Duke Jordan established his credentials as a pianist during 1947-48 when he was Charlie Parkers pianist. His composing skills did not emerge until the arrival of hard bop in the mid fifties. His 1960 release Flight To Jordan was his first full album as a leader and features the distinctive front line of Stanley Turrentine and Dizzy Reece. Added to the albums six great Jordan compositions are another original and a trio version of I Should Care.

    Sing In Japanese

In keeping with the theme of their last release, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes decided to tackle the proud musical tradition of another country, rather than a specific genre. This time they set their sights on the land of the rising sun, Japan, the birthplace of Karaoke. The fact that the Gimme Gimmes are one of the most renowned cover bands around makes this a match made in heaven.

Spike's sweet crooning is universally pleasing, as he proves by deftly belting out the 6 tracks on Sing In Japanese in the dialect in which they were originally written. The boys ply their fun-loving, punk rock style to these Japanese classics, resulting in 6 up-tempo sing-alongs peppered with guitar riffs hotter than wasabi.

    Breakfast At Tiffany's (Speakers Corner)

Long nights, dizzy parties, a variety of men-friends, and breakfast standing before the window display of the famed jewellery company govern the life of the dazzling Holly Golightly, who has in reality a very ordinary name and poverty-stricken background. All the more rich is the musical carpet that Henry Mancini lays beneath the feet of the exotic, wealthy-husband-seeking socialite. The tender, plaintive worldwide hit Moon River apart, Mancini and his Hollywood musicians mix a sugar-sweet sound with enough acrid elements to glaze over the capricious lady's character. The cool big band sound is spiced with a bold trumpet solo (The Big Blow Out) and mellow violins with a suspiciously tame male choir (Breakfast At Tiffany's). As is well known, there is a great deal of dancing in the film, including a number with a Latin-American rhythm (Latin Golightly), and a grooving mambo (Loose Caboose). At the end of the film even the Moon River swells to become a bubbling cha-cha, as though to say that a 'happy end' must in no way sound sentimental.

A further Mancini mix -The Pink Panther soundtrack (RCA LSP 2795) - is also available from Speakers Corner.

    Musicians:

    • Henry Mancini (arranger, conductor, p) & orchestra

    Recording: 1961

    Production: Dick Pierce

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Breakfast At Tiffany's Soundtrack (Picture Disc)

    Limited Edition Of 500 Copies

Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Henry Mancini's soundtrack for Breakfast at Tiffany's, originally released in 1961. In a career spanning over four decades, composer, conductor and arranger Enrico Henry Mancini (1924-1994) won numerous Academy and Grammy awards for his scores to well-known films and television series, including The Pink Panther, Hatari! (1962), Two For The Road (1967), Wait Until Dark (1967), Peter Gunn (1967), and of course, 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's (which alone won five Grammys and two Oscars). The Breakfast at Tiffany's soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburn's legendary performance of Mancini's Moon River (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. Moon River went on to become one of the best loved songs of all time, but it first made its appearance here, in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Edition of 500.

Supertramp's Blockbuster Features Catchy Hooks, Rhapsodic Melodies, Symphonic Bluster, Meticulous Production: Breakfast in America Includes The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes for Supreme Sonics: Mobile Fidelity's 180g Vinyl LP Presents the Record's Famed Dynamics, Colors, Tones, and Instrumentation in Full-Range Glory

Supertramp's Breakfast in America has it all: Illustrious artwork. Sing-a-long hooks. Contagious melodies. Symphonic bluster. Rhapsodic thrust. Signature Wurlitzer electric piano sounds. Two Grammy Awards, including one for Best Engineered Album. More than 20 million copies sold. Four Billboard hit singles that continue to dominate radio airplay today. Every aspect of the chart-topping art-rock set screams blockbuster, not the least of which is the production, the result of painstaking studio setups and months of mixing. Now, you can experience the sonic brilliance in unprecedented clarity on Mobile Fidelity's definitive analog reissue.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this numbered, limited-edition 180g LP wrings out the record's dynamics, colors, and tones in all their full-range glory. Absent artificial ceilings, Breakfast in America unfolds with an expansiveness and radiance that parallels the vibrancy of its iconic New York-themed cover. Crucial traits such as imaging, separation, balance, transients, and openness achieve near-epic levels of realism and presence. Songs unfold and breathe on mammoth soundstages that put the effort's legendary production - and stellar playing - into proper perspective. The 1979 set has been reissued multiple times in the past, but it's never sounded so engaging, lifelike, or entertaining. If you think you know the record backwards and forwards, wait until you hear this version.

Indeed, aside from the undeniably catchy nature of the ten tracks, fun remains the most central element of Breakfast in America. The band even titled the record to fall in line with the overall joyful feeling of the material. About the latter: Few late 1970s rock albums feature a more cohesive, harmony-drenched parade of stunningly executed, wondrously arranged works. The collective offspring of members Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, each tune reflects the creative pulses of each musician, with the resultant contrasts lending to their appeal. Davies' penchant for grittier, bluesy strands blends with Hodgson's witty, pop-leaning techniques. The combination proves unstoppable.

Home to a quartet of commercial staples - The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Take the Long Way Home, and the title track - Breakfast in America teems with arena-sized drama, meticulous craftsmanship, and mesmerizing refrains. Shrewd lyrical turns abound, whether on the phonetic, adjective-stacked The Logical Song, life-in-America portrait Child of Vision, or move-to-L.A. saga Gone Hollywood. U.S. references also dot the smash title track, which reflects the glib humor, romantic fantasies, and pop culture permeating the record.

Breakfast in America also retains its vitality because of its expert instrumentation and placement. Deemed a a textbook-perfect album of post-Beatles, keyboard-centered English art rock that strikes the shrewdest possible balance between quasi-symphonic classicism and rock & roll by Rolling Stone shortly after its release, the record serves as a blueprint of reference-setting production and mixing. Check the scorching guitar outro on Goodbye Stranger, gospel accents on Lord Is It Mine, saxophone lines on Take the Long Way Home, or chemistry of the choruses on basically every piece here. It's enough to make one long for the 70s again.

Breakfast On The Morning Tram (Pure Pleasure)

Stacey Kent is what men used to call a classy broad. Her elegant fashion sense and understated vocal style make her sound like a woman from another time, an unflappable sophisticate with a warm, slightly world-weary persona. She was born in the United Sates but after a trip to France, she decided to become a jazz singer. In the early '90s she landed in Oxford where she met her husband, musical director/sax player Jim Tomlinson. Tomlinson also produces Kent's albums, and this time out, he composed several charming tunes that sound like potential standards, plus collaborations with lyricist Kazuo Ishiguro, author of Remains Of The Day. Original tunes like The Ice Hotel and I Wish I Could Go Traveling Again are full of wry humor, and Kent delivers them with her usual effortless grace.

    Musicians:

    • Stacey Kent (vocal)

    • Jim Tomlinson (tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute)

    • John Parricelli (guitar)

    • Graham Harvey (piano, electric piano)

    • Dave Chamberlain (bass)

    • Matt Skelton (drums, percussion)

    Overjoyed

Announcing Overjoyed, the first album in 13 years from legendary punk band Half Japanese. One of the most influential bands of all time, Jad Fair and Half Japanese spearheaded the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the In Utero tour, and was wearing their t-shirt when he died). Without exaggeration, Half Japanese is one of the most important bands in the history of music. Overjoyed was recorded and produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, and ranks amongst the best albums of the band's catalog.

This box set includes some of the band's most acclaimed albums, new liner notes from David Fair and several new pieces of art from Jad Fair. All albums restored to their original track listings.

Be careful. You can't unlearn information. I think that the best that you can hope for is a bad memory, but our brains are very remarkable and it is very difficult to actually unlearn something. I came upon this realization too late to help me with visual arts. I had already been taught about proportions and perspective. It's very hard to draw someone in the background larger than their friend in the foreground. Anyone farther away would look smaller. That is how our eyes see them and my brain knows this. I cannot turn off this knowledge and draw it the other way around. I can choose to ignore it, but that is not the same. That is a strategy for dealing with the situation, but not as freeing as simple ignorance would be. It is a nagging strategy that whispers the rules and acknowledges your participation in their breaking.

Luckily, with music, I do not carry the burden of knowledge. I was not educated in its terms and rules. I am not bound by its limits.

I know that I have guitar skills. I have played around with one enough to know what feels right to me. If I were to turn it upside down and attempt to play it in a left-handed manner, my ability would feel awkward and diminished. I am not unskilled; I am merely untrained. For me, this is the ideal situation. Others may prefer acquiring rules and limits. I prefer that my art be directed by my heart rather than my brain.

I have played in bands for nearly 40 years. In all of that time I have only learned three chords. I have resisted acquiring more. If I continue at this rate I am at risk of knowing six chords forty years from now. Instead, I am consciously slowing down. Hopefully in four decades I will remember even less about music convention than I know today.

Forty years is a long time to wait. In the meantime, here's Half Japanese Vol 2. It might get better in the future, but Vol 2 is here already.

Who better than the perennially hip Jackie McLean to title an album Swing Swang Swingin? That's exactly what you get with this bopping set of standards for Blue Note from 1959. McLean's soulful alto wail is primed on this session which also features classic performances from Walter Bishop Jr., Jimmy Garrison and stalwart Art Taylor. From the deep swing of What's New to the bouncing mambo/swing take of Cole Porter's I Love You, this is the very definition of great jazz in the classic tradition. Johnny Griffin is one of the fastest, sharpest tenor saxophonists to emerge in the fertile 1950s. His third and final Blue Note recording is one of a handful that sported a cover illustration by the then struggling artist Andy Warhol. The quartet date with Sonny Clark and Paul Chambers is a relaxed, mature affair that ranges from the gospel-flavored title tune to a beautiful I'm Glad There Is You and an up-tempo It's You or No One. Added to the original album is I Remember You, a bonus track from the session. Better than ever on this Limited Edition 180g Japanese Import LP!

    712

712 is a 1991 album by the Japanese rock trio Shonen Knife. The album was named after the contraction of the Japanese words for the numbers 7 (nana), 1 (ichi) and 2 (futatsu, technically an alternate reading than the preceding, literally meaning two things), which, when contracted, sound like na-i-fu. Naifu is the imported word in Japanese for knife.

    Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence Soundtrack

During World War II, British soldier Jack Celliers (David Bowie) is captured by Japanese forces and held in a prison camp. The officers become intrigued with Celliers' open defiance in the face of their old-world ideas about cowardice and shame. Composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the world's best musicians. He creates music with a unique style that combines classical, symphonic composition, Japanese traditional sounds and experimental electronic music. The soundtrack also contains a vocal performance by David Sylvian, best remembered as leader of the popular U.K. rock band Japan.
