Mad Dogs & EnglishmenMad Dogs and Englishmen is Joe Cocker's legendary live album, recorded in 1970 at the Fillmore East.
For this record Joe Cocker created a unique sound: a veritable definition of big-band rock with three dozen players working behind the singer.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen consists mostly of covers, drawing equally from rock (The Rolling Stones, Traffic, Bob Dylan, The Beatles) and soul (Ray Charles, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding), and is as much a showcase for arranger & bandleader Leon Russell as it is for Joe Cocker.
As we now know the tour from which this album was drawn took a heavy toll on Joe Cocker and especially his vocal chords because the music was presented on such a grand scale.
Nevertheless, the music still stands to this date and beyond.LP 1

Leon RussellPressed On 180-Gram Translucent Blue Vinyl
Leon Russell was born in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1941. He studied classical piano as a boy and took up trumpet in his teens. Not too many years later, he was on the road as a sideman to Jerry Lee Lewis and Ronnie Hawkins and ended-up on the west coast.
Leon remained in Los Angeles and quickly became one of the city's more prominent studio musicians also often working as an arranger, conductor and producer. Russell was one of Phil Spector's, "Wall of Sound" session people, he also played on The Byrds', "Mr. Tambourine Man," and arranged and co-wrote most of the big hits of pop star, Gary Lewis including She's Just My Style" and "Everybody Loves a Clown."
Leon Russell gained a higher public profile when the 1969 Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett album, "Accept No Substitute" became a major hit. Leon had arranged the album and played piano and guitar in his now distinctive style that became such a part of the sound of the group called Delaney & Bonnie and Friends.
Russell really skyrocketed when he got involved with Joe Cocker who was already a star. Cocker's producer, Denny Cordell hired Leon to arrange and co-produce the new Cocker album which included more hits for Joe including Leon's song, "Delta Lady." When Cocker set out to tour the US he logically recruited Leon to serve as bandleader and arranger for the now legendary 1970 "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. That renowned cross-country tour has been preserved as a feature film and live album.
Following the critical success of the tour, Russell's reputation was strong enough that he and Cordell formed their own record company - Shelter - and launched the label with this very Leon Russell, "Leon Russell" album. The album features the first ever recording of "A Song For You" which has become one of Russell's best-known songs with versions released over the years by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Elkie Brooks, Amy Winehouse, Donny Hathaway and Christina Aguilera.
The rest, as they say, is history for Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011 followed a few months later with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.1. A Song For You

A Touch Of Someone Else's ClassRed Vinyl
Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. A Touch Of Someone Else's Class is the follow up to their acclaimed 2007's debut Every Damn Time (Alive), and it's a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The blues groove monsters deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits.
With a sound that's blues-rooted but steeped in Stooges sludge, the Heavies' cranky, cranked-up sets burn black as tire fires. Stylistically, BDH is often lumped in with R.L. Burnside and Tom Waits. That's a fine place to start, but the comparison misses the band's joy and boogie. Instead, think Exile on Main Street recorded in Howlin' Wolf's casket. Nothing smooth or clean here. Just eight-bar skronk in bad need of a tetanus shot. - The Pitch Their attack of drums and keyboards is a mean, f-ed up, gospel punky hybrid and rocks with ragged, soulful passion. - Rock Sound Tom Waits growls. Joe Cocker growls. Myers bark like a man who had his throat ripped out by a wolf. He gargles the thick blues drawl of a man who has never inhaled without a Marlboro Red in his gob. - NME With just Myers on keyboards and vocals and Van Campbell behind the drums, the Black Diamond Heavies generate a mighty wall of sound and the duo cuts a hard, bluesy groove. - All Music GuideSide A:

Keep It SimpleAvailable On Vinyl For The First Time
Keep It Simple (2004) is the seventh studio album by blues artist Keb' Mo'. The album won a Grammy in 2005 for best contemporary Blues album, and features Robben Ford, Robert Cray, Vince Gill a.o.
Keb' Mo' crafted a warm, wry, Blues-informed version of Pop Americana that wrestles with contemporary problems like how to pay the mortgage, the high price of coffee, or how to afford a vacation. This is the first ever vinyl release of this great album!
Over the past two decades Keb' Mo' (born Kevin Moore) has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through his live and studio performances. His songs have been recorded by the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer.
And he's no stranger to acting. His acting career began in the early '90s, and in 1998 Keb' Mo' portrayed Robert Johnson in the documentary Can't You Hear the Wind Howl. Other acting jobs include his role as the ghostly bluesman Possum in the 2007 movie Honeydripper. But Keb stresses that his focus will always be on making music and being a communicator, a songwriter.1. France

Future's Past (Awaiting Repress)DAVE MASON--Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and TRAFFIC co-founding member--has announced the release his new album, FUTURE'S PAST (Something Music/MRI) featuring new versions of his classic songs plus new material that he has written and performed on tour over the last few years. Renowned for such Traffic hits as Feelin' Alright (covered by Joe Cocker) and Hole In My Shoe plus his solo signature tracks We Just Disagree and Only You Know and I Know, MASON's acclaimed solo career continues to flourish as he tours the U.S. with his new project billed as DAVE MASON'S TRAFFIC JAM.
The cover art illustration for FUTURE'S PAST was done by none other than Mr. Graham Nash from a photo he made of DAVE while at Nash's place in Hawaii.
Of the new release, MASON says, There is a great version of 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' that is kind of a re-write. There is a version of 'World in Changes' that is absolutely nothing like the original and there is a great live version that is absolutely beautiful of 'Sad and Deep as You.' There are two or three songs that were on a CD called 26 Letters 12 Notes that I did seven years ago, a Robert Johnson song, 'Come On in My Kitchen' and a brand new song called 'That's Freedom.'

Carney (200 Gram Vinyl)Hit Maker And Musician's Musician Struck Chart Gold With 1972 Album Carney
Analogue Productions Reissue On 200-Gram Vinyl
Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Master Tapes
Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings
Heavyweight Tip-On Old-Style Jacket From Stoughton Printing
With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.
Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.
But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.
Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.
Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.1. Tight Rope

God Willin' And The Creek Don't RiseGod Willin' And The Creek Don't Rise is Ray Lamontagne's fourth studio record, and follow-up to the heralded Gossip in the Grain. Entirely self produced (for the first time), the album was recorded in two weeks at the homemade recording studio in LaMontagnes newly restored historic home in the woods of western Massachusetts. With Rays vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined Pariah Dogs consist of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar). A Light That Never DiesOn his second album A Light That Never Dies which will be released in North America via Forty Below Records, KaiL Baxley has returned with a hard hitting, lush and beautifully haunting collection of songs. Co-produced with Producer/Engineer Eric Corne whose recording credits include Lucinda Williams, Glen Campbell, Kim Deal and John Mayall, the album was recorded over the last year in three different cities.
"We used a lot of really old gear on this one to capture that warm analog sound and preserve its truth," says KaiL about the album. "I'm proud of what Eric and I got out of the studio and I'm eager to get out on the road and share it with people."
Hailing from the small backwater town of Willison-Elko - a town so small that most people in South Carolina don't even know where it is, much less the rest of the world. It's only claim to fame is soul legend James Brown, with whom Baxley shared an unlikely friendship as a child. Perhaps this was one of the leading influences in Baxley's soul-drenched music or perhaps it was the similar circumstances in which they were raised that fuels such deep emotion in an individual.
Abandoned by both his mother and father as a small child Baxley was raised by his grandfather Woody until age 12. When he passed away, KaiL bounced from one living situation to another, rarely living in one place for more than a year at a time. It was in this constant migration that he found escape in a pair of old RCA headphones.
"It wasn't all bad really," he recalls. "I got to know quite a bit of music from all different genres during that time period. I'd stay with my uncle for a while and pick up some Van Morrison; my auntie gave me the Stones;friends parents turned me on to gospel. Then I discovered hiphop and it was all over. I was hooked."
This is the very apparent source of inspiration in KaiL Baxley's genre-bending music that also blends blues, indie rock, soul, gospel, and syncopated hiphop-style beats into a most exquisite and easily drinkable cocktail of sound - a sound that he has dubbed "Soul Swagger".
KaiL's debut effort, Heatstroke/The Wind and the War, was presented as a double EP which displayed the yin and yang of his musical range. A surprise nominee for NPR's Album Of The Year, it received critical acclaim, including a debut at SXSW, where Baxley was tapped as, "One of NPR's top new artists" by All Songs Considered.
"His voice falls somewhere between Joe Cocker and Bill Withers with a husky authority. The guy is a whiz-bang folkie-turned-soul-rocker and has a voice which can make you dance or which melts butter, depending upon the tune."
