    Lee Morgan, Volume 3

On trumpeter Lee Morgan's third album for Blue Note, recorded on 24 March 1957, Morgan's sextet-comprised of Gigi Gryce on alto and flute, Benny Golson on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums-showcases five compositions by sideman Benny Golson. The numbers include the fascinating "Hassan's Dream" as well as "I Remember Clifford", a tribute to the late trumpet player Clifford Brown. Tragically Morgan (a trumpet player like Brown) himself would also meet with an untimely demise, but in 1957, the nineteen year old Philadelphia native was one of the leading trumpeters on the New York jazz scene and remained so until his death at age 33. One of Morgan's most legendary performances, on John Coltrane's celebrated Blue Train album, would be recorded just a few months after this date.

Doxy present a picture disc reissue of John Coltrane's Blue Train, originally released in 1957. Blue Train is Coltrane's third session as a leader and one of the most iconic jazz albums of all-time. Featuring Curtis Fuller, Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Kenny Drew, and Philly Joe Jones, this is an absolutely essential jazz album and the title track is one of the most celebrated in jazz history, maybe matched only in recognition by Miles Davis's So What or Dave Brubeck's Take Five.

...Blue Train remains a superb achievement both musically and sonically, and Acoustic Sounds' pressing knocks off all other reissues...The sound is immediate, with superb instrumental balance, and a big, airy, coherent soundstage. The bass and drums are well captured, serving as deep anchors that allow the horn players to blow away with a sense of controlled yet astonishing freedom. - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2009

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their hands Back home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent me I hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. - Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

John Coltrane's most important and best selling album after A Love Supreme. This was the first fully realized masterpiece by Coltrane. The superbly executed and blended ensembles have a haunting quality and each solo is a memorable treasure.

    John Coltrane, sax (tenor)
