Dead Man's Town: A Tribute To Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A.

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The U.S.A.'
Although it would become his biggest selling album with seven top 10 singles
on the Billboard Hot 100, Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars
says "any of those songs could be played with acoustic guitar alone and
still be great." Taking this idea as its premise, 'Dead Man's Town: A Tribute to
Born in the U.S.A' strips the album's twelve indelible originals to the core, with
contributions from Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Low, Nicole Atkins, Justin
Townes Earle, Blitzen Trapper, Joe Pug, Trampled by Turtles, and more. Rolling Stone premiered Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires' Dave Cobb-produced
cover of "Born In The U.S.A," saying these artists are "reimagining 'Born in
the U.S.A.'... with a reduced approach more influenced by that of the acoustic
    'Nebraska.

Isbell says of his cover, ""Born In The U.S.A." is one of my favorites
because so many people have seemingly misunderstood the lyrical content
and the song's overall tone. When you listen to the demo, the dark, minor key
arrangement makes it clear that this is not strictly a song of celebration.
We wanted to stay true to that version." Amanda Shires adds, "I love that
the song paints a picture of struggle in the face of the American dream, and
the irony in the chorus is delivered with such force that it nearly
    transcends irony altogether."

    Messenger

After playing over 200 shows, including runs with Steve Earle, M. Ward and Josh Ritter, Pug took to the studio to record his sophomore release. While the Nation of Heat EP may have earned him the title of talent to watch, with Messenger, Pug explores new territory, sneaking pedal steel guitar into The Sharpest Crown and backing The Door is Always Open with a powerhouse rhythm section. He does not, however, let his solo charm escape the album. Songs like Bury Me Far (From My Uniform) and Unsophisticated Heart make it obvious that Pug is still master of the guy-and-the-guitar song.

    The Great Despiser

    Colored Vinyl

The Great Despiser, the new album from celebrated singer/songwriter Joe Pug, is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed full-length debut, Messenger, and his wildly popular word-of-mouth EP, Nation of Heat. The 11-track release was recorded in Chicago with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Califone). In addition to Pug, the album features various acclaimed musicians, including Sam Kassirer (Jos Ritter, Langhorne Slim) on piano, organ and marimba as well as backing vocals from The Hold Steady's Craig Finn on the album's title track. Pug has toured alongside Steve Earl, M. Ward and Josh Ritter and has recently performed at both Lollapalooza and the Newport Folk Festival.

Not only does Chicago-based singer have a beautifully mature voice, but the lyrics possess wisdom seemingly beyond his age. Pair that with his powerful songwriting and it's nearly impossible to avoid drawing comparisons between Pug and folk legends like Bob Dylan or contemporaries like Josh Ritter. - NPR Music

    Windfall

If the opening notes on Joe Pug's new LP "Windfall" are a bit disorienting, his fans won't likely be surprised. The Austin, TX singer songwriter has made a habit of defying expectations so the piano-driven "Bright Beginnings" and the atmospheric rumination of "Great Hosannas" are just further indication that he's quite comfortable stepping outside of the guy-with-a-guitar trappings of the genre.

His rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind "Messenger" (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. "I never quite found a live band that captured what I was aiming for until I connected with Greg [Tuohey--electric guitar] and Matt [Schuessler--upright bass]. It was an arrangement that maybe didn't make a ton of sense on paper but 10 minutes into the first rehearsal I knew this was going to be my band." The following years would have them on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and The Newport Folk Festival.
