Heart Ache And Dethroned (Awaiting Repress)

For those who may only be vaguely familiar with the history and subsequent trajectory of Jesu, the re-release of their debut EP, Heart Ache, may function as the most suitable starting place for the process of initial immersion and discovery. Over the span of two towering 20 minute tracks one can hear not only the smoldering remnants of Godflesh embedded in the aural tapestry, but also the foundational elements that would define the future of the Jesu lexicon.

While Heart Ache itself may be reason enough to warrant investigation by the uninitiated, the inclusion of the recently completed Dethroned EP as a part of this release gives further reason. The four tracks from Dethroned were originally conceived and partially finished in 2004, but were only finally completed in 2010

    London Zoo

In Gibson's Neuromancer, when Case and Molly meet the two surviving founders of Zion, there is talk of hearing a mighty dub in the Babel of tongues signaling the final days. If indeed we're living in these end times, as many predict, then there can be no more of an appropriate soundtrack for the coming apocalypse than The Bug's London Zoo.

The Bug is the main project for Kevin Martin, a producer who has headed a diverse range of projects. He is part of Techno Animal, Ice, and God (all with Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Jesu), King Midas Sound, Razor X Productions (with The Rootsman), Pressure, and Ladybug; runs his Pathological Records label; and has collaborated with noise jazz outfit 16-17, Pete Sonic Boom Kemper's E.A.R. project, John Zorn, Kevin Shields, El-P, and the Antipop Consortium. He has recorded for Rephlex, Position Chrome/Mille Plateaux, Word Sound, Hyperdub, City Slang, Tigerbeat 6, Grand Royal, and now Ninja Tune. He has been personally asked to remix Thom Yorke, Grace Jones, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Primal Scream, and compiled jazz and dub compilations for Virgin Records. London Zoo is the fruition of all these activities.

The album was born of three key moments: an introduction to the thriving dubstep scene (of which The Bug is very much a pioneer from before it carried a name) and its key producers (via Kode 9 and Loefah) where Martin realized there were others on the same sonic trajectory as himself; an introduction to Warrior Queen via his work with Wayne Lonesome on the Razor X Productions project; and a Mary Anne Hobbs Breezeblock session which introduced him to Flowdan (Roll Deep) and Ricky Ranking. All three of these figure heavily in the end result and live presentation.

The obvious entry point to the album is the dubstep tag, particularly after the success of the three lead-up singles, but London Zoo clearly reaches past, brings together, and celebrates reference points from dancehall, grime, hip-hop, and noise-- it could have only come out of London sound-system culture, while its appeal spans cities and scenes.

From the opening strains of Angry (featuring reggae legend Tippa Irie) it's clear that the world has been served notice from the heart of the UK capital. The message is further strengthened as Ranking (best known for his work with Roots Manuva), Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Spaceape, Roger Robinson, Killa P, and Aya step up to lay waste to the boombastic rhythms put before them, eventually culminating in Judgement where Ranking leaves us with a prophecy: So much people are losing their minds, because we're living in a serious time. I guess it come in like a judgment sign, the people have killing on their mind. Living in end times, indeed. Best start building the Marcus Garvey tug now.

Every Day I Get Closer (Awaiting Repress)

Over two years in the making, on his followup to the LP 'Ascension', jesu mainman Justin K Broadrick, has worked at this album whilst retaining activities with the reunited Godflesh, and as usual, pursuing
other projects which include remixes for both Mogwai and Cult Of Luna. Beginning with 'Homesick', with it's guitar hooks, shoegaze textures and familiar jesu sound, fans expecting an album following a
familar jesu trajectory will find tracks in line with jesu's aesthetic but taking in dub, post punk and electronica along the way, to create perhaps the most dynamic jesu album to date. Mastered by

Timespan Remixes is exactly what the title implies: The entire debut album by Majeure, remixed by three of his friends and favorite producers. Zombi co-conspirator Steve Moore expands on the opening minutes of Timespan to give it an ominous John Carpenter dread. Jesu mastermind Justin K Broadrick transforms Teleforce into a 10-minute vertigo-inducing shoegaze epic. Renowned French producer Black Strobe closes out the album with a staggering 20-minute reinvention of The Dresden Codex, a white- hot house banger.

Philadelphia's NOTHING have been destroying the eardrums of audiences throughout North America for the past 2 years with a magnetic blend of captivatingly dark and beautiful vocals and explosive, blown out, in the red guitar fuzz. On their debut full length Guilty Of Everything, recorded and produced by Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, War On Drugs, etc) NOTHING seamlessly merge the huge distorted guitar sound of 90s/00s alternative rock giants My Bloody Valentine and Smashing Pumpkins with Jesu's introspective post-metal/hardcore. This is a triumph of a debut that successfully manages to be massively loud, darkly introspective and totally beautiful all at once.

A World Lit Only By Fire (Awaiting Repress)

The first new long player from GODFLESH since 2001's 'Hymns' which saw the band implode and then eventually split up following its release. Since the band reformed in 2010 new material has slowly emerged. 'A World Lit Only By Fire', like the 'Decline & Fall' EP that came out in June, have been works in progress for almost 2 years.

"The music speaks entirely for itself, this is pure Godflesh, as the concept was originallyintended; minimal, brutal, dissonant, driven by machines yet paradoxically dominated by organic and harsh down tuned guitars and bass, clean dub inflected vocals offset against harsh raging minimal shouts, and this is not to forget the worship of the omnipresent groove. Although the band could now be considered mature, and often with this maturity comes peace, this album has been perceived as the most aggressive and consistently fierce release in the band's career, something that the band are very proud of."

Themes of futile battles against the institutions that control our everyday lives, social conditioning, submitting and resigning oneself to the savage within, slavery and the abuse of power permeate and fuel these songs.

    Knights Of Fantasy

On Knights Of Fantasy (1979), Eumir Deodato once again concocted his own ineffable brew of Fusion and funky Disco. Four-to-the-floor beats, funky percussion and heavy synths make for an album that seemingly has an endless groove going.

The B-side opens with 3-part piece called Bachmania, which includes an adaptation of Bach's Jesu, Jay Of Man's Desiring - in a very funky way of course.

Fun fact: the list of used synths include a slew of analog classic machines like a Fender Rhodes Suitcase 88 Piano, Mini-Moog, ARP Pro-Soloist, ARP Omni, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, Maxi-Korg, Hohner Clavinet and a Polymoog. Essential Jazz Funk from the Disco era.

    Further Out

    Colored Vinyl

Produced/Engineered/Mixed/Mastered Completely Analog By Matt Talbot (Hum)

Further Out, the anticipated debut full length from the reclusive Indiana trio
Cloakroom, can be defined best as an exploratory sonic mission. From the album's
opener, "Paperweight," the crushing force of a wall of distorted bass and pounding
drumming collapses to uncover the airy, reverb-soaked vocals of guitarist Doyle Martin,
who's carrying a sullen burden that seems just as weighed down. From the headbanging
heaviness of "Moon Funeral" to the ethereal moments of songs like "Starchild Skull"
and Mesmer," Cloakroom's output is the end result of researching seemingly dissimilar
elements like atmospheric post-rock, punishingly slow stoner metal, and cathartic emo
and how their best qualities can work into a final, organic sound, masterfully navigated
by the expert and completely analog production of Matt Talbot. Further Out boasts the
timelessness of a classic record: it is expansive and exploratory while still reflective and
referential to the astral tendencies of predecessors like Hum and Jesu.

    The Cliff

"The Cliff" is a new vocal driven EP from Chicago's esteemed quartet Pelican. The 12" vinyl is fresh reimaginings of 'The Cliff', a highlight from their most recent album, 2013's Forever Becoming, and one recently completed exclusive new song. The four track EP includes remixes from Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu), Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer of ISIS/Palms, and, for only the second time in their fourteen year career, vocals. Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times) once again returns to the band's fold to transform, in a complementary manner, the concept and overall outcome of what we have come to know as Pelican. No cheap juxtaposition, Epley's seasoned voice is as broad and astonishingly capable on "The Cliff" as the members behind the music, a claim those who have listened to Epley's contribution on "Final Breath" from 2009's "What We All Come To Need" will attest to. Elsewhere on the record, Justin Broadrick and AH/BCM turn in fresh takes of the source material, feeling less like remixes than new compositions reworked from the original source. Rounding out the set is the previously unreleased song "The Wait", a contemplative semi-acoustic simmer that builds to an explosion of cathartic distortion and melody in true Pelican fashion.

    Angels & Devils

It's after the end of the world, don't you know that yet...

With recent reports from various think tanks predicting we have somewhere in the range of 15 years left before the collapse of society begins, it would seem like Kevin Martin's sonic predictions of dystopian London that were set out on 2008's London Zoo were pretty accurate. And if we are in fact declining rapidly to chaos, there's no better time then the present to take the focus of that sonic assault from earthly domains and blast it to the netherworlds above and below.

The aforementioned London Zoo is where Kevin Martin, found his true voice. Pulling the fringes into a collective, unilaterally hateful assault. A psychological warfare driven by bass that on one hand captured a moment of London, yet also encapsulated a global message influenced by years of timeless and classic out-music.

The latest offering from the The Bug, Angels & Devils, escapes the London cage, drawing on it for influence yet blowing it up into a world-view now seen from Kevin Martin's new Berlin home. A record that simultaneously draws on London Zoo, completes a triptych cycle which started with his Bug debut Pressure, and fills the spaces between and inserts what was missing previously. Both a year zero re-set and a continuation of what has been. Like the Bowie/Eno classic Low, or Can's Tago Mago, the album is split into two distinct themes and explorations of light & dark. Bringing the angel & devil voices together under a single common banner. Antagonist at times, but not solely for the sake of being antagonistic, there's a beauty and lush sparseness to be found within, even when at its most chaotic. Truly only The Bug could find the common ground between Liz Harris (of Grouper) & Death Grips and make it seamless. Angels & Devils stretches the polarity of its predecessor in both directions simultaneously and is even more extreme for its new found seductiveness and added intensity. Deep space is explored, and physical assault is administered. In these days of YouTube quick fixes, and single tune memory spans, its a joy to witness Martin actually charting a cohesive narrative that rejoices in celebrating life through sonic sex and violence, beauty and ugliness. This is an audio thriller that delights in pursuing its own singular path/vision.

With the Angel side(s) up first, things kick off with Liz Harris (of Grouper) in the submerged lushness that is Void. Followed by contributions from ex Hype Wiliams half copeland (Fall), the blissed out patois of touring partner Miss Red (Mi Lost), two truly zoned Bug instrumentals, and rounded out by Gonjasufi on Save Me. It's a collection of heady, dubbed out cinematic blissfulness with a lurking darkness before giving way to devils...

Devils leads off with the return of long time collaborator Flowdan on the mic and the guitar of Justin Broadrick (Godflesh / Jesu) bringing a complete about face to the proceedings and setting the tone with The One. Roll Deep's Manga steps up next with the instant Bug classic Function, which is being currently smashed on dubplate, by Mala, Kahn and Logan Sama. Death Grips raise the antagonistic bar with Fuck A Bitch. Flowdan & Justin Broadrick come back for the cinematic death crawl of Fat Mac. Warrior Queen steps in for hands down the nastiest vocal she's ever delivered (which is saying a lot) for Fuck You, and finally Flowdan steps up again to round it all off with a Devils battle cry of sorts dirty, fuck that murky....

The concept is completed by the artistic expression it's packaged in, courtesy of Simon Fowler (Cataract). Known for his work for Sunn O))), Earth, and others, Simon has delivered a stunning hand drawn illustration, that sort that would make Bosch proud, showing the duality of the proceedings.

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Here's a gem from Analogue Productions that captures Leo Kottke's eclectic, innovative style the way it's never been heard on vinyl to date! This 200-gram, 45 RPM beauty plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings sounds fantastic.

Leo Kottke's wide-release debut came about after he sent a cassette to John Fahey's Takoma label. Not suprisingly, it recalls Fahey's work in a number of respects: the synthesis of numerous influences from blues, pop, classical and folk styles, the weirdly titled instrumentals, even the tongue-in-cheek liner notes.

6- & 12-String Guitar is the album that gave notice to the world, or the part of it that pays attention to steel-string guitars, that 24-year-old Leo Kottke was remarkable. Known to aficionados as "the armadillo album," for its cover illustration, the collection captured Kottke's eclectic, innovative style in all its crispness, melodic vitality and rhythmic urgency.

For decades, Leo Kottke would inspire generations of fingerpicking acoustic guitarists (and help pave the way for New Age and contemporary instrumental music), but this 1969 album is the one that started it all. Kottke's brilliant debut was released, fittingly, on John Fahey's Takoma label. Showing the influence of Fahey himself (and Takoma labelmate Robbie Basho), Kottke performs impossibly difficult solo compositions that meld blues, bluegrass, and jazz techniques. Whether surefooted and quick (The Driving of the Year Nail, Jack Fig, The Fisherman) or slow and reflective (Ojo, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring), Kottke's instrumental work is simply awe-inspiring. He'd forge an entire career out of this music and eventually incorporate singing onto his albums, but this gem is Kottke at his very best. Essential.- Amazon.com
