    The Jazz Messengers (Pure Pleasure)

The very first edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was unfortunately short-lived, and as excellent as they were collectively, it was the beginning of a trend for the members of this group to come and go. Unbeknown to Blakey at the time, he would become a champion for bringing talent from the high minor leagues to full-blown jazz-star status, starting with this band featuring Detroit trumpeter Donald Byrd, East coast tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and pianist Horace Silver, a jazz legend ever after. It's evident that although there is much cohesion in the group, Byrd's star was on the rise the fastest, and he would leave in a short period, replaced briefly by Clifford Brown, then Kenny Dorham. What is most remarkable in this first recording for the band is how several of these selections have become classic hard bop vehicles, revered and replayed by thousands of bands over time worldwide. Nica's Dream is the best known of them all, typical of the calypso beats Blakey favored at the time, with a singsong, hummable melody led by Byrd that is pure soul personified, and drenched in unrequited blues.

    Musicians:

    • Donald Byrd (trumpet)

    • Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone)

    • Horace Silver (piano)

    • Doug Watkins (bass)

    • Art Blakey (drums)

Recording: April and May 1956 by Tony Janick at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City

    Production: George Avakiandeutsch

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Moanin'

A Blue Note Essential, Moanin' Is Part Of The Blue Note 75 Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

One of the most beloved recordings of all time, Moanin' is one of the few albums where listeners actually remember where they were the first time they heard it. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers had been formed in 1955 when Blakey joined forces with Horace Silver. After Silver left to form his own successful quintet, Blakey's band struggled a bit. However this is the version of the group that made the Jazz Messengers immortal. In fact, the release of 1958's Moanin' is when the Jazz Messengers became a permanent jazz institution, a laboratory in swinging jazz.

    Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!

Art Blakey discovered and championed young talented musicians such as Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis to name but a few. But he also delivered the message of hard bop through thousands of performances at festivals right down to the smallest club. Lively, joyous performances, the very highest technical standards and somnambulistic music-making characterize this recording. Right from the very start it is clear that these jazz ambassadors have a new message for us. The hard-beat recordings win in lyricism thanks to the gentle sound of Curtis Fuller's trombone, something that was often missing in the powerful Blue Note sound. Four jazz evergreens give the musicians the time and opportunity to display their soloistic talents. The real climax, however, is to be found in the harmonic layering of the three winds which lend the themes new appeal. The message was broadcasted many times until the death of Art Blakey, but the history of jazz would have been a great deal poorer without these milestone recordings on the Impulse label. Art Blakey certainly knew how to delight his audience with fire, originality, a wealth of ideas and great humor. All these attributes are applicable to the six titles on this album.

This album finds Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers paying tribute to Japan (where they had toured to great acclaim) on two selections, featuring Art Blakey's cousin as a vocalist on Wellington's Blues (a real rarity in The Jazz Messengers' discography) and debuting Curtis Fuller's The High Priest. With trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenorman Wayne Shorter and trombonist Fuller in fine form, this is one of literally dozens of recommended Jazz Messengers recordings.

Cut At 33 1/3 RPM By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note Master Tapes

Pressed On 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl LP By RTI

Top Quality Gatefold Packaging With Laminated Covers & High Quality Session Photos

Art Blakey was one of the greatest of all jazz drummers, a masterful talent scout and the inspiring leader of the Jazz Messengers. For 35 years (1955-90), the Jazz Messengers featured brilliant young talent who were pushed by Blakey to write new music and play at their very best. One certainly could not coast with Blakey's explosive drumming constantly egging on the players. The who's who of jazz passed through Blakey's band for several generations, with everyone from Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis to Benny Golson and Horace Silver benefiting from the hard-swinging experience. But few lineups could compete with the 1960 edition of the Jazz Messengers featured on The Big Beat. Blakey, the old man of the band at 30, is joined by bassist Jymie Merritt and three brilliant stylists who were not only exciting soloists but very skilled songwriters: trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The Big Beat introduces Timmons' Dat Dere (which practically defines soul jazz) and Shorter's Lester Left Town (a tribute to Lester Young) and includes an inventive version of It's Only A Paper Moon along with a few other lesser-known but colorful pieces. This is hard bop at its finest from one of the most immortal jazz groups of all time.

    Hard Bop

Cut from the Original Analog Mono Master Tapes by Kevin Gray and Robert Pincus & Pressed at RTI

Numbered Limited Edition of Only 2500 Copies

Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time have passed through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Wayne Shorter and Donald Byrd, among many others. However brief their stay, working with the demanding and full-throttle drummer not only increased their visibility, but also their chops and interpretive capacity. Blakey's ability to drum up the best players in the game may have even eclipsed his superhuman ability to play drums.

Altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Bill Hardman, bassist Spanky deBrest, and pianist Sam Dockery join the fold here to along with Blakey deliver whole-bop goodness on five propulsive, fiery tracks. True to its title, this LP bops hard, with a ferocious swing, boundless energy and telepathic communication between players - especially Blakey and Hardman. Considering the rhythmic demands of Blakey's locomotive playing style, this was an incredible achievement.

Impex Records has cut this gorgeous, limited edition (2,500 pressings) 180-gram LP with the original analog mono master tapes and without computer processing of any kind. You hear all the vivacious interplay that occurred on that weekend in 1957 when Blakey and crew forged a bold new vision of muscular, funky jazz. This is music that still resonates over 50 years later. Not to be missed!

    The Time Is Right

A soul survivor in every sense of the term, this alto saxophonist is one of the few remaining jazz artists who made a major impact on the jazz community via an extensive run with producer Alfred Lion and the Blue Note label (Horace Silver being another Blue Note legend that comes to mind). From his first recordings for the label with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, it was clear that Lou Donaldson put melody and sound at a premium, coming up with an amalgam that combined the creamy smoothness of Johnny Hodges with the quicksilver bop inflections of Charlie Parker. The Quartet

Milt Jackson Quartet features Milt Jackson leading a group that includes two of his cohorts in the Modern Jazz Quartet (Heath and Kay), with the great Horace Silver sitting in place of John Lewis on the piano (at this time Silver was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers). Jackson was clearly skilled in this brass-less setting, and the group decided to lay down some cool jazz tracks that epitomize the sound of that movement in the mid-1950s. The tunes are mellow and fluid, with everyone falling into an easy groove that will move even the most uptight jazz fan.

    Includes 1 Bonus Track

By the time that jazz icon/bandleader/percussionist Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers began recording for Riverside in the fall of 1962, Blakey had already been the spiritual center of the group for nearly 15 years. The unprecedented caliber of performers who had already passed through the revolving-door personnel reads like a who's who of 20th century jazz. On Caravan -- his first of several notable sides for the venerable label -- he is joined by a quintet of concurrent and future all-stars. Likewise, it could be argued that each has never again been presented in such a fresh or inspired setting as on these recordings. In order to establish with any authority just how heavy (even for purveyors of hard bop) the players in this band are, they need only to be named: Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). With Blakey (drums) firmly at the helm, these Jazz Messengers deliver a scintillating synergy that doesn't sacrifice intensity for the sake of cadence. The trademark give-and-take that graces the laid-back and sophisticated pop and jazz standards Skylark and In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning likewise is responsible for the palpable energy brought to the sizeable contributions from Shorter and Hubbard -- which make up half of the album's material. The title and leadoff track liquefies Duke Ellington's original arrangement and ignites it, fueling this extended fiery interpretation. Hubbard's first solo harks back to his own recording of Caravan, which can be heard on the Impulse release Artistry of Freddie Hubbard and was recorded earlier the same year. Coincidentally, that disc also features Curtis Fuller as well as a rare non-Sun Ra-related appearance from John Gilmore (tenor sax). Blow for blow, however, this reading has more than just an edge -- it possesses the entire blade. The melody snakes in and out of Blakey's strident flurry of syncopation. Another highlight is Shorter's interjectory solo, recalling his ability to succeed John Coltrane in Miles Davis' coterie. Among the original compositions, Shorter's upbeat Sweet 'n' Sour stands out as the most cohesive and ensemble-driven, although the singular group dynamic is well applied to the lively This Is for Albert as well. By contrast, Hubbard's Thermo is more angular -- taking full advantage of the musicians' aggressive chops. The 2001 20-bit remaster from Fantasy contains two bonus tracks: take four of Sweet 'n' Sour and take two of Thermo. This release can be considered definitive Blakey, bop, and Jazz Messengers.

Wayne Shorter made a major impact on the Jazz world during 1963-64. He left Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to become a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and he recorded Night Dreamer and Juju as a leader for Blue Note. Speak No Evil is even notable than those two gems, for Shorter had developed into not only one of the most original tenor-saxophonists of the 1960?s but also one of its most vital composers. With superb playing by Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, Shorter introduces six unique compositions including Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, Speak No Evil and Infant Eyes. Hubbard and Hancock consistently raise the temperature with fiery solos. Shorter's playing and writing are both beyond description, utilizing a logic all his own which, over time, has become a major influence in Modern Jazz. Throughout Speak No Evil, Shorter creates brilliant new music like no one else.
