    Unvarnished

Unvarnished is the 14th studio album by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts released on the Blackheart Records label.

Joan Jett has been through some dark times over the last 10 years - so many that she refers to it as her 'decade of death.' But she's channeled that grief into a new album, 'Unvarnished,' that contains some of her most personal work.

I wrote a lot about what teenagers write about: love, sex and partying and having a good time. As you grow up, things change, she explained. You have responsibilities and realize you've got to do stuff. I suppose you could run from that, but you've got to be there for your family and your friends.

Jett's 'decade of death' included the loss of both parents, which - as one might expect - proved difficult to cope with. They made it possible for me to do this. They encouraged me. They got me the guitar, she recalled. My father, who hated rock & roll, put up with it. He didn't come down on me to stop it. So losing my parents was big, and I think it translated to the music in songs like 'Fragile,' which is about life being fragile, love being fragile, how easy it is to break hearts.

Those themes carry over into other songs on 'Unvarnished,' as Jett went on to explain. 'Hard to Grow Up' is about responsibility and realizing that I've got to do this, she continued. The song 'Make It Back' is about Hurricane Sandy and people's attitudes. You don't see a lot of press about it as I go around the country. It was very devastating. My town is still beat up. People were really crushed. It gave me a sense of what it's like to be in a war zone.

It wasn't just personal or communal tragedies that stood between Jett and new material, either. I convinced myself I had writer's block, she explained. It was 'Reality Mentality' that was the song that took me a long time to write. I used to think that songs just came to me. They didn't - you had to sit down and work at it. Just be patient, write a couple of lines, leave it, come back to it and stuff will pop out. And all of a sudden, stuff started coming, and I realized: You don't have writer's block. Your expectations were wrong.

What it all adds up to, in Jett's opinion, is a record that should resonate with fans. The songs have a serious tone, but they're relatable, she concluded. They're songs about stuff everybody goes through.

Glorious Results Of A Misspent Youth

From her days with the all-girl band the Runaways through her work with her own band, Joan Jett has been a pioneer, if not an innovator. She has always
paid loving tribute to the riffy rock music that she loves. On Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth, Jett, backed by her Blackhearts, churned out more of
the same, but with some of the most satisfying and strongest material of her career. The album is an engaging collection that ranges from a glam-inflected
update of the Runaways' classic Cherry Bomb to the swagger of the Gary Glitter hit I Love You Love Me Love. Other songs include Jett's versions of I
Need Someone and New Orleans and standout originals like the rocking Frustrated, the full-tilt boogie of Long Time, and a ballad, Hold Me, that
would sound mawkish coming from anyone else. Infectious choruses, crunchy melodies, and Jett's growling vocals make this album an excuse to turn the
stereo up just a bit more. - Tom Demalon

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts: Album

Album is arguably Joan Jett's strongest non-compilation release, featuring a consistent, freewheelingly wide range of material (which the Blackhearts
really tear into) and punchier, more detailed production. Once again, Jett delivers strong, enthusiastic performances, but this time, the quality of the
material lends her equal support. The singles Fake Friends and Everyday People (the Sly & the Family Stone song) scraped the bottom of the Top 40

    Bad Reputation

Joan Jett's debut album is an infectious romp through her influences, ranging from classic '50s and '60s rock & roll through glam rock, three-chord
loud'n'fast Ramones punk, and poppier new wave guitar rock. Half the songs on the original album (not counting bonus tracks on the remastered reissue)
are covers, but whether it's Lesley Gore's feminist girl-group anthem You Don't Own Me (featuring the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook) or a
roaring version of Gary Glitter's Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah), Jett makes them all work. The production can be a little weak in spots, but Jett's
exuberance and tough-girl attitude overcome most deficiencies. Plus, the title track is a classic. - Steve Huey

    Introducing Darlene Love

Guitar great/artist/producer/E Street Band icon Stevie Van Zandt arranged and produced the album, enlisting a star-studded cast to contribute songs to Love's return, including Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt, Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, and legendary songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who for more than five decades have reigned as one of the most influential songwriting duos in history.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love's album features all new recordings with her signature dynamic vocal delivery that the New York Times has hailed as "a thunderbolt voice embedded in the history of rock n' roll " and Rolling Stone has called "a rare instrument sturdy enough to vault over Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound.'"

Love's five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music. As depicted in the Academy Award and Grammy winning documentary "20 Feet From Stardom," Love became one of the most sought-after background singers in music history, recording with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, and dozens of other vocal giants throughout her career. Her early work with iconic producer Phil Spector on songs such as the pioneering "He's A Rebel," "He's Sure The Boy I Love," and "Why Do Lover's Break Each Other's Hearts," would garner her legend status.

    ...Ya Know?

BMG Rights Management presents Joey Ramone's second solo album, "...Ya Know?", eleven years after his life was cruelly cut short by lymphoma. The tracks were drawn from a cache of demos and unreleased recordings that Joey had cut at various times during the last decade and a half of his life.

His brother, musician Mickey Leigh, executive produced the project. It was of the utmost importance to me that these remaining songs of Joey's be finished properly, and made available for the world to hear, Leigh says of "...Ya Know?", which is comprised primarily of never-before-heard songs written and sung by his brother.

But this is no half-baked grab-bag of odds and ends. Rather, it's a riveting collection of first-rate songs that embody Joey's trademark intensity and wit, and that can stand proudly alongside his most beloved Ramones compositions. It's also a fitting, if belated, follow-up to Joey's first solo album Don't Worry About Me, which was recorded just prior to his death and released the following year.

"...Ya Know?", whose title refers to the phrase that was a ubiquitous staple of Joey's conversation, adds a significant new chapter to the seminal punk icon's hugely influential body of work. Among the many talented people Mickey Leigh and Joey's manager Dave Frey reached out to in bringing "...Ya Know?" to fruition was veteran producer Ed Stasium, who was behind the board for many of the Ramones' greatest albums, including their early classics Leave Home, Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin.

In addition to producing ten of the album's fifteen tracks, Stasium also contributed instrumentation and vocals to each. The swaggering album-opener Rock 'n' Roll Is the Answer (co-written with Plasmatics guitarist Richie Stotts) will be released as a limited-edition 7" single for Record Store Day on April 21, 2012.

That song and the hometown shout-out New York City demonstrate Joey's knack for channeling his personal passions into bracing anthems. The playfully breezy Make Me Tremble (which Joey wrote and recorded with Dictators founder Andy Shernoff) and the bittersweet acoustic ballad Waiting for That Railroad find him exploring some of the more introspective territory that he'd been unable to visit within the format of his former band.

Elsewhere on "...Ya Know?", I Couldn't Sleep is a collaboration between brothers Joey and Mickey, who also teamed up to record a romantic alternate version of the Ramones' holiday classic Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight) in Joey's apartment. Meanwhile, a previously unreleased reprise of Joey's late-period Ramones tune Life's A Gas ends the album on an appropriately uplifting note.

Also contributing to "...Ya Know?" is an assortment of musicians and producers whose prior relationships with Joey help to give the album an organic vibe that enhances its power and character. The cast of players includes Joan Jett, and Little Steven Van Zandt, who plays guitar on Party Line and wrote the album's poignant liner notes, along with such notables as former Ramones drummer Richie Ramone, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, Richie Stotts, Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye, punk survivor Holly Beth Vincent, members of the Ramones' punk-era contemporaries The Dictators, and producers Jean Beauvoir and Joe Blaney.

The resulting album is a brilliant encapsulation of the qualities that made Joey Ramone one of rock's most unlikely, yet most beloved, heroes. Leigh reflects "Over the past eight years I've been getting barrages of emails and Facebook messages from Joey's fans, wanting to know when this album would be coming out. So having it finally become a reality gives me a feeling of triumph, not for me, but for my brother, and for his fans. And there's not the slightest doubt in my mind that people are gonna be blown away by it.

    14 Songs (Awaiting Repress)

14 Songs is the first official solo album from former Replacements singer/songwriter and front man Paul Westerberg, although a (extremely strong) case could be made that All Shook Down, the last Replacements album, was actually his debut. From the first single World Class Fad to Runaway Wind, Something Is Me and Dice Behind Your Shades the album showcases another great set of songs by Paul. Roping in help from friends such as Joan Jett, Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, and many session musicians, Paul crafted one of his best albums and kick started his solo career with this critically lauded recording. Originally released in 1993 on CD only this is the first time 14 Songs has been issued on vinyl. In a gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl.

    X-Communicate

Sometimes you have to rip it up and start again. It was a tough
call for Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls was her guise for most of a
decade, an outlet through which she's crafted a resonant,
instantly-identifiable body of work. Over the course of three
albums, four EPs, and an array of singles, Dum Dum Girls
morphed from the girl-group-gone-bad moves of their 2010
debut, I Will Be, to the plush noir-pop of 2014's Too True, a dark
heart burning bright. But as her music evolved, she found that for
many she would be forever refracted through the prism of Dum
Dum Girls' early work: retro-leaning female harmonies, a
backdrop of lo-fi, fuzzed up guitars.

In 2015, she decided to shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee for her
real name, Kristin, and adding Kontrol. It was a spontaneous idea
that resonated. The challenge was to start fresh, go further back
into her relationship to music. Sweep all her loves together into
one genreless experience. "The first music I felt was mine was
classic 80s pop and 90s R&B, from Tiffany, Janet Jackson and
Madonna to TLC, SWV, and Aaliyah," she says. "But for years I
was hellbent on the rock'n'roll thing, revering Joan Jett, Patti
Smith, Chrissie Hynde, -- a rebellion against her classical vocal
training -- but I was like, fuck it, I'm just going to try it all. I'm
going to pretend I'm Kate Bush covering Mariah.

Refocused and inspired, Kristin wrote 62 songs, whittled the list
to ten for X-Communicate, and finished the album with the help
of new producers Kurt Feldman (who had produced her Christmas
single a few years back) and Andrew Miller (who played
guitar on the first Dum Dum Girls album and had joined the band
    in its last incarnation).

Arguably the biggest shift, beyond the music itself, is that as
Kristin Kontrol she tells her stories using a sonic palette splashed
with bold pop melodies, her vocals showcasing a range hitherto
unexplored on record. The songs that emerge from Kristin's
universe -- a menagerie of new wave and R&B, European synth
pop, and experimental disco -- are both familiar and unique,
using genre rather than adhering to it, with a distinct nod to the
present. It may be a leap into the unknown, but "little risk means
little reward," as Karen O once counseled her. I feel free. I kind
of excommunicated myself. Even if I have to rebuild my whole
career, I'd rather work hard than feel stagnant. I feel excited
    again, and that's priceless.

One of the leading bands of the 70's LA punk scene, The Germs only released one studio album before the untimely death of lead singer Darby Crash at the age of 22. Equal parts Sex Pistols and Iggy pop, the band's legendary live shows bordered on chaos. GI was produced by Joan Jett and features sixteen tracks of unbridled garage-punk bliss.

Ranked 460/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

This whole album is filled with scathing fury, mostly directed at the impossible situation that confronts women when they are asked to be both wild sources of pleasure and unblemished mother figures. Live Through This uses the same recipe of punk and metal wrapped around pop melodies that made Nirvana so captivating, but Hole uses the methodology in a more conventional manner. The metal ingredient tends to dominate, perhaps because it's the simplest to master, and too often the album resembles early Heart or late Joan Jett--particularly when Courtney Love opens up with her big, wailing voice. Love externalizes her anger, blaming all her problems on the rest of the world. Self-confrontation makes for far more interesting songs. -Geoffrey Himes

With The Wind.' Considered a contemporary classic, this record was included in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of
