaron Huey to support Native American rights via a campaign called Protect The Sacred, with additional photography by Jim Herrington.

    Country Club (Awaiting Repress)

In true honky tonk style Country Club is the bastard child of a drunken promise. A post show hang-out between X and the Knitters' John Doe and The Sadies produced the idea to join forces to make an album of country songs. Timeless sounds abound on Country Club driven by Does gorgeously rough-hewn vocals, the dueling thousand pound chops of the guitar-wielding Good brothers and The Sadies world class rhythm section of Mike Belitsky and Sean Dean. Classic tunes by Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings stand along side corkers by Tammy Wynette and Roger Miller, all of them getting unique treatments by Doe and The Sadies. The album also features four originals; three from The Sadies and one courtesy of the timeless pairing of John Doe and Exene Cervenka. On Country Club John Doe and The Sadies find the perfect blend of the reverent and the experimental resulting in a slightly psychedelic brew that just might pass for straight if you're not lookin'.

The Best Of John Doe: This Far

John Doe is much more likely to look ahead to what's next, rather than fixate on the past -- even a past as storied and influential as his own. Part scrapbook, part roadmap, The Best of John Doe: This Far -- available May 20, 2014 via Yep Roc -- guides listeners through Doe's solo catalog. Compiled by Doe himself, the generous track listing (24 songs on download and double vinyl, 21 on CD) encompasses nearly a quarter century, highlighting songs from from nine records on six different labels. Sequenced non-chronologically, The Best of John Doe: This Far was compiled with four vinyl sides in mind. There was no formula: These are simply Doe's favorite moments, including in concert staples, pivotal collaborations, personal milestones, and even a pair of unreleased reexaminations of songs from his past.

    A Year In The Wilderness

    First Time On Vinyl

For his 2007 release, A Year in the Wilderness John invited his friends and frequent conspirators to help him interpret songs that came fast and hard. Doe dubbed the Wilderness sessions, A scary and wondrous process where a blast of intuition and force that takes only moments to realize, but that can last forever and carry consequences you never imagined. Guest stars appearing on A Year in the Wilderness include Dave Alvin, Jill Sobule, Kathleen Edwards, Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Greg Leisz and Aimee Mann. This is the first time A Year in the Wilderness has been made available on vinyl.

    Keeper

John Doe is one of modern music's most authentic and enduring songwriters. A keystone of the legendary LA punk rock band X, the Chicago Tribune called him, punk rock's golden throat. While touring with X over the last 30 years, Doe also cultivated his own career as a solo artist, diving head-first into alt-country, folk and gut-wrenching rock 'n' roll.

His latest record is Keeper, the glass-half-full counterpart to 2007's emotionally damaged A Year in the Wilderness. Keeper was recorded over six months with hit-making producer/mixer Dave Way and features performances from legends and friends alike. Patty Griffin, Don Was, Smokey Hormel and Steve Berlin take star turns along with great performances from Cindy Wasserman and Jill Sobule.

Doe says of the process, Pieces of sadness exists in everything but it doesn't have to be the only thing. I finally figured out how to write a love song where the people actually get loved. This is a record by a veteran artist who has come back from the brink with his arms full of fast and beautiful songs.

Selection Of Songs, Includes She Said The Same Things To Me, Memphis In The Meantime, Have A Little Faith In Me, Dust Down A Country Road And Many More

John Hiatt, who the Los Angeles Times calls one of rock's most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years, has built a steady body of work, which more than earns to be captured on this Collected album.

Hiatt, a master lyricist, and satirical storyteller, weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales ranging in topics including redemption, relationships, growing older and surrendering, on his terms. His tracks are musically rooted in acoustic blues, accentuated by Hiatt's soulful, gritty voice, which mirrors the gravity of his reflective lyrics.

Many of his songs are commercially successful covered by other artists (Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, the Neville Brothers, and many more have covered Hiatt songs and gone places with them) but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a voice. He does, and while he sings fine, his real voice is in the songs themselves, which are frequently brilliant. A fine example is Have A Little Faith In Me one of his signature songs, which was sung and written by John Hiatt following his sobriety from drugs and alcohol.

This Collected 2LP captures his many highlights, think Memphis In The Meantime, Georgie Rae, and features tracks from his early days up to his critically successful days in the 80s and 90s and beyond.

    Gypsum Strings

Their second release springs from 1960's West coast legends like The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros., The Charlatans, and Moby Grape, adding elements of X, Neu, The Feelies, Mercury Rev, and Fairport Convention. Cutting through the dense arrangements are powerhouse harmonies. Rachel Cox emerges as the Blue Ridge amalgam of Sandy Denny and Linda Ronstadt while Pat Sullivan's gravelly baritone anchors it all in Johnny Cash and John Doe territory. The sextet's trademark killer songwriting chops are in evidence as Gypsum Strings boasts some beautiful ballads that temper the heaviness of other tracks. Look for them on tour in the spring.

    The Deepest Lake

The Deepest Lake finds Dengue Fever expanding their trademark psych/surf/Cambodian pop sound with African percussion, vocals that would make Exene and John Doe proud, sweeping melodies and extended psychedelic jams of songs that often time out after five or six minutes. The band made a conscious decision to head into the studio looking to expand their sound while also following their instincts to explore jams that came out of demos recorded in their home studio where the album was produced entirely by the band themselves. The result is sound that showcases their musically adventurous side while still remaining faithful to the bands otherworldly sound.

    Songs For Slim

THE SONGS FOR SLIM series was constructed in order to raise
money for former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap's medical costs,
the result of a massive right brain stroke he suffered in 2012. Fellow
Replacements members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson
reunited and recorded an original Slim Dunlap song plus three
additional covers. Original Replacements drummer Chris Mars also
recorded a Slim cover and all five tracks were combined on a limited
edition run of 250 numbered copies of 10" vinyl EPs. These EPs
were auctioned in January and raised a staggering $105,743.42.
Future auctions of split 7" singles with artists such as Steve Earle,
Lucinda Williams, Craig Finn (from The Hold Steady), Deer Tick,
Jakob Dylan, John Doe, The Jayhawks and Frank Black, all covering
Slim's songs, will commence on the 15th of each month and run for

    Locked Down

Storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) releases Locked Down, a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. The new album, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, is Dr. John's first for Nonesuch Records.

Its an entirely new approach for the iconic Dr. John, featuring as it does his collaboration with Auerbach and a band of young musicians Auerbach hand-picked to make Locked Down at his studio Easy Eye Sound in Nashville. It was way cool cutting this record with Dan and the crew he put together for it, says Rebennack. It's reel HIP.

For his part, Auerbach says about the collaboration: Mac inspired me every single day we were in the studio together: musically, spiritually, cosmically, something special seemed to be happening and everyone involved could sense it. For my money, Mac's one of the greatest who ever was and who ever will be, I'm so honored to have had this opportunity to work with him.

Auerbach, a long-time fan of the influential musician, dubbed the Night Tripper in the late 60s, visited Dr. John late in 2010 in his hometown of New Orleans, announcing his ambition to produce the best record you've made in a long time. Rebennack replied that he had done his research, his children had told him good things about The Black Keys, and the conversation led to an agreement to collaborate on the 2011 Bonnaroo Jam being curated by Auerbach.

That performance, called by New York Times critic Ben Ratliff in his best-of-the-year list deep and oozy, close-to-the-vest, low-frequency funk, confirmed that something unusual was taking place and led to September recording sessions in Nashville. Dr. John returned to Nashville at Thanksgiving to complete the vocals and Locked Down was mixed by Auerbach and completed in early 2012.

Anything can happen and often does. This is John Cage. A seminal example of indeterminate music from an icon on experimental sounds.

It could be argued that there is no more controversial figure in music history as avant-garde electronic composer John Cage. Perhaps best known for his composition 4'33, which consisted of Cage sitting at a piano for four-plus minutes of total silence, Cage was both loved and loathed in the 60s and 70s as a leading light in avant-garde music and as an entertainingly weird guy who used radios, televisions, live dancers and his own Adam's apple as instruments in his live performances. Cage's music blurred the line between music, performance art and visual art in a way that no other composer has before or since.

Cage's performances were often wild one-of-a-kind happenings, and the shows that make up the recording of Variations IV are no different. The fourth in a series of concerts that stretched the boundaries of what music was, IV was designed for a group of performers playing literally anything they could get their hands on. They were also encouraged, if they got bored playing, to do other activities in addition to the music. The score consisted of two circles and seven points on a transparent sheet, to be interpreted however the performers saw fit. The end result: a wild album of music-concrete that should sound familiar to fans of the Beatles' Revolution 9 -- no question Cage's composition influenced Lennon and Ono's experiments.

Modern Harmonic brings you this gorgeous reissue of Cage's masterpiece, pressed on clear vinyl and wrapped in restored artwork that captures the unique and strange beauty of this headphone classic. Join the avant-garde!

FOR JAG PANZER, TEAM SPIRIT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE. WITHOUT TEAM SPIRIT, GUITARIST MARK BRIODY WOULD NO LONGER SEE ANY REASON FOR CONTINUING THE BAND.

We're like a family, we've all known each other for many years, he says and looks back at the years between 2011 and 2013 when Jag Panzer were on the brink of calling it a day. Two band members quit and there was little interest in hiring new people and starting over. Introducing new musicians would have been tough, so we decided to disband. But then the American power metal act's strong fan base made itself heard, causing the spark to be rekindled. Briody: We had a lot of interest in our early albums, so my band mates soon noticed that people were still listening to Jag Panzer, that the audience was still there. We started talking on the phone more and more. Some excellent gig offers arrived so we decided we should get back together. What a stroke of good fortune, after all now the public can look forward to an accomplished comeback album. The Deviant Chord is a veritable metal manifesto and consists of ten awesome songs featuring all those typical Jag Panzer strengths that the band's fans have come to appreciate.

Together with band members John Tetley (bass), Harry 'The Tyrant' Conklin (vocals), Rikard Stjernquist (drums) and Joey Tafolla (lead guitar), who has returned to the fold, Briody has recorded an album that impresses in every respect and that benefits from the outstanding qualities of all five band members. John does our 'quality control', meaning that he makes sure every song wedo is the best it can be. Harry is a musical genius. He's been singing since we were kids, he's very skilled in vocal arrangements and vocal recording techniques. This skill makes him a very big contributor in the songwriting. Rikard is all about drumming. He's been drumming since he was a small child and has never stopped. He grew up living all around the world and he has always been in a band. Joey is the classic lead player in every sense of the world. He has amazing skill on the guitar plus an outstanding stage presence. His playing makes every song better.

    Bye Bye Blackbird

Originally recorded in 1962, these are two European concert performances with John Coltrane's classic quartet-pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy
Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones backed up the great saxophonist. With a brief yet incredibly strong playlist, Bye Bye Blackbird allows listeners to hear
Coltrane delving deep inside two pieces: Bye Bye Blackbird and Traneing In. In these extended versions, the horn player does everything possible with
chord structures, and then moves into the impossible, resulting in some of the most powerful Coltrane tenor saxophone on record.

In 1967, before there was a Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. The four musicians were only together for three months, which makes it even more remarkable that a staunch fan from Holland was able to sneak a one channel reel to reel tape recorder into five London clubs and capture this exciting glimpse into music history. For almost fifty years these tapes have remained unheard until John recently got them and began restoring them with the technical assistance of Eric Corne of Forty Below Records. Coltrane Plays The Blues (MONO)

    Mono version

Recorded on 24 October 1960 in NYC, Coltrane Plays The Blues is perhaps a misleading title for this album as Coltrane is not so much playing the blues as bringing the feeling of blues into the idiom of jazz. This memorable album, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass, hails from Coltranes first period as leader of his own quartet, and finds Coltrane playing then highly unusual soprano sax on two numbersBlues To Bechet, a pianoless tribute to the great Sydney Bechet, and Mr. Syms, where McCoy Tyner is given the opportunity to really show his stuff, which he does masterfully. Includes Exotica (also recorded during this session) as a bonus track + 4 more bonus alternate tracks on the CD.

    Ballads

Before this ballad album was released, John Coltrane's critics and jazz fans classed him as an 'avant-gardist', a modernist, an angry, wild young man who made his tenor saxophone scream out. Tongues wagged that free jazz could be made by just anyone who hung a horn around his neck.

These eight ballads made people stop and listen with real pleasure. "Have you heard him? He can blow the notes properly, the pianist knows all the harmonies, and the drummer does far more than just bash!" These words were to be heard and read everywhere, in the specialist magazines, and in the jazz clubs from New York to Tokyo. All the themes are taken from the American Songbook, from musicals, and well-known numbers performed by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee among others. All of them have been performed time and time again and although the musicians played the themes for the very first time at the recording session, their interpretation was well structured while at the same time fresh and intense. With the exception of just one number, all the titles were a complete success at the very first take; but that is not merely that which underlines the high musical standard of the quartet. Fans and critics alike have continued to hold this early Impulse production in high esteem to this very day, which is certainly due to the producer Bob Thiele. But a great part of the album's success is also due to the excellent work of the recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who has captured the intimate atmosphere with his microphones.

    Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood

Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood is a title to set tongues wagging and minds wondering, but for an album that seems born of a return to John's youth it seems safely apt in its mischievousness.

After nearly 50 years of making music it's still freshly evident that Cale draws from a make believe world first imagined by his young self. Track title 'Mothra' pays homage to the Japanese monster from Godzilla movies. As a boy practicing scales in grey skied Welsh valleys such fantastical flights of fancy must have been reassuring of the path that was potentially about to unfold for him. Lyrics reveal even more explicitly earlier incarnations of Cale and in the same song we relive an encounter with a local bully, You see me running, you see me climb, reading my books and always trying, laughing and teasing and I love to play, dreaming my dreams are never far away.

Elsewhere Cale's doing what he does best, guiding listeners through the places, politics, and people of the day. A wide range of human experience is reflected and often it's for the listener to dig deeper to find what's being documented. Sometimes however part of the tapestry is pulled soberingly into focus; when listening to 'Scotland Yard' while the Leveson enquiry plays out, it's all too easy to recognize the guilty.

As a producer Cale has reached a new plateau on this record. At the albums most maximal, it feels like looking at a collection of precious stones. Myriads of differently coloured and textured surfaces carefully placed together, each finding their own space to beckon the ear. It's a blend of chaos and beauty in equal measure and a testament to the exploratory spirit at work, which ensures that as always, there's something new to the ears here.

    Giant Steps (Mono Remaster)

    Mono Remaster

History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience.

Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one.

Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers -- who was the only band member other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated -- replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course.

At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos -- the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed sheets of sound. Coltrane's polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre -- turning it into the equivalent of easy listening.

He wastes no time as the disc's title track immediately indicates a progression from which there would be no looking back. Line upon line of highly cerebral improvisation snake between the melody and solos, practically fusing the two. The resolute intensity of Countdown does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers. Tellingly, the contrasting and ultimately pastoral Naima was the last tune to be recorded, and is the only track on the original long-player to feature the Kind of Blue quartet. What is lost in tempo is more than recouped in intrinsic melodic beauty.

    Red

The long awaited follow up from the irrepressible Norwegian duo sees both '80s and modern day influences intertwined to create a landmark release. Red is a thoroughly unashamed love letter from Fredrik and musical partner Ketil Mosnes' to the influences that made Datarock what they are today. DEVO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruki Murakami, Don Delillo's White Noise, Scott Walker and the works of John Hughes and Peter Greenaway are all referenced. The duo does a fine balancing act here of sounding both modern and retro, and altogether funny. Highlights include the album's centerpiece and single The Pretender and Amarillion among others.

    Some Cold Rainy Day

Eden & John's East River String Band are a contemporary acoustic duo that play country/blues classics from the 1920s and 1930s. The band consists of Eden Brower on ukulele and vocals with John Heneghan on guitar and vocals, including special guest Terry Waldo (legendary ragtime piano player who has recorded and toured with Leon Redbone and Woody Allen).

The duo try to keep alive the rural music tradition that existed before the Great Depression of the '30s, playing primarily country blues covers including classics by such greats as Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Lottie Kimbrough and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Some Cold Rainy Day is by far one of the most enjoyable contemporary recordings of early pre-war blues music I have ever heard. Eden and John stay true to the original arrangements and vocals that these songs had when they were first released. I would call this a MUST-own for fans young and old of blues music and even those who want a modern introduction to the great old music of the 1920s and 1930s. PLEASE NOTE: Crumb not only did the cover for this album; he loves the music on it, too. Crumb collectors know that he does very little commercial work now with his busy schedule and will only illustrate items he himself loves. What better endorsement is there than that? - Ralph Deluca

    Ambsace

The second album of astonishing duets by guitarists James Elkington (who has toured and/or recorded with Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson, and Steve Gunn, among others) and Nathan Salsburg (an accomplished soloist deemed by NPR "one of those names we'll all associate with American folk guitar") is a sublime suite of nimble, filigreed compositions by two singular stylists. Belying its title-"ambsace" is the lowest throw of dice; snake eyes-the record thrives on a gentle empathy and generosity of spirit, sitting sneakily protean original compositions alongside gorgeous arrangements of songs by Duke Ellington and The Smiths at the same big hand-hewn table. "Their playing and guitar tones are so complementary, so perfectly wed that I wouldn't hesitate to put the duo up there with some of the very best acoustic guitar partnerships: Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn come immediately to mind, as does the work of Richard Crandell and Bill Bartels." - Work & Worry

    Wet Leather (Awaiting Repress)

Originally issued as a limited cassette on Mirror Universe Tapes, Wet Leather is fully realized with 6 bonus tracks and expanded artwork. The Slasher Film Festival Strategy has recorded countless releases over the last 17 years. Think of Wet Leather as the score to an unrealized film that channels b-movies, slasher films, horror, and of course John Carpenter. Aquarius Records speaks highly of SFFS. This guy does it way better than most. The synth sounds are thick and gristly, the melodies sinister and ominous, the tracks laced with skeletal drum machines, and sweeping epic backdrops, as far as Carpenter / Goblin worship goes, it doesn't get much better than this. For fans of Brad Fidel, John Carpenter, Death Waltz Recording Company, Boards of Canada, Sinking Body.
