    Divers

Good heavens - five years go by - what can one do? Dive, listener, knowing that your next hour will be filled with diversions aplenty: a wheeling circuit of sci-fi sea-shanties and cavalier ballads, narrated from parts unknown; a family of polysemic song-sets; a paranomasaic Liederkreis of harmonic sympathies and knotted hierarchies; a fanfare of brazen puns and martial lullabies, blazing in sorrow and horseplay and love, in turns symphonic and spare, joined by Mellotrons and Marxophones and Moogs, clavichords and celestas-and of course the harp, thrumming its threnodies of circadian invasions and avian irruptions and strange loops of Shepard-toned resonant-frequencies and something called goddamned Simulacreage...

The music of Divers is a wonder of considered arrangements - a taut line, threaded with the pearls of passed and passing times...a round, a chant, an incantation...a ray of light diverted eleven ways, into eleven songs that striate, in chromatic collusion, their simultaneous arc...a span that takes in lifetimes, but is immaculately sequenced for telescoped brevity. The music speeds with dissociative dread over montaged cityscapes; it hoofs with delight among the collaged quotations and sepia-toned codices of Popular Song; it ambles its carefree citational course through the public domain and down into the dustier corners of municipal parks, to lionize infamous airmen and anonymous Dutch Masters, to mourn pearl divers and Poorwills, and to elegize the ineluctable tragedy of relativity - a tragedy of parochial time, anecdotal time, dubious time...

At the center of the mythos and the maelstrom is the woman. Divers reminds us that Newsom is a melodist, above all - an acolyte of melody and beauty in form, a crackerjack of emotional truth conveyed with undiluted immediacy. "The Things I Say" seems a naked admission, after the epic swales of war and peace that precede it, and yet this sudden moment of piano and voice falls seamlessly into the flow, buffeted by the haunting winds of a musical saw and time-slipping reversal at the finish. ...so that, at the aortic confluence of such a complexity of strings and wires, winking beneath the lacquered layers of instrumental nacre, biding quietly between the ranges ofrhapsodic arrangement-including those by Nico Muhly, Ryan Francesconi, Dave Longstreth, Dan Cantrell, and Newsom herself - there lies an intimacy seldom achieved, and simply heard.

    We The Common

We The Common, the third full-length album from critically acclaimed artist Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Recorded at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone Studios and Dallas' Elmwood Studio, We The Common was produced by John Congleton [St. Vincent, Bill Callahan, Explosions In The Sky] and features a duet with Joanna Newsom on the track "Kindness Be Conceived." Thao Nguyen observes, We The Common is an album about wanting to be a human who tries and is grateful for the opportunity. It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. "I have had over a year respite from touring and recording-in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into."

    Fortitude

Denver's Ian Cooke released his second album, Fortitude, in January of 2012, with the help of The Greater Than Collective.

Produced by Ian O'Dougherty and mixed by Bob Ferbache, (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Wovenhand), Fortitude showcases the wide array of musical proficiency that Cooke possesses as he switches from playful to dark and sincere at the flick of a cello bow. Splicing in elements of indie, classical, progressive rock, and more, the album builds on the foundation laid down by his previous album, The Fall I Fell, and expands it with stronger writing and loftier concepts.

Cooke's talent coupled with his diligent work ethic has earned him several accolades, including features in SPIN, a Daytrotter session, a #1 ranking in the 2009 Denver Post Music Poll and "Best Singer Songwriter," "Best album," and "Best Avant-Garde" nods by Westword. Cooke was also featured alongside Billy Bragg, M. Ward, Owen Pallet, and more on a Joanna Newsom tribute.

He has toured in the US and Australia playing with The Dresden Dolls, Crooked Fingers, Built to Spill, The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, Blonde Redhead, Devotchka, Rasputina, Wovenhand, Pedro the Lion and many more. With packaging as engaging as the music it contains, Fortitude is a direct copy of nothing, a truly original and unique endeavor.

You And Me (Discontinued) (On Sale)

You & Me is Kevin Barker's debut album, released by Gnomonsong. Though it's his first solo release under his own name, Barker's no newcomer to the scene--he's spent the last few years recording, touring, and collaborating with Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver, Antony and the Johnsons, and Espers, to name just a few. Essentially acting as everyone's favorite sideman, Barker has influenced and helped create a sound with which this generation is happily familiar. During his college days, Barker became interested in the finger-style guitar playing of John Fahey and Bert Jansch and began to record under the name Currituck County. This solo project (sometime a duo with Vetiver / Espers drummer Otto Hauser) recorded albums for Teenbeat Records, Troubleman Unlimited, and the UK's Track and Field Organisation. Now Barker has assembled an unbelievable group of musicians for You & Me. Produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Lilys, Gary Louris, Devendra Banhart), the album features Pat Sansone (Wilco), Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis), Eric Johnson (Shins, Fruit Bats), and Otto Hauser (Vetiver, Espers). Full of sunny, rural country rock, You & Me recalls the rustic grooves of The Band and The Grateful Dead, the heady melancholy of Roy Harper, and the golden harmonies of CSNY.

    Plural

Electric Guest - LA-based duo Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton - have confirmed details for the long-awaited follow up to their 2012 debut. 'Plural', on Downtown/Interscope Records, breaks the group's almost five-year silence with their most confident, catchy, fully-realized music to date, featuring behind the scenes contributions from Joanna Newsom, Haim, and Justin Young from The Vaccines.

Recorded in LA, 'Plural' infuses Electric Guest's off-kilter blend of electronic, pop and R&B with an even more adventurous spirit than on 2012's 'Mondo.' Written during a period of self-reflection, 'Plural' embraces Taccone and Compton's original instincts, forgoing detailed arrangements and falsettos in favor of a back-to-basics approach - strong, natural vocals, intuitive musical instinct, and unbridled inspiration. The result is a sonic mÉlange that sounds as if it's from both the past and future, layering everything from 80s synths to iPhone drum machines to Latin and Caribbean percussion.

    Man & Myth

Man And Myth, Roy's first studio album in 13 years, isn't just proof
that one of the leading, most erudite and passionate orators of the
British folk rock renaissance hasn't lost an iota of his gifts, but also
timely evidence for anyone who has wondered why so many musical
luminaries have been lining up to praise this enigmatic and legendary singer-songwriter.

In 2011, Harper performed a special show at the Royal Festival Hall
in celebration of his 70th birthday, playing with guests including
Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson and Jimmy Page of Led
Zeppelin-who once penned a tribute called Hats Off To (Roy)
Harper. David Gilmour not only played on record and stage for
Harper, but Pink Floyd engaged him to sing Have A Cigar on the
band's landmark album Wish You Were Here. Fellow collaborator
Kate Bush has called Harper one of the greatest English songwriters while the late John Peel demanded, on his death, that cricket
obsessive Harper's When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease be
played at his funeral. Johnny Marr, meanwhile, has stated that
Harper's 1971 opus Stormcock was intense and beautiful and
    clever.

Four of the seven tracks that constitute Man And Myth were
recorded with Jonathan Wilson at his studio in Laurel Canyon.
Wilson had been assembling a Harper tribute album and the two
struck up a friendship after meeting backstage at London's Borderline in 2012. Heaven Is Here and The Exile, the album's epic
closing tracks, and January Man were subsequently recorded
    back in County Cork.

Man And Myth is incontrovertible proof to everyone of Roy Harper's
persisting brilliance, with many hallmarks of what has singled him
out since his first album 47 heady years ago.

    Dagger Beach

Dagger Beachwas Recorded at Tiny Telephone on 2 Analog Tape Without the Use of Computers.

The Vinyl Release Will be Issued as a QRP 200 Gram Audiophile Limited Pressing.

While it's true I did endure a terrible break-up at the beginning of writing this record, this is not a break
up record. Dagger Beach is a put-me-the-fuck-back-together record.

The break up came in late 2011, after endless months of White Wilderness touring. I returned home to an
empty house, and, as that's pretty unbearable when you're not quite right in the head, I decided to set out
walking. I hiked the Lost Coast (36 miles of off-the-grid splendor in Southern Humboldt County), I hiked
the entire 150-mile trail system of Pt. Reyes, I hiked for days, deep, deep in the woods, usually alone.
As I walked and walked, listening to records on repeat, I started obsessing about music again. Three
records found their way into my psyche and inspired much of this new record: Joanna Newsom's Have
One On Me, Silver Jews' The Natural Bridge, and Radiohead's King Of Limbs. I don't think you'll find
traces of these records in Dagger Beach, but their spirit and fearlessness deeply affected me. (Hence the
shout-out on the record to one of my lifelong heroes, David Berman.)

The first two reminded me how crucial great lyrics can be, how your experience of a record can evolve
and change as you slowly decode complex and thoughtful writing. King Of Limbsshowed me how
powerful linear songwriting can be, when subtle changes in form and repeating motifs slowly shift into
something else entirely (just try to follow Morning Mr. Magpie on headphones). There are many songs
on Dagger Beach that take this approach: Damage Control and Gaslight were both written to drum
patterns played by Jason Slota, my long-time partner. Jason played drums alone, without music, and I
adapted to his structures and rhythms. Doing this keeps me from relying on my usual tricks and
structures and forces me into brand new territory.

This strange experience, the endless hiking and backcountry camping off the grid, it completely changed
the songwriting process for me. I edited lyrics while walking, I worked out songs in my head. It didn't
come easy: the first time I camped alone (I was deep inside the million-acre Mendocino National Forest) I
freaked out, ended my trip early, and wrote Raw Wood the next day. By the end of 2012, I could stay out
for a week on my own.

As the experience changed me, it changed the record. Dagger Beach is looser, weirder, and more free
    because of it

    In The Hollows

there's a thrilling feeling of freedom to it all.
    - PITCHFORK

Nat Baldwin is a musical maverick one of the
best leftfield pop albums of the year.
    -DROWNED IN SOUND

    terrifically earnest, terrifyingly intimate, and
    terribly special.
    -THE BOSTON PHOENIX

In The Hollows is Nat Baldwin's followup to 2008's People Changes. Despite his busy scheule recording and touring as the bass player for Dirty Projectors, Nat found time to write
and record his most soulful and ambitious collection of songs to date. After recording the
initial tracks at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI, Nat recruited Otto Hauser for
drums and percussion, and Rob Moose and Clarice Jensen to write string arrangements.
Discussing the album's production, Nat says I wanted to achieve a consistency throughout
that my past albums have lacked. I wanted the strings to add to the mournful quality of the
songs, weaving their way through the sonic terrain, providing emotional emphasis, but also
leaving necessary amounts of space. Albums by Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Joanna Newsom,
Antony & the Johnsons, and Bill Callahan, to name a few, provided inspiration in balancing
that intimacy with minimal, but powerful, adornments.

Much of the album was written while Nat was training for a marathon at his home in Maine.
According to Nat, I had a pretty rigorous and consistent routine of running/working out
early in the morning, and working on music all afternoon/evening. I also started reading
obsessively during this time, as I wasn't moving around much after the morning marathon
training. Some of the songs were inspired by books I was reading, and some were inspired
by my lifestyle. Blending autobiographical details with fiction, the songs cover a wide
range of topics including boxing, drowning, bodybuilding, target practice, will power, Steve
Prefontaine, competition, separation, isolation, devastation, manipulation, conflagration,
    intoxication, and suicide.

Immersive, athletic, and often profound, In the Hollows represents his clearest and most
consistent album-length statement, melodically, structurally, and lyrically. Nat explains
that I hope it is as unsettling as it is beautiful. I want it to make people feel things they
    can't describe.

    Baby

Freedom often begins from terror, and White Hinterland's third album, Baby, addresses the fear
that comes along with breaking out of established rituals, or leaving a comfortable place, and
striking out into the unknown. Four years after her profile-raising release, Kairos(2010), Casey
Dienel aka White Hinterland has taken the gloves off and knuckled down to produce a deep,
dark, heady mix of songs. After two and a half years of writing and recording material in
Montreal and Portland, OR, Dienel moved back in to her family home in Scituate, MA. There
she forged a new aesthetic, spending five months building her own studio, The Glades, in her
parents' basement - the same space where she practiced piano and vocal lessons as a child.
Determined to helm her new album, Dienel spent months studying production, poring over
YouTube tutorials about Protools, mic'ing techniques and other minutiae.

Armed with this self-taught skill and her new studio, Dienel set forth to subvert the existing
power structure of male producer as svengali and female artist as figurehead (see: Billy
Corgan/Courtney Love, Timbaland/Aaliyah, Phil Spector/The Ronettes). She created her own,
new path on Baby, which showcases her as a singer/songwriter/producer who has only become
bolder and more resolute over the past three-plus years. Calling in her friends as pinch hitters,
Dienel worked acclaimed musicians Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna
Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (BeyoncÉ).

On her first four records, Dienel projected her fears and fantasies onto imaginary characters,
role play, and lush atmospherics. If Kairos was a work of atmosphere, then Baby sits at the
opposite end of that spectrum. Baby is about song craft. It is forceful, rooted in the physicality
of the voice, percussion and piano, and it is about getting straight to the point. Where her earlier
work occasionally showcased a strong Joni Mitchell influence, on new songs like "David" she
finds herself in Fiona Apple territory. Her lifelong love of R&B and gospel also comes to the fore,
these resonant styles complement and contrast the sharp dynamic shifts, booming drums, and
blasts of brass. On Metronome, Baby's centerpiece and most assertive track, she declares, All
day long I'm a boss. She's not asking for someone to serve as a steadying influence, but instead
requiring that it's necessary to keep up with her. It is the past three years of her life distilled into
song: joy, heartbreak, frustration, longing, disappointment, anger, and loss accumulated, poured
out and reborn in this new, unflinching release.
