The Atlantic Years In Mono (Box Set)

    Fully Remastered In Glorious Mono

Packaged In An Elegant Cloth-Bound Box

    12" X 12", 32-Page, Perfect-Bound Booklet

While John Coltrane first gained attention for his revolutionary 'sheets of sound' technique, it was the deep spirituality of his music that really made his recordings as a bandleader such classics. The albums this giant of music recorded for Atlantic in 1959 and 1960 really represent the heart of his legacy.

John Coltrane's life will be the subject of a new documentary (tentative title: Chasin' Trane), out later this year, and now, for the first time since their original release, this box set gathers his mono recordings from the Atlantic vaults.

    Features:

    A Love Supreme

Ranked 47/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Right from the very first hearing, absolutely every single jazzcritic shared the same opinion - whether trained musicians or not, true or would-be jazz expert: "A Love Supreme" is John Coltrane's most important recording. And the rave reviews which appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swingjournal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized that Coltrane's deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music-making. It not only enabled him to express himself with great intensity but also lent him the necessary inner peace to conceive a work of almost 40 minutes in length and to lead his quartet along the same path as himself.

The first section, entitled "Acknowledgement", has a forceful bass line which runs throughout the whole work. The powerful sound increases in intensity, whereby the bass motif undergoes constant modulation, with John Coltrane's meditative singing creating immense tension.

In "Resolution" Coltrane's powerful, quasi hymnlike expression comes to the fore, with McCoy Tyner achieving equal intensity in his solo. "Pursuance", with its density, quick-as-lightning runs and block chords, gives us a taste of John Coltrane's later 'free' phase. "Psalm" is filled with the famous, almost static melodies rather like a fervent prayer which are so typical for John Coltrane. "A Love Supreme" has been a faithful companion and teacher of generations of saxophonists and its message goes way beyond Music and is still valid today.

The complicated rhythm patterns and diverse sonic textures on OlÉ Coltrane are evidence that John Coltrane was once again charting his own course. His sheer ability as a maverick -- beyond his appreciable musical skills -- guides works such as this to new levels, ultimately advancing the entire art form.

Historically, it's worth noting that recording had already commenced two days prior to this session on Africa/Brass, Coltrane's debut for the burgeoning Impulse! label. The two sets complement each other, suggesting a shift in the larger scheme of Coltrane's musical motifs. The assembled musicians worked within a basic quartet setting, featuring Coltrane on soprano and tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums, with double-bass chores held down by Art Davis and Reggie Workman. Added to that are significant contributions and interactions with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax (although Dolphy's contract with another record label prevented him from being properly credited on initial pressings of the album).

The title track is striking in its resemblance to the Spanish influence heard on Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. This is taken a bit further as Coltrane's combo stretches out with inspired improvisations from Dolphy, Hubbard, Tyner, and Coltrane, respectively. OlÉ likewise sports some amazing double-bass interaction. The combination of a bowed upright bass played in tandem with the same instrument that is being plucked has a sinister permeation that undoubtedly excited Coltrane, who was perpetually searching for sounds outside the norm. The haunting beauty of Aisha stands as one of the finest collaborative efforts between Tyner, the song's author, and Coltrane. The solos from Hubbard, Dolphy, and an uncredited Tyner gleam from within the context of a single facet in a multi-dimensional jewel.

    Giant Steps

Ranked 102/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Giant Steps was recorded in 1959 by John Coltrane. This was the first album where all songs recorded were original compositions of Coltrane. The album showcases Coltrane's masterful improvisational style that is now known as sheets of sound. Giant Steps is often used as a practice piece because of its chord progression, and is seen by jazz musicians as the standard for modern jazz, also being used as a gauge of measuring a musician's improvisational skill. Soon after the release of Giant Steps, Coltrane ventured into modal jazz, so this album is often viewed as his farewell to bebop.

Released August 17, 1959, on Columbia Records in the United States. Recording sessions for the album took place at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City on March 2 and April 22, 1959. The sessions featured Davis's ensemble sextet, which consisted of pianist Bill Evans (Wynton Kelly on one track), drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley.

After the entry of Bill Evans into his sextet, Davis followed up on the modal experimentations of Milestones (1958) and 1958 Miles (1958) by basing the album entirely on modality, in contrast to his earlier work with the hard bop style of jazz. Though precise figures have been disputed, Kind of Blue has been described by many music writers not only as Davis's best-selling album, but as the best-selling jazz record of all time. On October 7, 2008, it was certified quadruple platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It has been regarded by many critics as the greatest jazz album of all time and Davis's masterpiece. The album's influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical music, has led music writers to acknowledge it as one of the most influential albums ever made. In 2002, it was one of fifty recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2003, the album was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

    Coltrane

Considered by many to be his finest single album, Coltrane finds John Coltrane displaying all of the exciting elements that sparked brilliance and allowed his fully formed instrumental voice to shine through in the most illuminating manner. On tenor saxophone, he's simply masterful, offering the burgeoning sheets of sound philosophy into endless weavings of melodic and tuneful displays of inventive, thoughtful, driven phrases. Coltrane also plays a bit of soprano saxophone as a primer for his more exploratory work to follow. Meanwhile, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and especially the stellar McCoy Tyner have integrated their passionate dynamics into the inner whole of the quartet. The result is a most focused effort, a relatively popular session to both his fans or latecomers, with five selections that are brilliantly conceived and rendered. "Out of This World," at over 14 minutes in modal trim, is a powerful statement, stretched over Tyner's marvelous and deft chords, the churning rhythms conjured by Jones, and the vocal style Coltrane utilizes as he circles the wagons on this classic melody, including a nifty key change. "Tunji" is a mysterious, easily rendered piece in 4/4 which speaks to the spiritual path Coltrane tred, a bit riled up at times while Tyner remains serene. Hard bop is still in the back of their collective minds during "Miles' Mode," a sliver of a melody that jumps into jam mode in a free-for-all blowing session, while the converse is to be found in Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," the quintessential ballad and impressive here for the way Coltrane's holds notes, emotion, and expressive intellectuality. On soprano you can tell Coltrane is close to taking complete control of his newly found voicings, as a playful, jaunty "The Inch Worm" in 3/4 time is only slightly strained, but in which he finds complete communion with the others. Even more than any platitudes one can heap on this extraordinary recording, it historically falls between the albums OlÉ Coltrane and Impressions -- completing a triad of studio efforts that are as definitive as anything Coltrane ever produced, and highly representative of him in his prime.--Michael G. Nastos

Offering: Live At Temple University documents a legendary concert by John Coltrane at Temple University in his hometown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
on November 11, 1966, six weeks after his fortieth birthday and nine months before his untimely death. Offering incorporates a look that is contiguous with the graphic identity of Impulse! Records, Coltrane's exclusive label from 1961
until the end of his life. This is the first officially sanctioned release of an undiscovered, complete Coltrane performance since 2005. It captures Coltrane in
exemplary form, navigating the language he had developed during the last phase of his musical path with passion and pellucid logic. Operating at
equivalent levels of invention and energy are three members of his working quintet of one year's standing his wife, Alice Coltrane, on piano; Pharoah
Sanders on reeds and flute; and Rashied Ali on drums.

Offering is emblematic of the efflorescent energies and radical ideas that Coltrane himself had much to do with bringing forth during the seven years after
1960, when he left the employ of Miles Davis to pursue his vision as a leader. There are versions of Coltrane's 1960 hits "Naima" and "My Favorite
Things," a transformational reworking of the 1964 ballad "Crescent," a spirit-raising rendering of "Leo," which he had recorded on several previous
occasions during 1966, and the hymnal "Offering," which he would record on a February 15, 1967 studio session that Impulse! would release during the
    '90s as Spiritual Offering.

On Offering, Resonance Records achieves the highest possible audio quality, using direct transfers of original master reels from a location recording by
Temple's WRTI-FM, remastered at 96kHz/24 bit, that were tracked down by Coltrane scholar Yasuhiro Fujioka.
The immense life-force that animates the proceedings on this November 1966 evening in Philadelphia belies the declining state of Coltrane's health. It is
still difficult to grasp and to accept that he was firmly in the grip of the liver cancer that would still his voice on July 17, 1967. As co-producer Ashley Kahn
states in his liner notes, "Coltrane was pointing the way forward for generations of players to come, pushing the music to exhilarating, spiritual heights that
caught most by surprise. In 1966, that wasn't what jazz performances were about not yet."

All-Star Musician Lineup of Red Garland, John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, George Joyner and Arthur Taylor. Originally Released in November 1957.

Some groups have existed only in the recording studio but have produced music of lasting value.

This quintet, under pianist Red Garland's leadership, actually did play some gigs around New York in the fall of 1957, but even if it hadn't, the rapport in the studio would still have been powerful. Beginning with the association of Garland and sax master John Coltrane in the Miles Davis Quintet and continuing with Arthur Taylor's trio connection with Garland, and trumpeter Donald Byrd's having worked with all of them in one form or another, there was enough of a common spirit in the musical attitudes of all the participants. The title blues spans an entire side; the overleaf is shared by Gershwin's They Can't Take That Away from Me and Dameron's Our Delight.

Soultrane is the fourth album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1958 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7142. It was recorded at the studio of Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, New Jersey.

The album is a showcase for Coltrane's late-1950s "sheets of sound" style, the term itself coined by critic Ira Gitler in the album's liner notes. Also featured is a long reading of Billy Eckstine's ballad standard "I Want to Talk About You", which Coltrane would revisit often during his career, most notably on the album Live at Birdland. Among the other tracks is the popular theme "Good Bait" by Tadd Dameron, and Fred Lacey's elegiac "Theme For Ernie". "You Say You Care" is from the Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

    Coltrane

After establishing himself as a star on the rise with the Miles Davis quintet, the Thelonious Monk quartet, and various Prestige recordings with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane made his debut as a leader on this excellent self-titled 1957 release. The 6-song set finds the tenor sax giant joined by John Splawn (trumpet), Sahib Shihab (baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Al Heath (drums) on a pair of Trane's own compositions in Straight Street and Chronic Blues, alongside Cal Massey's Bakai and pop fare such as Violets for Your Furs, While My Lady Sleeps and Time Was.

This album found 'Trane teetering back and forth between what would eventually come to dominate his musical mindset (free improvisation as a compositional tool) and the accessible melodic and rhythmic structures of 'hard bop. "After repeated listening to this album I felt that any comments here would be unnecessary. After all, John Coltrane and his men have something to say musically and the true jazz lovers will understand the music without detailed explanation. There is no need for album notes on the merits of "Trane's" music... there will be plenty of accolades given in newspapers and magazines about the virtues of this album". (Bob Thiele - Original liner notes)

    Audiophile Clear Vinyl
Audiophile Clear Vinyl is made using the highest quality co-polymer available and processed without any carbon additive in order to dramatically reduce the "electrical distortion" often found on records. By itself the co-polymer of vinyl is transparent. In order to make the record black in color the plant must use a carbon additive with trace metals that can become magnetized. This is what causes electrical distortion during playback. That is the reason why we choose to offer our records in the following manner:

    Blue Train (Picture Disc)

Doxy present a picture disc reissue of John Coltrane's Blue Train, originally released in 1957. Blue Train is Coltrane's third session as a leader and one of the most iconic jazz albums of all-time. Featuring Curtis Fuller, Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Kenny Drew, and Philly Joe Jones, this is an absolutely essential jazz album and the title track is one of the most celebrated in jazz history, maybe matched only in recognition by Miles Davis's So What or Dave Brubeck's Take Five.

    The John Coltrane Quartet Plays

The year 1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations (after stating quick throwaway themes) that were full of passion and fury. This particular studio album has two standards (a stirring Chim Chim Cheree and Nature Boy) along with two recent Coltrane originals (Brazilia and Song of Praise). Art Davis plays the second bass on Nature Boy but otherwise this set (a perfect introduction for listeners to Coltrane's last period) features the classic Quartet comprised of the leader, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.

    Milestones

Only Record to Feature Davis Original Sextet, Including Rhythm Section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones

Title Track Stands as First-Ever Modal Composition Even as Blues and Hard-Bop Flavors Make LP One of Davis Most Explosive Affairs

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet. He made every moment count. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Due to its sandwiched position between the more famous Round About Midnight and epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains, for too many music lovers, an overlooked classic.
