    Aqualung (Steven Wilson Mix)

Gatefold LP featuring 24 page adapted booklet from the previous 2011 40th anniversary set.

After veering sharply from the blues inluences of their debut, This Was, Jethro Tull's sound quickly coalesced around jazz-tinged English folk influences and the antics of frontman/flautist Ian Anderson. But it was guitarist Martin Barre's swaggering riff off the title track of the band's fourth album that would become Tull's trademark--and the band's entrÉe into a long reign as arena-rock perennials. But there's a lot more to Aqualung than the riffage of that cut and its cousins, Cross-Eyed Mary and Locomotive Breath. In an era when pseudo-Christian spirituality was a de rigueur, if cheap, musical commodity (from the overblown operatics of Jesus Christ Superstar to one-hit pop wonders such as Spirit in the Sky and Put Your Hand in the Hand), Anderson and company openly challenged the value of organized religion with a thematic album savvy enough to layer its thought-provoking lyrics between heavy strata of FM-friendly guitar bedrock. A clichÉ, perhaps; a landmark, no doubt. And a record many maintain is still Tull's finest hour. --Jerry McCulley

    Minstrel In The Gallery

    40th Anniversary La GrandÉ Edition

Early in 1968, a group of young British musicians, born from the ashes of various failed regional bands gathered together in hunger, destitution and modest optimism in Luton, North of London. With a common love of Blues and an appreciation, between them, of various other music forms, they started to win over a small but enthusiastic audience in the various pubs and clubs of Southern England. The breakthrough came when they were offered the Thursday night residency at London's famous Marquee Club in Wardour Street, Soho.

    Thick As A Brick

Thick as a Brick is the fifth studio album by the English band Jethro Tull, originally released in 1972. Rhino will be reissuing this album on 180gm vinyl.

In 1972, Ian Anderson wrote and recorded the Jethro Tull Progressive Rock classic album 'Thick As A Brick'. The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age. The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world.

    WarChild

Originally released in 1974, Warchild represented a radical departure from the previous year's A Passion Play. Developing out of an ambitious project involving a film, a soundtrack and conventional album, eventually only the latter appeared.

In 1974, Jethro Tull announced plans for Warchild, a multi-faceted project that was to encompass a feature-length film, a soundtrack album, as well a new album from the band. In October of that year, Tull released a 10-song album that would climb to #2 in the U.S. and the top 15 in the U.K., but the film and accompanying soundtrack were shelved.

Warchild features one of the group's most stable lineups and includes Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evans, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond and Barrie Barlow. Unlike its predecessors - Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play - which featured 40-odd minutes of continuous music, WarChild marked a return to songs of a more conventional length, including the FM-radio staple, Bungle In The Jungle. \

    Pressed At Pallas GmbH

When this album was originally released in 1973 (the same year as the famed Live set), Genesis had become one of the fastest-rising groups on the pop scene. The band's blend of classical instincts, theatrical presentation, as well as whimsically complex and daring arrangements established them as leaders of the British progressive rock movement, along with fellow giants Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Jethro Tull. After returning to the studio, these talented musicians continued to labor and experiment. The result of their effort is Selling England by the Pound, considered by some to equal their masterpiece, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It was truly a group effort and is still widely-acknowledged as one of the great albums from the 1970s! And in what was perhaps a foreshadowing of things to come, drummer Phil Collins made his vocal debut here on the song, More Fool Me.

    A New Day Yesterday Live

Something of an odd release, A New Day Yesterday Live documents the final date of a 60-day jaunt during blues guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa's 2001 tour in support of his major-label debut bearing the same title, and (this is the odd part), released just a few months earlier. Just why his record company felt the need for it, then, is up for grabs (more promotion...thinking Bonamassa's virtuosity came across stronger in a live setting...who knows?), but what's clear is that the young guitarist's trio lacked nothing in terms of on-stage presence and performing tightness as compared to what was heard on said studio album. Their kinetic reinventions of oft-overlooked '70s rock classics such as Free's Walk in My Shadows and Jethro Tull's A New Day Yesterday instantly distinguish Bonamassa from teenage blues competitors such as the overly Stevie Ray Vaughan-reliant Kenny Wayne Shepherd or the more purist (and technically less dazzling) Jonny Lang, and his better-conceived originals (Colour & Shape, the wonderful Miss You Hate You) stand up under any circumstance -- but again, so what? Didn't listeners just buy their studio versions a few months ago? Yes, there's the additional benefit of extended jamming and incendiary guitar soloing to expand upon their themes, but suffice to say that this set need only be sought out by Bonamassa fanatics, or, in the event that they've yet to hear the studio version, first timers, too -- why not?

    First Battle (Discontinued)

Regarded as one of the best European progressive rock albums from the 70's, the sole release by Belgian group Waterloo was originally released on the Vogue label and is a highly collectable item commanding obscene sums in the collector's market.

Released in 1970 and entirely sung in English, this brilliant album is a blend of progressive rock and heavy prog, with obvious Jethro Tull influence but with something else really of their own, making of it a very special album.

    In The Can

Chicken Shack's In The Can, a masterful compilation of their finest songs, includes tracks culled from their albums 40 Blue Fingers , 100 Ton Chicken and OK Ken?. These tracks include tunes such as Webbed Feet, San Ho-Zay, See See Baby, A Woman Is The Blues, Sad Clown and of course their best known hit I'd Rather Go Blind.

Formed in 1964, they settled on the name Chicken Shack a year later, inspired by Jimmy Smith's album Back At The Chicken Shack and blues staples such as Chicken Shack Boogie. In the first couple of years the band particularly honed their skills by playing lots of gigs at the legendary Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany. The band featured Christine Perfect, who left once she married Fleetwood Mac's John McVie. By the early '70ies, most other band members had also moved on to other bands - such as Traffic, Savoy Brown and Jethro Tull. To this day, frontman Stan Webb remains the band's only constant member.

    Scratching The Surface (Pure Pleasure)

The Groundhogs' debut album is a long way from the 'classic' sound of the better-known 'Thank Christ for the Bomb/Split/Who Will Save the World?' trilogy. Indeed, the mellow classic blues through which the band pursues its nine tracks offer the unsuspecting listener little more than a direct blast from the peak of the British blues boom past. Early Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, and Savoy Brown all haunted precisely the same corridors as Scratching The Surface, with only the occasional burst of fuzzed Tony McPhee guitar to distinguish the sonics from the rest of the pack. That said, Scratching The Surface ranks among the finest albums to emerge out of that entire period, a moody shuffle that includes an epic recounting of the Chicago classic Still a Fool and which matches five solid McPhee originals with a pair of blistering contributions from outgoing harmonica whiz Steve Rye. In fact, his Early in the Morning and You Don't Love Me might well be the album's best numbers, a discrepancy that puts one in mind of another of the blues boom's hottest acts, Jethro Tull, and just how much they changed once a founding member (Mick Abrahams) departed. Again, if you arrive at Scratching The Surface in search of a fresh Cherry Red or Status People, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you want to hear the blues sluicing straight out of the Southern England Delta, there are precious few better introductions.

    Musicians:

    • Tony McPhee (guitar, vocal)

    • Steve Rye (harmonica, vocal)

    • Pete Cruikshank (bass)

    • Ken Pustelnik (drums)

Recording: October 1968 at the Marquee Studios, London, by Gery Collins
    Production: Mike Batt

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    A New Day Yesterday

Named after the early Jethro Tull classic, which he expertly covers here in a jaw-dropping performance, A New Day Yesterday is a fine debut by guitar ace Joe Bonamassa. And though his record company tried to ride the coattails of teenage guitar prodigies like Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang and position him (misguidedly and much too late) as a straight-up prodigal blues kid, Bonamassa is really much more than a traditional bluesman. Rather, as best exemplified by the Jethro Tull number cited above, his bluesy take on Free's Walk in My Shadows, or his hard boogie romp through Al Kooper's Nuthin' I Wouldn't Do (For a Woman Like You), this excellent debut places the guitarist's influences as much in classic '70s hard rock as in the blues. Along with his deceptively age-wearied vocals (he was only 22 at the time of this recording), this unusual combination translates into the aggressive, soulful crunch heard on Bonamassa's many original compositions. Among these, the jolting double whammy of Miss You, Hate You and Colour and the Shape (note the Anglicized spelling) are the most obvious standouts, but the guitarist also makes the Warren Haynes-penned If Heartaches Were Nickels his own with a tense, riveting performance. All in all, a promising debut.

    Hard Attack

The 70's were the golden era of rock music. Especially in 1972 albums such as Deep Purple's Machine Head, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards, Black Sabbath's Vol. 4, and of course the colossal live Made in Japan were released. In addition to their undeniable historical value, these albums were released by British artists that dominated the rock scene back then. On the other side of the Atlantic, 3 teens from the US were forming a short-lived band that released only two albums but had a strong impact on a small nucleus of fans that recognized something different in the sound of Dust. The sound of Hard Attack, the band's second and final release, that we now call proto-metal is influenced by the likes of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, the Who and even Cream. So, what we have here is an American band that sounds as if it consists of British musicians. The band members however were not strangers to the world of rock. Drummer Marc Bell became known as Marky Ramone, while singer and guitarist Richie Wise went on to produce the first two KISS albums along with Kenny Kerner who wrote the lyrics of Hard Attack. Nevertheless, bass player Kenny Aaronson is the one who shines mostly throughout the album with his amazing musicianship.

As a result, the fact that the album sounds like a fusion of the aforementioned bands is not accidental. In addition, the listener can recognize elements of KISS from the very beginning with excellent riffs, heavy rock attitude but most notably huge chugging bass lines. But it's not just speed and heaviness that this band has to offer. The combination of acoustic and electric guitar showcases the band's ability to create more melodic passages along with their proto-metal sound. The song Suicide is the pinnacle of the whole album as one can listen to the band's Sabbathian sound accompanied by drum fills reminiscent of Ginger Baker. Bear in mind that in this release Marc Bell (aka Marky Ramone) is just 16 years old. Additionally, one can listen to melodic brakes in the middle of some songs that remind Uriah Heep and psychedelic influences from the likes of the Beatles. Moreover, the band sounds even more interesting when they add strings and organ to a mellow song with lyrics such as "Angry angels cried, Satan yearning cast a spell on us, Cherubim with wings that cannot fly, Dancing demons fill the sky". An additional sample of proto-metal can be heard in the speedy instrumental Ivory with its catchy riffs, cool bass licks, and Paice-like drumming. As you may have guessed, Dust is not your typical 70's hard rock band. Yes, they do incorporate elements from several bands but they add their own style in order to produce a rather exciting outcome, that we now call proto-metal.

    Sever The Wicked Hand

    Limited Edition

This US quartet, formed in 1989, emerged in the early 90s as one of the leading lights of the New Orleans extreme metal scene, purveying a sound that blended Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus-styled heaviness with hardcore aggression. Kirk Windstein (b. 14 April 1965, Wiltshire, England; vocals/guitar), Todd Strange (b. 1966, USA; bass) Kevin Noonan (guitar) and Craig Nunenmacher (drums) made their debut in 1991 with the dark and doom-laden Obedience Thru Suffering, after which Noonan was replaced by Matt Thomas, a former bandmate of Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo in Razor White. Anselmo, an old friend who collaborates with Windstein on side-projects such as Down and Both Legs Broken, helped to refine and improve the band`s sound with his sympathetic production on Crowbar, which included a brutally heavy interpretation of Led Zeppelin`s `No Quarter`, adapted stylishly to the Crowbar sound.
The band was well received on tour with Paradise Lost in the UK and Pantera in the USA, and released the Live +1 EP (which was packaged with Crowbar in the UK) before returning to the studio with the stated intention of making Crowbar sound `like Jethro Tull`. In 1995, Eyehategod guitarist Jimmy Bower (b. 1966, USA), who had played with the original line-up in 1989, was recruited as the band`s new drummer, although Time Heals Nothing was recorded with Nunenmacher. True to form and promise, it provided a thunderous blast of controlled aggression and dark melodicism. Guitarist Sammy Pierre Duet (ex-Acid Bath) joined in time to help record 1996`s Broken Glass.

Bower left following the release of the 1998 follow-up Odd Fellows Rest. He was replaced by Sid Montz on 2000`s Equilibrium, following which Strange retired from the music scene and Nunemacher departed the ranks for a second time. Subsequent albums have seen sole remaining founding member Windstein joined by an ever-changing cast list of personnel.

    Homo Erraticus (Out of Stock)

In 2012 Ian Anderson released Thick As A Brick 2, the followup to Jethro Tull's legendary concept album. The album was a critical and commercial success, charting around the world. In April he returns with Homo Erraticus, his new studio album.

The original Thick As A Brick album, released in 1972, was based around the poem of disgraced child prodigy Gerald Bostock. For Homo Erraticus Anderson is reunited with Bostock, using lyrics written by Gerald based on an old historical manuscript. The manuscript examines key events from throughout British history before going on to offer a number of prophecies for the future.

Suitably dramatized and exaggerated by Bostock as metaphors for modern life, he presented Anderson with ideas for 14 songs, which have now been set to music. The result is Homo Erraticus.

The album will be released on Anderson's own Calliandra Records label in conjunction with Kscope on April 15th.

Following the release of this "Jethro Tull album" in all but name, Ian and his band will be embarking on an extensive UK tour, where they will play the album in its entirety followed by a selection of Tull classics. These shows will be followed by further tours in Europe, America and more later in the year.

The double vinyl edition of the album is pressed on heavyweight (180g) vinyl and packaged in a gatefold sleeve with an 8 page booklet.

    Witchcraft (Out Of Stock)

'Witchcraft' is a record which conjures up the macabre essence of vintage Pentagram and, of course, Black Sabbath, whilst incorporating influences as wide apart as the Jethro Tull-esque folky Prog of 'Her Sisters They Were Weak' and the bludgen riffing style of early 70s Bang in 'I Want You To Know'. Elsewhere, 'Schyssta Lögner' evokes memories of Swedens
original hard-rocking Progsters, Novembre, and the inclusion of the cover 'Please Dont Forget Me' from Bobby Leiblings 1970 pre-Pentagram outfit, Stone Bunny, pays further homage to his criminally overlooked genius.

Witchcraft are a band that can swing effortlessly from orthodox Doom to Blues, Folk and Jazz, whilst always remaining shrouded in the cloak of influence from some of the more obscure moments of the 70s cult rock underground. Time has shown that this timeless 2004 release sounds as fresh today as it did back then.
