    Flowers

Despite being written over the course of a year in four different sessions with four different lineups (but always with frontman Tim Kinsella at the helm), the first listen
reveals the songs on Flowers as a more cohesive unit than those on its predecessor, last year's Boo Human. This experience encapsulates the spirit of Joan of Arc, a mentality that embraces contradictions and tears apart common musical structures, only to rebuild them without a blueprint. Joan of Arc continues to succeed in doing what many strive for with a new album, creating an obscure combination of familiar, obvious ideas while sticking with the notion that if it feels good, do it.

    A Portable Model Of (Pre-Order)

Chicago's Joan of Arc blend post-rock's atmospherics and punk's volume and dynamics. Three members came from the emocore band Cap'n Jazz; when that band broke up, the trio wanted to change their musical direction, removing the boundaries and structures of punk and including more experimental elements like tape loops and electronics. Calling themselves Joan of Arc, the group went on tour with their friends the Promise Ring (who also featured ex-Cap'n Jazz members) in August 1996. After spending the fall of that year writing and recording, the band re-emerged in 1997 with A Portable Model of Joan of Arc, their full-length debut. The album continued Joan of Arc's evolution into an equally hard-hitting and progressive outfit that appealed to emo and post-rock fans alike. The following year they returned with How Memory Works, a more clearly stated version of their ambitious style. Joan of Arc rang in 1999 with the release of Live in Chicago 1999. In February 2003, the band returned with So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness.

He's Got The Whole This Land Is Your Land In His Hands

Twenty years now there's been this thing, our band, Joan of Arc. Sometimes we forget about it
and let it fizzle out for a year while we tend to our lives. Sometimes we cling to it for a year and
wake up surprised and exhausted every day for months on end, given walking tours of old
Italian towns, browsing dreary British pedestrian malls or barefooted organic grocers on the
Pacific coast. We know how lucky we are.

The less we feel like a band-the more we can continue to be a band, but escape that feeling of
doing all those shitty, corny things expected of bands-the truer to ourselves we feel. And you
all know it, everyone knows it even if everyone has to bury it to get on with their day-to-day:
the truer to ourselves we feel, the better everything gets.

We have shifted shapes and modified our approaches quite a number of times in the course of
twenty years. And we've done so always aiming to stay true to ourselves at that moment, by
instinct and with conscious intent. This time, it took us a long time to figure out how to start
back up. We threw away a lot of songs and started over, over and over.

But here's the thing: We are getting better at being ourselves. So many of the postures of
youth just fall away with time. Most bands break up by that point, or become caricatures of
their younger selves. Because money is tricky, or I should say, it comes to be that energy is
tricky to muster after all of it goes into the basics of sustaining yourself.

Every day, at some point, it occurs to me that Richard Brautigan killed himself at the age that I
am now. But I got this community of weirdo collaborators to lean on that he never had.
We've never had an audience that gets any validation of its coolness through liking us. We've
mangled, juxtaposed, and collaged too many elements for that social contract. But we trust
    each other.

This time, finally, we trusted each other enough to throw all the songs away, to even throw
away every preconceived idea about which one of us should take position at which instrument.
We hit Record and played, and our collective tastes emerged. And they, our tastes in the
moment, were the only standards in all the expanse of the stupefying and beautiful unknown
universe, that we regarded as relevant in the least.

Life Like is Joan of Arc distilled down to/embracing its rock essence. Gone from the bands music (for now) are the electronics and layers upon layers of tracks. Gone from their liner notes are an extensive list of musicians and instruments. Instead, Life Like is the result of four men adhering to Thoreaus famous principle, Simplify, simplify, simplify!

Life Like is the first Joan of Arc to feature Victor Villarreal (Capn Jazz, Owls) as a member. The album was recorded at Chicagos Electrical Audio with Steve Albini (who has previously engineered records for two other Kinsella projects: Owls and Make Believe).

    Testimonium Songs

Limited edition, hand numbered vinyl of 550

Testimonium Songs collects the song cycle composed by Joan of Arc (Tim Kinsella, Bobby Burg,
and Theo Katsaounis) to be performed live in Testimonium, a work of performance by well-respected
experimental theater ensemble Every House Has a Door.

Testimonium responds -- both in substance and in style --to Charles Reznikoff's monumental work
Testimony, a translation into poetry of courtroom transcripts of witness and victim testimonies in
criminal cases and cases of workplace negligence, in the US, spanning the years 1885 to 1915.
Performances of Testimonium incorporate modern dance, theater, and original songs written and
    played by Joan of Arc.
In a departure for the band, these highly structured compositions, developed over a two-year
rehearsal period, emulate Reznikoff's poetics by shaping themselves according to a mosaic method
    - rotating a fixed set of musical units in warping permutations.

The lyrics re-invent the strategies of Objectivist poetry, by turns surreal, ordinary, testimonial, and
explosive, releasing the undercurrent of emotion in the poems while (almost) never quoting them
    directly.
Beyond collecting the Testimonium Songs, the record has a life of its own, with the contributions of
stellar musicians David Grubbs, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Michael Zerang, and Jim Baker,
additional vocals by Melina Ausikaitis, and musical material not included in the performance.

After 8 menacing albums, the kings of black metal return with their most dastardly tale yet. Chronicling the story of the world's first serial killer, French nobleman and soldier of Joan of Arc, Gilles De Rais. Like they had done with the story of Elizabeth Bathory, Cradle of Filth weave a tale of murder, the occult, and sinister deed around their trademark metal sound. Fueled by breakneck speed, crushing guitars, and haunting vocals- the band has delivered their hardest most aggressive and chilling piece yet.

Cap'n Jazz are an emo/punk band formed in the early 1990's in Buffalo Grove, IL by high school friends Tim Kinsella (vocals), Victor Villareal (guitar), and Sam Zurick (bass), along with Tim's younger brother Mike (drums). The group released their lone LP in the spring of 1995 and broke up while on tour later that summer. Members would continue making music in bands like The Promise Ring, Joan Of Arc and American Football.

Fueled by some of the members post-Cap'n Jazz activities, interest in the band grew after their break up and in 1998 Jade Tree Records compiled most of their recordings (which were all out of print) on to a double-disc release. This double LP re-issue will be pressed on 180-gram black vinyl for ultimate sound quality.

Perhaps best known as the pioneering guitarist behind the legendary groups Cap'n Jazz and Owls, Victor Villarreal is one of the most inventive guitarists of modern indie-rock. His unique guitar style includes elements of classical, spanish, indie and even metal. Now on the heels of his reunion with Owls (Polyvinyl), Victor is back with his new solo long player, "Sleep Talk".

"Sleep Talk" is Villarreal's second proper solo effort, and his first to enlist bassist (and early Joan of Arc member) Erik Bocek. Utilizing a "one man band" style of performance, the majority of "Sleep Talk" was recorded live in the studio, with Victor simultaneously performing guitar, percussion and vocals. Hinged on the tumbling rhythms of Villarreal's other-worldly guitar style, the tracks on "Sleep Talk" are diverse and moody, and will tickle your brain into a meditative stasis.

    Japan 3/11/11: A Benefit Album

In early March of 2011, Japan suffered one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, a tsunami which devastated its northern coast, and a nuclear disaster the scope of which is still not fully understood.

23 artists including of Montreal, St. Vincent, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, David Bazan, Joan of Arc, Owen, Casiokids, STRFKR, and many more spent the past several months entering the studio and going through their song archives to donate songs to this compilation in an effort to aid the victims of the tsunami and the negligence which led to the disaster that continues to affect Japan.

In addition, a handful of local bands from Champaign-Urbana (Polyvinyls hometown), Tulsa, and San Francisco agreed to be on the compilation and will be organizing benefit shows in their respective areas.

    Songs Of Love And Hate

    Meticulously Remastered

Sourced From The Original Columbia Records Stereo Masters In Order To Preserve The Sound Of The Original Albums

With 1971's Songs of Love and Hate, Cohen delivered one of his most emotionally intense sets, with such memorable numbers as Avalanche, Famous Blue Raincoat and Joan of Arc ranking with his greatest compositions.

By the time Leonard Cohen began his recording career in 1967, the iconoclastic Canadian troubadour was already well established as a poet and author. He quickly emerged as one of the eras most original and influential singer-songwriters, building a large and legendary body of work that continues to inspire artists and listeners alike.

Much of Cohen's reputation and mystique was established by his early work for Columbia Records, particularly the five albums he recorded between 1967 and 1974. Now, these five classic albums, unavailable on vinyl for two decades, have been lovingly restored to their original LP format.

For their new Sundazed editions, all five albums have been meticulously remastered and have been sourced from the original Columbia Records stereo masters in order to preserve the sound of the original albums. In keeping with the exacting standards for which Sundazed has become known, each album will be pressed on high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art.

    TWO

    180-Gram Light Blue vinyl

It didn't come fast and it didn't come easy. It's been over
two decades since Tim Kinsella, Mike Kinsella, Victor
Villarreal, and Sam Zurick formed Cap'n Jazz as teenagers,
and 13 years since they followed up that band with their
debut self-titled album under the name owls.

In the time that has passed since then, the members have
kept active with a string of other endeavors (including
owen, Joan of Arc, Make Believe, and ghosts and Vodka)
that have never failed to showcase their vast, diverse, and
    ever-evolving musical aptitudes.

Slowly, but surely, new owls songs fell into place: Villarreal
would introduce a guitar riff from which Tim Kinsella would
build a simple chord sequence and vocal melody. Then, the
entire group would hash out the rest of the song amidst
yelling, arguing, and practices that were often cut short or
    canceled outright.

"The band dynamic was eerily similar to the first record,"
reveals Mike Kinsella. "In some ways I think we all regressed
to whatever roles we filled then, for better and for worse."

While sonically their technique still has the ability to dazzle,
age and experience have lent new perspectives to tracks
such as "I'm Surprised " and "Ancient Stars Seed..." --
making them more aggressive and direct, but certainly no
    less captivating.

In a world that increasingly favors style over substance,
owls is unwilling to compromise the latter for the former.
And that, at least, is something all the members can easily
    agree on.
